Week 9 (1-7.12.2014) Internet television

Internet television is a hot topic nowadays. It appears everywhere: in the traditional TV (“Hey, just after my program go to www.something and watch the rest of the episode”), in ads in magazines:“New episode of …. TV premiere: This Sunday. Watch today on www.somethingelse”.

http://findingmyinnerbombshell.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/img_0933.jpg

I believe everyone with the Internet access did already watch some kind of TV show on the
Internet. In my opinion we will be soon trying to get rid of TV and everything you want to
watch will be available on the Internet, from legal sources, of course.

Currently, in Poland, we have got access to several VOD (Video On Demand) and Internet
Television services: HBO GO, Horizon TV from UPC, IPLA from Polsat, Player.pl from TVN,
AXN Player, Cineman VOD from Onet and another VOD from TVP.
Prices for the services vary from free (Player.pl, TVP VOD, IPLA), others are delivered with the
cable service (Horizon TV) and the rest is available as 'standalone' service (only recently HBO
GO and Cineman).

I use Horizon and HBO GO on a regular basis and I’m really happy with it. It allows me to
watch TV on my tablet, the internet connected TV or even PC.

If it was possible to get rid of TV having these services,  I would be  ready to change. For example, HBO made it easy allowing to order its service in the standalone version without the cable agreement.

Also I’m looking forward to services like Netflix and Hulu to appear in Poland and I do already use them using VPN network.  It’s some kind of “almost legal” workaround but it works. I’m able to watch premiere shows and pay their makers for it.
How are Netflix and Hulu different? These are Internet-only
platforms. There are no TV channels of Netflix or Hulu. All their series are published on the Internet and can be watched only there. And what’s good about Netflix: usually the whole series is published at once so you can watch it during one day or adjust frequency of watching next episodes to your free time.

Recently, Polish UPC subsidiary, have started tests of MyPrime (source:
http://www.telecompaper.com/news/upcpolandintroducesmyprimefilmsandseries1051395): Netflix style video service with over 1000 movies, programs and series.
Sources state that it will cost only 20 PLN per month, which makes it  another service I’m willing to order.

Do you use any Internet TV(live)?
What about VOD (Video On Demand)?
Do you have a TV-set ? How much time per day/week do you watch it?
Are you willing to get rid of it if you are will be able to watch anything on the Internet?
Do you watch premiere episodes of series on the Internet or do you wait for their TV premiere?

I am not a huge fan of watching TV, in my opinion TV programmes are getting more and more stupid, I have not enough time to waste it in front of TV (it's way better to waste it in front of computer -.- hehe) and even when I want to chill out, there's never anything interesting for me on TV.

That's why I think watching interesting episodes online is a very good marketing step forward. Ads are still there (really annoying, because we are not used to watch 1:30 minutes of advertisements in the Internet), so they still have their income what means it still can be free for us to use. There is also very nice feature that allows you watching episodes online directly on your tablet (handy) or even your TV :)
And I think that the size is a magnificent advantage of TV. For example I almost never watch TV, but when I do (once per half a year :D ) It's because something interested has already been broadcasted few days ago and I'd like to watch it, and here comes the choice - I prefer to watch it on a bigger screen than on my computer's one.

I only wonder what is a future of Television. Maybe similar to music? I am not really into listening radio anymore, I like the music I choose. I really like the option, which is provided by spotify: you have ads - you can use it for free, but with possibility of choise what you want to listen to; you pay monthly - like for Netflix, as you mentioned, and you can watch everything you want to legally even without any ads.

I do not watch television at all and I don't own a tv receiver. Even when I had one at home I didn't use it. But it doesn't mean that I don't watch tv shows and programs. I just feel that anything I would like to watch I'm able to download from the web at any time I like, and even If I'm in the mood to watch something stupid to relax myself I would rather choose something specific then mindlessly serf through television channels. Sometimes I watch stupid Polish/or foreign programs on tvnplayer or vod but on my computer I can watch them with no commercial breaks and I can stop at any time I want. Anyway I totally agree with Natalia that level of tv programs is getting lower and lower. I hate that people spend huge amounts of money to make programs like Dancing with the Stars and Honey Boo Boo than on some truly entertaining and interesting stuff. I never had many channels because my family doesn't watch that much tv either but I always loved watching Discovery and Animal Platen at my grandmas place and now from what I've heard on History channel through the whole day you can mostly see Pawn Stars. I don't know how anybody could find that THIS interesting. What really makes me sad is that I guess people nowadays just want to watch those kind of shows. Maybe the Internet should be the place where we watch stupid youtube videos and silly programs and television should provide some better content. Anyway I don't think that I'll ever buy a tv, the Internet has everything I need ;)

