Week 5 (3-9 November) Smartwatch: The wearable computer

Smartwatch : The wearable computer

One of the most trendy new technology gadgets and a new implementation of the 90s Hollywood movie dreams is the Smartwatch.
These days these little devices are equipped with low powered dual core processors and up to 512mb of RAM memory.. this is how fast technology evolves!

But let’s not get ahead and start with the history first.

The first device that had a common interface to connect with computers was the Seiko RC-1000 Wrist Terminal.. that came out in 1984. It was compatible with most of the popular PCs of that time. The functionality was extremely limited, however, since it only enabled scheduling, memos, synchronized world time and had a four-function calculator app.

It wasn’t too successful, so much that after its release nothing similar entered the market until 1998/1999, when two major devices were announced - the Samsung Watch Phone SPH-WP10 and the Linux watch.

These devices were better developed as they were capable of performing more tasks by themselves - the Samsung watch was capable of handling “phone” talks (although the battery lasted only for.. 90 minutes) while the Linux Watch is still considered the father of wearable computing. It enabled 6 hours of battery life, but ran Linux 2.2 Operating System.

The focus was more on improving existing technology, maximizing performance/energy usage ratio and going lower and lower with manufacturing technology to minimize the size of components.
Between 2000 and 2013 there were several efforts, but none of them was extraordinarily worth noting, and in 2013, which was considered “the year of the Smartwatch”, the majority of new-gen devices have been announced.
Within just a year Acer, Apple, BlackBerry, Google, LG, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba all announced their own smartwatch.
Some of them looked pretty neat, just like this Motorola Moto 360, which is considered to be the most successful (and at the very least best designed) Smartwatch:

If it comes to Smartwatch operating systems, the most common ones include Google’s Android Wear, Apple’s iOS and Tizen - all were adjusted to smartwatches also 2013 and 2014. Now just a few days ago also Microsoft joined with its smart band along with a wearable OS.
Based on the aforementioned we can clearly say that we are observing a Smartwatch boom. But is it the right time to buy a Smartwatch?
In my opinion, it comes down to what your needs are. Currently Smartwatches are evolving extremely fast but are facing severe limitations.
They allow checking notifications, reading messages and launching a variety of apps (although the selection is still pretty limited, mostly focused on fitness). You can also interact with your phone through your Smartwatch without pulling your phone out of your pocket.
The major disadvantage is the battery life of those devices and relatively limited scope of tasks that you can perform with them. Theoretical the battery life is displayed in the table below:

http://images.gizmag.com/inline/smartwatch-comparison-guide-2.jpg

However the real usage might mean you might have to charge your device as often as every day. Personally, I am keen to give Smart Watches a benefit of the doubt and wait and see how things unfold in the future. If the battery life and functionality greatly improves, if there are new, superior charging techs, I will be happy to buy one at that point. For now, the advantages don’t outweigh the hassle that comes from charging an additional device each day (or even every few days).

I dreamt about a smart watch when I was watching James Bond movies ;). However, I do not need it in my life because I have a smartphone, which has almost all the capabilities of Smartwatch. I think it is only a gadget for freaks of electronics.

I am very interested how it is going to work. In my opinion it is promising appliance :) I am totally in love in motorola 360 I agree it is really well designed piece of work. In this case I regret being so apple-devoted :D As long as it doesn't work with apple devices.

Dominika: I also think so, although for some people Smartwatch is an extension of their smartphone. I don't know how convenient that is, since you spend more time charging it than the time you save by not having to remove your phone from your pocket.

Natalia: Long story short, you can read here about how it works with an Iphone:
http://arctouch.com/2014/08/can-android-wear-work-iphone/

I think in the future there will be full compatibility, however.
In primary school I had cheap imitation of smart watch. It had 28 keys keyboard, calculator, notes, memo and the battery lasted for 3 months.
I would like to use a watch instead of a phone but the main problem to me would be small screen, too small to comfortably write text messages.
Besides that I like the idea of smart watch.
It does not have the most important feature: a laser.
I am big fan of Motorola 360 too. The funny thing is that if you simply get metal band then it almost looks like those expensive traditional watches.

