Week 8 (11.05-17.05) Paintball – short history

What is paintball ? Perhaps most of you know it from company outings. But did you know that it is a very rapidly growing sport all around the world ? Let me introduce it to you a bit.

The first paintball equipment appeared in the 50s in the US. Originally it was used to mark livestock by cowboys and by foresters to mark trees. The current form of paintball comes from the 80s. Three friends Bob Gurnsey, Hayes Noel and Charles Gaines came up with idea of organizing a game using markers. Thanks to the media other people heard about this game and ,like these three friends, started to paint each other. Since this moment the world of paintball has begun to grow around the world. The basic equipment for the game is pneumatic paintball gun – a marker, a protective mask and balls with paint based on edible gelatin.

Nowadays this play is becoming a fully professional sport, worth multi-million dollars. There are two kinds of paintball due to the venue. Sport paintball played on a designated area with inflatable fabric "bunkers" called balloons. Speedball games are played on the fields with predetermined dimensions and the players hide behind balloons in different shapes and sizes. The number of players in one team depends on the league in which the match is played, the most common format is 5 vs. 5 or 7 vs. 7. The main Polish league is PLP (Polish Paintball League), and in Europe – EPBF (European Paintball Federation). Here you can watch a short film from one of the PLP events in 2014:

The second kind of paintball is ‘woodsball’. The name comes from the area where it is played. In this type of paintball, games often simulate military operations, players are dressed in uniforms, using masks. Markers are different, often they imitate real weapons. Woodsball games often take the form of MilSim that last a minimum of 24 hours and are played over an area of several kilometers. In Poland one of the most famous paintball maneuvers are events organized by  Pretorians called Saltus. They combine a paintball play with a survival skill play. Below is another short film from one edition of Saltus, you can notice differences in players’ equipment and in techniques used.
(I’m sorry for the language and curses)

I would recommend playing it, emotions during the game are not to compare with anything else.

I have never tried paintball. When I was in high school we took few classes at a shooting range. I was very bad at shooting and I did not like it. I guess that paintball would not be the greatest pleasure for me. Nevertheless, it could serve as a very useful training in case of a war.
Marcin Lyzwa said…
I think most of paintball players don't think about real war during trainings nor games. On of my team-mate is a soldier and he says that paintball is incomparable to real military operations. Of course paintball might by useful as a part of training, but I think soldiers have better equipment for trainings. I think yours classes at shooting range were more useful than my years with paintball.

I'm not into group sports and shooting at all so that's not quite a topic for me but I didn't know the history of paintball and how it started so that's always a new thing to know. I've shot real guns a few times (at a shooting range or at friends' yard) but it never found it to be that fun. From what I've heard paint balls can cause painful bruises and I wouldn't like to get "hurt" or hurt someone else, even for fun.

Anyway your article made me remember a fun video of a bachelor party, where the groom get's to be Rambo and they use paintball guns. It's quite long but I think it's pretty cool. Check it out if you are interested.

I used to play paintball every holidays when I was a teenager. I used to go for a paintball camps every single year, I totally loved it. Unfortunately now I've got no opportunity to do it non-stop for 2 weeks annualy but I still play it few times per year. I think it's a great idea to collect friends and play it instead of the usual party - the integration during such undertaking is much bigger that when it comes to other games. The adrenaline is so addictive! I tried to encourage my girlfriend to play it but she gave up after few bruises.
Dominika Suszek said…
Probably you are right, I know nothing about paintball :)

I love paintball !!! I heard that in our school there was a group which organized paintaball. I tried it for the first time when I was at integration camp. When you are protective gear you don’t have to worry that you will get hurt and feel any pain when you get hit. I had only once been to a badly prepared paintball that everyone had been too afraid to shoot anybody because it hurt a lot.

I have never played paintball. Probably I will try this game. It looks interesting and can be good way to spend free time with friends. Paintball is a kind of sport. We should always move so it will be good for our condition. There is one thing that makes me afraid of paintball. I have heard that when the ball hit me it really hurt and sometimes people who did it have a lot of bruises.

I’ve played paintball two times so far. It was always a great fun for me. It’s a way better than target shooting which I enjoy. Paintball is a great sport because it teaches both how to shoot and be tactical at the same time.

I was on a paintball camp once in Borne Sulinowo. I find paintball a great way to have fun with friends, but I wouldn't want to do it often too, because there's too much walking around - I prefer playing first person shooting computer games, such as Counter Strike GO :)
I have never try paintball in my life, but one day I surely want to try. For me it seems to be safer version of shooting game. The very important thing is good and safe equipment. Hit your opponent, during which the ball breaks away, leaving a colorful trail (known by the players repayment) on the body, the mask or marker player makes his elimination from the game. Even in a protective suit can be acquired multiple bruises.