I think that in the future there will be only news station channels left that broadcast 24/7 some "breaking news" stories and comment on present issues. And after that Internet and television will just blend in together. I don't really see much happening for television.
Unknown said…
Nah I don't watch internet tv.
I don't use VOD.
I spend about 15 - 30 minutes weekly on watching some news.
Yes, my TV may be gone in the future.
Michal Kulesza said…
I see your point. I did buy TV just to have better screen for my XBOX.

Recently I've read interesting article why the level of TV programs is getting lower and lower. People claim that they need to watch some high quality programs and when they are at home they prefer to see "Farmer is looking for a wife ("Rolnik Szuka Żony"). It's the exact thing you mentioned. People don't need interesting stuff after their workday - the prefer to entertainment.

Discovery and Animal Planet still maintain high quality programms. Unfortunately, recently National Geographic Channel became another station transmitting low quality programs with product ads in them.

Michal Kulesza said…
I have been considering presentation about music streaming but MyPrime announcement convinced me to prepare it about Internet TV.
I love concept of Spotify and Spotify Family account: I pay like 40 zlotys per month for 4 people listening to music from legal source. It's just 10 zlotys per person per month - and it's easier than to look for another MP3 source when previous is being shutdown.

Ads are problem, as you've mentioned are not used to them on the Internet and I would prefer to pay some small amount of money to get rid off them.

When it comes to the size of screen: you've got plenty of applications for ie. Samsung Smart TV - which are still using Internet to download video content for you.
Michal Kulesza said…
Peter, why you don't watch internet TV? You just don't like this kind of entertainment called 'watching' or you got some other reasons?
Unknown said…
Yes yes, that's what I was talking about - I am using Samsung Smart TV, really cool :) But you know, it ruins a concept "living without TV" because you actually doing quite the same thing, but online :D (still watching tv :D not being sticked only to computer)

@Paulina do you think a tv can remains only with news channel? That's interesting... It would be so much easier to check things on internet, or maybe some new medium would be invented? no idea! :D
Michal Kulesza said…
And how would you call watching this using projector :)?
I believe it's still watching TV.

News channels in future? No way...
In my opinion these electronic chips they want to put under our skin will be able to handle news and present to us for example transfering sound over bones or there will be similar technology invented to present image transfering it over neurons?

Even now I'm not using TV for news channels, it's easier to find news on the Internet.
Unknown said…
I regularly watch Internet TV, because it is the only one I have. I usually watch series and entertainment shows from Player.pl. In my opinion the quality is quite nice, but I do not like that I have to watch my show an hour later than it is in the cable TV.
When I lived with my parents I had VOD, which I used often. I think it is great, the quality is HD and it is easy to use. It has also a big variety of movies, series and programs.
My parents watch almost everything on VOD.
Actually, I spend a lot of time watching movies and series, because it is my favorite way to relax and chill. So I would love to have Netflix.

Considering the differences between TV and Internet television (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television vs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_television)
I have to say that I rarely watch either. I truly prefer watching movies in cinema (recently i saw Interstellar in IMAX and I highly recommend it!). On the other hand i do own a 3d-supportive monitor (http://www.lg.com/pl/monitory/lg-DM2752D-PZ-led) that is only used for a PlayStation or watching movies.
I do have cable TV (came with the Internet connection) but as I'm considering changing the provider, well, the TV was never a desirable. The only two appliances it ever had was watching snooker games stream or Phineas and Ferb (really funny!!).
MartaSB said…
I'm watching neither traditional TV nor Internet TV. I don't have time to waste on some spontaneously noticed show and when it comes to movies I prefer to watch them in the cinema.
MartaSB said…
Phineas and Ferb are awesome. Best cartoon ever!
Unknown said…
I rarely watch traditional tv, actually I could say that I don't watch television at all. Sometimes I check the News and maybe a movie from time to time, but that's it. The quality of most tv programs is terrible, some are outright dumb and I feel stupid just looking at them. :D As for the Internet TV, I used Horizon TV a couple of times, but it turned out to be inconvienient for me.

