Week 5 (13.04-19.04) Master of one or jack of all trades?

People expect from us to be great in every single field, but we all know it is impossible. And here comes the question, it is better to be an expert in one narrow filed, or be a jack of all trades and have skills in every discipline?

The first question that I have asked myself was: how can you master a skill when you don’t focus on one thing that you are really into? Imagine what you would achieve if you only paid attention to what you really wanted.

That was actually my first impression. But then I thought that it’s only one side of the issue.

There is a phrase that responds to my problem:
"Jack of all trades, master of none,
Certainly better than a master of one”

I think that it’s good to know fundamentals of some fields, you somehow belong to. For example, when you run your own company, I think it is not really necessary to have perfect accounting skills, but it is good to know how it works and what is important. But when it comes to more precise elements – it is way better to have a professional accountant to deal with it.

As I am a graphic designer I will recall an example connected with this field. How much easier it is to talk to the client who knows how the industry works, who knows what current trends are or that in Photoshop you simply cannot “turn an elephant around to see its front”.

Moreover, it is way easier when you have at least some additional knowledge to express your ideas better, more precise. It also helps you appreciate more things, because you understand them better.

I think that the golden mean here is to master a field that you want to be an expert in, but still be open to learn new things from others or in your free time. Unfortunately we have very limited time and we cannot learn everything we want to. So still, we need to make a choice.

What is yours? Are you more into mastering one field or becoming a jack of all trades?

I know there are advantages of being a master of one field but I would much rather be a jack of all trades. I'm aware it's good to be "the best" in your profession and try to know everything there is in your field but I've always had various interests and I couldn't give them up to do just one thing. In my opinion there are so many interesting things to know and learn and if we limit ourselves we might never know one of our true passions. I would much rather see for myself if I do or don't like something then not to try at all. My parents also showed me different stuff and allowed me to do what I wanted, thanks to them I was in a choir, musical school, painting course, I tried different sports and now I know what I like and I'm glad I had a chance to learn things in different domains because I think it's good to know various things.

As far as my opinion is concerned I think that nowadays we live in times when it is difficult to focus just on one field in life. Firstly, because there are so many fascinating things we can do so it is hard to choose only one concept to master it. Secondly, because people (at work, at school) demand from us to know at least a little bit about everything. When I think about myself- I am a world curious person who still looks for this one thing that will give me this unbelievable pleasure so I will be determined to adapt it. On the other hand, I think I will never be able to decide and concentrate only on one subject. After all why should I do it if there are so many wonderful things on which I can work? I would love to be a film director and producer, a food stylist and a graphic designer specialized in packaging and identity branding. How can I choose one if all of them seem simply amazing to me?

Yeah I have similar feeling! There are just too many things I want to try, it is impossible to focus only on one!
But here comes this awful question – is it possible to master all of the things that you mentioned? Or you can only be master of one to be the "real master"? I think that when you focus only on one narrow field it's simply getting boring, so it's cool to have something interesting that might be stepping stone for your main skill :D
Unknown said…
Yeah thats true, I think that my parents also did great job, because they showed me so many different things, I have similar experience! And I think it really broaden borders, it might give you ease in the future to be more open to different things :)

I agree with Dominika Suszek. Nowadays it is really hard to focus only at one area of life. I admire people who are doing a lot if things and even if they are not great at this, they work really hard. When I was young I was doing a lot of things. I was a type of person that can’t focus on one thing. I try to focus only at one thing but I always look at others and try to do something new. Nowadays we have a lot of opportunities than 20 years ago and we can try everything. In my opinion we should try what we want and not only look at one thing.

I think it would be very hard to focus on one thing only.

Besides that you have to focus on things directly interfering with you daily activities, you also have to focus on activities to care about yourself - meaning your physical and psychological health.

First of all it would be very boring to focus just on one thing in life. It would maybe make you an expert in this field, but you would also be dumb in other areas. You could easily become a boring person. Moreover it would be unhealthy for you as for human being to
push yourself to do that.

The other reason is many things in real life require focusing on other things and topics. It is simply not possible to focus on just one area, as there are many others related. Understanding one area deeply means you also have to posses knowledge going beyond just that one area.

And the last idea is that life is too short and too long to do just one thing in your lifetime. On one hand you could always practice the same thing, but in my opinion every field can be mastered in the duration smaller than your life span, and it would not require 100% focus all the time. It would be just too much.

