Week 2 [02-08.11] VanLife

Did you ever hear about vanlife?

Many people travel around every place in the world in many different ways, for example they take a trip using a plain, train or even sail a boat and then secure accommodation in the form of a flat or a condominium.

Another popular way to travel is with a big car which is designed to be a camper.

Some people buy ready made equipment while, on the other hand, some people buy vans and reconstruct them to the own satisfaction. As a result, one can have a home on wheels and go where ever he wants and consequently stay as long as he wants.

This video shows a woman who lives this way:

Questions:

1.Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while and again change location?

2.What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?

3.Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?

To some extent, I actually considered living a van life in such a way that will let me travel around the world while still managing to work remotely as a programmer.
It's definitely possible, but it requires an enormous amount of dedication, because I believe one needs to leave behind his or her's previous way of living, and that includes close connections to one's family and friends. Then there's a choice of either buying a camper, which tend to be quite expensive, or building your own from an old Volkswagen Transporter or alike (that sounds like fun!). Then there's the choice of destination and the preparation. Generally, it's a huge process involved that some may call a journey or even an adventure.
But those adventurous people living a van life are not as rare as you might think. My friend's colleagues live a 'part-time' van life. From time to time, a small group of people rent a camper and go somewhere to explore the world. They take their laptops with them and they work remotely from places like Austrian Alps, shorelines in Greece, or some remote plains in Scotland.
I've yet to contact them and ask about their way of preparing and organizing those trips, but I suppose with a suitable group of friends with a similar mindset, it's definitely worth a try!
Yes, if I had time, I would build such a mobile-home and travel from place to place, having some remote work to do. I could not, however, fully replace it with a flat or house. I have some hobbies and I require much more space than such a van could offer.

This van is very well equipped, in my opinion. Whether it is a better option than a camper, I think it is a thing to discuss. First of all, we would have to choose a camper which suits the number of people you will travel with. You don't need a camper for 8 people if you travel alone! New campers seem to be better equipped than this van - take a bathroom as an example. The last thing, we have to mention price - such Ducato transformed into a mobile home will be still much cheaper than a camper.

I did not have an opportunity to sleep in a camper, but I have some plans to do a camper trip with my friends, so we will see how enjoyable it is. However, I have once slept in my car and it was not that bad ;)
I’d like to live this way for a couple of months. In my opinion it’s an amazing opportunity to survive an adventure! Waking up in another place every morning sounds great for me. It’s the chance for travelling to places which are hard to reach like savage South America, Northern Europe or Canada. But despite my traveller’s soul I can’t imagine spending the rest of my life in such a small space.

If I decided to live in the van, I would prefer to convert it into a home by myself. I pay attention to details which create a comfy house. Style of people who formed this “house” may be different from mine.

I’ve never slept in a camper with a real bed but I slept in an ordinary camper. Two years ago I and my bunch of friends made a trip from Poland to Norway by camper. We slept in tents in all nights despite the last night when I slept in the van. Our last days were really tough. All of us love hiking and that was such a great opportunity to try our hands. Unfortunately before we reach a summit it had started to rain and continued through the return journey. When we come back to the camp, I had been sick. That’s way I had a chance to slept in the car. I need to admit it was comfortable and because of fact that I'm not so big, the van perfectly suited to me. 😉
It was always my dream to go across the USA in this kind of fashion. You know, driving hundreds of miles by day, and then sleeping somewhere near the highway in your car or camper, and then hitting the road again in the morning. No fancy food, no fancy hotels, no tour guides or anything. Just you, your car and the road. I think it's mostly because I love driving and it makes me so happy to just go forward, not thinking about anything else. Just enjoying the views and the sound of the engine.

I think this van shown in the video is really nice, as it's as much practical, as it is cosy. I'd probably buy a camper, because I don't think I could turn a regular van to a camper on my own, but I'd really love to make it feel like it's my temple, the place where I can clear my thoughts and relax. It's really important on long drives, to give yourself time to rest and recharge your batteries, as driving can be exhausting, depending on the weather or how big the traffic is.

I've never slept in a camper or a van that had enough space to put a bed in it, but sleeping in a car isn't anything new to me. I've been travelling by cars with my parents since I was 2 months old, and sometimes we did tours of hundreds of kilometers a day. I loved all of it, as it seemed like an adventure to a little kid. I loved driving at night (still do!) and I remember telling ghost stories to my plushie dog I had with me, watching mist covering the world at night, the lights of the car's dashboard reflecting on the front side windows. It had this kind of magic to it and I'd really love to come back to such long drives again. But this time it's going to be even more fun, as I'm going to be the driver.

