(Week 4 16.11 - 22.11 ) Mukbang

What is mukbang?  ... Eating, to be more precise eating tones of food.

Watching someone eat is not like any kind of fun or intrigue, but once you dive deeply into the world of "mukbangers", you realize that there is a huge sect of society that actually loves to watch as masters stuff their faces with lots and lots of food.

Here I found a video "Untold Truths About Mukbang!!!" and yeah it is really really weird

1. What do you think about the video?
2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?

Comments

I wasn’t really surprised by the video as I have already seen and heard about mukbang on tik tok. Personally, I don’t watch exactly such things, but my guilty pleasure is watching programmes about insanely obease people. My boyfriend or grandmother are not able to watch it with me, as they find it really disgusting, but for me it is so addictive. I guess you can compare it to watching mukbang - you don’t understand it or you love it, there is nothing in between. I love eating and I feel like watching all those programs about obesity is helping me not to eat the whole chocolate at once or go to mcdonalds. But honestly, if I try to think deeper and ask myself a question “But what is actually interesting in it?” I just can’t answer… I guess there are just things like that that some people find addictive and the other ones don’t.

Answering the second question, I don’t think so. Being slim is one thing. As long as those people are young with a great metabolism, maybe it is possible. They will feel the effects when they are older. But when it comes to being healthy - absolutely no. If your organism makes you throw up the food you have just eaten, there is obviously something wrong. Your stomach has limited capacity for a reason, so everything you do which does not balance with that capacity is making you unhealthy. Throwing up is unhealthy. Having a stomachache is unhealthy. They might even risk rupturing their stomachs. This whole thing is just insane.
1. What do you think about the video?

I knew about this trend for a while, so it wasn't something new for me. I came across videos like this and tried to watch them, but almost right away I got grossed out by the amount of food that they are eating, especially that they eat a lot of junk food. I don't understand the reason behind it. If someone is lonely and wants to eat with someone else, a simple video of the person eating a normal amount of food would be enough. I've heard that watching mukbang when you are on a diet might help because you got so full of just watching them eat, that you don't want to do it by yourself. Or you just get grossed-out by them and food, which is completely reasonable form me.

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?

Maybe if they would be eating salads. But besides that, I don't think so. I'm sure that they have some kind of stomach ache or something similar, after making this kind of video.

1. It’s interesting, as you can learn something new about this … trend? :D However the use of strange and really random videos is too high :D I think I’ve heard about this custom before in one of Martyna Wojciechowskas episodes of “Kobieta na krańcu świata”. She visited some kind of Korean Mukbang fame to see how she lives and how her life looks like. It was this girls profession and she treated this as a full time job, but for me it was terrifying. Especially in the context what people can do for money.

2. I have no idea, I’m really bad in diet and calories oriented subjects. I think it is possible to stay slim if you are lucky enough to have strong metabolism or have enough time to workout everyday with full commitment. However, I would assume that gorging on fat and hard to digest food day by day would have a HUGE impact on your body and digestive system that probably would collapse after a few years.
1. What do you think about the video?

It was weird.. In my opinion it's just the trial to get attention. New trends for some vlogs, challenges, pictures on Instagram, posts on Facebook or Twitter it's the weird way to become an online's star.

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?

I don't think it's possible. Even if the figure stay well, the health will suffer. The food which we consume affects for our whole body not just for a couple of days but for our whole life.
This trend is fairly odd. I didn't know it's called Mukbanging, I suppose I saw those things when watching people like Furious Pete eating huge burgers or whole jars of Nutella just for fun, or guys from Epic Meal Time cooking pizza made of burgers and spaghetti. I think sometimes it's fun to watch, it's comparable to watching silly contests on TV, I suppose.

As for staying fit and healthy even when Mukbanging or eating large amounts of food, I think it cannot lead to anything else but health problems.

1. I absolutely hate mukbangs. For me, it's the worst trend to appear on the internet. I can't understand how people might enjoy watching and hear other people eat.

2. It is possible to stay slim. It's just natural and obvious that the next day after eating that many calories people are not as hungry as they will be usually. So in just a couple of days, their bodies are balancing themself out.
But I believe that it's absolutely impossible to stay healthy whilst stuffing yourself with that much food. It's not good for the digestive system, for natural hunger cues, and even for mental health. Usually, after that much food people will feel bloated, stuffed, and sluggish for a couple of days. The blood pressure will be all over the place and they might have even some mood swings. That comes not only from the amount of food they eat but also from the fact that it's almost always junk food.

