Week 10 [30.05 - 05.06] Comedy music

Everyone has probably heard a comedy song at some point. There are some artists that focus their songwriting efforts on keeping  songs funny. Many of those songs are just aimed at getting the audience to laugh out loud, but some of them have a deeper meaning and try to spread a message. I would like to present to you a list that consists of my favorite (and some that I just find interesting) musical comedy acts.

Flight of the Conchords

This Grammy Award winning comedy-duo from Wellington, New Zealand consists of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement. In addition to having a BBC radio series and recording albums, they also had a TV-show on HBO which lasted 2 seasons. I personally prefer their live performances, but there are a few exceptions. Both gentlemen have also been successful on their own, most notably Bret McKenzie won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song “Man or Muppet”.

Their hits include: “Issues”, “Hiphopopotamus vs Rhymenoceros”, “The Bus Driver Song”, “You Don’t Have to Be a Prostitute” and “If You’re Into It”.

Tim Minchin

An Australian musical comedy genius, Tim Minchin has also had a fruitful career. He has released six studio albums, appeared on many comedy festivals and even sold-out shows during which he performed with an orchestra. His standard act consists of him playing the piano/singing and performing short stand-up routines in between the songs.

His lyrics often carry a message representing his opinion on mostly philosophical issues and are considered controversial by some. His main hits include: “Rock And Roll Nerd”, “Prejudice”, “If I Didn’t Have You”, “Inflatable You” and “Good Book”.

Lonely Island

I suspect most of you heard about them before. This musical comedy trio consists of: Akiva Schaffer, Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone. They were hired for Saturday Night Live in 2005 as writers. At SNL they created many successful sketches and produced viral music videos. Their discography consists of 3 albums and their songs often feature well known artists like Justin Timberlake or Akon.

Their hits include: “Motherlover”, “I’m On a Boat”, “Spring Break Anthem”.

Jon Lajoie

A Canadian comedian Jon Lajoie is currently releasing some more serious songs. But his previous material was mostly comedic.

His hits include: “Too Fast”, “High as F#%k”, “Radio Friendly Song”, “Chatroulette song”.

Ylvis

Ylvis is a comedy duo from Norway, which consists of Vegard and Bård Ylvisåker. Mostly known from their worldwide hit “The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?)” they host a talk-show on TVNorge (Norwegian TV channel). They haven’t replicated the success of “The Fox” yet, but still managed to release a couple more popular songs.

Their hits include: “Massachusetts”, “Jan Egeland”, “Stonehenge”, “a capella”.

I haven’t included any songs with explicit lyrics here (I mentioned some of them in the “hits” sections), but many of them are actually amazing. Feel free to check more if you’re not too sensitive about that kind of stuff.

What do you think about the above-mentioned artists? Do you have your favorite musical comedy act? Do you know any other good comedy songs I missed?

I remember many of them from comedy sketches of "Ani mru mru". I never heard about song you have mentioned in article. I am definitely not a fan of comedy music. It is neither funny nor interesting for me. Of course some lyrics may be funny. Anyone that can be considered as cool for me is Jimmy Fallon. In general I absolutely love his show, also lips synch battle. Also some actors try their's best to perform something like that, but I don't think they are sucessfull.
I heard about Garfunkel & Oates. If you like hilarious parodies, you'll love this female duo made of Katie Micucci and Riki Lindhome. Both of them are pretty crazy. They are likely to sing about blowjobs and pompous pregnant women than, say, troubled waters or dreams coming true. There is also Rhett and Link. Like Julian Smith, Rhett and Link they don't always do musical comedy. But they do rock at it. I have seen them for the first time at youtube, where they have multiple accounts. As of May 2016 the most watched videos on the Rhett & Link channel are "Epic Rap Battle: Nerd vs. Geek" with over 30 million views.
IMO a good comedy song has to be a good song in the first place and than it usually has a varying degree of comedy in it.

As for Jimmy Fallon, some bits of his show are funny, but I don't really like how he always laughs out loud at anything anyone says in his interviews. Speaking for myself, when it comes to late night shows there's nothing better than the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson(it unfortunately finished in 2014, now James Corden hosts it). Craig was an amazing host in that he didn't need any guests really to make the show funny.
I've heard about Garfunkel & Oates as well as Rhett and Link. G&O have got some really good original songs. I haven't found Rhett and Link's songs too interesting, but they do have some high quality content for sure. And you've reminded me of Epic Rap Battles of History which I probably should include in the post.

