Week 4 [04-10.11.19] Bacteria That Eats Plastic

Plastic pollution is one of the greatest problems of our planet. The period of decomposition of plastic is up to 500 years. So how plastic pollution problem could be solved? What if some organisms have evolved and have adapted to eat plastic? Let’s look at Morgan’s Vague discovery:

Questions:
What is your position on the plastic problem?
Do you use plastic?
Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?
Do you know any other solutions to this problem?

1. My position is that this is mainly the problem of Asia, because most of the plastic pollution comes from their rivers. Action we perform in Europe are pointless, if countries of Asia keep ignoring the problem. That doesn’t mean of course, that we should not fight the pollution. It is important to lead by example.

2. Yes, I do. I know there are certain people who can prove that it is possible to live without plastic, but it is too uncomfortable and sometimes expensive. I think that only by not using plastic by 1% of society, we won’t achieve anything. If particular rules won’t be enforced by law, or justified by economy, absolutely nothing will change. The majority of people have always been and will always be ignorant.

3. I am not a scientist, so I don’t know, but I wish it would be possible. I respect people like the one on the video, who actually try to do very specific things to solve environmental problems. In my humble opinion, such people are way more important than those like Greta Thunberg.

4. Yeah – build a huge dam near the mouth of all dirty, Asian rivers 😊In Europe we can always ban using non-biodegradable materials, but it could potentially lead to economical defeat by USA and China… The situation is kind of tragic.

What is your position on the plastic problem?
I think that on our planet there would be no problems with pollution of the Earth if people were more reasonable in approaching these issues. If people were aware of the harm they do to the environment, perhaps many problems would not exist now. In general, if people are engaged in the proper disposal of waste, then this issue can be circumvented. But not everyone understands this, so the modern world is phasing out plastic. There is probably a way out for our civilization, which is to reduce the amount of substances that decompose for a very long time.

Do you use plastic?
Yes, I use it, but I try to properly dispose of the waste. Today it is very difficult to get around, since everything that is sold in stores, all products are somehow contained in plastic packaging, or themselves are made of plastic.

Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?
I think that this problem can be solved with the help of similar bacteria, but it will take a lot of time, since it will be necessary to create special laboratories and production around the world. It will be very difficult to do this in the ocean. On the expanses of the ocean contains a lot of plastic islands, which are the size of entire states. It will be very difficult to deal with them, but if you try, you can solve this problem.

Do you know any other solutions to this problem?
First you need to deal with the disposal of waste, and the destruction or recycling of the garbage that has already accumulated over the past 50 years. You need to set up recycling around the world. And one of the big projects is of course to convey to people the solution to this problem. Well, as an option, you can use such bacteria. If there is a real solution for dealing with garbage islands in the oceans and it will be very realistic in applications, I think that such a project will be worthy of the Nobel Prize.

What is your position on the plastic problem?

Well when it comes to plastic I think it's a huge problem. We created something that is fouling earth and we can't simply get rid of it. First plastic ever made didn't biodegrade yet. The problem is that it is becoming more dangerous with every new produced piece of it. I'm using plastic always every day because you buy water in it, or drinks, food, sweets and a lot of other things. I think that bacteria is a foothold to get rid of plastic. Solution would be to just stop creating plastic any more and start using bacteria to get rid of the one that was produced earlier. We should find a way to swap from plastic to something else.

1. I think that it's a big problem which is hard to overcome. I know that there are some alternative counterparts to plastic products, like bags or metal straws, but it will take some time before people get used to it and understand that it can make a difference.

2. Yes, I'm trying not to use it too often, but sometimes there is no other option, e.g. when I'm buying things like yoghurts or other things that are in plastic package.

3. I'm not a specialist in microbiology, but I believe that it can be a solution. If not exactly this method such ideas will inspire other scientist and one day someone will come out with a great solution to this problem.

4. I think one of the ideas is to use other counterparts made from other materials. Of course it may be hard, as some of them are more expensive but maybe people will become more aware of this problems one day.

1. I think it's a very big problem and most people aren't aware of it. We are producing more and more plastic from year to year. If we don't make any serious moves to limit or get rid of plastic, we will be living in tons of it which will lead to destroy our enviroment.

2. It's hard not to use plastic nowadays. Even if you want to drink something, you have to buy a bottle which is usually made of plastic.

3. I think it's a good idea. People should produce less plastic items and more paper one. Moreover scientists could figure out how to speed up consuming plastic by this bacteria. So there would be less and less polution on the earth.

