Week 1 [07.10-13.10.19] Ant War

Kurzgesagt is a YouTube channel that provides science related videos with funny and enjoyable animation. There is plenty of content and I definitely recommend giving them a try.

1.  Have you ever heard about Kurzgesagt?
2.  Do you thing that material created this way is easier to learn?
3.  Did you know that there is a war on that scale right under your nose?

Comments

1. Yes, but only because it was present in something around a half of short posts on this blog last semester. I had not heard about it before, but those materials are interesting and fun to watch, so I am glad they’ve appeared here.

2. Yes, definitely, because the form of these movies is much more important than the content. Colourful visualization and engaging commentary make it attractive. It is infantile, so I wouldn’t use it as a reference in a scientific publication, but just for the purpose of personal curiosity it is a perfect source of basic knowledge.

3. No, I didn’t. I know absolutely nothing about the life of bugs. It must be frustrating for people who are experts in that field to know that probably no one around is aware of such things and don’t even care.

1. I've seen this channel during the last semester on this blog but never heard of it before that. Someone does a brilliant work doing these videos.

2. It's definitely presented in a way that is appealing for a viewer - it's short, filled with information and has nice animations. It's definitely a good choice for those who like to noncommittally learn some stuff from time to time.

3. I didn't know about that. I've had bad experience with ants so I've never been interested in they life, but it's fun to know about such a war.

1. No, I haven't, but I'm glad you showed it to me. It covers interesting topics in an enjoyable way.

2. Yes, of course. This way of depicting scientific facts makes them easier to understand. By using colorful videos author grabs my attention. It's hard to get bored while you' re watching a cartoon. What's more it's the best way to spread scientific knowledge to people who doesn't want to spend hours on specialist publications.

3. I knew that ant's are fighting with each other, but I wasn't aware that this war is on such scale. I also didn't know that there are so many species of ants and variety between them.
1.No, I haven't, but I saw this video in my recommendations and I'm glad that I watched it.

2.Yes, of course. Right now people don't have time to read long articles about such things or watch a 2 hour documentary. 10 minutes of your time is not so much and the way of showing these information is also very intresting because instead of showing some boring videos, we've got a cool cartoon!

3.Didn't know that it is for such scale. As a kid i was intrested in bugs life but I never heard such things like this.

1. Have you ever heard about Kurzgesagt?
I heard about Kurzgesagt for the first time last weekend. I was looking for important and difficult topic which would be explained in a really easy and interesting way. My friend recommended me this channel. I enjoyed the communication, animations and voice of the speaker. Finally I find out what topics I want to discuss on this course.

2. Do you thing that material created this way is easier to learn?
I think I answered to this question in the first point. For me this way of learning and passing knowledge is enjoyable and effective. I hope that some day that kind of learning will be implemented in schools in learning program.

3. Did you know that there is a war on that scale right under your nose?
I had no idea about ant war, but it is interesting information. That's why I really enjoy short videos like this. I can learn, and get to know things without any effort and difficulties. Very often I watch movies like this while eating or making dinner and knowledge is absorbing automatically.
Yes, I have heard about Kurzgesagt. In fact I watched already few of theirs videos and I enjoyed them very much. I think that any educational material is much easier to acquire this way. Normal materials like texts and simple presentations are sometimes boring and not really exciting to learn from. With such wonderful animation it’s just pure joy to learn from them. To be honest I was never aware of such complicated and complex world right under our noses. I mean I know that bugs are there somewhere but I prefer to avoid them because I don’t really like them.

1. Have you ever heard about Kurzgesagt?
I have never heard about Kurzgetsan. I watched some other channels for quite some time but it was mostly about films and not insects or stuff about our planet in general.

2. Do you thing that material created this way is easier to learn?
Yes! I think this type of learning is really good because people stay entertained and because of graphics they will remember what was going on in the video and what it was about. In my opinion this is the best way of learning new things but it's hard to find a good materials like that (videos or even good articles).