I think that SNM students may find the animation for Tim Minchin's 'Storm' interesting:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhGuXCuDb1U

I really like those types of songs, although it's not something I'd listen to on daily basis because of the lyrics which are really important it that kind of music.

Tim Minchin is sure one of my favourites in that field, although I've also listened to Garfunkel & Oates mentioned by Cezary or Lonely Island and Ylvis mentioned in your presentation ('Stonehenge' is great!)

It's not really something I listen to on daily basis so I don't really know what to say about the subject.

I'm a fan of Star Wars and the thought of comedic songs immediately pulled me Yankovic and his song "The Saga Begins" -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEcjgJSqSRU !
I remember when my colleagues are still singing it :)
I don't know the songs you mentioned in presentation but I think it's great type of music and good way to make a parody. Polish cabarets are doing a lot of cool gags based on the songs, for example Łowcy.B :)
I love Tim, I think he's still working on music and lyrics for musical theatre adaptation of Groundhog Day as of now. A weird idea for a musical, but I'm pretty sure he'll do well with his part in creating it.
That's fine. Have you heard any comedy songs you liked? Maybe by Polish artists?

Weird Al Yankovic is obviously a legend when it comes to musical comedy :) In the post I listed artists that focus more on original songs than him, but still he is amazing and most possibly was an inspiration for many of the artists I mentioned. Truly, the king of parodies.

Awesome animation <3!

I've only heard Tim Minchin's Good Book before and loved it. Those kinds of songs are great because they play with conventions and don't give a damn about social norms. It's very refreshing cause they're so funny but you can actally easily see how much thought and effort goes into those songs & their lyrics.

There're also the completely abstract, unexplainable songs, like Let's Do The Fork In The Garbage Disposal, which... I don't even know. It kinda reminds me of the fox song. Though it's stuck in my head ever since I heard it xD...

I absolutely love music written for Bad Lip Reading's Star Wars parodies. It's so wonderfully hilarious and catchy! So far they have produced two songs Bushes of Love and Not The Future and they are awesome.

To be honest I prefer polish comedy songs. I was not really the fan of them until some time, but now I find them a nice way of combining music with comedy.
I think that comedy songs can be good, but there is one artist out of one thousands which is making funny comedy songs, in my opinion of course. But I never find that one :P I'm pretty sure that I'll check artists you mentioned in the article, but maybe you know more? I really like to laugh!

I truly hate those comedy songs, especially what does the fox say. I rage every time I hear it so its not fun for me :D Also I really dislike polish cabarets. What I do find funny are rap remixes, they contain foul language so I won't post them here.

I really like some of those comedy bands, especially Lonely Island, and their pieces created in cooperation with celebrities like Natalie Portman, Hugh Jackman, Akon, because of their funny lyrics. I also listened to some other bands, but Lonely Island is quite my favourite.

Many thanks to you for the great article. I have known new thing. It seems to be similar to our polish cabaret songs.
For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUhOM7wyQpY Do you know it? Good old polish cabaret. Other good example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQNVB1ghR9c
It is two of my favorite. From your examples I know only one- Ylwis and their “What does the fox say” xD It was probably a hit last holiday. When I saw it first time I was really amused. Clip which they created to this song is also really comedy. Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding!

Great article, I love comedy music, especially the one that makes fun concerning numerous cliches in the style of the music. For instance I like the US band named Steel Panther, the guys are hilarious comedians and awesome musicians, if in love with glam-metal and at the same time you are understanding all the nonsense of their look and lyrics then this band is for you - a lof of dirty jokes, words and awesome tunes.

Great article I enjoyed it a lot, some of the artists I already knew and some of them I had just found about, all of them are great in their own way, all of them are worth mentioning but I think you skipped some important one also, this article made me laugh a lot. Join Lajoie and Lonely Island is worth knowing, if you’re having a bad day just look through their youtube channels to make your day better it’s worth it. You’ve missed this one: CollegeHumor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=5&v=rvBhFMgcZL0
And: Saturday Night Live

And much more..

What a sentimental journey for me : ) I used to listen to lot of comedy songs including some mentioned by you. In general there is tons of comediants trying to create this kind of 'art'but the tricky part is that it requires both music skills and comedian soul. Songs youve listed are awesome and thanks to this post I'm gonna refresh my memories a look for much more :) Thank you!