4. People should take this problem for granted and limit producing plastic products.

Every year when I have opportunity to write article or make a presentation, I try to bring up the subject of plastic and pollution. I didn't want to wait passively and see how plastic is consuming us. The only thing I could do is to stop or at least reduce consumption of plastic in my surroundings and make other people aware of the problem. I stopped using plastic bags, buying water in plastic bottles or other products in plastic packaging. I would love to believe that such a huge problem could be solved by small bacteria, but I'm skeptical. That would be fixing the problem but not solving it. Also using bacteria can has unexpected consequences and can end even worst than we can imagine. The only solution to this problem is to stop produce and use soo much plastic by changing our habits and conscious action.
Before writing the comment, I looked at the various graphs showing the use of plastics by countries/continents and it really won't change anything if Europe reduces the use of plastics. Of course we can use paper bags instead of plastic bags, not buy water in plastic bottles, use reusable bottles, but these are the actions on micro scale, very micro scale. The main problem is Asia, which in my opinion does not care about the problem at all (just write plastic rivers on google). I'm very glad that there are people who care about it and do something to change it, and they don't just say populism. Most food products are packed in plastic, so this is how I use plastic. I'm not a scientist, but if such bacteria exist, it's worth doing more work on them, maybe that's the solution. First we have to change the mentality of people living in Asia and show them that this problem is real (I doubt they will care), and then when they learn not to pollute the rivers, we can collect all the garbage and send it to the sun to burn it.
Piotr Bednarek said…
I agree that Europe is powerless in this problem, because Asia is producing the largest quantity of plastic. If we want to reduce plastic we should start from changing our habits, because everyone can do something for our planet, for instance reduce the amount of plastic that pollute oceanes and rivers. It is essential to raise awarness on plastic waste, because this problem was caused by people and only we can solve it. Personally, I use plastic because it is inseparable part of basic necessities. Of course I try to reduce the usage of plastic to a minimum, for example I stopped using plastic straw and plastic bag. I believe that it is possible to solve this problem, but it requires big changes. Firstly we should reduce our plastic dependency, we can replace plastic with other materials, secondly higher taxes and fees on polluting plastics can solve this problem
What is your position on the plastic problem?
I'm very aware of plastic problem and my opinion is that we should stop using it as soon as possible and find solutions to clean our planet from it. As it is said that in 2050 there will be more plastic in ocean than fishes.
Do you use plastic?
I barely use it and if it is possible i always try to use some different materials.
Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?
No, I don't think that it is possible due to too many plastic already on our planet.
Do you know any other solutions to this problem?
We have to create some machines that will convert it easily into different materials and stop using plastic as fast as possible.

What is your position on the plastic problem?
I fully agree that plastic pollution is a huge problem nowadays. People are using plastic to do various things and probably it won’t change both in the nearest and furthest future, as long as it is a really cheap and durable material. It’s also convenient and lightweight and it seems light there are no comparably cheap (and durable at the same time) materials. We can use paper as a substitute but it is not such enduring as plastic.
Do you use plastic?
I would say I try to reduce my plastic usage, e.g. I take my own bag or backpack when I go shopping. When I take plastic bags, generally I reuse it several times. After all, I could say I make some attempts to reduce my plastic usage, but I wouldn’t say I don’t use it. Generally speaking, almost every product is packed in plastic, including food and drinks. I heard about shops where you can buy products without any containers (you take your own bottles, packages, jars etc.), but there is an essential problem - these products are generally more expensive than those you can buy in each and every supermarket.
Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?
I saw a video which shows such kinds of bacterias ‘in action’ and I would say it might be some sort of solution. The main problem is the scale of pollution and if the population of those bacterias is big enough to deal with it.
Do you know any other solutions to this problem?
To be honest, no specific solutions comes to my mind. I would say we should change our habits and try to reduce usage of plastic and also make some attempts to reuse plastic for producing new things.

1.What is your position on the plastic problem?
I suggest that humans should use plastic as little as possible, although most people know that plastics in the environment cannot be recycled, many people don't know how much plastic is in our oceans and how much harm they have, the growing number of plastics in the ocean affects wildlife and humans.

2.Do you use plastic?
Yes, I often buy a single plastic bag, whenever I went to the store or Biedronka, I brought the same plastic bag until it would be broken, and then I would buy a new one and do the same again and again.

3.Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?
It is not about believe or not, if it is scientifically based, then it will solve, so I hope there will be more scientists to do research in this area and then give us a perfect solution.

4.Do you know any other solutions to this problem?
Perhaps we can start by controlling the flow of plastic products into life, reducing the use of plastic products, and promoting the recycling of plastic products, for example, Biedronka now is using 80% recyclable plastic.

What is your position on the plastic problem?
After seeing pictures of polluted oceans I think this looks bad and that's the main reason for me why it should be cleaned out.

Do you use plastic?
Of course i do, it's everywhere.

Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?
No but it could most certainly help. There is too much plastic to "eat".

Do you know any other solutions to this problem?
Unfortunatelly I'm not that much interestid in the topic to ever give it a thought so for this moment I have nothing.
What is your position on the plastic problem?
Plastic pollution is an unimaginably big threat to us and the entire ecosystem. Humanity should try to reduce plastic production to a minimum or close its circulation completely by introducing 100% recycling. Unfortunately, this is hardly achievable, our species are largely based on plastic and it will be more difficult for us to eliminate its use. At present, we should focus on plastic not getting to the oceans and other natural environments, then reducing its quantity.