3. Did you know that there is a war on that scale right under your nose?
I heard some things about ants and that they are fighting with each other sometimes but I didn't know it was so deep in their way of living.

1. I've never heard abour Kurzgesagt. The video is presented in very clear way and easy to understand. Moreover it's very interesting! I'll watch some another videos for sure.

2. Yes, it is. As I answered in question one, this kind of learning goes exactly to me. I'm curious and fascinated while watching colorful videos instead of spending hours reading scientific publications. In my opinion this is the best way to spread knowledge.

3. I've heard something about it but haven't realized the war is on such scale. I also didn't know there are so many types of ants.
1.Yes, I've heard of this channel and have seen some of their videos. Funny thing is, the video above was the one recommended to me by Youtube the most but I always managed to somehow evade it - not having time to watch it at the moment, forgetting about it later and so on. Glad I've finally managed to watch it - it was interesting.
2. Absolutely, but I think that this format is most effective for presenting small portions of information - the more is being tossed to you, the harder it is to process & remember it.
3. Yes, I think we all are aware of how harsh and cruel are the lives of wild animals - especially the social ones like ants - but we rarely stop to observe them and when we do we usually get fascinated by that world for a short time, then it is enough to lose focus for a moment and we completely forget about it until the next similar "reminder" - after all, we all have our own lives to live and things to do.

1. No, I haven't, because I come from China and Youtube was blocked in China, so I hardly would heard about Kurzgesagt when I was in China. Anyway, such videos are really interesting, if Youtube wasn't blocked in China, then I might have chance to heard about it before.

2.Absolutely, in my opinion it is easier not only for normal people, but also for the scientists, because knowledge is usually very abstract, it is difficult to learn knowledge just by listening, reading and without any pictures in our minds. Such videos doesn't require us to have rich imagination, we can easily understand the theories and how things work just by watching the videos, moreover, graphics can enhance our memory of knowledge.

3. No, I never knew about it, because insect was not any of my hobbies, and it was out of my knowledge, actually I hate ants, once there were around 400 ants in my house and I finally killed all of them after half a year, it was a long war between me and the ants, anyway, now I know more about ant war after watching this video.
1. I have never heard about it, even YouTube does not recommend it to me and it is wondering because these videos are quite popular. Maybe because I'm interested in a slightly different topic and I don't like this style, i mean cartoon.

2. Definitely, i learn a lot of things from videos like that, it is easier to learn something first by reading in book and then watch it in videos. This kind of videos helps to imagine how things works. Any way i think it can help to learn but it can not be useful without real knowledge source like coursebook.

3. Yes, i already know that. I'm surprised that almost nobody didn't heard about it. Ant wars or how beehive works it quite popular topic in kindergarten, and there is a lot of other opportunities during life where you can heard about things like that.

1. Yes, I heard and saw. Very popular practice on our conversion course. It is very convenient from the point of view of training, but also in general for spending free time here. A lot of useful stuff. I recommend everyone to pay attention to this during moderation of the course, it can help a lot.

2. Sure. In this kind of material, many associative aspects are involved. We watch the picture on the video, hear the voice of the announcer, and if we add the presence of subtitles, then such material is simply gorgeous for perfecting language abilities.

3. Yes, I heard about such wars. A very interesting topic, both in the framework of the wars between them, and in the framework of the collaboration. A lot of interesting facts related to the collective mind of these creatures. Who knows, maybe if people started to watch them earlier, then they could borrow a model of their society, and people would come faster to progress. Although now, not everything is so bad.

1. Unfortunately, this was the first time when I saw video from this channel. I found it very exciting and during the watching I thought about is there such different between ants and us, if even after millions years of evolution wars still exists.

2. Material in this form is easier to digest due to the fact that it causes more emotions than the usual text. With this presentation of the material is much easier to realize that it's really happening around you. Very often after reading the text written on paper, information remains only on it.

3. No, but actually we don't really notice a lot of what's going on under our noses, and this is just one example.

1. Have you ever heard about Kurzgesagt?
No, never heard of it before, but i believe i will try to watch at least few more videos made by them, as they are quite intresting.