1. What do you think about the video?
Good trend summary. I've heard about it but I pay no mind on it. I don't fully understand, why is it trendy but virals are often an unpredictable phenomenon.
2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?
I don't think that it is possible. I cannot find any rational reason, how it might work. The stomach has limited capacity. The food is almost always unhealthy. You can't exercise when you eat so much during the day.
1. In today's world nothing will surprise me anymore. I had heard of eating on time, but I just hadn't heard or even imagined about eating countless amounts of food and streaming it for viewers. If someone likes it, let them watch this type of event, I certainly will not do it.

2. Yes, I think you can eat a lot and stay fit and healthy. Our caloric balance, and at the same time the demand for calories, is determined by our lifestyle. A great example is the diet of Michael Phelps, who consumed 10,000 calories a day during his competition and was fit and healthly. If the average person ate so much, he would obviously get fat, but this is only due to the fact that he would have a lot of exercise than the swimmer I mentioned.

1. I think this trend is weird, at least for me. I have seen more than once on youtube and tik tok how people eat huge amounts of food. It's interesting, but I don't think it's good entertainment in the long run. People like other people to do things for them that they want to do. That's why I am able to understand people who like it. I also think that eating that much food is very unhealthy and that people who grow mukbang may end up badly. Health is more important than money and fame.

2. Everything is possible. I think that if someone combines such a diet with a lot of exercise and their genetics are resistant enough to such a diet, then it is possible. It seems to me that such cases are very rare, but they are.

This video was... weird. I've heard about this trend before (but I've never heard "mukbang" name) and it's hard for me to decide if it is fun or just simply gross. I like the video for pretty complex information on what/why/where of that trend. I've watched some EpicMealTime videos with humongous amounts of food and it was pretty fun. But when such activity is done by someone who's morbidly obese, then that's just sad and it's a real killjoy, at least for me.
I not only believe but I'm 100% sure that eating such amounts of fat/fast/unhealthy foods will lead to obesity. Of course everyone's metabolism is different, but there are limits. Even extensive training will not burn it out as diet makes 70% of weigh loss/sustaince.

1. I didn't watch this exact video, because I saw a lot of fragments of similar videos. It's gross. Especially when those Chinese folks start to eat seafood while it's still alive. Did you watch a video when a Chinese girl eats live genetals-like-looking mollusk? It starts squirting water while she does that. Who on Earth enjoys watching those vids?

2. It's quite possible. You don't know the true story behind those videos. Chances are that after this feast they go to the toilet, make themselves "return everything back", drink some laxatives and continue their day as nothing happened. Just like in ancient Greece, you now.
But if they don't do that... Oh boy, eating spicy food (and their sauces are spicy) is dangerous, eating too much food is dangerous AND eating raw food is super-duper dangerous.

1. What do you think about the video?
Honestly, I do not support all of this Mukbang. For me it is a sick invention for some stupid human mind. Of course, watching crazy people eating junk food has become popular and large corporations want to take advantage of this fact. In my opinion, promoting Mukbang is an insult to people. The fact that over 1 billion people go hungry every year is overlooked. Such a trend hurts me a lot. Maybe I would understand it if healthy food was promoted, but when you watch this video, these people are eating those tons of gross food, I feel like vomiting.

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?
I believe it is possible, but you have to do a lot of sports. From what I've read, Mike Tyson and Anthony Joshua (heavyweights boxers) ate over 5,000 calories a day in preparation for their fights. This is really a mountain of food, healthy food of course, not 5 Lumberjack Burgers at McDonald's. I guess I could never be a Mukbanger. I am the kind of person who just feels bad if eats too much.
1. What do you think about the video?

I don’t understand the phenomena of mukbang. For me, it's a sign of our times. Unnecessary consumerism and greediness.
Don’t get me wrong I love food, I love eating good food and sometimes I’m craving something unhealthy. But these videos are unthinkable!

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?

I truly don’t. Our bodies may be ok with digestion one big meal on a special occasion. For example Christmas Eve dinner. But the repetitive burden of our bodies is unhealthy, especially for our intestines. You may already know that in fact, our intestines are very, very important for our well-being and general health.
This kind of video may promote eating disorders. ED is so much more than anorexia and bulimia!

@Magdalena Pierzchała
My guilty pleasure is also tv programs about morbidly obese people as well!

I didn't enjoy it, I think it was a bit too long and repetetive. Regarding this new trend I think it's weird and is close to the videos of people squeezing pimples, so it's gross.

