Week 13 (15.06.2015 - 21.06.2015) Viennese Waltz

I would like to present you my greatest passion which is dance. One of the most popular and the oldest dance style is Vienna Waltz. Imagine: colorful flowing ball gowns, tails, a ballroom full of people and beautiful music. It is a wonderful atmosphere! Let’s go there with our imagination!

1.  Briefly about history…

The meaning of waltz has its origin from German word ‘walzen’ which means to roll, turn or to glide. Vienna Waltz has its beginning in the suburbs of Vienna in the alpine region of Austria. Firstly, waltzes were played in the ballrooms of the Hapsburg court in the seventeenth century. In the middle of the eighteenth century in France the allemande form of the waltz was very popular. Allemande form is a lively triple-time dance related to the waltz. The waltz was strong criticized. Rapid turning movements and holding each other closely meant that it was regarded it as vulgar and sinful according to religious leaders. England was a stark example with waltzes accepted even more slowly.

2. Costumes

Women wear long ball dresses with long gloves. Men most often wear black, smart tailcoats or modern suits.

3. Steps and music

The Viennese Waltz is danced in a fast triple ¾ time in a closed dance position. Compared to typical waltzes which range between 30-90 beats per minute, the Vienna Waltz is typically in the range of 120-180 beats per minute. Because of the faster pace it makes it a bit more challenging to perform. The basic steps for the Viennese Waltz are:

1) The natural turn to the right
2) The reverse turn to the left

The change of steps between turns allows you to change directions while still following the line of dance.

The most popular music compositions was created by Strauss and Russian Dmitri Shostakovich (e.g. Second Waltz).

And what about you – do you like dance? What is your favourite dance style?

I can't dance :D It is hard a task to teach me how to dance :D In my previous school I was dancing Waltz but that was a long time ago. I avoid dancing because I'm too shy...
I can’t dance as well but I heard about Viennese Waltz because of "Dancing with the Stars" tv show. It must be very taught to practice it and very stressful to perform. I admire hard work of dancers and that they are so brave to do it publicly. Personally I had never chance even to try but I guess I would not be good at it.

As I can see from the article the history of waltz begun hundreds years ago and at this time it was a standard to know how to do that. Nowadays it is not so popular, there are no longer occasions to perform it. We do not have ballrooms parties and barely anyone from our friends know even basic steps.

I like dancing but I don't know how to do it well. Anyway I still like to watch people dancing (of course those who actually know how to dance unlike me) and I admire the physic and the years of hard work that dancers put into their passion. I think that ballet dancers look extremely cool, here are some really nice photos of dancers:

http://interrete.org/jaw-dropping-dance-portraits-by-alexander-yakovlev/

The photos you've shown are really nice. I always thought of dance contests as a really shoddy events with people with fake tan and ugly costumes. But it seems that Viennese waltz balls look really elegant and nice. It's definitely a bit old fashioned but I would still like to see (not necessary take part in it) a ball like that if I would ever got a chance. Anyway it kind of reminds me of Spanish Riding School in Vienna where special breed of white horses perform.

I don't have a favorite dance style. I used to go to flamenco and salsa classes for a few years. I was really interested in Spanish culture so that's how I got into flamenco and I still think it's a very expressive and cool dance style, a lot of tap dancing and other cool variations in it. Anyway I really enjoy watching modern dancing, jazz and modern ballet and I would say those could be my "favorites". I really like the way that this girl dances :) :

I really like to dance Viennese Waltz and I hope I will find more time during summer for dance classes. I love the videos you posted and would like to witness such performance one day. Classy :)

I remembered how I learned basic steps of Vienesse Waltz, this is the one dance style which I can dance. It seems to be simple thing, but you're a half of couple, so it's important to have good partner :) I regret I never attended for dance classes. I wish to make up that someday. I love watching proffessional dance, it's beautiful.