Do you use plastic?
Yes I do, it is almost impossible not to use it in the present world. I try to reduce its consumption by using reusable bags and recycling but unfortunately many everyday or grocery products are made or packed in plastic.

Do you know any other solutions to this problem?
There is an Ocean Cleaning device made by Boyan Slat and his research team. The ocean cleanup system is a U-shaped barrier that uses a 10-foot net that hangs below the water to collect plastic as it floats with the current. Fish and other animals are able to avoid the net by swimming underneath, allowing the system to passively collect tons of plastic and debris floating in the 600,000 square-mile garbage patch.

What is your position on the plastic problem?

I'm well aware of the issue and i'm trying to participate in limiting it's use whenever possible. I believe there should be some initiative to clean for example the oceans that are full of it.

Do you use plastic?

Of course, plastic is everywhere and there is no stoping in using it but we can surely limit it's use whenever possible.

Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria / Do you know any other solutions to this problem?

I believe that might be one of solutions to the problem. Currently we have plenty of ideas. Many people out there are using their own bags instead of taking the plastic ones in the supermarkets.I've heard somewhere that even in some countries supermarkets can be fined for using them and there is only a possibility to use the eco-friendly ones. In addition we are also getting used to sorting our trash's and we have plenty of ways to re-use it so I believe at some point we will have even more methods as the one with the bacteria to face the problem.
Kuba Berliński said…
1. I consider this problem as a serious one. People produce more and more plastic each year, which causes harm to the environment. It is to me crucial that people realise that the problem continues to grow.

2. I try to use as little as possible. We cannot avoid using plastic in general, however, we can put a little effort into using less plastic. Instead of buying bottled water for example, we can use filter pots. Since I've started doing it I no longer have to take rubbish out, which kind of means that I use less plastic than I used to.

3. I think it is a great start, but we will not solve this problem until we find an alternative for plastic. The bacteria sounds fine, though they might cause another problems. It is I think to be tested and found out eventually.

4. As I mentioned before, we need to use less plastic, it is as simple as that. Stop buying bottled water and use filtered instead. For a longer term it really makes change in plastic usage.

1. The plastic problem is a very serious problem that humanity must deal with as soon as possible. In my opinion, we should fight with this problem and remove plastic from our daily lives.

2. Unfortunately, I use plastic every day but I try to remove it from my life. However, for example, every drink that has a larger capacity is available in a plastic bottle, so until large organizations give up plastic, it will be also difficult for me to give up.

3.In my opinion, this bacteria can help, but certainly will not be the keys to remove plastic from the earth or our daily life.

4. To start with, companies that produce goods should remove plastic from their products, and then everyone should make sure to use materials other than plastic.
1. I think the problem is huge. Each of us deals with plastic every day, I can't remember even one food item that would not be packed in a plastic package. Most everyday items are made of plastic. Unfortunately, people are lazy and the definition of segregation is foreign to most of them. In the current era of huge consumerism, the problem will increase drastically, and in my opinion we really need firm and specific solutions to deal with the problem of plastic.

2. Yes, of course, probably like everyone I use plastic every day, entering the store you cannot leave it without taking possession of goods packed in plastic.

3. This is the first time I find out about such a phenomenon, it's surprising that someone came up with such an idea. This topic is poorly known to me, I don't know how many bacteria we would need them to eat a certain amount of plastic, or in what environment this consumption would take place. If in any way we can "strengthen" these bacteria and prepare them for mass eating of plastic, then this solution would be ideal.

4. Well, not really. I think the most reasonable solution would be to impose enormous penalties on people who do not segregate waste. Then the level of plastic pollution would definitely decrease. Of course, such an action would have to take place on a global scale, so it's rather difficult to achieve. Campaigns and persuading people to produce less plastic, collecting to clean the environment from waste, maybe in the future replacing plastic with newly invented material that would be environmentally friendly? Who knows?
1.What is your position on the plastic problem?
In my opinion, every action we take in connection with the fight against excess garbage is needed. Every smallest step like lifting an empty bottle from the ground. The biggest problem has particularly poor countries, such as African countries, Colombia, there rubbish is falling everywhere and contributing to greater pollution, but who has the right budget to clean it?

2.Do you use plastic?
Of course I use plastic food packaging, plastic shopping bags because they are cheap, plastic water bottles. Unfortunately, the water in a glass bottle or glass doesn't taste like from plastic bottle.

3.Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?
I don't think this is achievable in the coming years. For this purpose, high financial resources and a large amount of human work are needed, which we currently don't have.

