Week 6 [24.04-30.04] - Alternative Ways of Brewing Coffee

Almost all of us start a day with a cup of coffee. Some people drink coffee with milk, others only black. Every day we can meet crowds in famous coffeehouse chains like Starbucks or Costa. In such places coffee is made in a pressure espresso machine but there are other methods of brewing coffee.

1. Moka pot

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a3/Moka_brewing.jpg

The process of brewing coffee in this machine is based on boiling water which passes through under pressure by the ground coffee beans. The most popular company produce moka pots is Bialetti. Moka pot was invented in Italy. The Moka Pot is powered by fire or electricity power. They are traditionally made of aluminium or sometimes made of stainless steel. This is an easy way to prepare coffee at home and makes coffee very aromatic.

2. Chemex

A simple type of coffee machine in which the boiling water in the glass dish slowly seeps through a paper filter filled with ground coffee beans. Filters are made of thicker paper than used in standard filters for electric drip coffee makers. This machine was invented in 1941 by Peter Schlumbohm. To this day, it’s produced by Chemex Corporation.

3. Aeropress

It’s a very simple coffee machine that is an invention of Alan Adler. It’s a very easy way of making espresso coffee without investing in expensive espresso machines. The machine consists of a piston and a filter chamber through which the coffee beverage is compressed.
The Aeropress uses pressure to brew coffee. This is a very comfortable device because it is light, easy to clean and the only thing you need to make is to boil water :)

4. Coffee Cone (Drip)
The coffee cone is the least expensive way to make coffee. You only need paper filters and a ceramic brewer

5. French Press

French Press was invented by an Italian designer Attilio Calimani in 1929. It’s is a tall, narrow cylinder with a plunger that includes a mesh filter. The ground coffee is placed in the cylinder, and off-the-boil water is then poured into it. The coffee and hot water are left in the cylinder for a few minutes and then we must slowly push down the plunger, in this way we separate the grounds from the infusion.

In Warsaw we have a few places where coffee is brewed by alternative methods, for example Ministerstwo Kawy (http://www.ministerstwokawy.pl).

On this website there are several videos how to prepare coffee with the above methods - http://coffee-affair.co.uk/alternative-coffee-brewing-methods/

  • Have you ever tried to brew coffee using any of these ways?
  • Did you drink coffee made with one of the alternative methods?
  • Do you know some places where coffee is brewed by alternative methods? Can you recommend some?

I drank coffee made by French Press and Moka pot, but to be honest I'm not coffee type, so I was unable to see some significant difference. I started to drink coffee last year and I'm drinking it ti today, but not everyday. I heard from a barman, that taste have to develop, that's why you like taste of coffee and alcohol when you're older.
I don't know any place, because as I mentioned I'm not really into it, but maybe drinking occasionally will develop into
gourmet?
Which one is your favorite?

To be honest I'm trying to avoid coffee. I'm not drinking it unless I feel really tired and exhausted. I know that coffee isn't such healthy.
I have never drunk coffee prepared in any of those ways. As I said I don't drink much coffee at all and if I have to I prepare it in traditional way.
I have no idea about such places where you can try coffee prepared by alternative methods, but I'm sure there are a lot of such places in Warsaw.

I love this topic. I drink even 3 coffees a day. In the past I drank only instant coffee. I never went to cafes like COSTA because when I saw prize of 15 zl for one coffee I thought that I can buy a jar of instatn coffee for 20 zl. When my parents bought a very good coffee machine I learnt real taste of coffee. Today I rarely drink instant coffee. Everyday I make Chemex coffee, this kind of coffee is stronger than instant coffee, but I still think that Costa is too expensive. I have always thought how many chemicals are in instant coffee. When you drink it there is nothing left in the cup. I have used Moka pot. I haven't used the rest. In the future I will buy real coffee machine which will do everything and I will press only one button. I have a question: Are Moka pot and Coffee Cone (Drip) the same?

I have never been a big fan of coffee, but I have been drinking coffee thanks to French Press method. It was very good, but to I don't see a big difference. I prefer tea and I drink different types of tea on the daily basis, while coffee is just a way to wake me up when needed. I recommend hibiscus - this is my favourite one.

I like you topic very much!
I prepare coffee at home in two ways: cofee machine or moka pot.

The first way is much commonly used by me because it's fast and very convenient. I need to add water only and have coffee :) What's more, I don't need to clean anything - my coffee machine does it on its own :))

Second way is using moka pot. It takes litte more time but in my opinion coffee tastes better. There is one disadvantage - preparing and cleaning takes time. Perhaps not so much, but still. That's why more often I use coffee machine.

I think I understand you :) Coffee from moka pot has got really strong taste so I prefer coffee from automatic coffee brewer. As for chain cafes my favourite is Green Caffe Nero I love this atmosphere :)
Unknown said…
I agree with you I also have moka pot but now I rarely use it beacuse making coffee from an automatic coffee machine is faster. I read that moka pot shouldn't be cleaned with dishwashing liquid, we should use special cleaning agents ;)

I like many kinds of tea, my favourite is taste of chocolate with chili but I also like taste of coffee and I can feel the difference between different types of coffee and brewing methods.

Moka pot and Coffee Cone are another method of brewing. In moka pot coffee water is passing under pressure through the coffee and in coffee cone we overfill boiling water through the coffee :) Coffee Cone is similar to chemex but we use different types of filters, in Chemex method filters are thicker and coffee is poured into a special dish not into the cup like in coffee cone

Maybe I'm not a gourmet, but I really like coffee and I tried coffee making with all the above methods :) Much depends on the type of coffee but I prefer coffee from the aeropress. If you have a chance then I would recommend you to try! :)

Coffee isn't unhealthy if it's drink moderately, 3 coffee is daily limit. Contrary to appearances in Warsaw there aren't many places where coffee is prepared by alternative methods, still much more popular are chains cafes.
I drink coffee made by French Press. It really tastes good, but I'm no an expert and don't really require too much from coffee. I love to start a Saturday morning with cup of good coffee. Maybe I should visit some new places and try coffee made with one of alternative methods.

