Week 4 [27 October - 2 November]: "Ambition" by Platige Image, deeper look at the future of the Rossetta mission

The whole movie:

“Ambition is a collaboration between Platige Image and ESA. Directed by Tomek Bagiński and starring Aiden Gillen and Aisling Franciosi, Ambition was shot on location in Iceland, and screened on 24 October 2014 during the British Film Institute’s celebration of Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder, at the Southbank, London”  [1]

The movie is the short Rosetta mission promotion clip. ESA agency invited a Polish studio to cooperate with them to produce 6 minute long clip in a very existential sci-fi climate presenting the future of human existence.

Ambition, as I wrote, has very existential climate and focuses on human life. It is a story how our life’s can look like in the future. Rossetta mission was one of main milestones and it is initiating further events presented for us in clip. But, to be specific what is actually this Rossetta mission?

Rosetta is a robotic space probe built and launched by the European Space Agency to perform a detailed study of a comet launched on 2 March 2004 to be the first spacecraft orbiting a comet. Scientists believe in theory that water on earth comes from asteroids and the whole purpose of this spacecraft is to gathering information from space for further studies. To be more specific…

“The spacecraft has already performed two asteroid flyby missions on its way to the comet. In 2007, Rosetta also performed a Mars swing-by (flyby), and returned images. The craft completed its fly-by of asteroid 2867 Šteins in September 2008 and of 21 Lutetia in July 2010. On 20 January 2014, Rosetta was taken out of a 31-month hibernation mode and continued towards the comet. It has been estimated that in the decade preceding 2014, some 2,000 people had assisted in the mission in some capacity.” [2]

No one actually knows for how long the Rosetta mission would last but it can definitely bring some interesting information about different places in space which can maintain simple life forms or places possessing layers of water.

Maybe we are not alone?

I love Tomasz Baginski movies. There are mysterious and perfect in every details. This is truly world class. The first film of Baginski I've seen was "The Cathedral" from 2002- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrCN2dLFf5Y. This film was nominated to Oscar in the category of animated short film. On the internet you can find different interpretation of this short movie. If the universe is a powerful as scentists says, surely we are not alone.

I really like the way how the movie looks like. SFX looks very well and it has its magical atmosphere.

When I am watching something like this I am really happy to see, that our compatriots can make something so good, it makes me feel proud of Poles :)

Considering the topic I think it’s important to mention the Voyager program launched in 1977. Two voyagers were designated to study the planetary systems of Jupiter and Saturn but they were able to continue on their mission and in 2012 one of the probes became the first human-made object to enter interstellar space which was never explored before! (The second Voyager will get there in 2 years). They both contain images, natural sounds of wind, animals etc., music and greetings from people in about 50 languages. I think it’s a great message to send into space and I was really excited to hear when the probe passed the “border”!
Special effects in the video are staggering. Nice promo, altough it is very abstractional, but it doesn't matter because it attracts attention

It would be fun to know which events from the present will be seen as milestones in the future.
There is possibility that people in the future might have totally different perspective on ongoing events. Do you see any progress/evolution which is omitted by political correct media today that will have big impact to the future?
I can see that most of the comments are about how great SFX are in this film. I must admit that I am really amazed too by the SFX and the clip as a whole. In general, I am a big fan of sci-fi in every form.

As for Rossetta mission, I think it is great that the scientists are looking for source of life outside the Earth. Afterall, It would be a little sad if humans were the only living form in the universe.
I believe that in the future there will be two kinds of people. Genetically enhanced and normal ones. Just like nowadays there are rich and poor people.

Wow, the movie is really impressive. As anyone has mentioned SFX is amazing.
But I've noticed one thing like a passion and ambition. I'm really sure that people shouldn't give up every time something goes wrong, they should continue and then they will reach what they are fighting for. It's just about time and desire.

Tomasz Baginski is a great artist and the movie is amazing :)
Just like Natalia, I'm really proud of Poles when I hear about such achievements.