4.Do you know any other solutions to this problem?
Increasing awareness of the problem encountered and, above all, focusing on what is happening today. I mean, cleaning up all the litter around us, starting from our homes and ending in forests and rivers. And above all more public dumpsters. If the authorities stop focusing so much on money and stop require paying for each garbage bag, the cleanliness of our planet should improve significantly.

1: That's a problem. I'm not an ecologist, so I can't claim to know how to deal with it. But realistically speaking, the issue can only have two solutions - economical and scientific. The first one would require plastic production to become unprofitable either through government regulation or the development of new, better, and cheaper materials. That especially crucial for the more impoverished countries around the world that have yet to finish the industrialization process and hence have no means of dealing with expenses that this kind of regulation would require. The fact that these countries tend to have a considerable population doesn't help either. For scientific solutions creating bacteria that would be able to process plastic seems to be the solution, but this is also quite scary if you think about it carefully because even if it works as intended, it is near impossible to predict what impact it would cause on the world ecosystem.
2: Of course, I do. It is almost impossible to not use it in some shape or form nowadays.
3: No, not really. It is nowhere near the first time I hear about the "magic plastic-eating bacteria" but in reality, the problem is still not solved, so I can only conclude there are enormous limitations for this solution that make just theoretically possible at best.
4: I'm pretty confident if you can make finding alternatives to the plastics economically profitable, the problem will solve itself very fast. How it could be achieved is another question entirely, but I'm willing to bet it would require consistent policymaking for prolonged periods, which is something western democratic countries generally struggle to do due to the very nature of their political systems.
1) I agree with the comment above. There are two solutions - economical and scientific.
Shame on me, I've not known a lot about this. I've seen one more video about this and now i think this is very important problem, that we human being have to solve.
2) Yep, food, water. I try use one plastic bottle for a long period of time. I fill it up with water from a nearest water intake.
3) It would be great, but it's hard to imaging when somebody will come up with working idea and samples.
4) Refuse to use plastic containers, bottles etc. things. "If You Want To Change The World, First Change Yourself". "Everybody wants to change the world
But one thing's clear
No one ever wants to change themselves
That's the way things are" Lines from the song "Do You Really Want It?"

1.I think plastic problem is really serious issue that we have to face. If we don't take an action we might be not able to solve it when it will get too big. Plastic is hazardous for an environment and for us too as it decays slowly and release toxic chemicals. We should have enough care for not only our health but also health of future generations and life on our planet.
2.Yes, I use plastic as it is everywhere, but I try to limit the usage as much as possible. I segregate plastic from my waste and buy products with less or no plastic packaging. I saw that there are plastic free shops where you can restore for example liquid soap but those shops are rare and products are very expensive.
3. Yes, but I'am not sure about safety of this method. Bacteria are living organisms so they could evolve in time to "devour" PET plastic in faster rate. If those bacteria would be released into environment they would cause enormous damage. They wouldn't just eat plastic from waste but also plastic in everyday objects useful to us like pipes, car pieces. They would be unstoppable because they reproduce really fast. If safety issues would be fixed I think it would be great solution.
4. Unfortunately,no. Segregating plastic or using it less is a solution, but requires all people to contribute in order to work efficiently.

1. What is your position on the plastic problem?
I think that we should start taking some serious actions about it, but on the other hand my motivation decreases after I realise that the main plastic producers like India or China simply do not care about it as much as the western world.

2. Do you use plastic?
I do, it seems really unavoidable nowadays.

3. Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?
It may reduce the problem, but I think that it is not enough to completely solve it. Bigger and more effective actions must be taken.

4. Do you know any other solutions to this problem?
I have no idea what could help in this situation. I am not really an eco guy, but I support every reasonable methods, like this described above.

What is your position on the plastic problem?
I think that it's a huge problem for ours planet. There are more and more people on earth and we produce more and more plastic packing.
Do you use plastic?
Unfortunately yes. I try to avoid buying products in plastic but it is not always possible. I'm happy that brands are also starting to see that problem and use other materials for packing their products - like paper.
Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?
I'm not biologist, so i don't know what effect such a bacteria will have on our ecosystems. But do we have better options? :)
Do you know any other solutions to this problem?
No, I don't.
The most important is to raise awareness about that problem and educate younger or older people, teach them why and how they should recycle and pick their products.
1. In my opinion it is very important to fight the plastic pollution, but on a global scale. Unfortunately this problem is caused mainly by the countries that don't care anyway, so it will be a very difficult process to fight the pollution. I don't think there is any possible solution at the moment.

2. I try to limit my usage of plastic by carrying reusable shopping bags, choosing unpacked food etc, but sometimes it is impossible not to use it. It is important to properly dispose it when we do.

3. I wish it was possible, but with such ideas only time can tell.

4. The only thing I can advise is to spread the social awareness of the problem. Maybe one day more people will actually care about it.