2. Do you thing that material created this way is easier to learn?
Yes, for sure. It's brief, intresting and entertaining. Perfect form of learning material nowadays in my opinion.

3. Did you know that there is a war on that scale right under your nose?
I knew there is something going on around us or maybe better to say beneath us, but I nerver even imagine the extent of those action. It's very brutal and primitive world though fair as only the best one are able to stand their ground.
1. No, I've never heard of this channel, but now when I'm watching the movie given in the article, I regret it. Right away after this one, I watched a few of their other productions and they all appear to be created in a similar way. I really liked the style of animation, which is definitely characterized by simplicity and minimalism, as well as bright, vivid colors. But not only this is the most important, because the content contained in the materials is very interesting and substantive, and this, combined with trivia topics, creates something unique.

2. Definitely yes, I'm a great supporter of transferring knowledge in any graphic form instead of plain text or words. Words or texts are sometimes difficult to remember, especially when the information is not very interesting. Graphics, however, always attract the attention of the listener and at a later time there is a possibility that someone will associate certain facts.

3. Wars between species are casual thing in the natural world. I didn't know that this is happening on such a large scale and that literally all the ants in this case are so aggressive. After all, I'm amazed at the fact that ants use different tactics against specific enemies. Burying the entrances to the nest, sticking the head into a small gap to prevent the opponent from reaching the larvae, or cooperation on the battlefield are surprising.
1. I haven't, that's the first time I see this channel, which is quite weird because it has almost 10M subscribers and I like educational channels. Quite interesting that this haven't popped out on my YouTube board.

2. Definitely yes. I think that the best way to educate, not only young people, is to combine entertainment with knowledge. This way of presenting information allows to maintain people's attention. I think it is easy to create a presentation or even an educational movie, but it is hard to keep people awake for the whole time being.

3. I didn't know that. Some years ago I played an online game with ant wars, but who would have thought that this is happening in real life and on that scale.
1. No, this is the first time that I heard about this channel and I deeply regret that it wasn't sooner. Videos they prepare are really interesting and well made. I really love style of their animations, they are simple but well made. The way they talk and convey knowledge is very understandable and easy to listen to. I will definitely watch more videos prepared by them.

2. 100% yes, movies of this type make the viewer crave for more knowledge and videos of this type. This type of presenting information makes recipient invested and not bored. It would be great if, in the future, schools started using a similar way of transferring knowledge.

3. I was aware of the fact that ant colonies are at war with each other but not on such a large scale. I was surprised by the sheer number of ant species, their specialized "units" and tactics.

1. No, i have heard about it before, but I am turly happy that I watched it, because it was informativ movie and in addition I am a graphic freak, so this video was to my taste.

2.In my opinion this channel does a good job to share their passion for knowledge and thanks to their distinctiv, colorful animation we have oppourunity to broaden our knowledge in an accessible and transparent way. Moreover it's been proven that colours van be very effectiv in learning.

3. Yes, I have known about it, because last week I saw a nature documentary about ants and other insects that live under our nose. I think that our world never fails to suprise and three is a lot of things that we don't know about animals so I appreciate that scientists devote their life to science.

1. No, I haven't, but I'm going to watch more videos from this channel. These animations are very nice and stimulate the imagination.

2. Yes, of course. These colorful animations attract my attention. I think that short videos like that are better than some long videos or articles. The information is provided in a clever way. In my opinion this is a really nice way to study.

3. No, i didn't. I've heard about ant wars but I didn't realize the scale. People don't pay attention to what is happening on the micro scale.
I haven't heard about this channel before but I can already see I've been missing out. This was such a neat animation. I really enjoyed it. Colours are beautiful and it's very informative despite being so short. Also, speaker's voice is very soothing. I had no idea that ants are in constant war and create societies that complex. I'm going to subscribe to this channel and maybe learn something more in the future!

