Everybody knows what surfing is about. It is about feeling the rush of adrenaline while riding the waves, not seldom in places where your life is at risk due to many threats e.g. sharks (like being alone inside the wave on a wobbly board is not dangerous enough :D).
For centuries, surfing (on wooden planks) was a main part of ancient Polynesian cultures. Nowadays it has many different subdivisions, so everyone can find something that will suit his/her needs. Like for example…
long boarding (with long surfboard)
short boarding (with short surfboard)
stand up paddle surfing (you can surf with a paddle too)
body boarding (riding on a short, rectangular piece of hydrodynamic foam called bodyboard – good for tricks)
bodysurfing (no unnecessary devices)
The list is quite long but for sure the modern-day definition of surfing refers to a surfer riding a wave standing up on a surfboard. We can observe it in many tourist destinations and you can usually take surfing classes there too. Surfing is not only the domain of super fit youth in Hawaii, it is enjoyed a year round by both men and women of all ages in many different parts of the world. I had a chance to observe groups of 12-year-old boys and girls going together to have fun on the waves in the Canary Islands, without any adults around to keep an eye on them. In these places it is really as popular as e.g. skateboarding in Europe.
If riding waves is for you too casual, you can try and learn some tricks and there is a very large number of them to choose from. Is it safe? Not very much. Here’s some statistics: Common surfing injuries requiring treatment are lacerations, sprains, dislocations and fractures. The legs (37%) and head (35%) are most common areas of injury. The torso (16%) and arms (12%) account for the rest of injuries. The coral seabed doubles the risk of injury compared to the sandy seabed. Experienced surfers tend to have more severe injuries than novices because they surf larger waves in more challenging conditions.
Of course, you can surf on natural or artificial waves, e.g. those from boat wakes and the waves created in artificial wave pools.
Some people practice surfing as a recreational activity while others make it the central focus of their lives. Many surfers claim to have a spiritual connection with the ocean. Surfers from around the world use often the “shaka sign” to convey the Hawaiian "Aloha Spirit", a concept of friendship, understanding, compassion, and solidarity among the various ethnic cultures that reside within Hawaii. On the island even drivers will often use it on the road to communicate… distant greetings and gratitude (positive attitude, how awesome is that).
The Shaka sign looks like this:
Fun facts. When the waves were flat, surfers persevered with sidewalk surfing, which is now called skateboarding. Sidewalk surfing has a similar feel to surfing and requires only a paved road or sidewalk. To create the feel of the wave, surfers even sneak into empty backyard swimming pools to ride in, known as pool skating. Eventually, surfing made its way to the slopes with the invention of the snurfer, later credited as the first snowboard. Many other board sports have been invented over the years, but all can trace their heritage back to surfing.

Surfing is not just a sport, it is a lifestyle. Poeple from very different backgrounds find it very attractive and meet to experience the water and the waves.
I would like to try it in the future and I definitely will one day. I still did not think of any best place to try it, though.
My cousing was recently in surfing in US California. He is 11. I seen some photos of him and it was awesome!
Surfing looks like a lot of fun. I've never tried this sport because I'm a person which is a little bit afraid of this kind water sports. Maybe one day, if I got the chance to try this sport I would definitely do it.
In some place of Poland in summer time you can try something similar to long boarding.
I don't know anyone who practices this sport. Probably because it is not very popular in our country.
By the way, my colleagues recorded this movie

However, I recommend the sport, it's much fun. Just remember to be careful, pick the right teacher and listen to what he or she says - especially about the safety rules.
Check this guy's photos out - visiting his account always makes me ask myself why I haven't tried surfing yet: https://instagram.com/slatertrout
I have never tried "classic" surfing, but I've tried kitesurfing :) I really liked it, but every time I went for a trip somewhere - to polish sea, or Egypt I always had bad luck :( I mean there was absolutely no wind, so after 3 trials I kind of gave up with improving my kite skills, but maybe one day I will come back and give wind another try? ;)
I think surfing is very interesting sport, I like everything that is more or less associated with water, especially ocean or sea. I know it's very popular in Australia, I remember when I was a child I really liked to watch serials or cartoons about surfing, it was something special for me.
Unfortunately, I've never tried surfing yet, but I really hope I will, I'd like to try it.

If anyone's interested here's a link to 2014 Pipe Masters - Finals. It's pretty fun to watch.

(By the way, it's the first time I've ever heard about bodysurfing - I must check it out, it looks really crazy!)
Although I've never tried surfing itself, it seems really exciting! I'm totally keen on sports generally, especially the water ones, so that belongs to my 'must do' list. I've already been windsufring, but it had place in Poland and as we know the weather here likes to ruin our plans - I was totally disappointed, but for sure I'd like to try it again , maybe just in more favorable conditions. Besides that, we've got a quite good place to wakeboard in Augustów, I always spend a lot of time there on holidays. Honestly, now when I think about it more closely, I think that I should take into consideration the best places for surfing, while I'll be planning my next summer break. It would be awesome to finally try a real surfing! I'm just a little bit afraid that I'll probably come back fully broken... :)
Actually I am creating website about kitesurfing as my graduating project so I am into this subject. I talk with many people who love this sport and I am convinced that this is the life style for them. They are so hooked.
For those who like kitesurfing: DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVOURITE SPOTS? Let me know it will be helpful to my project;)

What do you think about surfing?
Interesting sport which I haven't had chance to try. I like every sport which involves speed(and you don't have to run).
Have you ever tried it? Do you want to try it in the future?
No, but when I'll be visiting Oahu I sure will try.
Do you know anyone who practises this sport?
No, I don't.
I like to start again surfing but maybe this year I find the time for surfing.
I know that my fried practices surfing and she's some kind of champion.
My friend goes to USA every year to ride the waves there. When I see his photos on the long board I’m so impressed!
As for inventions, I know that very famous camera “GoPro” was invented by surfer to shoot video during riding. So popular nowadays ugg boots – surfer’s invention as well. He use it to save his feet temperature after riding.