I think it's good idea you discover other flavors of coffee, each of these methods causes makes coffee taste a little different ;)

Personally I use French Press for coffee. It tastes much better for me than coffee made in normal homemade way (pouring boiling water to a cup). However, I don't drink coffee often, maybe once or twice a week, so better taste of French Press might be just my personal opinion.
Sadly, I don't know any fancy places in Warsaw, where you can drink good coffee :(

I have never liked coffe, until I tried high quality one from express. Problem is that it is very expensive. One day, my friend prepared coffee with moka pot. No longer then week later I had my own moka pot. I think that it is amazing creation. It is much cheaper than coffee machine and after some practice one can prepare even better coffee with it. I would like to try Aeropress, as I heard that it is also amazing.

I think advantages of these devices are small and easy to move, automatic coffee makers take up more space.
Unknown said…
I admire that you drink coffee twice a week, for me two coffee a day is the minimum ;)
I'm not a big coffe drinker, but I have tried the French Press method maybe one or two times. I think i didn't drink coffe made by alternative methods, at least not that I can remember. I don't know what kind of brewing methods do they use but I like the coffe from "Pożegnanie z Afryką" :).
Unknown said…
I was there, great place :) They have very good coffee with coconut aroma!
I brewed coffee in Moka pot and tried one made in aeropress and I have to say it was really good but I can't tell if it was because of a brewing method or a coffee itself. I haven't' been in any place where coffee is brewed using an alternative methods but this article encouraged me to visit place like that.
To be honest I’m not really a coffee person.
I don’t really like its taste and smell, so I drink coffee rarely for example when I have a lot of work and I’m feeling too lazy to go to the market and buy some energy drink.
When I make my coffee I use espresso machine, and add so much milk and sugar that you can’t really taste the coffee.

Personally I like coffee taste so I usually drink some coffee everyday. I know every of those techniques without aeropress. I've used to make cofee with moka pot but now... there are coffee machines everywhere and taste of coffee made by them is quite the same but faster and easier to brew.
Unfortunately , I don't like coffee , more like different sorts of tea , but just saw a home fixture for "Moka pot" basically our family loves coffee my mom and she spoke well about the "Moka pot" , perhaps she will advise other ways in this article.

I am addicted to coffee it is first thing I do every morning. I always make coffee using moka pot. It is very simple, you don't have to separate coffee from grounds and it has a great taste.
I don't know any places to recommend you, because the city centers are dominated by power cords, where the coffee is shitty.

Why are they called "alternative"? Alternative to what? :P Moka pot, coffee cone or french press are, in my opinion, the most common ways of brewing coffe, as many people just don't have enough money or space for coffee machine.
I am a coffee person, but I try not to drink too much of it. I usually make coffee at home (moka pot) because it's cheaper than drinking it in cafe (therefore I can't recommand any place to visit).
I am not a coffee fan because it does not work for me. I can easily go to sleep after drinking two or three of them. But I love Red Bulls and other energetic drinks that have a lot of caffeine in them.

We and my girlfriend have Moka pot in our home. Tried coffee from it few times and it really tastes better than traditional express.

Another "not a fan of coffee" here:) Although I have a moka pot at home, it's an awesome simple solution for those who drinks coffee sometimes or has friends preferring coffee over tea and doesn't want to buy a pricey coffee machine.

Not a coffee person here though I drink it occasionally. Like when can't go to sleep due to mountain of work to do, coffee helps in those moments so I do appreciate this magical elixir.
Thanks to my mom the taste of italian coffee from bialetti moka pot is no longer just a overheard legend for me, so I can recommend it. Still, not a habit for me, I prefer tea or a cocoa on those cold winter evenings.

I used to prepare my coffee in Moka pot. It was very interesting for me. I remember the first smell of fresh coffee in my house. It was amazing just like in a café. Lately somehow I stop using it ( maybe because of the time of preparation, I don’t know ). I hope in the future I will come back to this method again. I always wanted to try coffee from French press and compeer the taste of espresso to the others.
I don’t know any places in the Warsaw where coffee is brewed in alternative methods. When it comes to cafés I prefer to go to the verified places where coffee is prepared from the express. Out of curiosity I will definitely will try the other ways.

1) To be frank i tried all of these, and the best one in my opinion was Moka pot.
2) As i said, yes i did although only at home or at my friends.
3) Unfortunately i know no such places, but if i knew i would have told as much people as i could.

I am a coffeeholic :) I have tried different ways of brewing, except of aeropress. At home I use a coffee machine of French press. I also like Turkish coffee and coffee brewed on the hot sand. I can't recommend places in Warsaw, only in Ukraine. In Warsaw I visit only Green Cafe Nero, Costa, Kids&Friends and a few more small places, sorry, I don't remember the name. But I prefere coffee made with traditional coffee machine.
I'm not a regular coffee drinker because caffeine has very little effect on me. As a result, I occasionally drink coffee from coffee machine since I like it for its taste. I think I have never drunk coffee made with one of these methods, but your article and the comments above encouraged me to give it a try.

I love coffee but I'm a poor student and now I don't have money to buy real coffee machine but I'm using a "French Press" amazing device which makes my day better.
I don't know any places of alternative coffee brewing but I'm going to visit Ministerstwo Kawy, thanks!

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