Honestly it is the first time when i came across with this channel.
I think it is an easier way to remember useful or needed information presented in a funny way. This way of learning involves more senses and they wake up the imagination.
I think there are more than one war the scale right this second.

No, I have never heard of this channel. After watching this film and seeing how professional their approach is to graphics and information contained in it, I will definitely come back to it in near future.
Personally, I really enjoy learning by watching tutorials. If we find a good source of information that only presents important facts, it will save us a lot of time without having to go through the unnecessary informations. In addition, it is worth to note that most of the people are visual learners. If the graphics is interesting, we can remember more from such films then just from “normal” readings or listenings.
Back to the topic of ants, I knew that there was a war between them on such a scale.
1. Yes, I've heard about Kurgesagt chanel. I've even seen some videos before and have considered subscribing but i don't know why i haven't done that back than. It's a greate chanel.
2. There is a lot of information given i a short period of time but the cartoon'ish look make it very nice to watch and imagine how it would look like in the real life. However i prefer to see real life images over cartoon ones so i would rather watch some documentary about ants to further expand my knowleadge. So answering tha question i think that yes it is easier to lern from materials created like this but i prefer documentaries.
3. Actually the biggest suprise for me have been that ants make about 20% of all biomass on land. About the wars. I actually didnt know that ants make wars with one another. I have never thought about that at all so it also was a suprise.

1. I have never heard about this channel, but I subscribed to it just after watching this video about ants. :)
2. It's definitely easier to learn because it is prepared in a very light and enjoyable form. You can watch, listen and make fun at the same time, so it let you remember a lot of stuff with less effort.
3. I am interested in nature, macrophotography and I like to watch about watch documentaries about wild nature and insects in general, but to be honest, I was surprised watching the video. I heard that ants communities are pretty complex, that they breed small beings and cultivations, but I didn't hear about the conflicts between tribes and species. I am really astonished by how complex a swarm can be!
Very nice and funny video. Answering your questions:

1. Yes I have heard about Kurzgesagt and I know that channel. He creates funny and interesting animation on various subjects and tells stories. Sometimes you can find out really interesting.

2. I think so, this created material is easier to learn because it is more vivid, colorful and easier to remember. This is a very good move.

3. No, I didn't realize that there was such an ant war under my nose. After watching this video I was very surprised. I know so much and I know so little.
1. I've never heard about this channel until I saw this post and watched it. This material is very interesting way to explain complicated topics with a much easier methods than plain text.

2. Material created this way is definetly easier, the way author uses animation is entertaining and delivers a lot of informations that are much more appealing in a form of a animated video.

3. Although I'm not interested in life of bugs, I'm aware that they constantly fight with each other.
Ivan Mazuryk said…
1. Nope, but I've just watched a couple of their videos and I can say that it's high-quality content from which you do not fall asleep, as is usually the case with similar content.

2. Maybe it's too superficial knowledge, but you know, I would rather prefer to learn material made in such style than reading boring textbook articles in the case to get BASIC elementary school knowledge.

3. Yes. Have you saw Starship Troopers? If serious, I think we're lucky that ants are so small and we have ant spray.

I think I have heard about Kurzgesagt before from my friends but I have probably never seen anything from this Youtube channel. It was actually good to see something like this because I think it was good quality content.
2. Do you thing that material created this way is easier to learn?
I think that material created this way is easier to learn. It's shown in a nice way and the way of speaking is not boring but rather interesting.
3. Did you know that there is a war on that scale right under your nose?
To be honest I had no idea. Actually this news probably will not change anything in my life but I like learning new things so that's nice to know.
1. I got to know this channel on the last course, but I haven't heard specifically about this thing.
2. I think it's a good form of borrowing for teens, the movies are made in a visually interesting way. It has very good animation quality and well-matched sound. However, I would not treat it as the only source of information.
3 It was never a topic that interested me, so naturally I didn't know it, but in my area of interest there are all sorts of reptiles.