What is your position on the plastic problem?
I think that this problem is not so much about the plastic itself, but rather the problem of its accumulation and recycling.
As we know, plastic recycling is difficult process and also very harmful, cause of gases that go straightly to the atmosphere. Also human`s factor – greediness and laziness – earn more spending less. And plastic helps with it. But everything is for people, so we`d understand, where garbage`s place is? Not on the street or in the river, but in trash…
Recognition is the first step to the solution.
Do you use plastic?
Yeap, show me who don’t?
Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?
I really was surprised that such bacteria wasn’t created in lab, but it already existed. Of course there are people who work on this problem and I hope something will work out, but I’m not sure, that this bacteria will accumulate plastic trash in one place), its our duty – to keep planet clean, not bacteria`s. Or maybe we can use robots for this..
Do you know any other solutions to this problem?
Hmm… Maybe some digression at first.
Why people are smoking? They know that it harms their health. Simply – they can buy it. If government will make selling cigarettes illegal, where smokers can get their “addiction object”. Some of them will grow some tobacco for themselves, but others will just stop smoking. Certainly government cant stop selling plastic, but it can ban using it in production (i mean in food industry: bottles, packages etc.) Agree, sounds crazy, but
THERE IS NO LOVE, ON DEAD PLANET!

1. I consider plastic one of the biggest enviromental problems. Plastic is everywhere and it is danderous for animals, birds and fish.

2. I use plastic but I do try to minimalise its use. Where and when i can a try to avoid it.

3. I think it one of the solutions but like in the video this might not be enough. there are other means to be found to reduce the pllastic in the world.

4. The most important in my opinion is the awareness of every human. If more and more people became aware pf the damage plastic produce and try to do something more about it. there is a chance of solving the problem on the long run.
1. Quantity of plastic pollution is dramatic. People should learn how to use it less all around the world, not only in EU where the situation isn’t so bad. Even if we reduced the amount of used plastic to the minimum (in the EU), there would still be lots of other countries that don’t do anything about the problem.

2. Yes, but I try to reduce it to the minimum. I always try to use reusable bags instead of disposable. I don’t buy water in plastic bottles; I have a multiuse filter jug. Nowadays almost everything is packed in plastic separately so it’s impossible to completely avoid using it.

3. It surely can help but looking at the scale of problem I don’t think it would be enough. We should change habits of people and companies. Low cost of producing plastic is the greatest problem in our society. Bacteria might be the solution but people in general should start reducing at the beginning and then start to implement new ideas.

4. EU should encourage companies to use PET plastic (instead of the usual plastic), for example by reducing its price. Right now, no one wants to buy PET because it’s almost 3 times more expensive than producing normal plastic from scratch. In other words, we should use plastic as many times as possible, instead of producing more plastic and throwing it after one use.

1.What is your position on the plastic problem?
Plastic problem is global and propably many people about it but it's really hard to fight

2.Do you use plastic?
Yes i use it everyday like any other person.

3.Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?
I think it's possible and it's probably the best looking scenario.

4.Do you know any other solutions to this problem?
I haven't heard about any.
1. It's a problem of a high magnitude that it's difficult to approach and overcome. As it was mentioned in the video, we use plastic every single day. And simple recycling doesn't help, because in many cases, trash companies are not sorting it, so every bit goes in the same container.

2. Yes, I use plastic water bottles, but i try to segregate it every day.

3. It may be possible, the one hurdle to pass is the ammount of plastic for those bacterias to eat.

4. I'm not quite familiar with this topic so I cannot answer this question. One thing to consider is to raise people's awareness about this growing problem
I suppose that this particular problem have reached already critical level. The most dangerous of all is issue that wasn't mentioned in the speech. The micro plastic. When we hear about pollution problem we automatically assume it's about the things we see. The plastic bottle on pavement, non recyclable materials on shop shelves etc. What actually affects environment the most is microplastics that is already spreading all around the world for example in water cycle. The non visible at first sight particles of plastic can travel in air, water, grounds even to places never visited by any people.
It's been confirmed that microplastic is even in glaciers, ocean depths (inaccessible for humans) or inside of human body.

Unfortunately, I still use plastic but I'm trying to re-use it or put in special containers for recycling.

I don't believe in solving such a huge problem with only one solution, no matter how impressive it might seem to be. To achieve anything truly significant we need to join forces.

There is a lot actions favorable to limit pollution. Wastewater treatmnt stations, reducing some plastic uses (replacing plastic with wood, glass or styrofoam), replacing normal trash containers for special ones with segregation especially in places visited by many people. But unfortunately it's still not enough for now. Hopefully in nearest future there will be much more people caring for our planet.

