Week 4: Futuristic movies and books – pure sci-fi or preview of tomorrow?

People have always wondered what will the future bring. Thousands of novelist and ordinary people often wonder  what’s to come and try to predict what life will look like in next centuries. Many inventors worked on new inventions, gadgets and solutions which advanced our technology and brought us closer to the future.

How many of us have seen some kind of a futuristic movie or read a futuristic book with gadgets we wished to have at our disposal. “Brave new world” by Aldous Huxley offered us an outlook on the future of genetic modification and in vitro fertilization. Hopefully we’ll have more common sense not to push it that far, and we’ll use it only to improve our life not to substitute ourselves for preprogrammed clones.

A well-known futuristic author Henry George Wells in his “Time Machine” offered us first insight into what future might be like and in which direction we might be heading for.  His outlook on the future was not to bright – he predicted the collapse of the mankind as we know it due to some kind of world war. Just recently another well-known author Dan Brown in his bestseller “Dante’s Inferno” informed us of even more realistic threat to the mankind – overpopulation.

Also movie writers dwell on the future in numerous more or less realistic versions of what’s to come. Just to mention a few: “A.I. (Artificial Intelligence)”, "2001: A Space Odyssey", “World War Z”, “Book of Eli” and many more.

Some of those predictions were about times that already passed, about present day or near future. But all of those show us also many futuristic solutions or gadgets that we were supposed to have already or soon develop.

Just at the beginning of this month I read an interesting article about a company called HUVr which claimed to have developed one of those gadgets that many of us probably dreamt to have. Namely the Hovering Board from “Back to the future” movie. Not many people know this but 2014 is the year to which the main character in the movie traveled to.

To great disappointment it was a hoax by the notorious FunnyOrDie team.

But is everything in those movies and books just pure fiction? Or were the authors just a few years off? We  already  went to the moon, cloned a sheep and seized the power of atom. Yet we still yearn for some of the tools promised in those forecasts.

I just can’t wait for the technology from the movie “Ender's Game”. The main character, called Ender played with so called “Mind Game” which visualized on the screen our thoughts and in doing so created the world of the game. As I love arts that would be my favorite must-have among futuristic gadgets.

Questions:
What is your opinion on the topic? Do you have a favorite futuristic book or movie that you hope will be our true future? Maybe you have a dream gadget you already want to lay your hands on?

I think that some of these technologies, which we have now hadn't been invented if not movies and books. Authors, who are people with great imagination, inspire others to try to create things similar to the one present in their works. However I don't say that inventors aren't able to come up with their own ideas, but for sure people try harder to make things, which they have seen in their favorite movies or their read in books. I also think that some people may become an engineer, inventor because of futuristic movies and books from their childhood. Such things have huge influence on what we choose to do in future.
If you ask me about my dream gadget I won't be very creative. To me it is teleport. I would like to be able to flit between places within a minute or two. Travels take too much time. Anyway, I'm not a specialist, but unfortunately I heard that it is not possible...

@Sylwia I agree with you. Sometimes people, here scientists, don't have very strong imagination, but what they have are skills. If you put an idea in a brilliant mind he can bring it to life - just like HUVr company. For example, in Star Trek there were already sliding door and communicators. Remember the invisible cloak from "Harry Potter"? It's been almost created in real life- the invented material makes light bend away from it. Movie directors should be more daring so the scientists would have even crazier ideas! Teleport would be a great invention. When it comes to traveling I'd chose time travels. Unfortunately, there rather won't be such a thing, as we cannot see the influence of future people right now. 2 years ago Stephen Hawking even threw a party for time travellers, sending invitations the day after but no one showed up :) http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2168178/Stephen-Hawking-held-party-time-travellers--turned-.html
But who knows, with the imagination of the moviemakers we can expect more unimaginable in the future!

I was always disappointed that cool gadgets that are portrayed in the movies (but not only, even concepts presented by real-life companies) never happen. Even awesome technologies I read about, with planned release dates for "next 3-5 years" rarely come true, unfortunately. That is very disappointing in my opinion. It seems like that while we have huge advancements in mobile technology, still the world seems to be moving a little bit slower than in the 80s and 90s when so many new things were invented or planned each year, so many breakthroughs in many other fields of science happened.

