Week 5 [18.04 - 24.04] - VIRTUAL REALITY

VIRTUAL REALITY

What do you think of when you hear the words virtual reality (VR)? Have you seen The Sight at Vimeo? (https://vimeo.com/46304267)

The definition of virtual reality comes from both ‘virtual’ and ‘reality’ We perceive the world through our senses. In school we all learned that we have five senses: taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing. You would be presented with a version of reality that isn’t really there, but from your perspective it would be perceived as real.

Today virtual reality is usually implemented using computer technology. There are a range of systems that are used for this purpose, such as headsets, omni-directional treadmills and special gloves. These are used to actually stimulate our senses together in order to create the illusion of reality.

(source: http://redframe-game.com/wp/uploads/2014/01/RedFrameVr.jpg)

Reading Wikipedia, we can observe that first tries in VR were made even before 1950, nowadays we have Oculus or a cheap cartoon Google version.

(source: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ad/Google-Cardboard.jpg)

Some of us already tried games in VR and at this point it seems to be the future of game industry. Even YouTube introduced VR perspective in majority of videos so everyone can put their phone into Google Cardboard standard and try it out.

VR redefines the idea of communication, expanding it from people you know in real life to anyone connected to the internet. This means that relationships will begin to be formed more based on interests than general location. Many different fields can use VR to train people in a way that would usually put them at risk. This is used most notably in the fields of medicine, law enforcement, architecture and aviation. Those who are not able to fully experience reality, such as disabled people, could explore the Virtual World and still experience a full life. VR also makes tourism and visiting sites more easy by giving a detailed view of the original place, e.g. Virtual tour. We already can experience such tours in multiple museums. This provides a chance to experience things that are impossible in real life as if you were actually there e.g. fighting zombies in a game.

But on the other hand, don’t you think that it makes our life a little bit fake?

Those who do not have access or cannot afford this technology will be left out. This could deepen digital divide. Using this technology would make communication more susceptible to deception. Due to the fast development of Virtual Reality and online worlds, there is a lack of laws regarding these worlds. Users can say and do things in these worlds that are illegal in reality. Also, users may be less inhibited than in real life due to a sense of anonymity and may act in a way that is socially unacceptable. Many people may become addicted to living in these virtual worlds, and as a result, forget or neglect their responsibilities in real life. Moreover, some people have been known to have motion sickness due to the VR headset usage.

Questions

  1. What is your opinion about virtual reality?
  2. Have you ever tried Oculus or a similar device? What was your experience?
  3. How do you perceive the future world with such technology?

I recently had a chance to try the new versions of both Oculus and HTC Vive. I think it's the new step in the entertainment industry and after I tried a couple of games I think it's an indescribable devise and the experience is really amazing and immersive. In my opinion hand controllers are the "game changers" and for me HTC Vive wins, at least for now.

[LINK], is that the film you mention at the beginning of your presentation? If it is, I've seen it before and it's quite amazing (Really well done too! Generally, I heartily recommend watching short films these days; they explore many aspects of new technologies and their influence on people's lives and are short enough to accomodate our attention span ;)). The creators did a great job with the visuals, plot events aside. I actually had to rewatch the short a few times to even be able to focus on what was happening, because I was getting distracted by all the information/apps/games popping up constantly. And isn't it quite telling?

What I wanted to discuss is rather not what the VR technology can do to us, but why we want it in the first place. Awesomeness aside, I think it's like with any other artificially-created reality: we need control. Games/apps etc let us exist in a controlled environment. If we do specific things in a correct order, we'll get such and such results. It's simple, much simpler than life. We have goals and quests, while in real life we might feel absolutely aimless and depressed. If we complete them, that's it; we get the XP points and the feeling of achievement. We may even level up. In real life? Not so much. New problems appear and wins can sometimes be loses.
I don't want to presume that the future will look like in the short film, but I think it's quite possible. Just how many people experience terrible anxieties and depression because the 'real' reality is so overwhelming. VR lets us escape that for a little (or not so little...) while and it's great but, as always, we need balance and we need to examine why we want to escape in the first place.
That's great that you had chance to try it by yourself. It is hard to explain how it looks like to someone who never had that chance. I think that usage in game is just a small part where it can be used. The other sector is education or training employees by using training program not real machines.
Yes, this is the film I mentioned at the beginning of my presentation. I also believe that is shows 'future reality' quite vivid and real. Well my interpretation was that I will not have to think anymore because I will be told about all facts and I will live little bit like a robot without brain.

