Week 13 (15.06.2015 - 21.06.2015) Divine

Two months ago went to the theater to see a performance written by Peter Quilter which is called Divine. This show told the story of Florence Foster Jenkins who was the most popular… untalented opera singer. She was born on July 19th, 1868 and she was the daughter of an influential banker. Despite the total lack of vocal, musical talent and not very attractive features she dreamt about soprano singing. Florence loved music and she wanted to be a star. At 17 years old she had the first attempt performance before an audience. Her good intentions and a huge desire to be a diva were not enough. She has become a laughing-stock of million people. Despite the fact that her father categorically discouraged an opera singer career, she was stubborn and she did not listen to advice. Shortly after the death of her father she launched her first gigs which were entirely funded by property inherited from her rich father.

The performances of Florence Foster enjoyed great popularity. Crowds came to her concerts and the audience laughed their heads off during falsify outstanding arias by well known composers. She tried to diversify her performances by dancing and performing strange looking facial gestures which she diligently put on during the singing. Gathered audience laughed and the artist pretended not to hear anything and she did not realize the low level of presented art. With a smile on her lips she bowed several times to the audience.

She also loved when the amused audience rewarded her performance with thunderous ovation asking for another encore. She often came down from the stage to the dressing room where she dressed up in different clothes and next she gave another show. Among the group of her admirers were Enrico Caruso and Cole Porter. She became the symbol of the sentence that it is worthwhile to fight for your dreams.

Florence died on November 1944. By many critics named her “The worst opera singer in the world”. Her artistic achievement is a CD with arias of “The Flory of the Human Voice” in which you can find 12 tracks. This is the most popular:

I just don't understand. Why people listen to something like that ? :D The whole world knew that she can's sing but they were still comming to her concert :D Well right now there is a lot of popstars that can't sing but they try to cover it. I really can't understand the world of music :D
I am not a huge fan of this kind of music and at all I am not following all artists. As I can see this person was nominated to the title of ‘the worst singer in the world’. I did not know that such title exists and people are nominated to it. All I can say that at least she got any title and is known after her death. I am just wondering why she hasn't improved her musical problems after so many years of practicing. She has been either very untalented or did it in purpose.

As we can see even with absolutely no talent and skills we can be famous. It is also similar nowadays. I remember few years ago the song “Friday” by Rebecca Black. This is similar story.

That's a pretty interesting case. It seems like nowadays there are more people like her that want to be famous no matter what and with no apparent talent and they truly gain popularity, at least for a short while. I don't think that she represents the sentence that it's worthwhile to fight for your dreams, she seems to have been a bit socially maladjusted or just extremely naive and sheltered if she truly thought that people liked her singing. It's actually sad that everybody made fun of her and she acted like she was loved by the audience. Furthermore she rather represents the notion that you can became famous and perform with completely no talent only because you have the resources to do so. Dreams should be accomplished with hard work and talent and not in spite of talent just because I have the money and I can doesn't mean I should ceaselessly follow unrealistic dreams. She had the money, she made a CD and she fulfilled her dream, that's nice for her and I'm glad for her but I still think it's really sad that people made fun of her and she seems to have been extremely unadjusted and had unrealistic expectations of life. But maybe as Cezary mentioned she did it on purpose? From your article I've got an impression that she unfortunately didn't.

That's pure nonsense, but not the first and not the last to be observed in the society :) We have pretty similar situations happening now, but for examples with some pop singers. Popularity doesn't necessary come from talent :)

To be honest I really feel jealous :D I mean, not many people have that much courage to fulfil their dreams. She definitely did and I guess it has made her life so much better. Better than only dreaming on achieving something you really want to do. There are not many people who are so determined, we rather act totally different – we are really good in doing something, but we are too shy or we don't appreciate our talents, so in a result we don't want to show our work or we are not proud of it. I think the case of Florence might be a wake-up call for all of you to start value our skills and start believing in ourselves :)

I agree! Florence seemed to be very determined to make her dreams come true. Of course, her voice is weak, but on the other hand, she found her audience, she made them smile and made them laugh. It's very important to have a distance from yourself.

That's very curious. I don't get it why people attended her concerts. Ok, they probably did that to laugh, but I don't understand what's so funny about a person that sings terribly. It's fun for a moment maybe, but listening to that continuously is an unpleasant waste of time. I just don't understand this kind of entertainment. But yeah, I agree with Marta, popularity doesn't equal talent and we have a lot of examples of celebrities nowadays who match this situation.
Funny story, and the funniest thing is that it was obvious that she doesn't posses any talent whatsoever, maybe the floor treated her recital as freakshow and that was the only reason to see her.
I wouldn't be jealous, she was pathetic, but she probably never understand that, people laughed at her. In my opininon she is a very sad example.

I don't agree with your opinion that "deams should be accomplished with hard work and talent".We don't have guidelines how to accomplish our dreams. What about people who have got money which they earned by hard work? Money are only means to achieve the aim. The most important for me are tenancity, diligence and self-belief. This story told not about famous, popularity because she didn't do this with motives "to be popularity", she did it because she dreamed about it. For me it is beauftiful example of person who lose any asleep and who had great courage to realize things which she loved. Most people are afraid to realize dreams and all the time care about opinion "what people say".
Unknown said…
You're right that title does not officially exist but in music society and culture used to say that she is "the most popular and untalented opera singer". And I agree that the money facilitate to achieve the aim. But for me this story told about firmness. You can see this show here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpAf5PmBOiM.