I read about the party that Stephen Hawking arranged. That's a cool story I hadn''t heard about. I personally am deeply interested in Stephen Hawking's fields of science and his books. Seems like the humanity will be annihilated before time travel is possible or maybe time is just a dimension that cannot change direction, and thus matter cannot exceed the speed of light. Which is too bad, since I'd like to see so many things from my past all over again. But since I couldn't see my older self doing that when I was a kid, it means I will never be able to do it.

To go back on topic, the thing I'd like the most from the movies of the future is a teleportation device. Mostly because I could save time and money on distant travels ;-)

I can see that teleport is the most wanted invention here. Nowadays people live really fast, imagine how the teleport could even speed up this race. Not to mention that the economy would be turned upside down, transportation as we know it completely eliminated. There would have to be introduced new laws - imagine immigration on that big scale, when no one can stop you from just pop out in a different country. Or you'd be able to teleport into the bank's vaults and steal money. Teleportation would means recreated most of our laws. But surely, hanging out with friends on some island in one minute and going to work in next minute would be great!

I still wait for Star Wars to happen, even though it happened "long time ago in a galaxy far far away". I don't care, I wan't to ride a Millennium Falcon!
Anyway, I read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Philipp K. Dick and thought that this might be a quite realistic future. Especially with animals. It starts already, actually. That whichever animal you own, you show your social status. Very interesting.
With gagdets I stopped looking at those as a mark of a future, because we already make so many of them. But I watch films where they show a social whay of a future civilization. That is the most interesting way. And so "The book of Eli", "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", "Total recall".
I read "Enders Game" and it was a fantastic book. And I'am affraid to see a movie. But I hope, that something like that will never happen...

@Dalvia Have you heard that in US there was a petition to build Death Star last year? :D Unfortunately, the idea didn't passed though it had required number of signs. The Chief of the Science Department officially admitted in response "This isn't the petition response you're looking for" :) He said that if one person can destroys something that big there's no point in building it.

As I read this article I also immediately thought about the Star Wars :D. I had in mind a new part of the movie and vehicles moving through the air. Finally, the problem of traffic congestion would be solved!
When I was younger I read all the books and watched all the movies of Harry Potter, so I think it is clear that I want to play quidditch :). Flying on the gryphon or drinking strange potions would be cool too :P.

Quickly need something for everyday flying =)

I liked the book you mentioned – “Brave new world” by Aldous Huxley – very much.
I remembered it as political propaganda of the world ruled by three things: community, sameness and stability.
2001: A Space Odyssey is one of my favorite sci-fi movies! I’ve seen a Czechoslovakian movie from the 60’s – Ikaria. I recommend this one to the fans of old science fiction.
I love watching movies, as well as reading old sci-fi books. There you can find great inventions predicted by the authors. We use some of the gadgets nowadays!

I think that, the human kind for centuries fascinating the future “futuristic” times. Surprisingly, the most of this inventions which are presented in early literary works were finally invented, for example submarine from “Twenty thousand miles under the sea” Jules Gabriel Verne’s, and we must look at this that kind of vehicles in huge scale was only in dreams and just after few decades man was able to build this ships and even using them in military purpose. Perhaps, the same is concerns to the rockets and landing on the Moon. Rockets and space travelers was only sphere of dreams, but thanks to curious and determination human could finally get started "conquest" of space. Telling about cosmos I can’t ignore the movies from universe of “Star Wars”, cause here we can take many of inspirations. This movies show us a lot of precursory solutions for example hyperspace engine, droids (A.I.), modern military equipment, using for military purposes clones, and we must don’t forget lightsabers. Some of this technology used in this universe are already approximately works and we can mention here: on-board computer in cars, early prototypes of holoprojector (we can say here about 3D screens). What about hyperspace engine, in my opinion the scientists theoretical knew how to do this (calculations of Einstein), however the problem is ability to create working innovative engine which can allow to fold the spacetime.
However, with regard to such devices like teleporter I think this kind of inventions will be doomed to fail. Quite recently researchers had proved that to teleport something from point A to point B we need to destroy their original matter and rebuild in 100% in destination place, and somehow I don’t like to be disintegrated to atoms and probably not survive.
Speaking generally, the human kind isn’t said the last word and I think with time todays fiction became reality and even after one thousand years man will be dreaming about something which are unavailable, however while for the next thousand years it probably become real.