Have you seen LG G Watch R. It is round like Motorola 360 but it has better battery. However, It costs almost $300 whereas you can get Motorola 360 for about $250.
Robert, you are wrong. Heart Rate Monitor in smartwatches uses laser :P

No, I haven't seen it :) It looks just like normal watches :D But it is rather too manly for a women in my opinion.
What I like about motorola 360 is that is so simple and clean <3 Lovely :) And it fits either a woman and a man :)

This one? Classy!

I had a same one, although unfortunately there was no connectivity options and it wasn't capable of running apps ;-)

I think that in a few years when they develop these Smart Watches a little better, they'll become really popular. The short battery life is very problematic and is a huge flaw right now.

These are one of the first images that I saw after an Iwatch announcement ;) "The real way the Iwatch will look". I think they fit this topic:

And I remembered a cool project that shows a phone that can be projected anywhere: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pz17lbjOFn8

I'm in love with Moto 360, really! Especially design and dream about buying it some days. I'm quite freaky in this way...I also want to buy google glass as well and all these wearable stuff that make our life more comfortable.
I'm interested in this now, smart rings http://www.businessweek.com/videos/2014-03-25/the-next-wearable-device-the-smart-ring

The most outstanding smartwatch now is pebble, since it uses e-paper screen. Besides it was longer then most watches from big corporations, so it has much more apps and functionality with iOS, android or windows phone.

And i think that idea of holographic things is still out of reach, lets wait for stable "bending" phones.
Unknown said…
Yeah, Moto 360 is the sexiest smartwatch in design at the moment.
Shame it only works with android phones though.

I've been looking out for watches since samsung and sony started presenting their wearables, and when Pebble company begun their kickstarter campaign. (And at that time i believed i was going to buy it, since it had really long battery life and slick design, also it was selling for 400 zł on allegro)
Now i'm less enthusiastic about it, since my only need for smartwatch is to control the music player on my phone that usually tend to be on my pockets and i am too lazy to pick it every time to change songs. Also it goes for massages, since most of a time it is set to vibrations.
I do want Moto 360, like i stated earlier in Svitlana comment, it has sexiest design now, but i am iPhone user so there is no compatibility.

I do love the idea of "smartbands" like that one https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1977264838/moment-smartwatch-worlds-first-wrap-around-smart-w

smartwatch is on my must have list!
I didn't know that is so long list of "smartwatches" from past.
I have one problem with them. battery... for me charging every day smartphone is already annoying enough.

Well that's a fun little gadget... but I don't think I need one. I'd say it's funny that slowly everything theese days is turning "smart". Smartphones, smartwatches, smart TVs. I don't think it's really that amazing, it might be smaller than a cell phone, but really I don't think there is anything more than that.
MartaSB said…
Just like Dominika, I don't think that I really need this kind of "smart" gadget. I have my smartphone and it basically suits all my needs :) + charging a smartphone AND a smartwatch every day? I'm not sure this is something I would sign up for.

Hey, did anyone notice how you all like both smartwatches and green gadgets at the same time? This can't be right, can it?
For me a watch is a watch. I rarely even use stopper or timer, but alarm is neat. I do like gadgets, especially ones that help one's health monitoring and that's the scenario I'd like to see smartwaches or other gadgets shine in. The rest of it is just for showing-off in my opinion.

For me, watch is a device which provides information about current time. All other functionalities of a smart watch are either not important for me, or provided by a smartphone.

As you mentioned, the major disadvantage is battery life. I find watch which needs regular daily battery charging more of a problem than a useful gadget.
I remember the boom in the 90' for watches with a calculator. Everyone wanted to have the this watch, SWAG. Today it will be embarrassing or oldschool, maybe good for hipsters. Smart watch is for sure an interesting phenomenon and shows power of technology. Personally for me the watch should be only watch.