1. I think this is a big problem. However, even the largest countries in the world don’t care enough about it. It would be good if all countries had the same obligation to reduce plastic production and the recycling itself
2. Like everyone. It is impossible not to use plastic. So you can only reduce the consumption of it. There are e.g. filter bottles. You use one small filter instead of e.g. 30 bottles or using bamboo brushes instead of plastic ones.
3. It seems to me that this will not solve the problem completely. But if it can work, we should try.
4. I haven't heard of other ideas on how to remove excess plastic, but rather what to do to produce it as little as possible. E.g. various supermarket ideas for customers to use fewer plastic bags, etc.
1. I think that the problem with plastic and its use around the world is huge. The amount we produce and use every day is terrifying. Plastic is just everywhere. I agree with the statement that Asia has the biggest problem related to plastic production and garbage dumps. However, this is definitely a global problem.

2. Unfortunately, I use plastic in everyday life. When it is possible, I try to replace it with biodegradable products, but sometimes I fail because such products are definitely more expensive and harder to access than plastic ones.

3. After seeing this material, I think the idea of using bacteria seems crazy but not impossible. I don't deal with this topic and I am not a scholar in this field, but in my opinion fighting with such huge amounts of plastic is difficult but we have to try all possible ways to reduce this pollution and its effects.

4. It is very important to raise public awareness and develop joint global action projects to reduce plastic production. I think that it would be a good idea to invent an alternative to plastic, a product that would be environmentally friendly, easily accessible and cheap as plastic. High penalties for excessive plastic production should also be introduced and strictly observed.

What is your position on the plastic problem?
In my opinion, the problem with plastic is the biggest problem facing the population
today. Unfortunately, the actions taken in Europe are ineffective, because in Asia
and South America, due to the larger population and lower ecological awareness,
this problem plays a much bigger role.

Do you use plastic?
I use plastic because I don't think we can limit the use of plastic to zero.
However, I try to limit the use of plastic on a daily basis. Additionally, when
I use plastic, I segregate the garbage to reduce the damage.

Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?
I'm not a scientist, but I think this is really good idea. We can't limit the use
of plastic to zero, so the only solution is to get rid of it.

Do you know any other solutions to this problem?
Unfortunetely, I don't know any other solution to this problem, but I hope scientist
will find something as soon as possible.
I think we can only use more biodegradable products and recycle plastics whichal
ready made. We should also use more natural products, for example made from wood

The problem of plastic is very huge in our world. I am not sure that we could completely get rid of it. But if we will use biodegradable materials and maybe this idea of using bacteria could also be helpful. But I am not sure that I can be judge in this field. Unfortunately I use plastic every day, there are not too much companies which decide to to replace it with another fabrics. It should be great to have multiply methods to deal with plastic problem but first of all it would be helpful if people will start use already known methods.

1. What is your position on the plastic problem? 2. Do you use plastic?

I think that people are not aware of the magnitude of the problem here. Society has taught us that plastic packaging is totally acceptable and we, as a community, should not worry about it. And that is a fallacy. In my opinion plastic pollution is a critical issue, especially in Asia. These “plastic rivers” are heart-breaking phenomena for me. And even though in Europe the situation is way better, we should everything in our power to make the earth a better place.

I do use the plastic. But if it’s possible for me to implement zero-waste rule in my life, I aim for it. In my everyday life I gave up using plastic bottles, I strive to cook meals at home and don’t order too many take-aways, which are always delivered in plastic bags and boxes. I try to remember about reusable bags and separation of waste. I know it can be a little bit inadequate to the scale of the problem in global understanding, but even the smallest step can be effective and lead to a big result.

3. Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?

As microbiology is one of the biggest and differentiated kingdoms, I think that with the appropriate resources and experts it is possible to solve the plastic problem in a while, but it would definitely occupy a huge amount of time, space and arrangements. Considering these are naturally evolved bacteria, and they are in some way designated to consume PET plastic, this could be a game-changing solution to plastic-polluted environment. It would be needed to organize special laboratories, gather suitable researchers and knowledge to achieve this goal, but if these bacteria are “programmed” to do this by nature, I don’t think it’s an impossible goal to achieve.

4. Do you know any other solutions to this problem?

As I am not a scientist of any kind, it’s hard for me to come up with a groundbreaking solution. Nevertheless, I think that spreading awareness and reduction in consumption of all the plastic in general is a good start for finding a better way to cope with spreading pollution in the environment.
Interesting wideo. Answering your questions:

1. I think the plastic problem is very important for the whole world. If we continue to ignore the problem of plastic, we will have a poor fate for our planet. We will live in a world of chemistry, dirt. All animal species will become extinct. We must pay particular attention to this problem, it requires urgent intervention.

2. I use plastic like any other. For now, we do not have full and most replacements for our everyday plastic things. I think it will be the same for the next few years.

3. It's hard to say that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria. It must be scientifically proven and above all practical. Time will tell.

4. I do not think that I'd know any other solutions to this problem.

1. What is your position on the plastic problem?
I hate the idea that we destroy our planet because it is cheap and comfy to use some substance.

2. Do you use plastic?
Only when I am forced by people selling bottles though i try to produce less plastic garbage whenever I have an option.

3. Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?
I believe it is worth a try. It can be a first step or an entire solution to this horrifying problem.

4. Do you know any other solutions to this problem?
Producing less and less plastic every year is a good start. I am no scientist so no other solution I can think of.
What is your position on the plastic problem?
It’s very big problem but if we don’t find something as convenient and easy to use as plastic there will always be problem.

Do you use plastic?
Yes, and I think that I use way too much plastic

Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?
Bacteria is always risky solution they like to mutate… but we can always try who know

Do you know any other solutions to this problem?
Nope if I know I would be very rich person
First of all I think the problem with plastic lies in bad collecting and reusing trash more than producing it. I agree that we shouldn't use anymore one time use plastic bottles etc. I try to use them as rarely as I can but it is extremely hard when everything comes in them. We should think of anther way of distributing, for example, bottled water. I very much hope that this bacteria can solve trash problem at least.

For me it's a huge problem, especially micro-plastic. It is even found in Antarctica. It pollutes every complex living being. It's in air, water and land, you can not hide from it.

Nowadays It's impossible not to use plastic, it's used everywhere, and even if you don't use plastic, plastic has been already produced for you

If these bacteria will be used in a proper systematic way problem might be solved. But actual problem is in humanity, that created most durable material and used it for least durable things, for example: disposable tableware or bottles. So until people don't stop producing such amount of unnecessary plastic and don't change their minds there will be no change. The problem is not in the plastic itself, and bacteria can only solve the
consequence, but not the source of problem.

The most impact can be done by lobbying laws that prohibit producing plastic where it might be replaced with other more ecological materials. Also overall humanity at the level UN should create a law system for plastic usage, to influence or prosecute countries that pollute earth the most.

1. The plastic problem is very serious. The end is ahead if we don't deal with recycling.

2. Unfortunately, I can't stop using it. Plastic is everywhere and you can't give it up.

3. I'm not a scientist and I don't know anything about it. However, I hope that wise people can handle it.

4. Developing recycling and influencing Asian countries. The biggest problem is Asian countries that do not care about environmental pollution.

1.Plastic problem is an important danger for our planet. Huge amounts of plastic pollutes oceans and seas posing a threat to sea animals. Plastic is almost everywhere around us. Most of products that we can find in shops have plastic packaging because it's convenient. We can find molecules of plastic even in our drinking water. It's a good thing that this problem is publicizing because it makes a chance that more and more people will became aware of its harmful effect and maybe try to reduce amount of plastic they buy and use everyday.

2. I use it. It's hard to resign from using plastic at all, especially when almost everything is packed in plastic. Plastic is not a perfect invention but it's convenient and thats why it's so popular with consumers and producers. For example plastic bottles are much lighter than glass so it's easier to take them with you when you go out.

3. It's a very interesting idea. Amounts of plastic we produced and still producing is huge so these bacterias could be really helpful. People as far haven't managed with this problem so maybe bacteria will.

4. We have to stop produce as much plastic as we do now and we should use more reusable materials. Very important is also educating people about plastic problem beacuse less demand lead to reducing production.
But all in all the problem is mainly in Asia and it's them who should be punished for polluting the world on the largest scale.

1. I think this problem is in the top 10 worst problems and it's nearly impossible to completely solve it.
2. I try to not use plastic as much as I can. But in most cases I cannot do anything with this.(e.g. Milk/water/juice bottles, yogurt cups etc.)
3. I think this is the best way for this problem. Its maybe the cheapest solution with zero waste in result. But this method has one big problem - it very slow.
4. I can imagine the bunch of different methods, but they would be inappropriate for two main reasons: huge waste of money, rebuilding whole production industry from scratch.

My position is actually irrelevant unless countires like China start to do something about pollution. Europe already made so many changes for climate and still pressures for more while we are the smallest contributors to that problem. I do use plastic because sometimes it is even healthier than alternatives. With right way to recycle it is not such a big deal. Idea about bacteria is quite interesting but i do not think it is really a life plan. Like i said, if China wanted to cooperate, it would get so much easier to find a fix to this problem.
Thank you for your interest in that topic. I want to mention that, of course Asia produces the majority of plastic waste, but Europe also produces and uses a lot of plastic product. And we can make an effect on it. I totally agree with you at point that such people as Morgan Vague are doing much more for our planet that orators like Greta Thunberg.
I agree that supermarkets don't give us an opportunity to not use plastic at all. I think that it is possible to use Boyan Slat's invention in a cooperation with those bacteria could solve the problem of plastic pollution.
Anna, thank you for your position in plastic usage. You are right that if we don't stop using plastic, this problem couldn't be solved. But also we have to solve the problem with plastic waste that already exists.
Piotr, thank you for your comment. I can suggest you to use your own cap for coffee, for example, and to bring with you your own bottle for water :)
You mentioned that, first of all, companies should stop producing goods in plastic package. It is a great point and I totally agree with you.
1. What is your position on the plastic problem?

