Week 12 [13-19.06.2016] Adult Swim - When The Kids Go to Sleep

In this presentation I would like to show You one of my absolute favourites in terms of humour, aesthetics, animation and weirdness - the mighty Adult Swim.

I guess many of you can wonder - what is that?

The simplest answer to that is a real cartoon/animation/entertainment network made for (mainly) adult people.

The name 'adult swim' comes from areas in the swimming pools where only adults were allowed to swim. The basic idea was to create a night channel for Cartoon Network airing when the main target group is usually asleep.

This year we will be having Adult Swim's 15th anniversary and i think it is a good occasion to show you some interesting stuff that aired during that period.

1. Robot Chicken - it's the one of AS's most popular shows featuring action figures and parodying EVERYTHING - from the pop culture to the real world events

2. Rick and Morty - currently the most popular show on Adult Swim telling a absolutely twisted and incredible adventures of Morty and his grandpa Rick.

3.  The Eric Andre Show - the most neurotic weird and incredibly distrubing show i have ever seen in my life - the "TALK SHOW" "hosted" by Eric Andre

WARNING - VERY DISTURBING

This is a very little of what the channel offers but i think it can show you quite well what kind of stuff you can expect from Adult Swim. Unfortunately it airs ony in North America, but luckily you can see all of the things they play for free on their website.

Questions:

1. Did you like what you just have seen? Yes or no and why?
2. Do you like watching cartoons?
3. What do you think about weird stuff on TV/Internet? Do you have any recommendations?

Comments

I don't like it at all. It is very stupid for me, definitely not funny. I like watching cartoons, or rather liked, since now I don't do it. When I was younger I used to watch them a lot, especially at Cartoon Network, Fox Kids. There is a lot of weird stuff in the internet, definitely YouTube is the most popular, biggest and widely available place for that. We also know Kwejk, Demotywatory and a lot of pages at the Facebook. I don't like this kind of stuff, so I don't have any recommendations. For me this are time consumers, that are very rarely funny and usually it does not make any sense to read or watch it.

I also don't like it. I used to read Kwejk and Demotywatory mainly during very boring lectures at our University as the only chance to survive, but at this moment I can't do it, when I am at work and I don't have such boring lessons. I don't find any entertainment in what you shown to us, I used to watch South Park and this probably might be considered as Adult Swim, but for me is much more interesting. I like watching cartoons but there was always only few that I liked. Weird stuff in the internet will always exist and I have neutral opinion about it. Some people like it and have some fun reading/watching it, so it is good for them, and those who dislike it just avoid it.

I just love rick and morty, its #2 on my all time favorites list. Sometime I do, I have to feel like it tho. I recommend you watch Archer its another great adult cartoon, spy themed and funny as hell :D
Unknown said…
Thanks for your opinion! Well of course it i s a matter of taste and some kind of vibe to feel when watching any stuff :)
Unknown said…
Well I myself am lover of weird stuff in many cases, Adult Swim I guess especially :) I love South Psrk as well and for example i really don't like Family Guy
Unknown said…
MY MAN! (Feelin Good) yeah Rick and Morty defenitely is a instant favourite for me as well :D i know Archer but never watched it longer than couple of minutes

Ahhahahaha, it i very funny. I have never heard about it and I’m disappointed. Thanks for topic of your presentation :)
I like your first example the most. I like watching cartoons,of course. Who from us don’t like it? Everyone like it, but not everyone talks about it :P
I don’t watch it everyday, but from time to time I watch.

I like watching cartoons. I have never had cable so I watched typical cartoon channels rarely but nowadays I watch (the typical) "South park", "The Simpsons" or "Family guy" and go to the cinema for almost every Disney and Pixar motion picture.

I enjoy weird sense of humors. I can definitely recommend "Salad Fingers" but it's truly very, very weird and a couple years old. And a more mainstream choice which I loved is a movie made by "South park" creators called "Team America: World Police". Just watch the trailer :D

I noticed that a lot of people mention websites like Kwejk. I truly urge you to use any other English equivalent or even reddit - awesome website with both serious and funny topics. The content is so much better.
I've seen some shows that air on Adult Swim and I liked some of them. It depends on a show though. Some of them are funny and some just plain boring.

I do like watching cartoons, although the only one I watch regularly is South Park. I absolutely love it.

When it comes to 'weird' stuff, it depends what it actually is. Things that are weird for the sake of it are kind of pointless. On top of that, many things aren't actually that weird for me and I am not able to give you any recommendations right now.
Unknown said…
Glad you liked it :)

Reddit is awesome i love it! South Park is one of my long-time favourites :) Yeah i see kwejk there a lot, but i would never think of it's connection with the stuff i posted
I had no idea that that kind of stuff is exist! I really like watching cartoons, so thank you so much for made me familiar with few more :) I really enjoy examples you gave us in this article so I definitely check their website.
Regarding to the question about weirs stuff in the internet or tv - for one of us one thing will be wierd, for someone else something different, so I think that concept "weird" it's very relative and based on our taste.
Unknown said…
Did you play "The Stick of truth"? It's amazing :D

I'm glad someone finally knows the site :) I don't really see the connection with the things you posted as well but I wanted to mention it. It's a shame people have to settle for those websites when there are so many better ones.

I remember watching some show on Adult Swim when I was in high school but I can't remember which one... But I do remember playing a simple game called Robot Unicorn Attack there :P I still remember background music. Anyway I'm familiar with the idea of Adult Swim, I'm not especially keen on the shows that you mentioned, but I do like cartoons and my favourites would be South Park, Futurama and Archer.

