Week 12 [13-19.06.2016] Why individual sports are better than team sports?

Why individual sports are better than team sports?

While there are benefits to both team and individual sport, they differ vastly. In my opinion, the main disadvantage of team sports is that success or failure depends on many components. Even if some players of a team are really tallented and skilled, still they may not be able to win. But as you can see, this imperfection of team sport is not affecting it too much. In fact team-work based sports like football or basketball are very popular all over the world. In my opinion, it’s happening because individual sports are sadly less interesting to watch. This may be due to fact that team-work based sports creates more action. And as you know, if there is a lot of interesting action in some movie, the movie will attract more people. In fact, even if I’m a big fan of individual sports, I have to admit that I prefer to watch football over tennis.

Returning to the theme, why individual sports are better? Here are some positive benefits of individual sports:
- All is up to you! Your success is entirely dependent on your own efforts. If you lose a match, you can’t hide behind your teammates, blaming them for your failure. Being carried to victory by your team is a nice thing, but in this scenario, can you call yourself a „winner”? This benefit is mentioned first, because for me it’s the most important fact. Individual sports teaches us that, we are responsible for every decision or move that we take. No matter if it’s competition or real life.
- Self motivation - Individual sports teach us how to motivate ourselves. If you want to improve, you decide to spend more time on it. There’s no preassure from your team-mates, the drive has to come from within.
- Self-pacing – Working alone to build skills in chosen sport allows You to work at your own pace, perfecting and developing your abilities rather than being pushed forward before you are ready. It can be really important for people with many life changes.
To assume, if you like having control over your performance or being part of a team puts preassure on you as you are worry about letting your team-mates down, the best option for you is picking individual sports.

-What do you prefer, individual sports or team sports?
-After reading my presentation, can you agree with me that individual sports are better than team sports?

Comments

I love sports personally and in my opinion it is not only good for our physical health but also for our mind. I prefer individual sports because it is simple to keep my trainings without problems of adjusting schedule to other team members. After reading your article I agree absolutely with you. As you said self motivation is very important and I see huge difference, because within team I see better of worse players and I feel that it is not fair too other. Doing trainings also enhances me to work on my skills like self-discipline, eating habits, measuring my goals and keeping track of training intervals. Nevertheless appreciate the companion of my friends, because it is great to talk and get busy when you are tired.

I am not obsessed with sports, but I like it and I see that it is good for my body. I prefer gym of exercises in park or swimming pool. I also like individual trainings and never find any excitement during team trainings. It is very hard especially in high school when only few people are happy about doing that and all the rest don’t want to play at all. Maybe professional players act differently, but in my opinion it only makes troubles. I agree with you after reading your article because you also added few interesting arguments to the subject.

I completely agree with your point of view on individual sports. During my life I have been participating in both types of activities. I decided to switch to individual sports only after I realized that team effort does not motivate me as much as my own performance. Actually even when I was playing team sports everything was about my performance. I could loose much but still be content with myself, because I knew that I did my best. Even my teams lost did not motivated me to work harder. There were also other factors that drove me to individual sports. Once I played in football team where team was extremely toxic. In case of lost match players would always find someone to blame, it was never their bad performance. After few matches with this team I realised that I do not want to participate in such "shaming" of others (and I will not accept shaming me for some poorly planned actions). I know that in individual sports the only person to blame is me, and my loss means that it was only me who could do better. It had much more effect on my attitude than loss of my team.

Uh..., personally I really don't like any team sports. I truly despise football and suchlike sports and hate the fact that people spend so much money on the whole industry. Furthermore I don't like watching any sports at all but I definitely prefer individual sports if I had to make a choice. Don't get me wrong physical health is definitely very important and I like to exercise myself and I like different types of activities but I never watch any kind of tournaments. I can appreciate someone's dedication and hard work put into their physical skills but I don't find watching them enjoyable.

I always hated physical education at school because all we did were team sports. I was always a thin and kind of fit child (out of school activities) but I fully understand why kids these days aren't interested in exercising at all if everything they get to do is either kick or throw a ball. I remember I loved a rare occurrence when we were taught to vault over a horse or any type of gymnastics for that matter but a few kids would always say they were afraid of jumping so the lessons stopped! If kids were scared of playing dodge ball no one batted an eye and they were forced to play. I always found that to be mind boggling.

I think both individual and group sports represent important values. While I agree with the benefits you've mentioned, I don't think they outweigh those of the group sports. A human cannot function without a community nor can they sacrifice their individuality for the sake of said community. Again, balance is needed. I think swimming is a good example. My student is a swimmer and she participates in both individual and group competitions. She has to balance both mindsets, which are very different. For example: your own ambition is tempered and at the same time supported by your team. You also learn to fuction alone and in a group. I think through combining both of those mindsets, your life has a bigger chance of being balanced and happier.
I completely don't agree that individual sports are better than team sports, especially after reading your presentation. I'd say that for every advantage of individual sport, you could formulate an advantage of team sport. It's like comparing some type of food to some type of drink.

I do prefer individual sports myself, because I do them to stay fit and feel better, but I'm also no pro. I sometimes play team sports, but mainly with friends and only for fun.