Your point of view is very interesting and question you meant is very important. The control in this world is crucial to everyone, we don't want to spend so much time in school or in life learning things for hours where we can be led by instructions how to do something. And what is interesting almost everyone have similar feelings about presented future, all of us are pretty scared that we will not have to use our brains and that we can be manipulated very easily.

I think it's great technology which allows for some privacy for example when you want to watch a movie in bus or train and then no one can look in your laptop monitor or you don't disturb anyone.
It's also a great breakthrough in the world of gaming. You can get a feel for the game more than an ordinary computer screen and in combination with other devices for example kinect, VR provides even more opportunities for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTtfAQEeAJI I think it looks a little bit strange :P
In my opinion this movie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aThCr0PsyuA) show us the immediate future of VR and how we could use VR.
It is hard to image someone in oculus in train ^^ Your example looks like fancy gym training. Holograms might be very useful especially for designers, architects and so on. I am just wondering how safe it will be for people who drive a car or bicycle or just walk on street when they should focus on their way instead of looking on holograms. The only thing I don't like in such movies is that it shows the work of graphic designers and such features doesn't work yet.

Of course I had chance to try some features of virtual reality by myself during classes of human-computer interaction at bachelor studies. It is so weird to be suddenly in completely different world. Some time ago I was interested how it works and I planned to work a little bit to create samples of my work, unfortunately I am not a graphic designer and in my opinion this is the most important skill in this business. I can’t wait for future development of both hardware and software in virtual reality area, it looks like future is bright for many sub disciplines that can gain a lot on it.

I highly recommend to try it by yourself. Maybe people from our university should open extra classes to learn how to do it. This might be helpful in future work.
Yes you are right that graphics skills are crucial in virtual reality, it is important to do great work in three dimensional space. Thankfully I also tried it and it was great, I know that I tried first generation hardware but anyway it made impression on me. Having classes about it at university would be great since it seems to be potential working position.

I have seen it and I have tried it. I supposed it will be more great than it is in real. Unfortunatelly I’m disappointed.I think that I don’t like it because I think it is one of gadgets. I don’t like gadgets excessively.
When I was trying I have feel that it is incomplete. My experience was incomplete. I have missed a feeling high emotion.
I think that it may have a few applications despite my bad feeling it.
That's great that you tried it. I am sorry that you are disappointed, maybe you tried first generation of it? Now there is many more than just Oculus, and they are much better than at the beginning. Of course there is still a lot of work to be made. But I don't see it just like a gadget. As I mentioned there is unlimited possibility of usage.

I agree that if VR begins to influence some peoples' lives in a negative way, f ex. by neglecting their real lives, it may become an enormous disadvantage of technology development. On the other hand, it brings plenty of advantages regarding entertainment, which is positive in the sense of people enjoying it and having more fun with it.
I personally have tried the cheap cartoon Google version which requires only our phone and the cartoon box, I must say even though it is a cheap version, it is also very realistic and also surprisingly funny. But I agree that we should wait until Google publish the famous glasses and begin to sell it worldwide, so we can get it cheaper after a while. :)

I'm generally writing about technology. In my opinion technology makes worse relationships. Of course it also makes better quality of life.
Therefore, I don't have a good relation to virtual reality. I haven't used this type of devices yet.

I have never the possibility of using virtual reality oculus but if I could I would like to try. According to me it is prospective technology which has a chance to develop and perhaps it will be expanded in the future of the olfactory and tactile incentives where we will be able to move in a completely different world. The virtual reality technology is useful for intellectual development through the game using VR simulators. Even medicine and aviation exploit virtual reality for air simulators or simulators for training young surgeons. For me horrifying is only a fact that this technology has the negative effects induced by stimulating visual 3D pulses. After some time their effect is noted in various reactions of body e.g. epilepsy, in particular when visual sensations affects to labyrinth.
I am also concerned how bad it can influence people. Some time ago it was discussion in tv news how games in general have bad influence on children, and such games might be even more dangerous. I also have cheap version and it is cool, just the fact that I have to hold it all the time is annoying ^^
You should definitely try. Of course we are not so up to date and it is hard to say exactly on which level this technology is developed. There is for sure a lot that we don't know about that.
I am not sure how people will feel about that. There were google glasses and augmented reality didn't work so well. During some events I have seen many start-ups both those who produce hardware and software of VR. I guess at least it should be used in medicine, technology or aviation.
I do not agree with statement that it could be harmful. Of course it is possible that some people will overuse it, but same rule applies to "normal" computers. If you have no moderation in using any device you could get addicted and dependant to it.
I have never tried such device, but it must be amazing experience. I would love to play some FPS games, like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmaxmnPzMWE
Imagine playing horror games using VR, it must be amazing. It is definitely future of gaming, because it brings computer experience to whole new level. You do not use keyboard anymore, you interact with game/system with your body, you have 360 degree sight. When avialable for average user it will surely have huge impact on our lives.
It can for sure provide incredible emotions and feelings. I would not only focus on games, but imagine movies, some time ago experiencing 3D movies was something cool, but watching movies in VR would be amazing.

