Week 6 [30.11 - 6.12] Why you should have a plant in your apartment?

We all know about the key benefits of plants, they using photosynthesis to turn carbon dioxide into oxygen, they are purifying the air and some of them even help with air ionization (which makes us feel better overall). Putting them in the apartment or house is also a great way to decorate rooms and give space a beautifying touch. But have you known about other blessings they can give us?

Plants generally inhale CO2 and exhale O2, however that happens only in the light stage of photosynthesis, so only during the day, nevertheless some flowers can extend this benefit and keep giving oxygen even at night. Krantz aloe, peace lily, and other succulents are the best option for bedrooms, having them makes us more oxygenated, we fall asleep faster and deeper. Also remember that ‘regular’ plants near your bed are not the best idea, because at night they breathe taking oxygen and release carbon dioxide.

The plus side of having green plants in your place is being more calm and relaxed. Studies show that looking at the green color helps to unwind and clear your mind. More than that if you work on your computer a lot or in general spend a lot of time in front of a screen looking at green might give your eyes some well-deserved rest. It is advised to put the plant in sight, somewhere where your eyes land often, so on the desk next to your computer or in the space behind so every time you look up from the screen your eyes and mind get a little break.

Shefflera

You don’t have to limit yourself to only green plants of course. There are lots of gorgeous and colorful flowers, most of them though are annual, which means that they last for one year and then dies. Obviously, you can keep planting them every year, if you want to enjoy the appealing view, or you can plant different annuals every year to change it regularly.

Petunia (annual)

If you have a balcony or even bigger windowsill you can even try planting your own vegetables (most of them need a lot of sun). Vegetables that you can easily grow in a pot are: cucumbers, tomatoes (the small kind), zucchini, pepper, beans, spring onion, and surely all kind of herbs.

Don’t forget that if you have your own small garden on your balcony or windowsill is very good for bees! All of the flowers and most of the vegetable plants are pollinated by bees, so don’t mind them if they want a little taste of yours.

Plants are very good companions and roommates, if you don’t have any (or just one cactus hidden somewhere), because you keep forgetting to water them, don’t worry. Here are some plants that you can rarely water and they don’t need much sun either:

  • Aloe vera

  • Dracaena marginate

  • Dracaena sanderiana

  • Nolina recurvata

  • Sansevieria

  • Zamioculcas (literally indestructible)

REMEMBER that if you have any animals to check if the plant you are willing to buy isn’t toxic to them!!!

Sadly, only one and really little. But I would love to move closer to forest or plan something on the balcony at least.

2. Visually do you prefer plants that are all green or flowers full of colors?
I like both of them. The harmony they create is just great. But if I have to choose I would pick the green ones perhaps.

3. Do you like surrounding yourself with plants and nature ( going to the Botanic Garden; forests, parks)?
YES, I love it. During vacation I usually go camping for at least 2 weeks. Being with nature mostly really help ease my mind. It is also a good way to practice new skills in order to survive more in less urban area.
I remember that there was an article about working in a room full of plants, probably during the first week. I commented on it saying that all my plants are dead and I can not take proper care of them. So what I would like to say is that nothing has changed since that article. I still have a few cactuses but I am not sure if they are actually alive… What I am sure of is the fact that I will not buy any more.

Visually I love all the plants. However, the plants that are all green reminds me of the ones that stay alive much longer, while I associate colorful flowers with drying out quickly. Nevertheless, these are just my associations which do not change the fact that if someone can take proper care of their plants, it doesn’t really have to work like that.

I absolutely love surrounding myself with plants and nature. Maybe not in my room and not with my dead plants but I would honestly be extremely grateful to have someone who would be living with me and actually knowing how to keep plants alive. Unfortunately, both of my parents are as defective as I am. However, whenever it comes to go somewhere or travel somewhere, I always choose to visit nature, to go to the park or travel to the National Parks. For me nature is just extremely beautiful and relaxing. I also love to take pictures and I feel like there is nothing more beautiful to photograph than nature. (ATTENTION SELF-ADVERTISING! 1.Do you have any plants in your home/ room? Do you plan to get some or more if you already taking take of a few?

I have 4 cacti and one bonsai tree in my room. I do not plan to plant and look after more plants, because I am afraid that I will not have time to care for them, and I am afraid that I will be plagued by worms.

2.Visually do you prefer plants that are all green or flowers full of colors?