Are we alone in the universe? I don't think so. The number of stars and solar systems out there is so big that there is a great chance of a planet that may have conditions favourable to life. I'm not in the position to say whether it is a bacteria-type living organism or a space dinosaur, but still... there is a possibility of life existing out there.

+ there is a chance that NASA knows about something, but they will not inform us to spare unnecessary commotion ;)

Does these space probes really contain such information? Animals sounds... It sounds more like school project than research mission. However if aliens exist at least we will welcome them nicely in old fashion way :D

It was meant to be a "message in the bottle" that we put into space, and there is much more then animal sounds. There are famous paintings, photographs and different kinds of music, human voices but they've put in some nature stuff too because it's supposed to be a "picture" of whole Earth. Anyway I'm sure I've heard about more projects that have sent information into space (school projects too ;) ) but this one is the most famous because it's so far away and for some time we'll still have contact with it and it'll be able to gather some information.

Oh, and there is also a greeting from a president of United States - Jimmy Carter :)
Here is the whole list of things that are on it:

The movie looks great and its visual effects are very impressive.

As for the question closing this article, I've read recently very interesting article about it here: http://waitbutwhy.com/2014/05/fermi-paradox.html
Of course you won't find the answer there, but it briefly explains some interesting ideas scientists came up with.

Tomasz Baginski does amazing animations. My favorite is probably about the Polish history. In a very interesting way to show how was changing history and state borders.

Baginiski's animations always amaze me. They are so detailed and precise that sometimes I can't believe that it's all SFX. Apart from the animations, the idea of creating this movie as a promotional video is great. I'm sure that it will get people's attention and get them interested in the Rosetta mission.
The subject of life outside our planet is fascinating but also a bit scary for me. When I look at the night sky I prefer to simply admire it's beauty and vastness.

To be honest I was rather dissapointed. When I first saw the trailer of the movie I thought "Wow, this is a movie worthy of watching in cinema". Why is it only 6,5 minutes long T_T. It's the same for all the creations of the Tomasz Baginski. You watch his movie and wonder "Come on! Where is the rest? That looks too awesome to be this short". Well... maybe one day he will make a whole 1,5 hour long movie :)
I also really like "The Catherdral". What was your favourite thing about it?
My thoughts exactly. It's so cool that such things are being created in our country. Have you seen Bagiński's trailer to "The Vikings"?
I agree with @michałwągrodzki. I was a bit disapointed. I started to watch this, at first it was a little boring but the effects of course were spectacular. Then I started to get involved and suddenly it was the end of the movie. Shame. I'm looking forward to see such project but in lobger version. But all in all I think it was cool and I really like watching Bagiński's animations:)

We can't be the only living form int entire universe:) Check this:

It's a 3-D map of the local universe (out to a distance of 380 million light-years) It took more than 10 years to complete.
It's just too big for 1 form of life.
As for the movie I won't be original - the SFX are amazing! Bagiński is doing "the job". I also like the idea of "new human abilities". It's pretty much possible that through centuries people will unlock powers/abilities that now are only possible on the silver screen.

I like Baginski animations, all are done at a very high level. Each of them tells an interesting story. For me, that they are relatively short is their advantage. I think this promo film is one of the best made by Tomek. Fun fact is that he studied architecture.
Are we alone in the universe? Probably not, it would be unlikely given its vastness, complexity.

Yeah, outstanding!

At the outset, I’d like to say that I am a big fan of Platige Image. I think that their productions really are among the best in the world. The project "Ambition" in terms of technology does not differ from the rest of the Platige production. On the other hand, I think that is one of the unique projects, due to the history that it tells. Perhaps soon we will find out about the discovery of water by Rosetta.

I agree that Platige is world class in field of 3d and FX. And Im proud that Ambition is made by polish studio.

I also agree that it's impossible that we are the only one living form in universe and its matter of time when we will discover our compatriots,  the same as Columb discovered America while no one thought about another continents

Amazing clip. And I think that we're not alone, but will we ever have opportunity to make contact with aliens, I'm not so sure.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