Yes! I agree with you Natalia in 100%!!! I'm so happy that you understand very well the sense of this story. And Robert, for me is very sad that people do not have courage to realize their dreams. Popular sentence told that it's better try and regret that regret not trying. And it is worth to ask why we realize dreams? Not for popularity, not for money. Money are nice bonus when we have got talent and people like our "art". We realize our dreams because we want to be happy and we want to feel a sense of accomplishment of our life.
Unknown said…
But for me today people often do it for popularity, not for realize dreams. This is sad truth.

Haha, your article is very amusing and the song at the end is a cherry on the cake;) I didn't think that she would be that bad.
On one hand she really might be a symbol for "fight for your dreams" sentence. Almost nothing stopped her from doing what she really loved and she must have been a very happy person.
On the other hand - come on, get real! People are paid for doing something they actually CAN do and other people benefit from their services. This is how the world is supposed to work. And Florence is just another example of a rich girl with too much time who is following her caprices and delusional fantasies instead of being of use to society.
I also like to sing. It helps me relax. But I have a little bit of modesty and self-criticism and this is why I sing alone, when only my cats can look at me and hate me even more.
"better try and regret that regret not trying.". Yes, she tried many times and it was fun. Those guys are funny as well : D : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwy4nT16VAk or he: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISKAeXAS5Zw&t=9m16s but I think they got their lesson right : ). If she didn't have any money she couldn't sing "professionally", in my opinion it's the right indicator that she shouldn't do it.

Oh nooo…. So now I`m really in a fix. Theater and theatrical performances are not in area of my interest. Long time ago I watched “The swam lake” in Sala Kongresowa in Warsaw. This show gave me enough power to live without theatrical events until now. I think this form of art it’s not for me. Perhaps someday I will try again. Thanks a lot for your presentation but I don’t have enough experience in this case to leave more valuable comment…

It is shame but I have never heard about her. Her story is dramatical but such a little funny. I'm listening her now. It is horrible, awful. I can't listen it. I don't understand from where come her popularity.

They told her she could be anything so she became a soprano singer :).
Your article reminded me about one swimmer from Equatorial Guinea who took part in Olympic in Sydney. Here you can watch short video from this performance:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rqI8xwXVac . I haven't heard about this Lady before but for sure, she might be a symbol for "fight for your dreams".
I read a book about her once, really interesting once. I think it is great that she had a hobby and a money to follow it but I really don't understand how she didn't hear how awful she sang....
Unknown said…
Unfortunately, I have never heard about her before. I must say, she really sounds awful. On the other hand, she proves that you can achieve everything you want ... as long as you have a big inheritance from your father.

Maybe she didn't want to hear it:) Good article. I've read some stuff about her too. Great example of how people can connect their hobby with making money
Good article. That's a very interesting person, I wonder if she really didn't admit her shortcomings as a singer to herself or maybe she knew what she was doing and it was some kind of a parody. Either way, she was doing what she loved and people wanted to watch it. It doesn't matter what reasons her audience had - the show was successful. She wasn't hurting anyone by her singing.
I don't think we should remember her as a very bad singer. Her performance was not worse than average, it was actually better... just in a different way.
She is perfect example that we should follow our dreams against all obstacles. I just wander weather it was the goal she wanted to achieve, but I must admit, she was very brave ;)

I believe that if you really want to do something and it is the only way to make you happy, you should do it. In my opinion it is very good that Florence continued her carrier without any shame. Our world needs some untalented people so we can really appreciate geniuses :)
Also you have encourage me to see the Divine performance :)

Sounds a bit like a story of Ed Wood, possibly the worst director in history of cinema. His movies are so bad that it's worth seeing them. From time to time they are even screened at our academy by dr Jacek Rokosz. Because why not? ;) On top of that there is Tim Burtons 1994 movie surprisingly titled "Ed Wood" staring Johnny Depp and Bill Murray. In contrast to Ed Woods work it won two Oscars.

Well, I think that Florence satisfied the social hunger of something strange, bizarre, which was always in the people mind. Revolt against fixed standards, a bit like a distorting mirror reflecting conservative principles prevailing in the opera. Today this type of entertainment provides us with universal access to the Internet and in it any quirks about which we can dream of. :)
Just like Oskar, this presentation reminded me of Ed Wood.

To be honest, I have mixed feelings about that. On the one hand, her singing is funny, of course (maybe I should start my own music career, I have a feeling I would sound similarly bad :D). On the other, it's kind of sad - woman who thinks everyone admires her, when in fact they laugh at her. I wonder if she pretended she didn't notice, or she really didn't? Probably we'll never know, but it's really sad to think she might have realised that.

Anyway, it's great she achieved her dream. However, if she had the money, it would be wise to take some singing lessons first. I've heard that if you have a good teacher, you can learn to sing even if your voice is bad.

I think it is a shame that somebody without any talent is allowed to perform in front of a huge audience. I think that people should be more self-conscious.

I admire people who are so determined and have so much will power to reach their goals that absolutely nothing can stop them. Maybe it would be better for some, if they listened to the opinion of others, but I guess as long as they're happy? I myself would never attend any of her concerts, listening to couple of seconds of her singing was more than enough... I guess I can say that I'm glad we have autotune these days....
I think we can see the same effect here as in Idol/XFactor or any current shows of that nature. There seems to always be an audience for people that humiliate themselves thinking they've got the talent, in this instance the talent for singing.
It's nothing new that people will buy tickets to see other fail at whatever they are doing.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