I love dance, you know it :) Do you remember our physical education? ;) My favourite style is latinoamerican style: salsa, samba, jive but I also really like standard dances.
Viennesse Waltz is beautiful, I think that it is one of the most beautiful dances. By the way, dancers costumes are beautifull. Women could fell like the star when they are wearing dresses for example like this:

What do you think about it?
And music is always beautiful. Uhh, I'm dreaming about beautifull Viennesse Waltz. It is so beautifull, so elegant.
My imagination let me go for a beautiful bal.
Have you ever heard it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpEoMe4a0IE ?

Ohh I know this dance! *proudness* BUT REALLY I don't remember any occasion I could possibly dance it! I am not sure but there is a tradition to dance it on your wedding? Heh :P
What about you? Have you ever danced viennese waltz outside the dance class? :D

According to dancing in general – I rather don't like it :P I prefer not to dance haha So it's quite hard to say which one is my best one, especially when you don't have much occasions to dance somewhere else than dance floor in the club :P I guess it would be really weird to dance vienna waltz there :D
I tried that few times, once I even got it right : P. I can't dance, but I plan to take ballroom dancing or other type of dancing class in a future, but it needs to be class of utter failures at dancing as I am.

You should belief to yourself! It is true that dance requires a lot of courage and body awareness. If you like it you should just try! :) Maybe it takes times to know your body but according to me it is worth because it is useful in other situations in our life.

Yes, I agree with you that it is very taught to practise and very stressful to perform but only to people who are beginners. Professional dancers are dancing for themselves, they don't feel stress before the audience or they don't think during dancing about steps or movements. They feel the music and just flow... :)

Yes! I wish you find more time! It is classy! Look here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQzc79qvAGU :) It is magical!

I agree that the good partner is very important thing in standard dance styles. He must to "carry on" dance and he must to be determined in his movements during dancing. It is very important because of feeling confidence to your partner.

Yes! I remember very well our physical education lessons :) I love jive, samba too, you know it. In latinoamerican styles i'm in love with jive in particular.

Regarding to the music I heard and I love it. I've got chills when I listen it! Look at this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoS1_CRS5fA&list=PL29C30DF582C0AE52 ! This one is my favourite :)

Dresses are divine! Professional dancers may feel like a princess :)

Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to dance Vienna Waltz outside the dance class e.g. on dance tournament but... I really would like and I would like to be professional dancer in the future :) I wish it!

Wooow! Photos which you show are... nice and beautiful! I love it! Thank you for showing me this photos :)

Regarding to dance contests I know that a lot of people during watching this kind of show feel that it is so patetic and affected. I think that dance has got a lot of templates and it is close in it a little bit, especially - standard dance styles. But for me dance give me freedom feeling, I feel a music in every part of my body and I love to express my emotion by dance. Ballet dancers (I had ever dance ballet but I know basic figures) are beautiful but we should remember that this kind of dance has got figures and fixed movements too. The figures in dance allow to characterize him but don't close it in the transmission. We can recognize dance by the movements or steps but it is not everything which comes in its composition. For me each dance is a story... :)

The music and dance of girl in Sia clip is nice, I know it and I really like!

Viennese waltz is my favourite of the classic dance styles! As the matter of fact, this is the only one I remember, I learned it in primary school. Thanks for your presentation:) Viennese waltz is so elegant and graceful. And it is surprisingly easy to learn - maybe this is the reason why it is one of the most popular styles used for "the first dance". And well, I just realised that I meant english waltz all along. But I have just read that they are much alike, only the viennese one is a bit faster. I enjoyed the Stanford video, even though they don't look like professional dancers. The whole routine and the fact that there are a lot of them makes up for their lack of experience. I like looking at people dancing, maybe it's because I can't dance at all and it is impossible for me to learn how to do this. I don't have this needed coordination of my upper and lower body, I can focus on doing a routine either for arms or legs. But I don't cry over it, I'm trying to develop some other skills.

Thanks for your link to the photos, they are truly amazing!