I prefer green plants to colorful flowers. I associate the color green with summer and spring. I love football, also I associate the color green with grass and a football pitch. Additionally, by staring at the color green, your eyes regenerate.

3.Do you like surrounding yourself with plants and nature ( going to the Botanic Garden; forests, parks)?

love being in the forest, I like this peace, quiet, mysterious sounds and the smell of the forest. I like being in the forest both in summer and winter. I am a skier, and I can also say that I love to ski on the slopes that run in mountain forests, on the border of peaks and forest lines.

In my hometown we have plants. Most of them are orchids, cause they are pretty, they don't need much maintenance, and my mother likes orchids. Also, we have Aloe vera for about 17 years. I remember that my mom made aloe nose drops when we were sick. As I have moved to Warsaw, I have no plants here yet.

Visually do you prefer plants that are all green or flowers full of colors?
I prefer plants that are all green. I am planning to buy a few. Maybe it will be succulent, aloe vera or sansevieria. As you have mentioned in the presentation, they are not picky plants and do not need to be often watered.

Do you like surrounding yourself with plants and nature ( going to the Botanic Garden; forests, parks)?
Yes, I love walking in the parks, especially nowadays in strange circumstances. Also, I like spending time near the sea, river or lake. I do not mind some picnics, but I do not like campings.

I'd love to upload some pictures of my plants because I have some. I'm planning to have more but they are often pretty expensive so I wait for better economic times for the next purchase.

Visually do you prefer plants that are all green or flowers full of colours?
Depends... I like the view of both. I prefer buying plants for myself or others because they last longer and buy flowers for special occasions.

Do you like surrounding yourself with plants and nature ( going to the Botanic Garden; forests, parks)?
I have some plants and I try to go for a jog every day, to Łazienki park or Pole mokotowskie. Having plants have an enormous impact on my mind. I've realised it when I was moving out and I was taking my plants from the room. When I emptied the room from the greens it was a completely different place!

I'm currently living alone so plants are great compansions so I'm steadily turning my room into a jungle. I even have some that were referenced in the article (Aloe vera, Sansevieria, Zamioculcas) and I can concur that they are quite easy to take care of, so don't need excessive sunlight or to water them very often. Today I got a new Ficus and I'm quite excited.

2.
I think I prefer green plants, but I also like quite a bit violet plants.

3.
Yes, I do as most people. I especialy like the nature in the mountains, but parks are also great to chill.

You are planning to plant some plants on your balcony, so I would recommend you some flowers or small trees (like a lemon tree), or even bigger ones since you really like forests and nature.

If you are not so great with your plants you should definitely look at the list I made at the end of my post. It is listing plants that don’t need much of your time and in general, you don’t have to remember about them. You are also saying that being near nature is relaxing to you, like I wrote it might be the effect of looking at green color (and all of the plants from the list are green!).

I agree with you that when thinking of green plants spring and summer comes to mind. Also, I love that you have a few cactuses and a bonsai tree! I was thinking about getting a bonsai tree myself, after reading about them, but I haven’t bought one yet.

That is amazing that you actually used your own aloe vera to make something that helped you get healthy! I’m glad that you used my list for inspiration to pick some plants you are planning to have in the future, they all are really easy to take care of and all are green, as you like them to be.

I think that giving someone o plant that lasts longer than a bouquet is very nice and thoughtful. And I feel exactly the same about the ability that flowers have to completely change the spaces they are in. They give the room this vibrant, peaceful energy that is very nice to be surrounded by.

That’s awesome that you love being near nature and have so many plants in your room. I also have many plants that don’t need much light and water, including a Ficus that, despite the fact that when I got it I put it in a place that doesn’t get sunlight at all (now it is on the table where it is a lot of sun), grows extremally fast and after one year it got twice as tall as it was (now it is a little more than 1 m).
Very interesting presentation. Answering your questions:

1. I don't have any plants at home because I have a very small apartment and I have nowhere to put it. But soon I will move and I will think about a plant.

2. I think I prefer green plants to flowers. Maybe because the colors are subdued and do not mix. I don't like too many colors.