I quite agree with Paulina that the Internet has everything that's necessary for me. And if I want to watch a movie I usually go to the cinema. :)
Unknown said…
Internet television is good idea for me. I can watch my favourite series when I have time and feel like watching some telecasts. Sometimes I don't have enough time to watch when tv shows my series. If I don't have internet television I will miss a lot of episodes. And of course I can follow the fate of characters of the series when I don't have access to for example polish tv. I think it is the biggest advantage of web tv. I usually watch Ipla, TVN player. I can watch a few times the same section because I have unlimited access to my programs.
I don't completely agree with what you have written Michal. I am talking about the part of not needing watching interesting stuff after workday. I think that majority of people that wanted high quality programs simply stopped watching TV long time ago. The people that still watch TV probably do not watch any internet TV or they just do it occasionally.
I think that the best solution for your problem with waiting 1h to watch your show on player.pl is just not watching it immediately :P.
I mean why don't you wait a month or something and the watch few episodes in a row ?
Unknown said…
I would totally pay monthly subscription for channels that i choose if it will include no ads. And those channels would be like 3 cooking programs, discovery/animal planet and cartoon channels. That's it.
Just like you i stopped watching tv for 6-7 years because internet replaced everything i need. I only wish netflix was in poland so i could go with legaly buying cheap movies.
Anonymous said…
As a professional prophet I can tell already that they will not make much money in Poland ; ).

I watch Kuba Wojewódzki show on kuba.tvn.pl sometimes. In the past I used itv(I believe it was named this way) to watch first five seasons of "How I Met Your Mother"(it became way to boring to watch it anymore) and "Penguins of Madagascar"(PL) and I am very thankful to Netflix for producing "House of Cards"(!!!!!).

On the other hand, there is no way that using any sort of internet tv will be more convienient than using torrent. Even if you didn't care about money, they have to stream it for you every time(you need to have fast connetion), also you need to undergo annoying process of payment(login, password, text message etc.), authorization to log into your account(login, password).

To be honest I don't like to watch telly. There is nothing there to watch. Whenever I seat on my sofa in order to watch something, there is literally nothing there, despite how many channels I've got. So I have Tv set, but I use Dvd more frequently. I pick a movie, put it on and just push the button play. I also watch a lot of tv series online and shot movies on YouTube. It's comfortable, because I can watch whatever I want whenever I want. I always choose Internet over normal telly:P Do you?
I also like to watch tv series online. What are your favourtie sites to do so and which tv series you recently have watched?;)
Don't you like to watch something during cleaning apartment or ironing? I do this all the time:P

I’m as Natalia not huge fan of watching TV. I think that minority of TV programmes is interesting and useful. More of TV programmes are stupid and useless.
If I want to watch something I watch it in the Internet.
But If you ask about it, I don’t watch Live Internet TV. I don’t have enough time for it. I watch when I have a free time, so vod is perfect for me.
I don’t have my own Tv-set. Uhmm, how much time I spend on watching TV? I don’t know, but it’s not very much. I watch sth when I eat. I don’t like eat alone, so TV on the Internet is my comapnion :P
Of course I watch premiere episodes of series on the Internet. I’m too impatient to wait for TV premiere episodes of my favourite series.
Unknown said…
I completely agree with you. If I watch on the Internet I can watch whatever I want whenever I want. BTW I don't have TV-set and I really glad about it :D