I recommend this video, this is a Ukrainian ballet dancer performing to "Take me to church" song by Hozier. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-tW0CkvdDI

Whole dance sphere is out of my league but I really like to watch a good performance. What can I say about Viennese Waltz? In my opinion it is the most beautiful dance style that i`ve ever seen. Maybe Tango is comparable. I`ve never tried to dance in those styles, but when I`m looking on people who know how to dance its really emotional and I feel like the love is in the air. I`m here only like a guest but thanks for interesting presentation. Congrats

Yes, yes, yes, I remember your love to jive, you was a crazy :P
You're right they may feel like a princesses. It's like live in the fairytale, amazing and charming :)
Your music is beautifull but very known. I like it but I preffer less known music ;)

I wish I could dance... My dance resembles more Chandler's Dance :)) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P78Y8jq4_KQ
One day I'll sign up to dance school and I learn to dance.
Viennese waltz basics are not that difficult, even I am able to dance somehow. I like watching (and trying just a little bit) Rock'n'Roll dance.
For a year or two I've attended traditional ballroom dancing classes. However, that was in my primary school, so I don't remember much. I still remember the basic steps, though :)

I'm not really into dancing right now, but I really appreciate watching ballet dancers. I try to go to Teatr Narodowy whenever they play something I haven't seen. I think ballet is beautiful, because it can show the whole story just by movement. Plus, the decorations are always just perfetct. If someone hasn't been there for a while, I recommend going there :)

Honestly? I really can't dance. But i really liked your arcticle, asppecialy Stanford Ball video you have posted. It looks amazing. I would love to be there, even though as I said I can't dance. Those dresses, music... it is so elagant, like in the old times in XIX century Europe.

Everybody likes dance. Or at least everybody should. A few years ago I attended dance course. Viennese Waltz was my favorite just after Quickstep. It is quite simple and very beautiful dance.

Waltz always seemed to me as the most beautiful and elegant dance. I would love to learn it. Unfortunately, I am musically untalented. I attended some dance classes and it was a total disaster. However, my parents have taken dance lessons for seven years now and it became theirs hobby. They were inspired by Dancing with the stars TV show :D Maybe there is still hope for me :)
I'm not a big fan of dancing but I it doesn't mean that I dislike it. I can dance but very poorly. I just feel a little awkward that I repeat the same moves over and over again. I always think that it must be boring for the person I dance with.
About the controversy - it's really hard to tell if such accusations are justified or not. Of course it seems ridiculous when we compare it to our modern customs, however I think that recently our society is so focused on sex that it's not so good for us. I mean, we have problems with children having sex very early and other things. It had to start with something and escalate. I'm not saying that this dance is the source of our problems, I just think that we shouldn't just disregard such objections too easily.
Ah and I'm also not saying that sex is a bad thing, just that the society is focused on it.

I don't think I'm a good dancer and I've never practiced any specific type of dance, but when the music and company is good I don't mind. Though I probably look silly. ;)

Viennese Waltz looks very elegant and sophisticated. I really like the performance in the last video you have posted. It's impressive how they can maintain the tempo and order of movement while still being so graceful. They truly deserve the applause.

It is fascinating that traditions such as Viennese Waltz have survived the test of time and are still popular. In my opinion, ballroom dance looks maginificent and sophisticated but unfortunately I can’t dance very well. I may think about some dance classes though wink emoticon

Thanks for the article, I'm not a great fan of dance styles, cause of the rules in that. Even when I love to dance, or cook just without recipes :)
Anyway it was nice to learn something about this subject.

To me Viennese waltz is the most beautiful of all dances. It was also my favorite one when I was taking some dance classes. It's just so elegant, romantic and effective that the basic steps are still stuck in my head. I would like to learn other classical dances but I never have enough free time, there's always something higher on my priority list.
I'm really bad at dancing, although I appreciate it very much, both as a form of art and as a healthy hobby/entertainment. Unfortunately, nowadays when it comes to classical dances there are hardly any events/places that you can actually put those moves into use, although I just may not be familiar with them. Are there such places / events for people wanting to dance in the classical styles?

I really like dancing. I learned ballroom dancing, dancehall, electro boogie and very long ago break dance. It gives me pleasure. Morover I love music so dance is perfect way to spend active free time.It can give us a lot of fun. I think that dance is a kind of body language. We can communicate without words with other people.

I was dancing Waltz but that was a long time ago. I really like this dance. I think that despite the slow movements it shows a lot of emotion. I think this is one of the most beautiful dances.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
