Week 9:"Today's corporations, cyberpunk vision of the future"

What is a cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk is a science-fiction genre born in literature, which focuses on people living in technologically advanced future (main technological focus is put on information technology and cybernetics). It typically focuses on the dark side of technological advancement, which is connection to the machine and cyberspace through cybernetic implants.

The rule is that in the world of cyberpunk there exist companies and corporations which are extremely  influential. Because of that all the civilization is concentrated in the cut-off cities where freedom and liberty are taken from people under the guise of defense of humanity. This often leads to the origin of rebellious underground groups. The last thing to mention is cyberspace. It's like an internet, but with proper implants or equipment you are able to connect your mind to. This was the cause of creation of the information society, where information is an extremely valuable commodity. The commodity  which hackers can provide for the right price.

What is the vision of cyberpunk corporations?

As mentioned before, the rule in this genre is presence of corporations which are extremely influential. What it would be like if the free market was controlled by a few corporations, which control all -the business in the world? Imagine a world, where everything is owned by coca-cola.

Imagine, that even police, politics and scientific research can be controlled by corporations. This is cyberpunk. A world in which very few people control every aspect of your life and society has lost its  rights to fight.

This vision, created by William Gibson, isn’t very appealing. His work depicted a world extremely different to the utopian vision of future from 1950s. One example of his work is Johnny Mnemonic. It is a story about a person who, thanks to a brain implant, is able to secretly transport valuable information. I am pretty sure many, if not every one of us, heard that name. It might be because of move adaptation of the story. Why am I bringing this up? The main focus in this movie is on data held by Johnny. This data stolen from a pharmacological company contain a cure for a disease which ravages the civilization. Now imagine you have such a cure. Would you share it with everyone? Or would you sell it for thousands of dollars?

Why do I bring this topic up?

What do you think about it? Are we in danger of creating such a monster? Nowadays companies are involved in many aspects of our lives. We are dependent on brands and buy things with no real need for them. With this, companies gain more money and thus more power. As money can grant you many things. This can be seen in the TV series called “Better Off Ted”. There you can see an exaggerated corporate life in a corporation called Veridian Dynamics. This stereotypically evil company experiments on its employees, twists the truth, and will do everything to achieve its goals.

  1. Do you think this fiction will become reality?
  2. Have you seen “Better Off Ted”? Is it really that exaggerated?

Comments

I think that the whole topic of all powerful corporations is largely exaggerated. Of course there are many global companies that are very rich and have large influence on our life. But as you wrote in the presentation the gain their power by selling to us many things that we don’t actually need. So the solution is quite simple. We have to be responsible consummates and that’s all we have to do.

But back to the original topic. I don’t believe that there is any company in the world that can influence the politics in such a scale that is shown in Cyberpunk. And I don’t think that it will ever happen in the formidable future. The main reason is that most of those companies have conflict of interest so they had to agree among themselves how to influence the global politics to serve all their interests. And no company is rich enough to take action large enough to influence our life in some significant way (start a war for example). Of course they have billions $ of income but that is still not enough.

But I agree that we face a problem like companies that are so large that “they are too big to fall” as the recent financial crisis shown. That is the responsibility of the world governments not to allow that to happen ever again, and I believe that preclusion matters taken after the bankruptcy of Leman Brothers bank will be sufficient.

As for the “Better Off Ted” I’ve never saw even a fragment so I don’t have anything to say about it.
For me fiction slowly appearing to reality. Human kind are getting more dependence on some of new things from today's World, for example: Facebook or internet. Companies are known about that, so they clever add them products, even when random person say us if never watched advertisements will be associate some parts of spots like irritating music. Nowadays, corporations can influence to human psychic, that’s how Coca-Cola made for us appearance of Santa Claus (wearing red coat, long white beard) and to this day we know this kind of saint.
In the worst scenario, the most influential companies could start making a little countries and next expand influence further and force people their will and products.

It's true that large corporations have leverage to affect the government and the public. They're doing this even today. I belive that in the future this influence will be even greater. Whether it will eventually lead to them overtaking/marginalising the government and controlling our lives is too difficult to predict. I like to think we will never allow it, because there are people working in those companies as well, not robots. One of the things that makes us human is that we want to help eachother.

