Week 4: Aesthetic medicine

This is my second presentation and I want to discuss with you quite a controversial topic which is medical cosmetology. Did you try it, or would you? And if you are a man and you think this topic is not for you I encourage you to debate for or against  it even more! Would you do  it to yourself? Or how would you react to information that your girlfriend was not always so pretty? ;)
To be more specific let me define what aesthetic medicine is and even more important what it is not.

         According to wikipedia:
"Aesthetic medicine is a branch of medicine, plastic surgery, focused on satisfying the aesthetic desires and goals of patients" - Of course in almost every case this kind of treatments are used by completely healthy people. On the other hand, "Aesthetic medicine comprises all medical procedures in the field of Aesthetics excluding all surgical procedures which require an operating table and general anesthesia".

So this excludes breast implants, facelifts or rhinoplasty. Sometimes it can be performed within one day - effects are instant and in most cases not last forever.

Let me introduce to you some examples:

Injections Botulinum toxin (Botox)

It is used as an anti-wrinkle treatment and in reducing mimic wrinkles, effect can last from 6 weeks to 8 months. First use of botox was described in 1989 by Dr. Richard Clark, and in 2002 it was officially approved to be used in temporary mimic wrinkles reduction.

CO2 laser is  used to remove superficial wrinkles, tattoos and acne scars. The laser cuts very little holes in our skin so it can repair itself. Convalescence lasts for 4-5 days but effects last forever!

And for a dessert an "urban legend" related to aesthetic medicine:
Once upon a time in some Asian country lived a happy marriage. One day the wife gave birth to unfortunately a very ugly child. After the test which proved  that they were both parents of this child, the husband asked his beloved if she had had any plastic surgery. Her confirmation was the end of their fairy tale ;) (Besides she had to pay  him compensation.)

Questions:
1. What is your opinion about that kind of treatments?
2. Would you like to be with a person who had  plastic surgery?
3. Would you end your relationship if you found out that your beloved had plastic surgery?
If you need an example:

Comments

This is a topic I don't really have strong fillings about, which makes it hard for me write extensively, but I'll do my best :P. I can't say I approve of such treatments. Generally I don't like the idea of people getting any kind of surgery on a whim. I believe that many people don't think such things seriously enough and don't think it thoroughly. That said, I can see that for some people aesthetics could be the only way. While I believe that it is important to accept yourself and to improve in more... let's say "natural" ways, I still can understand that some people may not feel comfortable with how they look. And I can understand that in some cases a person may be so desperate, that such a treatment might be the only way for them, to achieve happiness in life. And for that sake I condone doing it, because I think that it's very important to have serenity in life and as long as achieving it doesn't mean hurting others I think it's ok to do whatever.
Saying all that I think it's quite obvious that I wouldn't mind being with a person that undergone plastic surgery. I would be upset though if I would've discovered this fact only later, only because I believe that honesty is the most important part of a relationship. However I wouldn't end it only because of that.

I don't think there's anything wrong with plastic surgery. Personally I wouldn't like to have one, but I see it rather as an accomplishment for nowadays medicine and science. It just follows the basic need of people to make world around them better and constantly improve the nature. And if there are people who are going to pay lots of money for changing their look? Good for them, it's as natural as people willing to spend irrational amount of money on clothes/cosmetics/homes/cars/gadgets. I don't really see plastic surgery as something which can be concluded as "good/approved" or "bad/disapproved". Besides, the idea reminds me very much of make-up - you do something to look way better than naturally, and with good cosmetics and skills you can fool many people - the only difference here is that it's not permanent, but does it make any difference for judging the basic idea?

1. What is your opinion about that kind of treatments?
I think that it's your life/body and you can do everything with it as long as you are sane and don't affect others. For me plastic surgery is a tool to help people cure i.e. acne scars, and I don't think I would use it in any other way, even though there are times I can't look at myself in the mirror (but I think everyone has times like that).

2. Would you like to be with a person who had plastic surgery?
Tricky question, this is the part when everyone says that they look at what is inside of a person, not how this person looks like. I would say that looks are important for everyone and as long as she has wonderful personality I don't see a problem.

3. Would you end your relationship if you found out that your beloved had plastic surgery?
I can't say I would not, because this is one of the situations when you can't be sure of how would you react, but I would try to consider her feelings.

Some people born pretty some are not. We cannot decide will we look good or not. It's every person private decision whether to do that kind of modification or not. It is very popular nowadays. i've got no clue can i date with someone who had a plastic durgery. Concerning ending a relationship, again, no clue. It depends on the modification and on the reasons.

Plastic surgery or maybe aesthetic medicine is nothing wrong if people who use it are in need for example after accidents when that kind of treatments is the only way to normal live for them but when that kind of treatments are used to pursue some model of beauty it is just strange to me…
I won’t judge people because everyone has free will and can decide what to do with health and money but still I don’t know if I am able to be with someone who has plastic surgery without need…
Third question is very complicated because it depends on many factors and most important one is when I discover that fact. If someone tell me after 5 years: “I had plastic surgery here, here and here” I will be angry not about treatment but about lying for 5 years so considering all I wouldn’t end our relationship because of that “issue”.

I agree with the comments of others on this topic. I won't criticize people for doing something with their appearance but I wouldn't do it personally. However, the effects of surgeries can sometimes be dangerous and it's difficult to tell how you will look years later. Some people treat them like tattoos: they don't stop with just one. I remember a recent case where it ended badly for the patient: http://wiadomosci.wp.pl/kat,1342,title,Szwedka-w-spiaczce-po-operacji-szpital-proponuje-pomoc,wid,12883538,wiadomosc.html. I'm sure there are way more such news. This was a more invasive operation but I think aesthetic medicine can be in some circumstances as well.

@Tomek Niezgoda I also heard that this kind of treatment are psychologically addictive - if you start to "repair" yourself it is more likely that you will be never happy of what you have, especially if problems lays somewhere else.

Esthetic medicine, do we need it? Well no, but yes. No, because we are not equal and we shouldn’t become this fashion zombies that we are now just to be like our actors/singers/other stars. And yes, because we need to keep the economy rolling, spend some of our money on some useless things, it doesn’t matter if it’s esthetic medicine, some surgery or other treatments.
We are all great, but sometimes we don’t see it at first.

@Michał Wągrodzki
#1 The topic of affecting other lives is not so simple, because if someone is starting to be addicted to it, it can be serious problem for whole family. Like with every addict.
#2 I know, that is why I asked that question ;)
#3 Thank you for the answer.

@Diana In my opinion there is no big diference bettwen "cheating" the nature with cosmetic and botox. Effect is quite the same but first one is more acceptable by society.
Esthetic medicine is something that people were using for thousands of years. We always tried to slow our ageing process by natural means. Nowadays we just have more sophisticated and advanced means of achieving our goal. So I think that esthetic medicine is simply the way of satisfying our natural needs, so the answer to the question do we need it is definitely YES.

Another question is the intensity of us using of esthetic medicine. We are constantly bombarded by images of unnaturally looking models. And then we face a funny paradox. Everybody knows that normally they don’t look like on the pictures that we see. They are “upgraded” by plastic surgeons and Photoshop and nevertheless most people believe that when the buy that specific peace of cosmetics that the advertise they will look just like them.

So yes we will use esthetic medicine always, that’s our nature, but we can’t get crazy about our appearance. As the say it’s wraths inside that matter the most.

Plastic surgery definitely comes with side effects. It is a well known fact yet people still go for it for the craving they have for beauty. Many people these days are choosing aesthetics medical training courses because of the passion they have to make people feel good about their looks and for more money.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form.