2.
I don't think so. I get it that for most of those influencer it's only eating on occasion that much but eating generally unhealthy food en masse is certainly no good.
1. What do you think about the video?
This movie scares me a bit. More specifically, I'm disappointed of human stupidity, the waste of time of people who watch it and the loss of health by people who eat. Besides, I don't like watching people gorge themselves on such amounts of food. It's a bit disgusting and, above all, uncultured. I find it surprising that so many people want to watch such content and spend money to watch it. However, I'm able to understand people who practice Mukbang. They found a very easy source of income that requires them to do nothing but eat and record it. It reminds me a bit of Instagram girls who publicize their half-naked bodies to make money from advertising or material for subscribers who want to see more. It's not ambitious enough work in relation to the civilization and technological progress of humanity in the 21st century.

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?
I think it's very possible to eat so much and still stay slim. Whether or not we stay slim is primarily determined by our genetics and metabolic rate. The caloric balance is next. We can eat a lot, but if we burn these calories by playing sports, we will still be thin. However, I'm sure that eating such amounts of food is very unhealthy and puts a strain on the digestive system.

1. It’s such a funny thing to me that something like mukbang was born on the Internet. Even just the fact that someone come with such idea to create content based on consuming enormous amount of food seems so crazy but genius. Truly, it’s possible to describe it as a normal type of guilty pleasure videos on YouTube. It can be compared to videos with squeezing pimples. It’s gross, but somehow it brings together a huge amount of interested people.

2. I believe people should stop asking opinions regarding such topics. Eating is basically a very complicated and unique for every person process which need to be balanced. Nothing works for everyone, it’s an essential point in this discussion. If someone struggles with finding own eating habit I recommend to go and see a dietologist.

1. What do you think about the video?

I think that this video was repetitive and kind of random, not much content with a lot of random gifs like a man eating sand (what?) or a scene from “Batman”, I had hard time understating what those short clips had to do with the content of video. As to Mukbang I must say I knew about this trend which started in Korea and it not that weird in my opinion. There are many untypical things that bring joy for people to watch for example FameMMA, ASMR or streaming games on Twitch. I do not think that it is weird, everyone has his own amusements and when there is demand there comes people who realise that demand and want to make money from that (or sometimes because of other reasons like popularity).

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?

I think it is possible to eat that much and stay silm (as proven it was proven in the video) but that being slim does not mean being healthy. I think that by overeating (especially fat or high sugar products) you are endangering your body to high cholesterol illnesses or diabetes.

1. What do you think about the video?
The topic of the mukbang is interesting topic where we get as a civilization. But i dont like the video itself. A few sentences was repeted several times during different topics and in som sort i felt as im watching the first few minutes on repeat over and over again. It was probably made on purpose to make video longer. And also using stock footage to fill the gaps was also iritating after some time. But why mukbang become popular is an interesting sociological topic. Its a pitty that it was only described what it is and not analize deeper.

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?
Slim maybe yes, healthy not so much. As said in the video unhealthy eating can have severe negative efects on your organs such your hearth, the kidneys or your liver where the extra fat will be put.

1. What do you think about the video.

As my colleagues mentioned above, it's a weird trend, but it so funny to see that the final "customer" will watch almost every good-looking content and will find something valuable in it. Also, it looks like a next generation of a popular social media genre called 'food porn', so it was doomed to success.

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?

It Of course not for all of the eaters, but some people can stay slim and even benefit from it. It all depends on the human's lifestyle and metabolism.

1. What do you think about the video?

I haven't heard about this trend untill reading this article. In my opinion it's a bit weird but if someone like doing/watching it it's her/his choice and I don't mind.

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?

I think it's to general question. It depends on the food type and the other habits of the person who practice it (for example if he or she play sports, etc). Nevertheless eating that amount of food in a long term could be harmfull for us and our organism can get used to that and this can bring some real consequences in health terms.
1. What do you think about the video?
Some time ago i heard about mukbang. I knew it is quite popular in some asian country but i didn't know it is about Korea. For me there is nothing fascinating. I mean i am not fan of this and i problably wouldn't participate in this but the video gaved me a few new informations so it was nice to broad my knowledge a little bit.

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?
It depends. In last time i am interested about healthy lifestyle. If you want keep being slim you need to burn that many calories as you eat -> in some ways you can turn up the metabolism which can help you to eat more. Moreover if you want be healthy it is important to provide the correct micronutrients and macronutrients.

