Week 6 (10-16 November): The art of disappearing

In my presentation I would like to tell you about an amazing woman whose exhibition we can currently see in Warsaw.
65 years ago her father took part in an unsuccessful assassination on Hitler, which was the reason why she was called “the daughter of a murderer”. Despite her severe childhood, she managed to create her own image as a mysterious girl from the East. She was friends and worked with such great artists as Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, Michelangelo Antonioni or Richard Avedon, who spoke about her with awe. “She is the most beautiful woman in this world. There is no one like her.  She was able to find herself.” Vera Lehndorff, known as Veruschka, “the face of the sixties”, the first German supermodel, who became a precursor of body-painting.

Veruschka by Franco Rubartelli, Las Vegas, 1967

Veruschka by Richard Avedon, New York, 1967

Her first contact with art was in 1963, when she worked with Salvador Dali on a performance in which she was a living sculpture covered with shaving foam. However, the greatest fame brought her the role in the Michelangelo Antonioni’s movie “Blow up” from 1966, which is called one of the sexiest scenes in the history of cinematography.

At the turn of the 60ties and 70ties she met Holger Trülzsch, the photographer with whom she started the series of artworks that connected photography and painting. She swapped fashionable clothes for paint and became one of the first contemporary body-painting artists.
In her staged sessions Vera perversely chooses backgrounds that arouse discomfort in viewers. In her opinion it shows the internal state of a posing model that is mercilessly treated as a life hanger for clothes. Her camouflage is so perfect that it is sometimes hard to see the outline of a silhouette or to extract the face. Veruschka challenges the viewers. They need to think, make effort to see and understand her art. It takes a while to spot her on the stage. Vera’s photographs are not only linked to models as plastic items, but also a comment for women invisibility in a public space, for example in Africa where she makes special sessions.

“Behind the Appearances” is the first exhibition of the couple Vera & Holger. You can see it in the Spectra Art Space (Bobrowiecka 6 street) till 30th November.

What do you think about Veruschka’s photographs?

Thanks for sharing this story with us. I didn't know anything about Veruschka. She was (and is - I checked) a very beautiful woman. Somebody even said that she's the most beautiful woman in the world! It is rare that a supermodel is renown for something else than just being pretty/hot, it's good that she has more to offer.
Regarding the subject of invisibility - I would like to share with you work of Liu Bolin, a Chinese artist who focuses on integrating fully with the backgrounds of his photos: http://www.galerieparisbeijing.com/artists/liubolin/works/hiding_in_the_city/ These photos are just amazing!

I have never heard about Veruschka before this post. It is strange, because I know almost all the mentioned artists she was working with. After reading this article, I must say, she seems to be very interesting person. I would really love to read her biography.
Her photography seems to be very interesting - beautiful colors combined with original themes and stories. I think watching her works in real life - during an exhibition will be a great experience.

I'm not fan of an art so I shouldn't anyhow grade her photos :)
However I'll do my best.
Firstly, I couldn't get what do you mean by art of disappearing and I was going to write some stupid comment about using photoshop and playing with opacity. After I accidentialy opened bigger photo I realized that It's not photoshopped!

Well I really like it and if I wouldn't be that lazy I would visit this exhibition.

By the way: I still prefer photographs of Veruschka over Veruschka’s photographs :)

I have never heard of her and I find this topic interesting :)

I am not sure if I have ever seen a bodypainting as an art. I really like the idea with camouflage, I had a problem to find her in the first picture :) Well done :D
I'm ondly wondering why did she want to hide, when she was so pretty? :) I think it was a pleasure to her to model, pose, to be in front of camera. I know that at this bodypainting photos she still is on the picture but she is no longer visible - but even though people still are looking for her at those photographs, so maybe that was a point :D
WOW, I need some time before I found a person on the first photography. Bodypainting is art, photography is art, together give an amazing effect. I'm interesting in a bit of photography. Fantastic effects also give display an image from the projectior on body. I find a video of this method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxVdNxCh8EY.

Veruschka is a really interesting person. She wasnt only beautiful woman but also very talented and
ambitious person. I was on the exhibition in warsaw and it made big impression on me.
There were presented huge prints in great quality. I think that only by watching the exhibition you can appreciate the class of presented photographs from Holger Trulzsch.
Great that at the exhibition opening showed up Veruschka herself captured on the photos.
All exhibition was presented very good in the office on bobrowiecka street. Pretty cool that someone from corpo invests in art in the building besides the exhibition.

I also love the colors in her photographs. I think you will like these images: http://stat19.privet.ru/lr/0b179120620cf20ad7cb81eaa6e52724

In my opinion, the colors are just magical :)

She is very a beautiful model and for me her face is perfect. I cannot decide if I prefer her as a model or as an artist. She is great in both professions.
Unknown said…
She wanted to disappear because she was depressed. Because of her severe childhood, she thought that she was incarnation of evil and that she needed to be punished. Bodypainting was a kind of treatment for her.
Unknown said…
Finding her in the first photographs is indeed a challenge but this is exactly the purpose of her art :)
In this YT video they are using projector. It is now very popular method to capture outstanding photographs. I even try it once. If you have projector and a white wall you can also try it at home. However, Vera and Holder did not use projector. For every image they created set design.

It was not someone in the corpo idea but Anna Starak invited her ;) I guess she also funded the exhibition.
So how was Vera in real life? :) I envy you that you met her!

Richard Avedon said those worlds and I totally agree with him!
Wow, Liu Bolin’s art is really impressive! In some pictures it is very hard to find a person!