Who hasn't heard of "What does the fox say?"... It was funny in the beginning but after some time I got really tired of this song :) I like some of Tim Minchin's skits but I don't recall ever hearing his song before, well anyway he's funny :P Jon Lajoie on the other hand will be haunting me till the rest of my days because back in high school I had this guy in class who would play his songs out loud whenever the teacher left our classroom. Two songs in particular... Show me your genitals part 1 and 2 so since then I absolutely can't stand him.
Thanks for the songs :) I really enjoyed them!
I don't think I've ever heard a polish comedy song I liked, but maybe I haven't been looking in the right places. Any suggestions?
I do agree with you that most of musical comedy artists aren't really that funny, but it obviously also depends on your own sense of humour. There are many other artists I didn't mention in the article, some of which have already been mentioned in the comments like: Weird Al Yankovic, Garfunkel & Oates or Tenacious D. There are also creators that don't focus on making comedy songs, but do them sort of along the way of doing sth else, for example Monty Python. And last but not least there are many shows (mainly animated) that have got some amazing songs like those from South Park or The Simpsons.

I also don't really like Polish cabarets, but everyone likes sth else.
Their cooperations with Akon and Justin Timberlake were probably the most fruitful :D
I knew the second song you gave as example, wasn't familiar with the first one. They're nice, kind of similar to musical theatre songs.
I heard about them, but they haven't cought my attention yet. I guess in the same vein is Gloryhammer, a band that plays power metal making fun of the genre at the same time. They're quite ridiculous.
I do not know the examples given by you. Maybe I am a "mushroom" I have a list of your favorite YouTube. The real "Mushroom" haha .. Although I did not hear - I really like it. Light note of humor be useful for every day. Thank you for opening a new drawer in my brain;) The most I liked - Jack Sparrow (feat. Michael Bolton).
I didn't list everyone that came to my mind. Only my favorites or artists that in my opinion deserve recognition for whatever reason. There are many more and thank you for the links :)
I'm glad you rediscovered some of those songs here :)
I actually enjoyed every second of "The Fox" being popular, it probably was overplayed a bit, but it doesn't happen very often that a song like that is being played at parties all over the world.

In my opinion the main music goal is to be pleasent to hear for listener :P To make him either happy, or super sad, to bring emotions or just to be a background for everyday life. I am not quite into comedy music, because I guess I am not the right target :D The only band I know from mentioned above is Lonely Island - and yes, their songs are quite funny, but it's nice to hear once or twice :D It's not something I would set on repeat, or listen as a background music for my everyday activity :P

I like the idea that the song lyrics say something more - it's something different, because most of the lyrics nowadays are just super shallow and stupid. I only need it to be as good from musical point of view as the rest :P But it's my personal opinion, I understand if it might be cool songs for other people to listen to it many many times and have fun :D

What do you think about the above-mentioned artists?

Hmmm it was ok for me, but some oth these were to cheesy for me :D haha

Do you have your favorite musical comedy act? Do you know any other good comedy songs I missed?

Oh yeah! Tenacious D baby! They are the MASTERS of comedy music and they do it really well!! Weird Al Yankovic was great in the 90's. I also like Bart Baker with his pop songs parodies and my favourite Shrimp Coat song :D

Comedic music is not my coup of tea, but there's one artist I know (I was somewhat forced into listening by proximity) and I must say some of his songs are both funny and smart. Tom Lehrer was active as a songwriter, composer and singer mostly in the 50s and 60s. He is a math professor who used to provide social and political commentary with his satirical songs. He ended his musical career in 1971. As the legend says he stopped after Henry Kissinger was awarded a Nobel Prize. Lehrer commented that awarding the prize to Kissinger made political satire obsolete. Here are some of his songs:

After quitting singing he returned to teaching match. Right now he's 88 years old.
The only artist that I haven't heard of is the first one. I personally like the last three and find them funny and catchy. As someone above said they are just good songs that happened to have a funny lyrics in them. I don't have a favourite musical comedy act mainly because I don't like most of them ;). I think that Anders Nilsen - Salsa Tequila is quite a good song and made in a way that most people don't notice that the lyrics are just spanish sounding words that make no sense :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJWIJs27gyU
I encourage You to read the lyrics :)
I'm a huge fan of The Lonely Island. I know all of theirs songs and they are really great! I've heard about Ylvis and theirs "What does the fox say?' song. I think it is very funny and entertaining what they do. I haven't heard about others groups but for sure I will listen to them. I really enjoy comedies in all forms. Music is great way to express comedy.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form.