1. What is your opinion about virtual reality?
I agree that it will be the next step in making games more immersive. I've seen a demo where u can watch movies in "virtual cinema" which is something I really would like to try out.

2. Have you ever tried Oculus or a similar device? What was your experience?

No I did not, but i really look forward to trying it out.

3. How do you perceive the future world with such technology?

I think it will make work easier - imagine a pilot flying a drone with VR googles, its something straight out of the Sci-fi movie.

Virtual reality has an amazing potential and I'm looking forward to seeing how it evolves, especially in the fields like surgery (or medicine in general), navigation and allowing disabled people to fully experience the world like others. Games and entertainment interest me to less extent, but there is no doubt this is where VR will shine. The ability to create worlds and scenarios impossible in real life and allowing people to experience that will be something impressive.

I had a chance to try Google Cardboard. It was nothing mind-blowing, but still a very cool experience.
I've tried VR and my experience with it was good. It will certainly find its uses in many industries.

When it comes to day-to-day use, I don't think it will replace everything we know. It will probably be a bigger addition than 3D was, because it is far more immersive. But I can't really see the appeal of VRs use in movies for example and I'm pretty sure that will be the case for your average movie audience.

It will definitely be more and more present in videogames, but again it probably won't become a general way to experience games. While it can serve its purpose in games with first person perspective, it doesn't really work in many game genres that involve clearly visible user interface or a different graphical perspective (strategy games, some RPGs, TPP action games and so on).

All in all, it is an amazing piece of technology that gives many opportunities, but I don't think it will be ever in general use (as are normal TVs and 2D monitors right now).
Don't focus only on games it is useful in many other areas of life. Your example is very interesting. I can imagine some training for plane pilots in VR.
Of course it is hard to convince people to buy special equipment, that was rather expensive some time ago, and it is still something fresh and a lot of people have no clue that something like that even exists.
This is much better than 3D. Maybe there will be movies in cinema, this will change everything. Cinemas will not require huge spaces, everyone can watch different movie at the same time. Maybe there should be combined VR with 7D movies.

I think VR has a great potential and in the next 10 years we’ll have sufficiently powerful equipment to encounter almost real life experience. I’ve already tried Oculus Rift and unfortunately it’s not for me. I mean, the experience in a rollercoaster game was awesome, but due to my motion sickness I’m not able to wear those glasses for a long time. My engineer’s project was based on Oculus Rift and remote controlled vehicle with two mobile phones attached to it. The main goal was to see the world from the vehicle’s perspective. Even if it was just a prototype It was a great fun to play around with it. I’m sure we’ll be able to sightsee faraway places thanks to the similar devices in the future.

And the video you posted pertains to Augmented Reality rather than Virtual Reality.

I love virtual reality devices, But in the same time they scaring me. I mean the idea that You disconnected from the world around you 100% it's sound cool but for some amount of time.
I am really wondering what is the side effects on human brain for using such a devices for long time.

recently Microsoft came with their own virtual realty device HoloLens, The idea it seem not bad, the different they got on HoloLens that You can see around you as normal and in the same time you interact with some applications that appear in front of your eyes.

I had the Carton box from google and i used with my phone and it was really great experience.
Yeah, as I've said it's far more immersive. But the huge spaces thing and everyone watching the same movie at the same time is in my opinion an integral part of "the cinema experience" for your average movie audience. VR is just too distracting for some people that want to simply sit back and enjoy the movie with friends. Immersion isn't the most important aspect of movies for many people, that's a bit different with videogames.

Few days ago I tried HTC Vive and it was amazing! Few years ago I have tried oculus and rollercoster and it was sick, didn't enjoy it at all, but I had some recently mentioned by you virtual tours but I also played few games on HTC and for example fruit ninja was very nice :) Have you ever tried it?
I have never chance to try different Oculus or similar device. I think it's very interesting thing but in my opionion - its only toy for me. Maybe it's a new experience for watching our world, but it's not a thing which is interested for me. I would like to try to know how it's looks like. It's shame that I couldn't check it (for example Oculus) at school.