What is your opinion on the topic?
The topic is very interesting. It is true that some what we call movie fiction will be our reality in next few years.
Do you have a favorite futuristic book or movie that you hope will be our true future?
Hmmm... thats a hard question. I think that intelligent robots would be something very useful. Robots which can not only think but also feel like humans. We could say robots that have soul. Or perhaps a hybrid half human and half robot.
It would be great if people invent medicine for death and all diseases. Would that not be great? Pill for ageing would be great too!

Maybe you have a dream gadget you already want to lay your hands on?
Definitely time machine. With that tool you can do so many good in the world. For example you could stop the plane to avoid the disaster. You could make yourself reach easily only by playing lottery!

Regarding the magick floating desk made by HUVr. Of Course it was a hoax ! :). But you have to say that many people will believe them. If you look carefully you will be able to see ropes and shadows of the equipment that lifts all the actors flying the boards.

I think that the authors of movies or books have a great and large imagination to produce beautiful things like the Hovering Board using in “Back to Future”. In my opinion the idea looks in the following way:
The authors create something special and unpredictable for an average person as a special effect, next viewers like it and designers produce something similar. And in this way author’s imagination become something used in every day situation, so designers in fact don’t create something new, but only exchange author’s imagination into practice. I’m not saying that designers never create something new. They do a lot. For example, I’m really waiting for transparent tv designed by Michael Friebe that it will be able to become a marvelous piece of technology that will combine conventional LCD with the latest TOLED display technology. This will allow to create non-transparent / solid moving pictures with rich color reproduction and full contrast range from solid black to pristine white. http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m7rhmi2m8D1rsftq9o1_500.jpg

@Kacper K, Imagine that the whole technology you see in movies now can become real in some time. This is really amazing how scientists' view can be directed by futuristic movies and books. Is this means that the movies' authors are the real inventors? It's hard to say, indeed. However, scientists' work is way harder than a designer's. They need to give a life into a designer's imagination and that's something!
Some things like plane, smartphone, car, computers etc. are normally today. If you had told about these days tens year before, nobody would have believed you. Further, when I was young imaginative child, I would never said that after 10-15 years world will look like today. This is the same story with future. Films or books are usually overdo, but a piece may be true. Look at the James Bond films. Maybe is not a science fiction film ,but some scenes are impossible for those time. For example “Tomorrow Never Dies”, where Pierce Brosnan drives the car by phone. Today is not a bigger problem, but in 1997 they had to move steering system to the back to recorded the scene: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5d/007-BMW.jpg
I’m not a fan of sci-fi, futuristic movie or books. My last sci-fi film is “Inception” with DiCaprio, who has to implant the idea to someone’s mind. Impossible, maybe in future. Who knows ? I think that future can only be better and easier to life. I find my dream gadget in your article. It’s the HUVr board. What a pity youtube’s film was a hoax :)

That is very interesting topic, all future tools mentioned in books or movies, will probably push someone to try to make it real someday. My dream is to live during times when some of those are real, but on the other hand i know that the success of theese things depends on us, people, and the way we are going to use it.
I've seen this HUVr board's movie and i am soo disappointed, i would spend all my money on it.

more and more items starts be like from old sci-fi movie ;D smaler and smaler tablets, smartwatch itp. u can build mouse in glove :D so u can using computer by hand move :) it's not so good for now, and this one i saw was hand made, but it's was preatty easy to done ;D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTZEHObmB0M
or, of course u can buy pro version ^^'
I believe science – fiction will exist for ever as a concept, only what actually is considered sci – fi will change. When things we see on futuristic movies or read in books will become normal, every day routine people will come up with other things that will be considered crazy and impossible. That's the great thing about humans: limitless imagination. Personally I always that that the James Bond series had great gadgets in them. But I think my dream gadget, if we can call it that, is the interface from Minority Report, which actually nowadays is something you can already have. I am sure that one day I will have something in my home that will work like that, just moving floating pictures in the air with your bare hands, I just don't now what and when xD. So, if my dream device has been invented, why shouldn't any other get it's chance some day?

What a crazy topic, few days ago, I discussed it with my friend, she says "a matter of time when most of these gadgets appears in today's world". In my opinion maybe 10% has possible to see daylight. My dream gadget is "google glass", it's available only for google friends. Sorry for weak answer, this topic isn't for me.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