Paintball is a sport that is growing rapidly, also in Poland. For a large part of participants is only attractive form of recreation, there are also aficionados who spend a large expense and time to perfect your skills in this area.

I've even heard about paintball team in our school, but unfortunately it seems it was only gossips. Yes, with good quality gear you don't have to worry about pain and bruises. Because of adrenaline it sometimes happens you don't even feel any hit.
Marcin Lyzwa said…
I would sign up to PJ paintball team if it existed
Marcin Lyzwa said…
As I said in previous comment, the level of paint depends on many factors. The most important is distance between you and your opponent, second is your protective gear and a part of body which ball hits. Generally adrenaline and fun kill the pain caused by hit. Personally I can tell you that you can get used to this 'pain', and after many hits you don't feel another one.
Marcin Lyzwa said…
Ohh! I've been in Borne Sulinowo twice on 36h game. As I remember forests there are very difficult to play. Walking around is a part of a game!
CS GO is quite good, but I still prefer older version, 1.6. :)

Thanks for the article! I have never played paintball but I would like to do that in the nearest future. I've tried laser tag and it was really awesome, so I believe that it will be the same with paintball. Playing in the forest sounds great! And the pain... well, sometimes we have to be tough, don't we? :D

Paintball sounds like a ton of fun. I tried it once and it was a great experience. It was a game in a small closer area in a forest, so something in between the two categories that you described. I loved the adrenaline rush that it gave me though I had a bit of a struggle with the equipment - I couldn't see clearly because my glasses were getting all foggy underneath the protective mask :p
Like Marta, I also tried playing laser tag and this too was exciting.
Next Monday I have a company event and guess what we'll be doing? Do you have any tips and tricks for a newbie like me? :D
Unknown said…
I have similar opinion as Agata. I think we are just too girly for this brutal sport :D But it seems very interesting, I hope one day I will overcome my fear of bruises and I will try it :)) But maybe at first I would try lasertag? It seems to be similar (I don't know if it is also such a popular sport as paintball - I don't think so :D ) but definitely not that painful :D Have you ever tried lasertag?
I've never played paintball - the only memory I have regarding this sport is my dad coming home after a match, with bruises all over his body :) I would like to try it, though - I don't agree sports can be 'girly' or 'manly' like Natalia said ;) I really like anything that resembles RPG in real life, like laser tag, already mentioned by several people.
Marcin Lyzwa said…
Yup, I do - run fast, shoot accurately, be one step ahead of opponent :)
I don't have any tips for fog in the mask, it is always a big problem. I used to use a special protective fluid for swimmers. But I have my own mask :)
Marcin Lyzwa said…
Yes, I did. I played lasertag once. We can say it is something similar to paintball, but it is played on smaller area. in my case the level of adrenaline was definitely lower because there is no fear of pain. Lasertag also could be a great fun with friends.
Marcin Lyzwa said…
I agree with you about 'girly' or 'manly' sport.
Have you dad played paintball only once or more in some paintball team ?
Unknown said…
I've played paintball few times, I've enjoyed it but I have to admit that I've forgotten about that kind of spending time so it probably wasn't the greatest experience in my life. It's kind of work team and I rather work alone. Besides that I'm not a huge fan of that kind of sport I'd like to do it again soon, so thanks for the incentive to finally gang together to play some paintball!

What about 1.3 ? :)
Unknown said…
I've never played paintball, but I'd like to try it some day. I'm afraid I'm not the best team player around, but the whole thing sounds really cool for me. I practice at a shooting range so I think I would like paintball too, even though it's more dynamic than just shooting still targets.

Anyway, thanks for the article, especially the part about the origin of this sport. I find it a bit funny for some reason. :)
rf. said…
If you don't take your mask too often it won't get foggy. Don't get too worked up in the beginning - sometimes patience is the key! If you can find a good spot where you're not easily found you can wait for a good opportunity to take an aimed shot. Many players like rushing or walking along the field edges - so they can attack from behind. It's relatively easy to find yourself a hidden spot where they can simply walk past you and then take them down unawares.

I've played several times now, enjoyed all of em. Actually most of the events I've had ended up with bonfire so usually it's a whole day event. From the movies you posted I really liked the way the guys shot in the first video - alternating with two fingers on the trigger. I've played speedball and it's really amazing, didn't really anticipated that I'd enjoy it so much after only playing woodsball. Now when I get the opportunity I try to play on such a field where you can do both speedball and woodsball. It's more exciting that way!
Marcin Lyzwa said…
I have some memories about 1.3 version but they are not clear. If I'm not mistaken it was something around 2002 when I started to take informatic additional classes and of course CS was a part of this classes.
Marcin Lyzwa said…
This way players pull the trigger allow them to shoot very fast without any electronic modification. I don't know present regulations but there used to be limitation for number of balls shoot per second. Paintball markers and loaders (paintball magazine) allows to shoot 30 balls per second or even more.
Marcin Lyzwa said…
Your suggestions might be helpful, but it requires mental toughness and good planning. Sometimes masks used in commercial games are slightly worn and scratched and then even your technique may not help.
Michal Kulesza said…
I've played paintball several times and I prefer indoor 'fields'.
However really big forest fields (woodsball) with some kind of role-play are also cool.