I just love gadgets...and same as some of You I also had a classy, oldschool watch with calculator:)
I think Smartwatches can be quite useful - when your in the middle of a very important meeting, at the gym, running in the park, in the cinema and you can't reach ur phone...:)

I've just imagined how cool we're going to look like in about ten years. We will be talking to watches, looking through google glasses, not talking to anyone, just sending snapchat messages, and first of all we will have that comfort to know what is our current heart beat rate.

Can you imagine people walking through the streets talking to their watches? For me sound at least abstractly

I'm gadget lover and I've ordered Pebble on kickstarter and I use it on daily basis :)

The most important feature of this smartwatch is ability to disconnect call without taking out my phone from the pocket. It's also useful to change the song in crowded places.

It also provides great feedback when running: Using 3rd party apps it can display pace, distance and... actual time of course.
This last feature is really important. I did hear about smartwatches that were not able to display actual time not being connected to smartphone.

Watch should be watch. Smartwatch also should be watch.

I don't think that smartwatches suicide in our market. There are quite expensive and don't provide any remarkable improvements to our lifes. Classic watches for me are more practical in every aspect. Their are just gadgets smartphone's provides for me everything I want, or maybe I'm too "oldschool".

Great idea is connecting smartwatch with smartphone. Faster reading message after receive it, check weather, emails or other notifications. Maybe I will buy one for myself:) really nice gadget to have.
To be honest I have never seen smartwatch for real yet...:(

To me the idea of a smartwatch is a bit... pointless. Maybe it's because I don't follow the latest tech-trends or that I don't like gadgets. I myself prefer to even have my music and my phone separated. We lived well without the constant connection to the grid, without checking the inbox every five seconds, so I really do not see the need for even more technological 'leashes' around our necks.
Unknown said…
I agree with your conclusion. I'm sure future smartwatches would be great, but today the just aren't.

I love new things with battery inside. The idea of smartwatch is awesome, there is quite lot of way to use it but... this little, tiny battery inside... I love gadgets, and I am going to buy one.
Unknown said…
I don’t really like smartwatches… Small battery which need to be charged every day or 2 times per day and this is horrible, huge price, limited functionality - almost every smartwatch need smartphone to work with so for me is too early but still it is another step to create something more interesting in the future for sure.
I love gadget of all sorts! I am a big child and stuff like smart watch are on my whishlist! :D That said, I am aware of the fact that I don't actually need it – that's why I haven't gotten one yet. But if I would have some money to spend I would definitely get a smart watch. I love all these new “smart” things, electronic gadgets meant to make mundane tasks “cooler”. Charging something everyday is not something I am concern about – I can charge stuff when I sleep so it doesn’t bother me at all. So yeah, I wouldn't mind having a device like this right now.

I think it also depends on the needs. E-paper screen saves battery, but some people find it less functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Paulina: thank you for the links. the projected phone idea is nice.

I think the smartwatch can be more if you need or want exactly what it represents - a remote for your phone. It's sometimes convenient, although charging it every day is not in my opinion. I don't think being green is something new. People wanted that for decades now, at least some people.
Unknown said…
That's how I also see smart watches - they show a power of technology, but also the imperfections of.. For example battery technology,

I think that's how people looked talking to their cell phones in early 90s ;)

I saw the Sony one and I really wanna see the Moto 360. I'd like to see whether it looks so great in reality as well.
Unknown said…
sounds like a battery fetish.. No, I'm kidding :D I can understand. I also like gadgets with batteries inside.
Unknown said…
I think alike except of the battery part.. Just imagine taking it off and connecting and disconnecting another device every day.. I am looking forward to more advanced wireless charging ;)
Nice post mate, keep up the great work, just shared this with my friendz

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