TV and films on Internet are very popular but I start hearing more about those illegal sources. I try not to watch TV at all because it is a waste of time. However, I have a few favorite series. If I have to chose between watching series on TV or on Internet, I will prefer TV. Since my monitor has only 15 inches, it is impossible to enjoy a super quality and details.
Personally, I'm watching television only on the TV. I tried to watch TV on my computer or my phone but it's not for me. I like big screen.
In the case of VOD - I use sometimes player.pl and ipla. I have TV-set and television from vectra. I rarely use cable TV. Most often I watch films or series from my PC (DLNA streaming to TV). I'm not interesting in any series to look forward to the premiere episode. Frequently I watch the whole season at once :)
Unknown said…
I'll start with saying i don't watch TV for more than a 7 years. Since the quick progress of the internet i found that i don't need it and mostly because all of the TV channels i would watch were expensive for me.
Well, i would lie if id say i never even glanced on tv screen, i did sometimes watch cooking channels and discovery (when i had it). But now it's not available and most of this channels are not showing same content i liked so much.
And here comes again, the internet. Most tv programs already begun to upload reruns on websites making it even better for me since there was no ads and i could choose myself which episodes to watch.
Also just like many people, i watch plenty of tv series and waiting for them on tv is just a bad idea, that's why just like you I'm eager to wait until Netflix services comes to Poland so i can legally watch tv series and some movies that i missed in cinema, instead of buying dvds (which are also a pain for me since i only buy dvds and cds of medias i like REALY much).
That's why I'm all up for the internet streaming, i am also willing to pay monthly subscription if i will be in charge of what programs i can watch and if provider will get rid of adds (since we actually pay for those services). I just hope that IPs won't get in conflict as well as some tv stations. However i know some tv stations which are also going into web.
Unknown said…
People would watch anything stupid no matter is it tv or internet, but internet is still has this advantage where i can always turn it off and change it to something more "high quality". Cause, last time i checked tv, even on channels like discovery, there were really boring and nothing to do with actual science programs, instead it was all flashy.

Do not forget a point in which YT became a close imitation of television, as far as i know there was more than 10 series made specifically for YT and they were not some low budget student movies, instead they had same budget as one from major tv station.

2 years ago i had disney channel on my tv and Phineas and Ferb was only thing i bothered to watch at that time.
Unknown said…
I just can't help myself without watching any tv series or cartoons when i work. And i wish i had money and time to go every week to the cinema, but internet helps me here a lot.
Internet television and streaming services are great. I am a fan of watching TV via Internet for many reasons. You have a wide selection of channels and can access them at any moment via nearly any device. You can connect these devices to big screens and even use your phone as a remote. It's a pity that services offering „renting” videos digitally aren't available in Poland. One of the many benefits would be that people would stop downloading videos illegally.

Do you use any Internet TV(live)?
Not really, maybe from time to time when I really need it.
What about VOD (Video On Demand)?
I think that is a nice service. But I don't watch that many movies/tv shows to need it.
Do you have a TV-set ? How much time per day/week do you watch it?
Yes. Not much. I leave it turned on all the time mostly, just to have some noise in the background.
Are you willing to get rid of it if you are will be able to watch anything on the Internet?
Nope.
Do you watch premiere episodes of series on the Internet or do you wait for their TV premiere?
I use Internet.

In my own place i am not planning to own a TV set. I do not watch TV at all. There is a TV at my house and event the sound of it makes me furious. The ads are frustrating, the difference of volume between ad panel and regular programme is ridicullous and its commercialisation is a determinant of our culture and I find it sad. Sometimes when I want to watch a show I record it and watch it later (it gives me a possibility of fast forwarding ad panels). I think it is very sad how TV influences our society - I know a lot of families that never turn off their TV, EVEN during important family reunions, such as Christmas Eve dinner, they only decrease the volume and let their eyes rest on the screen from time to time, when a conversation is not very fluent. And it is not fluent BECAUSE of the TV set.
I helped my mom once to play an episode of one of polish series on tvn's vod platform - it was frustrating, because it was constantly buffering and getting stuck.
The thing with foreign series on Polish TV is that the time period between their world and Polish premieres is so long that nobody wants to wait and they simply download it from the Internet. I am not a very patient person, so I watch films/series online. Anyway, I don't think I need such thing as VOD.

When I hadn't TV in previous flat I used to watch television channels on my tablet. I was watching football matches or other sport events. It was popular streaming (low quality and sometimes in foreign language, not only english so often I ditn't understand speaker). Very nice article.

I should try this service from UPC about what you say in your presentation. Sound really good. I have never bought something on VOD. I don't watch television a lot, mostly special events. But sometimes my TV is on and playing in the background, when I am doing something else. And of course I watch premiere episodes of series on the Internet, I'm afraind of spoilers, so I want to see new episodes as soon as possible;)
Michal Kulesza said…
Sorry guys, I don't get this Phineas and Ferb fenomena :P I've tried and tried to watch it but... It looses with Penguins of Madagascar!
Michal Kulesza said…
As Izabela mentioned - It's realy to have some background noise doing boring job. Marta probably forced Lukasz to do all ironing and cleaning, am I right :>?
Michal Kulesza said…
Well, the problem is you usually discuss your opinion on that episode of series. You know, you are loosing the social factor :)

VOD with HD content is great, it allows people not knowing computers that much access content normally unavailable to them.
Michal Kulesza said…
It would be even better if we would be able to order MyPrime (service from UPC) without their cable services - as standalone version like HBO proposed in some countries.