I would like to try speedball some day :)
Unfortunately, I’ve never played paintball. I think that is difficult to organise this event. You have to gather your friends in same place in same time. Your sample videos and article encourage me to try organize this event. It have to be good fun.

I tried only the second kind of paintball that is 'woodsball'. Each time it was a fun. In this game it is very important tactics and cooperation with others in a team. Hitting an opponent with a paint ball gives a lot of satisfaction and joy.

It is a form of leisure which I definitely recommend:)
Not a fun to be honest but I can understand that some people are into it.:)
I really like paintball, I've played it a few times with friends.
It was mainly "woodsball" as you described it in the article, although it's the first time I've encountered this term :)
The cool thing about paintball is that it allows you to make your own rules.
For example, I highly recommend The Hunger Games scenario where all of the players start in a big circle with weapons far away and in the center there is more ammunition and a better gun.
With the right group of people and the right playground, it's really fun!

I am so not into paintball that maybe only politics is a more distant subject for me;)
I don't get excited by pretending to fight in any way: not in video games, not in paintball. I am a coward and when I once played paintball I spent the entire game sitting behind a bush and pretending I even wasn't there. And these suits - covered in somebody else's sweat from the inside, thick, in my case way too big (they didn't have child suits, only ones or fully grown men), smelly helmets - ew, ew, ew. And the markers are not as harmless as they say - my friends always have their backs all bruised when theyfinish their paintball sessions and once I knew a guy that got accidentally hit in his face and had a nasty wound for a couple of weeks. He has a scar on his jaw to this day (this happened 10 years ago).
Anyway, I understand that people enjoy this as a sport and as a way of entertainment, but this is not my type of thing. However, I really like listening about the paintball fields and how the owners put A LOT of effort to make them very interesting (post-apo in old mental health facilities, some battlefield or sci-fi themes).

I played paintball once, when I was twelve years old. It was woodsball, I think. I remember, that organisator considered young age of the participants, so unfortunately we had imposed limitation of our actions... However, I really liked it.
Reading your presentation I wish to play it again, cause I always loved wood, running, competition and adrenaline :)

I not a fan of paintball or any other sport which is based on military-style. But thank you for the article, the story of beginnings is really interesting. Especially information about cowboys who was using paintball guns to mark the trees :) Honestly I would prefer to ride a horse and shooting into the trees, it seems to me much funnier.

I love paintball, I've played it very often with my friends in the past. I prefer playing it in the open area. Now I don’t have much time to play paintball because it takes a whole day, but the summer is coming so maybe I will find some times to hang out with my friends and play it!

When I was in high school I used to play paintball. We gathered with friends once or twice in a month, pack all necessary gear and go to some abandoned factory or to the woods to shoot at each other and have some fun. One of my friends, Tomek, was very much into chemistry and he had access to the laboratory so he always prepared some smoke grenades and flash-bangs to make the battlefield simulation more real. It always was hell lot of fun and if I have an occasion I definitely would pack my stuff and go play.
I've plaid paintball only a few times and I liked it. It was similar to 'woodsball' but much less serious. More like a bunch of people with markers running around on a small forest area and shooting at each other. I personally liked laser tag much more but that's just because it requires less preparation. You just go to a laser tag place and play, don't even need to change clothes.
The idea of more serious 'woodsball' looks like a much better experience. After this presentation maybe I will give it a shot.

I've never played paintball, so I don't know these feelings. But it looks pretty interesting for me and I'd be very glad to play it someday with a good team. :)

It might be a bit weird but I'm generally pacifist. In paintball I love adrenaline, whole tactics aspect, and the most - many really fantastic players.

I have neve tried to play it but I always want to do it. It must be great I think.
I am planning to participate in paintball match this summer. I never tried that before, but I've always wanted to do it. I am fan of FPP shooters since 1992, I still play CS 1.6 very often.

In Warsaw there are some great places where you can play on indoor field. We can go one day and 'dye it hard' :)

What is your Steam nick ? We could play a bit :)
I still have 1.3 on my old computer with hundreds of unique maps, some enormous. By the time 1.3 was current version I liked rats maps the most. If you play 1.6 between 00:00 and 00:59 this server is great: 89.44.246.62:27015 .
Did you get lof of bruises? Did you ever were shot in the neck?

One of the best games ever - for big boys (and girls too!) who wants to "play war" on higher level. For me paintball provides great opportunity to get rid of all stress, bad emotions and to relax (not in ordinary meaning of this word). So if you like sport, adrenaline and you are not affraid of little pain it's perfect sport for you

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