1. What do you think about the video?
It's... Really weird. I simply cannot understand the fact that people are watching people eat. And nowadays people that eat and are streaming that... Are getting money for... Showing how they eat on live stream.
2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?
It is possible to still be slim but not healthy. Burning calories is tough task and i feel like a lot of illnesses are literally at the door. But what do I know? Trends in XXI are weird. And i guess they will stay that way
1. What do you think about the video?
I’ve heard once or twice about this quite specific trend but it didn’t really appeal to me. Thanks to this video I had an opportunity to learn some facts about Mukbang. I didn’t know that watching how somebody is eating enormous amounts of food may be an entertainment for other person and that this kind of videos have such a big audience. I didn’t even try to watch Mukbang videos. I was enough with those short parts which were in this video and I have already found it pretty disgusting. I really like watching vlogs about food, cooking or even people who try some weird exotic dishes, but I think that this is something different. I don' t really understand what may be interesting in watching another person eating tones of food which can even cause them to vomit.

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?
I think this is possible but it may be highly irresponsible. Young people have better metabolism, so usually they can’t feel or observe bigger changes in their body caused by eating junk food. The effects will appear after a few years when their metabolism slows down and their body starts to age their organs will suffer from excess of sugar, fat etc. which can turn into some serious diseases.

A few years ago I watched a short documentary about mukbang. The main character was a girl from Korea, she cooked with her mother, and then she streamed how she eats. At the time, it seemed to me that it was mainly for social reasons, that she didn’t need to eat alone and she allowed others to eat in company. How mukbang is presented in this video is shocking to me. What is the goal of eating that much at once? The money is not worth the sacrifice. I sincerely doubt that a healthy person could eat so much. Especially junk food!

The trend presented in the material is definitely not healthy. Food is very important to us, I myself am a person who likes to talk about food. So I don't see anything wrong with broadcasting meals, for example on YouTube channel. But not in the form of a mukbang. I bet when the mukbang people are recording, it’s the only meal they eat that day or for two more. Such a diet cannot be healthy, especially since they eat very fatty and caloric meals. The fact that they exercise for a few hours later is certainly not enough to mitigate the harmful effects on health.

1. What do you think about the video?
I've seen this type of show on YouTube before. I didn't know, however, that it got its name like Mukbang. I watched several such films on Polish and foreign channels. I saw, among other things, for example Polish youtuber channel - Maksymalnie.
I do not like such content, sometimes just out of curiosity I will turn it on and see how much a person can eat, for example, Big Mac’s within an hour. The movie is quite boring and some scenes from famous movies are downright weak. However, it can be viewed as a curiosity.
I agree that such content can have a negative impact on the nutrition of many people, especially children who watch it.

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?
I think you can eat so much and be lean if you have a sporty lifestyle and have a good metabolism. A good example is the Polish youtuber epic cheat meal.
On the other hand, I believe it has a negative effect on physical and mental health. As we can see in the video, it is usually unhealthy food because it is more interesting to watch. Such examples can be seen on the epic cheat meal channel, where he eats 1 kg of Nutella in a few minutes.
1. What do you think about the video?

I have never heard about mukbang before, however, I watched some movies/series related to eating large amounts of food. The video was quite surprising to me, but I think the mukbang phenomenon was described well. I am totally the person, who is grossed by eating noises. I hate when people eat close to the microphone. In addition, whenever I watch someone eating, I get very hungry, so this video was difficult to watch - I had to take a meal break :D I agree with my colleagues that this trend is a little bit weird.

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?

I think it is possible to eat that much food and stay slim. As they said in the video, some people who take part in mukbang are able to exercise several hours a day. Maybe some of the "mukbang" people eat only one big meal a day. I definitely prefer eating often small amounts of food rather than huge amounts, for example once a day.
1. I am familiar with this genre of video because a long time ago I started to get carried away with the genre of video called ASMR. And sometimes Mukbang is included in this genre. The main feature of the broadcast is that there should be a lot of food, and the eater usually absorbs it as loudly as possible. Some people associate the popularity of such an unusual entertainment with the flow of ASMR videos - a few years ago, videos began to appear on YouTube in which people, for a long time, whisper about everyday things. Under the #ASMR tag, you can find thousands of videos in different languages, including Russian, in which girls and guys quietly select food for your cat, issue your passport or help you choose the right suit. Such videos with RPG elements can help you get rid of anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia and other ailments.
The sounds of eating food may also be able to calm you after a hard day at work, but such broadcasts are more likely designed for those who do not feel like eating alone.