3. From time to time yes, I like to surround myself with vegetation. I mainly go to forests, but I like gardens too. Last summer I was in the gardens in Wilanów.
1. Do you have any plants in your home/ room? Do you plan to get some or more if you already taking take of a few?
Unfortunately, I don't have any plants in my room. Why? There are several reasons. First of all, it seems to me that visually the plants will not fit well with the decor in my room. I don't see a place where I could put a potted flower. Secondly, plants need to be looked after. You have to water them and check if the soil is moist. You have to observe whether the plant gets enough nutrients and whether it needs fertilizer. I don't have the time or the inclination for this. Plants beat me;) The last argument is that I live in the Kampinos national park, I leave the house and I am literally in the woods. Every day I deal with greenery and I do not feel the need for it to be in my room.

2. Visually do you prefer plants that are all green or flowers full of colors?
Visually, it prefers fully green plants more than colorful flowers. I think so because fully green plants are easier to fit into their surroundings. I mean aesthetics and color matching. A simple green plant is visually appropriate in many places, and colorful flowers in few. When deciding on colorful flowers, you need to do it very carefully and it is better to spend some time visualizing the room with such a plant.

3. Do you like surrounding yourself with plants and nature ( going to the Botanic Garden; forests, parks)?
I love it and this is the main reason why I like living in the countryside near to forest. I can get on my bike at any time and travel for kilometers through the lush forest. It is incredibly relaxing. Of course, walks are also a nice choice but I prefer sports in which I can get tired. I am convinced that closeness to nature makes us feel calmer. I highly recommend everyone to spend a few hours in the forest at least once a week to relax.

It is very nice that you plan to have a few plants in your new room, when you move. All green plants compose really good with each other and I think you will love having them around.

You said that you don’t want to have plants in your room, but also you are not very good at taking care of tchem, in this case if you want to give it a try, I would reccomend you to look at the list I made at the end of the post. The list contains plants that don’t take much of your time and are easy to take care of.
1. Do you have any plants in your home/ room? Do you plan to get some or more if you already taking take of a few?
I have plants in my room, some of them are mentioned above in the article like Sansevieria. I especially like Sansevieria. This plant has amazing feature. It converts carbon dioxide to oxygen at night when you really need some fresh air to regenerate fully in your room while asleep. This is most crucial in winter, when you cannot really open your windows due to the cold and smog.
2. Visually do you prefer plants that are all green or flowers full of colors?
I prefer my plants to be green, they seem more natural and less artificial. Green plants complement my room way better than colourful ones. I like colourful plant in gardens though. I do not have my own garden at the moment, but when I have one I will make sure to include some plants in it.
3. Do you like surrounding yourself with plants and nature ( going to the Botanic Garden; forests, parks)?
I like surrounding myself with trees. I often walk my dog to nearby forest. She is really happy there. I let her out from the leash so she can run freely. There are not many animals in the forest so she is not threatening anything. Parks and Botanic Gardens usually are too crowded for me.

1. From the beginning of the pandemic my girlfriend start to buy/steal/plant more plants in our house, and I was interested in this topic also. We planted an avocado tree(I guess this is the easiest plant which you could keep in your home), we bought more flowers every month and now when we have them a lot we tried to stop this process but it seems like we are already addicted to this 😊
Whenever we are going to our friedns, first of all, we are looking at their flowers, asking a lot of questions about the process of watering/changing ground/etc.
2. We have a mix between green plants and colorful flowers and it seems very natural, I hope in the future I’ll have a house and there I ill try to make my own garden(idk why it’s become so interesting at age 24 :D)
3. Yes, yes, and yes! In my native city I live close to the botanic garden and this the most beautiful place to walk/read a book/ just take a rest in my town.

1. Do you have any plants in your home/ room? Do you plan to get some or more if you already taking take of a few?

I am newly moved and don't have many plants yet. So far, I have a small pot in which to keep my favorite spices. I plan to fill my apartment with various green plants, but at the moment it is at the end of my shopping list.

2. Visually do you prefer plants that are all green or flowers full of colors?

I personally prefer all my plants to be green, many different shades without any flowers.

3. Do you like surrounding yourself with plants and nature (going to the Botanic Garden; forests, parks)?

Yes, I do. I love the sound and smell of the forest. Spending time surrounded by greenery allows me to calm down and forget about work.
1. I have few, but not too many. My problem is forgetting to water them so that's not my forte. In future, I would like to have lot of cactus and succulents precisely because they don’t have to care for them so much, but this will be when I move out parent’s home.
2. It mainly depends on interior of apartment, if there is little greenery, I think that all green ones would be better. if we have green walls, for example, flowers full of colors would be better.
3. I like, I think that it is much better to go for walk to some park or forest than to walk along streets of city. The vegetation definitely calms you down and allows you to feel better. Additionally, they produce oxygen so we can breathe better
1. Do you have any plants in your home/ room? Do you plan to get some or more if you already taking take of a few?