I have to confess that I like every parody that surpass borders of good taste. I have seen some shows from adult swim, and the one that is most strange, twisted, and evil is probably Mr Pickles, cartoon about evil dog that acts normally in front of his family. Drawing style and story is a bit disgusting, and whole show is really, really strange. I don't know if I would say that I liked it. I would rather say that I admire imagination of creators for coming up with such story. The cartoons I like? As I mentioned, every satire that refers to nowadays world, so I could recommend: South Park, Futurama, Family Guy.

This examples of adult swim's laughed me really hard. But in my opinion watching that kind of things is a waste of time. I can understand anime fanst etc. but this... Have you got any information about popularity of this adult swims? :D

I like the videos you've posted (except for the last one which doesn't show on my PC).

I really like cartoons - both the 'adult ones' and the ones for teenagers. From the first category, I looove Futurama and Salad Fingers mentioned by Paulina. I can also recommend Cyanide and Happiness shorts.

But there are also really cool cartoons made for teenagers; I'm addicted to "The Amazing World of Gumball" and "Adventure Time" - they're so weird and surreal, and the animation is really nice :) Some members of my family tell me it's immature to watch them, but to be honest, I don't see the difference between watching cartoons and TV series, both are made for entertainment.
Unknown said…
Ohhhh, I love creepy cartoons! I see Paulina has already mentioned Salad Fingers; it's my favourite! I also love Włatcy móch; I still use quotes from it in my day-to-day life :D Even things that air on regular children TV channels, like Courage, the Cowardly Dog, Cow and Chicken are disturbing, not to mention classics like The Adventure Time or Spongebob.
Geneally, cartoons are so full of hidden gems that we understand only as adults. I've recently read an article about disturbing moments in cartoons. You can find it here: [link]. I think, precisely because cartoons are so abstracted from reality, the creators are able to explore the weirdest/darkest themes in them. More than film, cartoons can have a very distinctive mood and aestheics. There are no rules of physics or drawing to obey. That's very freeing for the authors and the results are amazing!

I like Adult-Swim because from all weird things that come from internet, they can provide very good quality. It's first time I heard that Adult-Swim is aired after CN, I would love if this idea would have been brought to us. Of course it would be hard as it would require full translation, but everyone can dream. And speaking of disturbing and weird stuff I can mention Mr. Pickles. It's one of Adult-Swim shows that in my opinion is one of the weirdest things you can find in the internet and surely weirdest thing aired in public TV.

I like to watch some cartoons sometimes. Adult-Swim can provide some of the best series it is possible to get. Sometimes when you are tired and you have to get some relaxation those cartoons are best you can get in case you are looking for some laugh. The best thing about it is the fact, that you don't have to be a hardcore anime-fan and watch all the series in chronological order to understand what the hell is going on the screen - you just watch the series, get your dose of laugh and turn it off.

I watch cartoons from time to time, usually when I hear that something is cool and worth seeing. Recently I went through all the seasons of Steven Universe and Gravity Falls. I really enjoyed both of the series. They were a nice background entertainment when I was working on my boring commissions. I appreciate the animation as well – it is pretty.

Recently I had a chance to watch one of the Adult Swim animations as well. It's called The Venture Bros and it's hilarious. I can totally recommend it. :D
Unknown said…
YES! VENTURE BROS. RULE. I also heard Gravity Falls is awesome so i think i will watch it soon ;)
Unknown said…
Cartoon for adults are great. I like to watch some of them.
I prefere that one with a hidden message, when it's funny and prove some points it's a cool entertaiment.
Unknown said…
Thanks for your thoughts! Yeah, you can choose this way of watching for shows like Robot Chicken for sure. But Rick and Morty is too good for me not to follow every plot element :D
Unknown said…
Actually The Adventure time creator has very close contact with the creators of many AS shows and especially with Justin Roiland, who is the creator of Rick and Morty :) I had my episode with Wlatcy Moch as well haha
Unknown said…
The last one didn't work :( but maybe it is better that way, the show is VERY DISTURBING. and YES! i am a fan of C&H myself! :) both cartoons and comics :)
Unknown said…
Well yeah it is pretty popular in US, UK and the interenet as a whole. But it defenitely is some kind of niche aesthetic :P I watch anime as well and as a matter of fact you can watch VERY GOOD anime like Samurai Champloo on AS as well
Unknown said…
YES i like the imagination power presented in many shows from AS :)
Unknown said…
Archer is AS :)
Unknown said…
WORD! Thank you too!
Unknown said…
YUP PLAYED IT and yeah i agree with you about the other sites ;)
Unknown said…
I like the weird for the sake of weirdness! Sometimes very much!
Unknown said…
RICK AND MORTY THEN

Personally I do not like a fairy tales for adults, I think of them as low level. When I watch them I feel embarrassed. I am a person who prefers to watch documentaries about animals, travel or space. In the past, I watched cartoons for children but that was long time ago and I grew up from it.

To tell the truth this is the first time I heard about Adult Swim. I think I know what it is but it' not my kind of humor. I saw both the Simpsons and South Park and while I consider them both ok, Im not exactly a fan. However I really like some of the Cartoon Network cartoons, for example Adventure Time, The Amazing World of Gumball, Steven Universe or the older Powerpuff Girls.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