1. No, I have never heard about this channel before. This is actually quite suprising for me as I enjoy watching science related videos like this and I would expect to see some materials from the channel in the recommended YouTube section.

2. I am more than sure about it. One is always more likely to pay attention to graphics than to plain text. Combining high quality visualisations with great problem description/explanation is basically the key for creating the best learning materials.

3. I am aware of this outstanding micro world amongst us, but I am not a big enthusiast of topics like this one. Although I knew that insects and bugs fight each other all the time, I did not realise that ants are also so active in this field.

1 No, I haven't heard about this before. The material is very interesting and informative. It allows in very easy way to understand the world arround us.

2 Yes, I think it is a great idea. Creating educated material like this helps to remember much more information. The material is similar to children's fairy tale, it conveys the most important but also the most interesting information of ant world, which causes interest in the recipient. The most surprising information for me was that there are so many types of ants in the world.

3 I had no idea about that what is happening in the ant world. I think it may by true, bacause as it was indicated in the material, there is a huge number of them so it leads to the fact that they must constantly fight each other.

1) I've never heard about this Youtube channel, till I see your presentation. I'm surprised that exists such an fascinating channel, because in this way is easier to learn and understand science.

2) As I mentioned before, in answer on previous question - I think this is a great way to both teach people and learn some science stuff. Author of this video made colorful and bright animation that helps to visualize all the science information and viewers doesn't need to be familiar with terminology of specific topic. From the other side, I think it's not a good idea to refer to such a video as a scientific article. This is more for people who just want to understand a particular issue.

3) I didn't know about war between ants. Moreover, I couldn't imagine that it is on such scale. But it was impressive to watch this video and I liked the comparison of beetles with people.
Frankly speaking, I got to know this channel on this blog a year ago. There were a few interesting topics, but I never went deep into this channel.

I think so. Interesting graphics and a pleasant voice of the narrator make even the most difficult problem easy to understand and learn.

I knew so, maybe not in the world of ants, but I used to watch similar material about bees and hornets. I think that on the micro scale there are many more such wars, the world of insects is still not completely discovered.

1. Have you ever heard about Kurzgesagt?
I've never heard of him but I've seen similar cartoon-like science videos online o in TV.

2. Do you thing that material created this way is easier to learn?
There are plenty ways of teaching and i think it's definitely easier to learn via visualizing for some people as there are different types of learners.
It's certainly good to have such a good source of visualized knowledge available but i always prefer to use a couple types of learning.

3. Did you know that there is a war on that scale right under your nose?
It's no surprise to me that ants have their wars. It's in animals nature and it's also a part of evolution.
1. Have you ever heard about Kurzgesagt?
No I haven't heard about them before and I really regret that.

2. Do you think that material created this way is easier to learn?
Yes, I think it makes learning much easier. The video was very interesting and engaging. I really enjoyed watching it, graphics were nice and narrator spoke clearly. The topic itself was also unusual and quite new to me so that might have been another cause of this video being so fun to watch.

3. Did you know that there is a war on that scale right under your nose?
I had no idea about the scale of this war. I knew that ants fight each other but I didn't know that those wars are so huge.

3. I’ve heard about it, but I had no idea about the scale of the war.
1.This is my first contact with Kurzgesagt materials.
2.In my opinion, the method of presentation has a big impact on the reception of materials. The recipient's interest is the key to success.
3.I did not realize that there are so many kinds of ant in the world that are constantly fighting each other.
No, I have never heard about this Youtube channel before.
For me this kind of material is less valuable than more usual documentary educational videos but I find videos like the one created by Kurzgesagt channel very important in making science more accessible.

2. The information delivered in this form can be easily transferred to a real-world example. Explanation with visual representation forces your mind to connect pictures with data, which is a more effective way to remember some info than reading plain text.

3. I like to walk in the forest and do it very often. Sometimes I've noticed some fights between ants but never realized the scale.