Seems like everyone is watching premiere TV series on the Internet to avoid spoilers :)
Michal Kulesza said…
There are series published almost instantly after foreign series. Game of Thrones on HBO was published something like 1 week after global premiere.
Michal Kulesza said…
Your comment did remind me one silly situation when I was trying to explain my aunt that even if she paid for watching some new movie it doesn't mean it's legal source. She replied: "Well, I did pay for that. I don't care anymore."
Sometimes people are not afraid that they aren't using legal source.
Michal Kulesza said…
The price of DVDs without any promotion or discount is too high. There are too many organisations which participate in earnings.

And about paying for services: what do you think about product placement in the movies you paid for watching? It's less annoying kind of ad (ok, sometimes) but still.
Michal Kulesza said…
Watching on the Internet doesn't mean using only your computer screen. Using special applications you can even mirror your phone's screen and watch series from it on the screen of TV.
Unknown said…
You know, i always find when movies use real products it actually added some sort of realism, like when i watch some movie and characters talk about some product while consuming it. I know that it can be annoying if used too much (like in russian movie Night Watch, it was 2 hour ad). If it is done to some degree I'm alright with it.
Marcin Lyzwa said…
I don't watch TV almost at all. In my flat TV is only connected to my own media server where I keep all films. VoD services are a great sign of a progress. I have heard about UPC service before, if I'm not mistaken Vectra also provides services video on demand. I used to use Netflix when I was watching House of Cards, and I must admit I really liked the way of watching TV series, and it's a pity that Netflix is unavailable in Poland yet. I usually watch the premiere episodes on the Internet I can't wait until it'll apear or not at TV. In my opinion Vod can affect on number of torrents downloaded in the Internet. If people catch the idea of VoD I think they'll stop downloading illegal film. Very good example is Spotify.

I do not watch any Internet TV, I do not have TV set as well and I don’t watch series (with some exceptions from time to time). I do not watch it mostly because it takes a lot of time. I prefer not to involved in it and use this time differently. However I watch movies, but usually I go to the cinema – sometimes even alone, I do not feel that is social activity as many people think.
Julia Osiak said…
I just realized that I can't remember when was the last time that I turned on my TV. I usually use VOD or other internet services to watch my favorite shows. It's simply more convenient, because I can turn it on whenever I have free time, and there is no need to wait up to watch the new episode. Using the internet is way easier, you can find more interesting and relevant shows or movies and they are available at any time, so I'm pretty sure that if I didn't have my TV set I wouldn't miss it much.
Unknown said…

I think it would be great to have service like Netflix in Poland. I watch TV only when I'm preparing and eating meals and especially during dinner there's almost completely nothing to watch. I limit my choice to two channels but must pay for all those channels I never watch or to just have ability to watch some sport events from time to time.
But I'm sure it will change some time, because people are getting used to have everything on demand on the internet.
Unknown said…
Well, it's a pretty interesting example of how modern technologies are changing over life, however, I am not a big fan of TV, series and stuff like that, so I don't know any Internet TV, I currently I don't have TV, but I will not rid of it in the case when I will have it, not because I'm about to watch it, but more about making atmosphere at home.
Unknown said…
I agree, that internet TV can make it more comfortable in the terms of economy, as there is no need to pay for a whole lot of channels while really you need some news, sports-channel and something about music, so there is no need in over 9000 of different channels about different unnecessary stuff.
Unknown said…
I don't remember how website is called but I have already finished watching Braking Bad. Sometimes I watch rodzinka.pl at ipla when I want to relax:p
Unknown said…
Yeah, Netflix would be just great for us but i am afraid that tv studios would be a bit pissed, since Poland does have high percentage of people sitting near tv screen for long time. And with netflix many people, especially young one, will be using it since it's much cheaper.
Unknown said…
I am not great fun of TV in general but I use it sometimes. I never used VOD but I must say that it is great solution for people who would like to watch some movie and they can’t get it from other source ;)
I prefer to watch series on the Internet simply because I can get all episodes at once.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