Cyberpunk, diesel punk, steam punk and all other "punks" (and believe me, there are many of them) always where topics of interest for me. I really enjoy the various visions of the world and like to ponder "what if" something was different. However all these ideas remain in the realm of fiction or imagination for me. In the case of this particular concept, I don't really believe that corporations have THAT much control over everything we do and we are not slaves, at least not in the true meaning of the word. Of course due to globalization many people have become somewhat dependant from some powerful companies, but I don't think that the vision of all-mighty corporations literally ruling the world is so likely to happen. When thinking of a different reality, a distorted version of our "normal" world, almost always some exaggerations are made, so that things that never would happen, actually do happen. Also in the case of cyberpunk, the power of corporations is the necessary exaggeration to create an interesting concept.

I agree that for now there is no company, which has enough power to completely control whole World. What's more I do not think that any of existing companies will accomplish that till the end of my life.

To me there is just one especially influencial trade. It's pharmacology and medicine. There are many illness, which can be cure. Unfortunately people, which suffer are not rich enough to undergo therapy. For these people such companies have essential influence, life or death. Just one word and they can support any person and treat her/him.

However on the other hand companies have also influence on our's everyday life. They make products with particular features, they decide what we can and can't possess, they control supplies and prices and what is most important they create our needs. Basicly they decide for us how our life will look like. Of course not everyone will follow it, but only few will resist. It's hard to go against the current. Live simple life and do not care about trends and other people. To me somehow it means give up your development, staing behind others. People expect you to look, think and behave some particular way and if you are diffrent you do not fit to this society. You will not achieve your goals (or at least it'll be harder) This expectation are created by marketing and developed by society as no one wants to be an outcast.

I have never seen and even heard about “Better Off Ted” I do not have opinion about it.

I must say I've learned something new from this post :)
I've heard the term 'cyberpunk' before but had somewhat vague picture of what it really means (I thought it focus on technology and robotics but without those big corporations aspects). And while I was reading this, I've asked myself a question "so, isn't it true that we kind of live in cyberpunk now?" There's already so much power and influence possesed by so small amount of entities, most of them of business character rather than political. And it seems like never before so much was controlled by so few.
I'm not particulary afraid of this vision, I can imagine even worse scenarios for humanity ;)
As for Better off Ted, I've never heard of this...

No, because it already happened we just didn't ralize it (yet). http://www.qortuba.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Companies-map.jpg This is, I hope fake, map of companies in the world. As you can see almost everything which you buy (in case of food) is made by them. Is not the part of the cyberpunk? We don't have speical chips in our brains but this is only matter of time. We are
being spied by NSA and others anyway so this chips are not that needed.

Great picture! I seriously didn't think of putting something like that. It's sadly true that most every little company is run by those big corporations. Funny thing is that there are sometimes few "players" on the same market which really belong to same corporation.

I think that there is not one single company that rules the world, but there are companies that rule major parts of different regions.

As Sylwia mentioned - pharmacy is a good example.

Companies like Samsung in Korea which are very influential.

Facebook with all its data.

Amazon - hosting 1/3 of the Internet.

Gas companies. Car manufacturers slowing down changes in the industry.

And many many more, with governments on top of them, spying all of them.

Sure! Why not? Many inventions that we are happy to use today was a fiction few years before. Mainly literal and movie fiction, but back then computers were not so popular as they are now. So You cannot say that "it is impossible" or "it will happen for sure". anything is possible. We live in golden age of technology so we can do whatever we want. Any type of future is available. There is a numerous examples of futures in movies, games and books. As for the second question i have seen this TV series so i cant say anything.

Cyber Punk leaves a lot of room for interpretations. Is the world we are living in is from ground - controlled by big corporations. Who or which one is standing behind it How much money we're talking about? Throughout all those years we thought that all this was fiction, now it is a reality. Who would have thought that in those 15 years we would move forward so fast with all the technology. Thanks to it we improved our lives too...
And yeah, I've never watched that, so cannot really say anything creative here.

I am not sure whether this is fiction. Currently I think medicine has big problem with pharmaceutical lobby, imagine situation when some disease can be simple cured by just invented surgery. Normally the disease needs to be treated by taking pills till end of the life (of course you have to buy it), the surgery makes you fully health and you don’t need to buy and medicals. Is the “Big Pharma” happy? I don’t think so. I think they stopped many valuable researches and they will still do it. I think similar situation we have with the oil industry.
I have never seen “Better Off Ted” so I can’t answer this question.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