I also believe that such channels make people motivated to learn new interesting facts about the world around us not only with the help of these channels, but also by reading books and watching documentaries. 1. Yes, I have been following Kurzgesagt for a long time. I find content of this Youtube channel interesting and worthwhile.
2. Yes, I think use of bright colors and beautiful animation makes subject more appealing and easier to learn. Also you are not overwhelmed by information because video is short.
3. No, I wasn't aware of it until now. It's amazing how such little creatures like ants have really complex behavior. What is more, now I'm eager to study behaviour of other species. Nature is really unpreditctable and beautiful at the same time.
1. I have never heard about this channel before. This is my first time.
2. The colorful video visualization, music and commentator's voice make you want to watch this video even if you are not interested in the topic. It was very enjoyable to watch and I am actually excited to see more videos from this channel!
3. I heard something about it, but I watched this video with such interest and creeps at the same time. Life as an ant is not easy. Now I will look at the ants from a different perspective
1.Unfortunately, I haven't heard of it. Thanks to your presentation I have already met :)
What can I see from this? The stories on this channel are told in quite an interesting form.

2.I think materials created in this style are easier to understand and easier to remember.

3.I knew that because I breed ants myself and I'm interested in it. Ant breeding seems strange but it's worth trying your hand
1. I have never heard about this channel, but I find it very interesting. I have watched few videos and they are really enjoyable to watch.
2. I agree with this statemant, that material created this way is easier to learn. In my opinion the animations makes this kind of video more interesting and it is easier to understand the topic when it is ilustrated.
3. I didn`t know anything about ant wars before i have watched this video. The scale and aggressive behavior between this species is suprising for me. I always admire ants for their hardworking and strenght, now I will look on them in different way.

3. I had absolutely no idea about it. Then statistics in the video were quite shocking to me. I would never expect that there even are that many ants. 1 250 000 ants for each human seems just crazy to me.

1 & 2. It's first time I hear anything about such channel, but I don't browse youtube too often as I see it kind of as waste of time. But I have to admit - this video was good beyond my expectations. I was sure it will be some boring ants video. What it truly was, was slightly educational video with amazing animation. I'm not sure if it is easier to learn from material created such way, because information have to be really concentrated to keep it short and simultaneously contain broad range of it. On the bright side, even if making such video requires a lot of work, I bet it's much easier to interest someone in topic, he's not really keen of. To be honest, I think I'll watch part II about ants (and maybe other videos from this channel in near future) after I finish commenting blog posts as deadline is approaching very fast :)

3. I was more or less aware of how ant life looks like, but I wasn't aware of the scale, amount of different species and tactics they use.

1. I’ve never heard about this channel, but it looks like it’s my type of content :) I’ll look it up.
2. Two hundred percent yes! It was already scientifically proven that graphics, charts, just generally visualisations help us remember information easier.
3. Well I saw ants fighting for food once. I don’t know why I was bored so much I paid attention to it. But after watching this video I imagined those armies with like generals and commanders and stuff. Like “Gentlemens, today we’ll attack the enemy army which is based 3 meters north under the trash can. Our scouts informed us that somebody threw out the whole loaf of bread in this trash can, and it’ll be enough provisions to feed all of our families for weeks!” And the ant-wives are crying and waving them goodbye... What?

1. Have you ever heard about Kurzgesagt?
No, I hadn't seen it, but it seems to be a rather ubiquitous type of content on youtube even though it is rarely so well made.

2. Do you think that material created this way is easier to learn?
I can understand why some people would consider learning this way as more entertaining and engaging compared to more traditional teaching methods, but I still have to express my skepticism on the practical efficiency of this approach in concern to teaching more advanced knowledge. Even though the information presented in this way is very easy to digest, its density is extremely low. Unless you are using it for entertainment purposes, spending 8 minutes to learn something you can read in 10 seconds is very inefficient. But it can be perfect for the kids because they generally have a very short attention span, and hence it is necessary to use more efficient ways to keep them engaged.

3. Did you know that there is a war on that scale right under your nose?
I believe it was a part of the middle school's biology curriculum, but I never bothered to pay the attention the insect's world may deserve.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