I’m rather a jack of all trades. I like doing things that are slightly different. As an IT specialist I can’t imagine myself working with the same technology all the time.

It’s hard to say what is better. It depends on discipline. If you are musician it’s highly recommended to be master of one. But if you work in industry when technology changes all the time is rather better to be jack of all trades.
Unknown said…
Yeah you're right ;) But I think in IT is is good to know some other languages, but you have to master one and you mainly work using only one, is that true?
Unknown said…
oh that's a good point! We like to talk to people who has broad knowledge, in many fields that's true! And when you focus only on one thing it really might be easy to became very boring...
Are you more into mastering one field or becoming a jack of all trades?

I am still open to every opportunity but currently I am mastering web development in ASP.NET-MVC. As you stated this is important to know essentials from multiple domains if you run your business to not let your employees cheat on you.
IT specialist suppose to have broad interests, besides it is healthy to not specialise in IT only. For instance if all computers blew up all of the sudden I would run a pro bicycle store. Even if computers are safe if you work for company like LUXMED and create web service for them you need to know more than thing or two about the health business.

I guess the golden mean is to be the “king or queen” of all the things that interest you ;)
Unknown said…
Sounds reasonable :D
I think it's the case where you have more than two options to choose from; it's not 'either master of one or jack of all trades' with no in-between. In fact, in real world everyone's somewhere in the middle - closer to one end or the other. :)

However, I think I agree with most of the people's comments - it's the best to be good in some field, but not to limit youself to it. You can't predict the future - maybe in some time you'll need to change your job and use different skills?

Besides, I agree it would be extremely boring for me to just pick one field and stick to it - I would grow tired of it very quickly.

I agree with your opinion. It's important to know the basics of various fields that are overlapping with your specialization. This broader knowledge facilitates communication but also gives you a better perspective. Personally I would like to have one area of expertise in which I could truly call myself a master but also my appetite for knowledge needs to be satisfied hence the need for exploring other subjects.

I would like to be a pro in all the things I really love doing but unfortunately a day is too short to do all of this stuff professionally :) I choose some of these and really put a lot of work into becoming a person who knows a thing or two on the matter. This makes me something in the middle between a master of one and jack of all trades, I guess :)
I totally agree it is really hard to devote to only one thing. I would like to do all thing that interest me. I can appriceate when someone is really interesed in only one thing and is genious but if he/ she doesn't knoe anything about other things / matters it is really hard to connect with such person.

Dominika, Natalka what thing would you like to do and try?
I wrote something really similar abouve. Being with a person who is only interesed in one thing, even though she/he is a genious at it pretty hard....
It is all true, I agree with you. But on the other hand I start to wonder if people would focuse on less thing maybe they would be better at them. What do you think?
Unknown said…
I am definitely more mastering one field. Of course I am desirous to learning other new things. I am open to „fresh” knowledge and always want to broaden my horizons. I think that this is really impossible to be a jack of all trades. Generally in my opinion people who are expert in every field for real know nothing. Smart people say that I know that I know nothing because knowledge is too big to memory everything and to good practise everything.
I think that it's depends on the aimed target, because for example when someone want to be good manager or CEO he must have knowledge about all aspect of what his people are doing, this knowledge not necessary need to be really big, but that kind of people should know something about all. In the other hand if your target is to be specialist you should concentrate on that branch of your interest and develop to maximum potential. Personally I am trying to gain knowledge about couple of branches like IT, psychology, finances etc. which may help me in reaching my personal goal.

It's hard to be a master in one field. People are expected to know a lot about different things, and even when they're not expected, they soon find out that they need to be able to do a little bit of everything. For themselves only.