I think we should reduce the use of plastic in our everyday life. Because plastic is the past few years has become an enormous problem and we cannot solve it so easy.

2. Do you use plastic?

Unfortunately, yes. I use plastic every day, but I try to reduce t's usage.

3. Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?

Those bacteria could be useful, I think they could help us in a fight with plastic. I think, they cannot solve all the problem, but at least we are moving in the right direction.

4. Do you know any other solutions to this problem?

Unfortunately, no. I hear, that we should use less plastic, produce less plastic, but nothing like this.
1. I think plastic is a big threat to our environment, so we should do everything to reduce its use and waste associated with it.

2. Yes. In my opinion not using plastic would be very troublesome, just look around, plastic is used everywhere

3. From my point of view it is possible but we still have a long way to go.

4. I think that a good idea to solve this problem is public education about the wise use of plastic, recycling and further work on innovative solutions that will help us in the disposal of plastic waste as well as reducing its use.

What is your position on the plastic problem?
Well, the plastic problem is not only stack on one person but it's a global issue that exists for years, we and my roommates are trying to do our part and separating the trash just like what is a must in Japan. However, many people are still not considering this as an issue. So, I don't know if a small touch may help for not turning the planet into plastic in the future. I hope it does.

Do you use plastic?
Unfortunately, yes.

Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?
Maybe.

Do you know any other solutions to this problem?
A few months back I have heard an idea which pops up on kickstarter.com, I team was introduced a way that was clearing the ocean without even touching it, that was pretty good, because, unfortunately, we evils using it and then throwing it what ever we want including the other living areas for livings "into the ocean", people are either just acting blind or don't care for helpless animals that dying with no reason everyday! I really wish that kind of ideas will soon help us to get rid off this big issue...

1. I fully agree that plastic is very polluting our planet. It's like a time bomb. By the way, humanity is the biggest problem on Earth. But what can I do, as one person on the planet, other than collect plastic in one place? I think it would be more effective to solve this problem at the initial levels. Why is the production of plastic bottles not controlled? Why are manufacturers allowed to sell products in plastic packaging? What do consumer protection commissions, environmental commissions and others do? If a manufacturer wants to produce a product in plastic packaging, let it be recycled by manufacturer. And in the amount he needs for packing his product. If he doesn't want to recycle plastic, let him put his product in glass, paper (although the problem of cutting down trees on Earth also exists), tissue or finally maple leaves.

2. Unfortunately, yes. But I try to sort the garbage.

3. I believe it. I like this idea very much. Food is what you need all the time, which means that plastic is always in demand for this bacterium. All we need to do is get the bacteria to eat only plastic, maybe by changing its DNA.

4. I know that certain types of plastic are used to make prostheses. I think it's a very cool application for a durable nonperishable material.
1. I am of the opinion that plastic has long evolved from a cheap, adaptable, easily obtainable material into a considerable environmental threat. As the numbers of plastic pollutants increases rapidly, there's no doubt that some measures must be taken, even drastic ones to curb this problem.

2. I must admit that I do, as it's ubiquity cannot be avoided. However, I try to reduce the amount of plastic that I use, buying those products that are in recyclable containers such as paper or glass. I also sort the rubbish my household produces.

3. Surely, the task of solving the problem seems overwhelming, but I am confident that thanks to the work of such scientists as Dr Vogue it is feasible.

4. Recycling is, in my opinion the most effective way of addressing the problem; until a better technology can be found, that is. Having said that, as the general populace is a major part of the problem, us being the users of plastic materials, I believe proper, pro-environmet based education may play a crucial role in dealing with the issue
1. Plastic is the main enemy of our planet, if I always have the opportunity to segregate it.

2. I use it because it surrounds us from all sides, e.g. water bottles, phone covers, electronics / household appliances, car parts etc ...

3. I think that if such a bacterium existed it could reduce the amount of unnecessary plastic on earth,
I hope they don't start mutating :)

4. Using glass bottles, using paper straws, using metal straws, segregation
1. What is your position on the plastic problem?
The problem of plastic is growing all over the world. Most concerns poor countries such as Thailand or Nigeria. People there are not aware of the ecological and do not realize the right consequences for them and their children.

2. Do you use plastic?
Of course, I use plastic on a daily basis. I just buy products that I like and unfortunately, they are in plastic boxes.

3. Do you believe that it is possible to solve the plastic problem with these bacteria?
I think it is possible. I read about it a few years ago. However, Bacteria are still used to a small extent. I do not know why it is like that. Maybe this solution is not effective enough. I believe that soon people will find a solution for a pile of plastic rubbish.

4. Do you know any other solutions to this problem?
You can reduce the use of plastics and find an alternative raw material. This is not an easy task. However, I believe that this will be achieved by people. You can also create better plastic and reuse it like glass bottles.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