VR is something really mysterious for me, first of all i'm not in the swim of technological newness. What is more future with VR around us sounds for me like eerie story.. unfortunately story which I'd rather avoid. Already a lot of us live more in virtual world than in real one using social media as a main way to connect with other people. Creating someone completely different from real version of us is biger and biger problem especially between young often mixed up people. If VR could be only harmless entertainment I would be really happy of it.

I think VR is a 'dream' people have from a long, long time. I know that several sci-fi movies and books used that motive. I wonder when the technology will be developed enough (and affordable enough!) for more people to have a VR device.

Of course, I can see some dangers in the technology. In one of the books I've read (I seriously can't remember its name right now), kids were so occupied with VR that they didn't want to live a normal life (in fact, many kids are already addicted to PC games...). Also, the movie 'Demolition Man' comes to my mind - the main character traveled to year 2033, where people didn't want to get close to each other because they believed it's gross and unhealthy, so they used VR whenever they wanted to make out. I don't think such a thing would happen in our world, but who knows... :)

I had a chance to try both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive because my boyfriend borrowed both headsets from his work. Personally I can't say I absolutely love it. Sure it's a great new technology but as it is now there's now way that it could stand in for reality. Maybe it's just me (and I think it is just me) but I have a problem with suspension of disbelief - I saw my friends getting completely immersed in the games they were playing: jumping, rolling around, dodging bullets but somehow it was not all that exciting for me. It was fun, sure but it never felt like something real.

As for it's applications and fear of people becoming disconnected from reality - some of them already are pretty disconnected. It's no different from people addicted to multiplayer games like MMOs or second life. Escapism existed even before we had computers. I believe the positive applications of VR like tourism or educational simulations outweighs the negative ones.
Last week I heard Paulina tell all about her recent HTC Vive experience. I am not into this kind of stuff, but she made me genuinely interested in trying it. I think that VR may bring a whole new range of possibilities for the disabled to experience the world more deeply, even if jst virtually. It may also bring movies to a whole new level - imagine not only watching a movie, but also being a part of it!

Like I said in the article about augmented reality, it'll still take some time have really useful device and software. Unfortunately this technology is more complex than AR so it make take even more time.
Of course if you have problems like that you can't use it at least in such games. That's so great that You actually tried to do something like that, even if it was just a prototype. For me both this term are related to each other.
But when you are playing computer games in your room, with sound and everything isn't the same? You are also kind of disconnected from real world, I know that it is not exactly the same, but it is similar. HoloLens refers to Augmented Reality but as I mentioned before for me those terms are related to each other. I am waiting to try them.
Of course it also depends on the game or program you use. I tried only playing a game with shooting, but I was scared then I saw something unexpected.
I tried them at school, maybe you didn't have human-computer interaction classes?
Of course not everyone feel comfortable with such devices. I am staying positive about new technologies and I can imagine how movies from such perspective have to be wonderful.
All entertainment is bringing us to place far away from reality, and I guess that's why we like it. Devices are cheaper and cheaper, but if you as people on the street have they ever heard about that I have doubts if they say yes.
Obviously You have to be aware that it is just a game, and You should't treat it as your real life. Overusing it may change your personality, but the same is with games in general.
We are waiting for development of it, but it looks promising.

Virtual reality is a good thing for sure, but it still need a lots of time, to be really usefull and easy to use. First of all, to make full use of a device like occulus rift, u need to buy headset + motion sensor (still better than walking platform like "Virtuix Omni). When the development of VR will make one device like headset for example, which will take us to Virtual reality, it's gonna be turn that will make VR really famous. Thanks to my friend, I had a chance to try out Occulus rift and it was really awesome experience. The only defect of wearing it, was that i didn't feel really comfortable. After a few minutes sadly i had to puke :( Im really looking forward for a new solutions, but after watching this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBXpCFKj91U&oref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DCBXpCFKj91U&has_verified=1 , Im asking myself "Is it a good way of having sex?" Regards studends.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.

Week 4 [06-12.11.2017] This is what happens when you reply to spam email.

James Veitch is a British comedian. In today’s Ted Talk James with characteristic for himself a sense of humor shows how he deals with spam emails and why responding to junk messages may be sometimes dangerous. Questions: What do you think about James’s  way of dealing with spam? Why are junk messages legal, even though it sometimes may be a fraud? Dou you have a problem with spam? How do you deal with with it?