2. I think you need to do everything within the limits of your well-being and health. During a trip to the DPRK, a director from Singapore filmed a video in which a local resident talks about several dishes, copying South Korean Internet stars.
The young girl showed the camera pizza, burgers and pancakes, which are rarely found in various restaurants in Pyongyang. The striking similarity of the behavior in the video of the girl from the DPRK with the bloggers of South Korea, obviously, speaks of the possibility of the inhabitants of such a closed country not only to get through the Internet into the outside world, but also to adopt the fashion trends of their neighbors.
1. I was already familiar with mukbang videos, but not exactly with their story and timeline at which they emerged, so this video has helped me to understand this trend a little bit more. Even though I've seen some American mukbangs, I wasn't aware that it become so popular in the US, almost as much as in Korea. I was also surprised, that so many people find loud eating noises repulsive. Personally, I enjoy watching mukbang videos especially the ones that include recipes. I get hungry by watching them, and I've actually tried making some of the healthier meals that I've seen in mukbangs, and they were really tasty! When it comes to the history of this trend, I'm not surprised that this kind of 'sharing' meals has emerged. Aside from the basic need for food, sharing a meal with family and friends has been a vital part of socialising in all parts of the world. With the coronavirus outbreak, I can see why it's still gaining popularity. People who are living alone can have some taste of normality when watching those videos.
2, It's hard to say, as different people tend to have different metabolism, but I'm sure that eating excessive amounts of food is not only unhealthy but wasteful too. I don't see why mukbangers would go to such lengths like jeopardising their health only for views.

1. What do you think about the video?

I heard about Mukbang before in context of South Korea and stumbled upon them on YouTube. Usually mukbang video makers record silent videos except for the sound of how they eat, it can be pre-recorded or a livestream. I think it's quite weird, but can be interesting if the food that is eaten looks nice.

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?

It seems possible, but with effort and within self limitations. It can depend on what kind of food the mukbangers eat and how often. If it is everyday and consists of sweets, then I think it will have impact after some time.

1. What do you think about the video?

I've seen it on the internet before. However, I don't understand this. I would not dare to do this in exchange for wanting to appear in the Internet. In my opinion, what they are doing is dangerous for them, because sooner or later such an amount of food may turn out to be harmful to health. When I watch movies with food I start to get hungry, so that's the main reason why I can't watch it.

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?

I dont think its possible do it like in the movie. If we want to eat a lot and stay slim and healthy. We need to eat wisely and not eat everything. In addition to a good diet we need exercises. Movement is essential. Even by eating wisely but not doing any sport. U cant stay slim and healthy. This is my opinion.

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?

I don’t think that you will stay healthy after eating this much food. You may stay slim, because of fast metabolism. But same time you may get diabetes or an eating disorder. So I do not think it’s a good idea to stress your organism this much, eventhough it is a trend

Video is really interesting. In my opinion mukbangs are fascinating and this video confirmed my beliefs. As for the second question, I believe you can eat so much and be healthy and slim. Everything depends on what we eat. If somebody eats only junk food - unhealthy and greasy, then this person could have problems with health. Even if he or she trains every day. That depends on fat burnung, hormonal dieseases and exercises that he or she do. So, I think that you could do mukbangs and be slim and healthy.

I saw this kind of videos before. It's also known as eating show where host comsumes large quantities of food while interacting with the audience and everything is online. I don't know how bored I would have to be to watch this kind of entertainment. I don't understand this trend but for sure it shows that people can do anything to be fameous. What I think about this video? I watch this with disgust because I don't like watching somebody eating like this and I don't think this kind of trend is healthy.

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?
I don't think that You can eat that much food and stay slim and healthy. Any kind of food, even vegetables or fruit is not healthy in this amount. In this video people were eating junk food which is impossible to stay slim.
1. What do you think about the video?

I don't really get the idea and popularity of Mukbang-themed YouTube channels. I don't get in, but if they would pay ME just for eating lots of food from my favourite restaurants, then I wouldn't complain. I would eat a lot of ramen on these vlogs, if you asking me.

2. Do you think is it possible to eat that much food and stay slim and healthy?

Yeah, I think it's all about knowing your limits and keeping in mind that if you want to eat good and look good, you have to work hard. Really simple but some people just don't get it. Everything has it's proce, even this small chocolate you ate today(I know you did..).