I believe it's better to be a jack of all trades and, if you have an opportunity, try out everything you can throughout your lifetime. This way you can find out what is really interesting for you and what you're good at. Even if you won't be an expert, you still get to learn important things, something that will perhaps change your life someday. And if not, at least you'll have some cool stories to tell! :)
Unknown said…
Haha that's a good question :) I think that I am quite fulfilled now (and I don't have time for anything more ;( ) but I would love to learn something more about print and dtp :) What about you?
Unknown said…
Exactly, for example, when I had teachers at school it was really weird to have the same teacher for math and english. It was just weird and I was wondering if it is possible to master two totally different things that good, to teach them.
Unknown said…
Yeah it is really hard to compete as a jack of all trades with someone who has devoted his life for the one thing...
Unknown said…
Of course number of things to master is crucial to decide if we can master them or not :D but sometimes the choice is too hard :(
Unknown said…
Which area would you choose? :)
Unknown said…
Everyone keeps telling that it is better to be jack of all trades, but imagine you choosing someone - a doctor, teacher, someone who you would like to dedicate your new project... You don't want to go to the doctor who is a dentist, heart surgeon, orthopaedist (unless you have problem that covey all of these fields haha), you don't want to be tough by someone who is master in mathematics, physics, biology and music because you know how hard it is to master that much areas ! and same with the project - you need brilliant illustration? You simply go to the person who is the best from your friends in drawing, and the best person is someone who devoted his all carrier to this particular graphic design area :> What about this point of view? Do you agree?
Unknown said…
I totally agree with previous comments, people shouldn't focus only on one field, but they should develop widely and buckle down to their favourite thing. I'm trying to keep this rule!

My grandma used to say "If you are good in everything, you aren't good in anything". And i completely agree with that. Currently there are so many areas of konwledge, that its imposible to be good at more than 3 of them (if you arent Sawant). Socrates said "I know that i know nothing" - becase he was aware that for a single man its impossible to be good in every field. But its good if you are interest in more than just your job
Unknown said…
I'd rather be a jack of all trades. Of course it is very honourable, impressive etc. to be one of a kind (I've recently read an article about the only specialist in Poland in a field of fixing polcelain and ceramic dishes with liquid gold), but I think it is a bit safer to know your way in numerous fields - it is easier to be flexible and even change your line of business if necessary. Another thing is that it is also very impressive to be a person who knows everything and is capable of doing a lot of different things;) I don't know why 'know-it-all' is such a negative expeession. If you are educated in many similar fields, you will be able to run some complex undertakings and fully understand your employees.

Oh, and I also think that polish education system has been designed in a way to make children educated in many different areas or at least get them interested in something. I hope it will be developed and reorganised to make this really happen, not just to be a theoretical program.

I find your question quite hard to answer, of course it is impossible to be a master on every field. In my opinion the best option is to find one or two areas and become master in them but very important is not to limit
yourself only in this areas. It is important to be well-read, it's very broadens to our horizons. Good practice is to change your job max in 4-5 year. It gives you opportunities to develop your skills, you won't get bored.

Mastering something is a very long and difficult and (very often) doomed to failure process. Therefore rather than answering is it better to be all-around skilled person I'd say this: it's important to better yourself continuously. Breaks allowed of course, yet always more goals to be still in front of you. Never lay still, always move forward ('cause, relatively, if you decide to stop and stay, you'll fall behind!).

I think they both are hard. In my opinion master on one field has very boring life :P His work is always the same. But I unfortunately agree with Agata: “expert in every field for real know nothing”- expert in every field in real is an expert in nothing. I also agree with Izabela, I would like to do all thing that interest me. Unfortunatelly we have only one life. Lately I’ve said: “ The time is too short” and I think that’s totally perfect definition our life.
I think that I’m rather “Jack of all trades, master of none,” I think that is neither good nor bad.
I think that mastering one field is the way to go. Having said that, the most important thing in my opinion is resourcefulness.
At work, even if you work in your field of expertise, you will very often find yourself out of your comfort zone and you just have to be able to handle those situations.
It is of course useful to have knowledge from other fields, but I don't think you should spread yourself too thin.
Best way in my opinion is to master (or at least try) one field and gradually educate yourself with fields related to it or fields that are helpful in your career.
The education system wants us to learn a little bit of everything without really mastering anything. I personally don't like it. I agree that it's good to have general idea about many things, but there is no point in learning much about everything.
You will just forget useless information really fast. On the other hand if you learn only the basics of important things then you can always learn more as needed to accomplish things you want. Remember - getting the knowledge without it's use later is just a pointless task. We should focus on actually doing things, not just learning things for no good reason just to feel satisfaction that we 'know everything'.

I think that the best solution is to combine these two aspects. It is hard to achieve but it gives you the security of the labor market. You never know when you need to change to another industry.
It often happens that a vast knowledge on various subjects may be helpful in solving the problem of a specific field.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