Unfortunately I don't have any in my room. I plan to get some after my renovation ends. I would like to have some plants that are easy to maintain so thank you for your article :)

2. Visually do you prefer plants that are all green or flowers full of colors?

I prefer them to be all green, because I think it would be more calm for my eyes. To be clear, I don't have any problem with having a little extra colors in plants, assuming that they are matching colors with other things in my room.

3. Do you like surrounding yourself with plants and nature ( going to the Botanic Garden; forests, parks)?

Yes, I like it a lot. I like to go to the parks and forests near my area to breath some fresh air, especially when I can go alone, so I can listen to some music and clear my minds as well. To be honest I don't do this as much as I'd like to, beacause I don;t have much time for it.
1. Do you have any plants in your home/ room? Do you plan to get some or more if you already taking take of a few?

Recently I bought a plant for my room, for this moment I have two. At the beginning of this semester, after reading an article about biophilistic design, I decided to buy myself a plant, because I spend many hours at my desk in the room while working

2. Visually do you prefer plants that are all green or flowers full of colors?

I don't know how to do it on plants but I prefer whole green ones. I associate them more with plants and they are more pleasing to the eye.

3. Do you like surrounding yourself with plants and nature ( going to the Botanic Garden; forests, parks)?
I like being surrounded by nature so much. Recently, due to a pandemic, I've been going for a walk to the forest more and more often. I think it helps me to calm down.
1. Do you have any plants in your home/ room? Do you plan to get some or more if you already taking take of a few?

Of course I have plants in my home. However, they are not strictly in my room. For as long as I can remember, my mother was crazy about flowers, so there are many of them in the living room. Having the comfort of living in a single-family house, most of the plants are located either on the terrace or in the garden next to the house. Personally, I am not planning on getting more plants any time soon, as I don't have time to look after them and sometimes I forgot to water them. A bit sad :(

2. Visually do you prefer plants that are all green or flowers full of colors?

Honestly, I prefer a bouquet of colorful flowers to greenery alone. I think green is overrated and I love it when at home or outside accompanied by colors on the flowers. Immediately you want to smile and your well-being improves.

3. Do you like surrounding yourself with plants and nature ( going to the Botanic Garden; forests, parks)?

Unfortunately, I was never really drawn to botanical gardens. I like plants around me, but somehow I'm not satisfied with seeing them and admiring any species. If you know what I mean.

1. Yes, I have some plants. I currently have aloe vera, sansewieria, a tree of happiness, lemon mint and ginger. In warmer seasons, I have more plants and even tomatoes on my balcony.
2. I prefer useful plants such as herbs and vegetables. Most of my plants are green, I don't like too many colors.
3. No, I do not. For me, botanical gardens etc are boring. If I'm going to the park, it's either a shortcut or when I'm with friends.I hate spiders and there are plenty of them in places like this.

I really like plants. I already have 4 in my apartment. I have two really big plants in my living room, one in my bedroom and one in the bathroom. I love sitting on my couch and be next to my big “trees”. I don’t plan to get more because I don’t really have any more space for them.

2. Visually do you prefer plants that are all green or flowers full of colors?
I prefer all green plants. They make me very calm and relaxed. However I am not racist about them. I like colorful plants too.

3. Do you like surrounding yourself with plants and nature ( going to the Botanic Garden; forests, parks)?
Yes, I love walking in the parks and forests with my girlfriend. It’s a good way to calm down after hard day.

1. Do you have any plants in your home/ room? Do you plan to get some or more if you already taking take of a few?

I have a few flowers at home. For a while I didn't have any and I think we should have some flowers in the house because life is better now. There is much better air in the house and a person functions better.

2. Visually do you prefer plants that are all green or flowers full of colors?

Visually I prefer colorful flowers as there is always more color in the house. And thanks to this, when I get up and see these beautiful, colorful flowers, I immediately want to live.

3. Do you like surrounding yourself with plants and nature ( going to the Botanic Garden; forests, parks)?

I love walking in the woods and gardens. There is so fresh air and beautiful nature then. My brain functions differently then when I come back from walking in the woods. In general, I love nature and animals that are in it.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form.