I agree with you that individual sports have a lot of adventages e.g. as you mentioned your achievements only depends on you and you don't have to motivate your team mates to be good players. For me it's the most problematic aspect of team sports because we can meet with different levels of motivation in the team and you care more about winning than others. This feeling may create frustration between you and team mates. On the other hand I think that group sports give you nice lesson of ability to work in a group which is useful in work. You learn being cooperative, having high comuunication skills or good conflict resolution skills. To sum up I think that you can't determine which type of sport is better and it depends on the individual preferences of the human. I prefer team sports because for me important is fun and integration with people. But if I take sports seriously I will prefer individual sport because easier achieve success which is calculated on you.

Thanks for your comment Cezary. It's nice that this "wall of text" is making sense to somebody. Reffering to what you wrote about company of your friends, It's sad that in individual sports, You can't "play" with your friends. But instead of that We can compete with them, and show them Who is the Boss :D
Unknown said…
I don't watch sports at all. But playing team sports with friends is fun so I don't think they're inferior. On the other hand I only do it for fun and have no intention to change that. In short I'm quite indifferent to the subject.

Thanks for your comment. You are right, I remember how mad I was when almost whole class wanted to play football. Even if there were a few people including me, that wanted to try something else, still we was forced to play with the rest of class.

I agree with you, and I am the one who prefer individual sports as well. It doesn't connect to all things, I really love to work in a team when it comes to design problem or anything else. But with sports I feel more comfortable to count on myself. It helps me not feel guilty when I screw something - when I do bad in individual sport I am the only one who takes responsibility for mistakes.

When it comes to watching sports I am not a big fan of watching games like football or any other team sport, but I can spend hours on watching snowboard halfpipe or slalom, I like to watch Tour the France or any other bike sports, Tennis is also more interesting to me than football :D But in general I don't like to watch sports, it's not that much interesting to me :) I prefer to train instead of watch ^^

Everything you wrote is true. I hope that physical education teachers will change their approach, because as You mentioned kids aren't interested in exercising at all. If this continues, I can see Polish citizens fat like people living in United States. They are even celebrating weddings in McDonalds :D -> http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/weird-news/mcdonalds-bristol-couple-hold-150-2099464

Yeah of course combining both of individual and team sports can make your life better. But what do you mean by writing community? I can agree with You that human cannot function without community, but team sport is not required to make one. In individual sports we also have community, but no with our teammates but our challengers.
Unknown said…
Thanks for your reply. I think that it's individual preference, what You will choose as better. I think that our opinion about sports is created in school, especially by your physical education teacher.
Unknown said…
I see your point, but for me playing team sports is much more fun. Making team effort is harder than doing something solo, i feel like theres much more work in it.
Unknown said…
Generally I likened sports to human life, so a 'community'/other people would equal a 'team' in sports :) I meant it merely as a metaphor. I agree with you that team sports aren't required to make a community, but it does form, naturally, when you're part of a team.

I always really liked sports, but I prefere team sports, because it was more fun.
I agree with your arguments and now I also like this individual form of disciplines.

I really do not feel like individual sports are especially better from team ones. As much as I like to watch historical medieval battles, I do not really like watching football. And the same goes for individual sports. One sport can be entertaining and interesting for someone, it really does not matter if it is individual or team played.
Unknown said…
I like sports a lot, but I hate team sports as for me they are the most boring.
Individual sport is 100% depends on you, your training and mind-set. When the MMA fighter is approaching the cage and you know that there is only he against his opponent it is the most interesting moment. We can see the glory of human determination, ability to ignore pain, overcome personal fears and weaknesses as he is the only person he could trust to. There will be no his teammates to back up the wrong decision or compensate his lack of training.

Unfortunately, I can’t agree with you about your thesis in the article. We can’t say about individual sports that it develops you more than team sports. In both cases, our development depends only on you. If you want to be a good player you have to practice intensively in both cases. According to me in team sports we require more training and dedication because not only you exercise your own technique and condition but not only you need to practice team tactics but also team play (playing in a team/you need to be a team player).
My impression of this article is that you based your article on bad experiences at school regarding PE classes where there are maybe two people who can play and want to play, others sit on the bench. Training in a professional team, each player is equally determined to succeed, and aware that if even one person/player is missing the team would not function correctly. But I agree with you that sports are important, no matter in what form. It is important to bring us health and fun.

Well i think that it is a quite dangerous field with the statement of "Better" kind. But yeah it is your subjective opinion.

Questions:
-What do you think about sports?

I think it is a very vital part of social life, but nowadays we can observe some evolution of that phenomenon as well as a term.

-What do you prefer, individual sports or team sports?

Both!

-After reading my presentation, can you agree with me that individual sports are better than team sports?

Nope, because i think it is a purely subjective case :)

Ever since I was little I preferred individual sports. Every team based sport I tried I was terrible at, always being the kid that runs away from the ball. I have a hard time working in a tam in general, not only in sports but also while working on something. Still, I really like individual sports. While I never was good at PE, I was good at horseback riding. I think some people just like to do things their own way while others prefer working in a team.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