I have never heard about her, but it’s true that she’s amazing. She is amazing as painter, as photografer and she was also amazing as photomodel.
Paulina great person, and verry good work of him.
I think that all what Verushka does it’ s great and unique. My favourite is Avedon’s work. I like all what he did, all his photography is amazing. She is enigmatic and mysterious on his photos.
She’s unique painter. I’m fascinted of his bodyoainting. She creates chameleons, which can adapt to surrounding word. It’s amazing. It’s breathe-taking.

Look at this:

Isn’t it admirable?

Thank you for the video. I only wish I could understand what the lector said :(
Unknown said…
That sounds interesting and reasonable :) It's really cool she found relieve in art.

Thanks for sharing the story, Dominika.

What we can say about this is that Vera's artistic work, deals substantively with erotically stimulating act in the form of body painting, and nevertheless should also be called "erotica" (from the Greek ἔρως, eros "desire").

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erotica

In my opinion there is a very tight gap between the definitions of "erotic" and "pornography" and, we should distinguish whether the most of you agree with me that Veruschka's performance could also be called "pornography".

Let's do a voting maybe? ;)

Unknown said…
Dominika this topic is very interesting and I wonder if you would also like to take part in such an act. We could arrange some paint, photograpgers and do the photos ;)

Dominika you inspired me to go and check the exhibition.
After reading this post I google her name. I didn't know her.
Very attractive and inspiring for photographers person.
example you presented us are so perfect, I need to see more...
Veruschka's photo took by Avedon is definately one of my favourties! I would like to have it hanged on my wall. I've heard about her but I've never knew her whole story. She is definately ectremely interesting person. The icon of 60s as you mentioned. So I was glad to read about her.
But I don't understand why the scene in her movie was called "the most sexual off all time". For me it was only very thin almost anorexic girl tossing around:P

How did you know about this exhibition? :)
I'm inspired as weel. I will definately go there. But I must hurry not to miss it, because it ends by the end og the month...:)
The line there is very thin. I agree that it could be called pornography by someone...So I agree with you. How about you Dominika?:)
I agree that she is a great model but for me she is not beautiful at all. Quite the opposite. Her face is so unatractive, but the way she moves and poses is exceptional...

As Michal Kulesza. I read the article but I have nothing to say about it. It's just not my thing and I am not eligible to asses it. Pretty pictures of rather pretty(or personally not pretty at all) and very skinny woman(to refer to presentation from one of previous weeks). I can only wish her success.

It might be ignorant to say but in my opinion only very prim person could say that this is pornography.
Unknown said…
I am sorry Piotrek, but I agree with Robert. I do not see pornography in her art...
Unknown said…
I also do not understand why it is called the most sexual scene of all the time… For me she looks like she is high on drugs or something.
I have read about it in Harper’s Baazar :)
Unknown said…
Hmm ok to be honest I didn't know her:)
but after reading your article I 'googled' some her photos and now I have to say that its a little intrigue. It's difficult to comment, because I don't know a lot about photomodelling;)

But I remained YouTube video, where strange girl walks across the city without pants. Noone notice that becaouse of her body painting:
http://youtu.be/TadUMYgCGs8
What do you think about that idea? Someone could be so brave to do something like that?:D

It's a real challenge to find her on these photographs! I enjoy the ingenious art so I found the information on Veruschka very interesting.

There are more attractive women on this planet though... :)

'I still prefer photographs of Veruschka over Veruschka’s photographs :)'
Well, that made me laugh out loud :)
I'm not too much into art either, although I really liked the pictures. They made me think about the ideas of their author, of what is 'underneath' each picture, what were the reasons for making it...

I enjoyed both her art and pictures of her. I haven't heard about her before, but after reading your post I decided to go and see the exhibition. I'm curious about other pieces of her work because it's actually quite fun to try and spot the model in the surroundings. Similarly to others, I didn't find the scene the most sexual. Yes it was sensual but I wouldn't go as far as calling it 'the most sexual of all time'
Unknown said…
I didn't know her but after this article I will investigate her bio further. It looks very interesting maybe I even go to the exhibition.
Unknown said…
Me too ;) don't worry. I'm so happy that I could watch this video. View is sufficient in this situation ;)

In one thing I need to agree with all of You. It's magnificent. I googled it too:) and I think I need to go and see it with my own eyes:)
Hehe so we agree on that:P
I see...I like that magazine very much. Nice:)

I have never heard about Veruschka. She is really interesting person. It is wonderful that supermodel is interested in art and cooperates with popular artists like Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol. I’m surprised that she is a precursor of body-painting. It is really creative part of art. Artists do their projects on alive body, that move. I claim that this is difficult.

We don’t see model in some photographs, because she is painted and sometimes it is hard to distinguish her from the background. Painter has to be extremely accurate during painting to achive such a great result
Unknown said…
Before that article I have never heard about this woman. It is very interesting to see that one of the children of those who tried to elliminate Hitler managed to become sucessful without risk for her life. Photos as for me are demonstrating classical art of the times when those pictures were taken, through those photos I cannot say anything about personality of the woman, however I can say more about the style of the artists who made those photographs.
Unknown said…
To be honest, I don't look for something like this in the photography. I think a model's task is to create something beautiful with the help of photographer, using model's personality and facial expression. In my opinion, these photos don't show it at all.
Unknown said…
Yes, she is beautiful. These photos are also nice. I cannot elaborate on this topic ;(

Thank you for this short article with Veruschka in main role. I knew her before thanks to the genius Antonioni’s film "Blow up". Her body paintings are definitely amazing artworks. It's really hard to 'disappear' on photo in such way. It's magnificent, I wanna see more.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form.