1. To be honest I wouldn't. I'm the kind of person that prefers comfort and for me that's important. One thing will be to live in an apartment/hostel/hotel for some time but I don't see myself living and traveling in a van for a long time.

2. Well, I think a big role here plays how much of a "handyman" you are😅
If I had the skills and time to renovate a van I would consider that in order to have everything exactly how I want and need it. And I think saying "I've renovated this van all by myself" is already extremely rewarding. On the other hand, it might be easier to get a camper but to make adjustments inside, so that way everything is done professionally but you still have some form of personalization.

3. I haven't but my sister and her boyfriend actually own a van and they even traveled in it for a month for their vacation this summer(thanks to covid it was across the country). And every time when I come to visit them we discuss how cool it will be to travel together in a van(it's also a great way to show the beautiful nature of Sweden) but in order to do that I should stay with them for more than a week which, unfortunately, wasn't yet possible. But I really hope that in the nearest future we'll get a chance to make it happen. Even so, I can't consider living in such a way traveling definitely seems like a great idea!
It's interesting to me that some people can live this way. I can understand benefits from this style of life, yet i dont find myself there. I love my city and i love travel, but most of all i love to call some place a home. It would be hard to stay in touch with all my friends and today (while on quarantine) i see how i miss meating them in person.

Last summer i helped my firend to modify his old Mitsubishi truck. He was passioned about traveling this way. With his girlfriend he drove to balkans and traveled there for 1 month sleeping on prepered bed insted of back seats. They still needed shower and kitchen, but it was enough for sleeping, living and traveling. After this month, they came back and said it is enough for now. Interior of this truck from the video is much more self-eficient than modified Mitsubishi of my friend. You actualy can live there for ever. I we dont look at the cost of everything i would choose a pre equiped camper for traveling, and builded myself truck for living there.

At least once a year i go camping with my friends for a week. I've slept in my friend's Mitsubishi and it was horrbile. Cool adventure, but no thank you :)
I would choose a regular tent and air mattress instead.

@Pawel S. I fully agree with you if we are talking about a complete departure for a longer period. Lack of contact with friends and family can be exhausting. Therefore, as you said, "part-time" seems like an interesting option

I have never considered living in a van and I think that it’s not a good match for me. I like living in a city which might be impossible if you live in a van and change places to stay a lot. Although if I was about to travel or just move near nature I would definitely consider renting a van or a camper to stay for a couple of months. It is surely something that would make a trip like that more interesting.

The interior of this van seems very well thought. There is a place for everything that the owner needs and uses on daily basis. Furniture like in the office space which is made for her to work standing is customized perfectly to suit her needs. If I was about to move into a house on wheels I would like to purchase a camper and arrange it myself. In that way, I would have the proper equipment, like a bathroom and adequate kitchen space, and at the same time, my home would fit my energy and be truly mine.

I have never slept in a camper before but I really like the vision of it. It certainly takes a lot of planning and organizing but I think of trying to travel this way in the summer.
Piotr Marchewka said…
@Marcin W. A big advantage of ready-made solutions is the fact that people who create such campers have access and professional knowledge, which in fact, as you mentioned, allows for better management of the smaller space for an additional room, such as a bathroom
Piotr Marchewka said…
@Milena D. The feeling that a place is like home is really important. Traveling in the long run can show even more that adapting to yourself may turn out to be crucial.

Compared to a tent, a van can actually be very comfortable :)
Piotr Marchewka said…
@Katarzyna S. I think a nice website for you will be https://www.busemprzezswiat.pl/usa-podroz-pwiedznik/
because they show van adventures in the USA there. You can also find USA and vanlife related guides and tips there.

Hope you will make your dream come true in the near future :)

@Paulina. In fact, the convenience is great, especially if you are on a full-exclusive trip where there are interesting attractions in the hotel, such as a swimming pool or sauna.

In this case, let's look forward to the improvement of the situation and I wish you a pleasant journey with your sister and her boyfriend
Piotr Marchewka said…
@Karol S. What made you dislike your friend's stay in Mitsubishi? It is probably not about comfort if you choose a tent instead.
Piotr Marchewka said…
@Karolina R. It is true. The way this woman arranges her vehicle seems to be thoughtful and refined. You can also see that she created it with passion. Its energy certainly fits the interior of the car as well ... :)

I appreciate people who fulfill their dreams and pursue their goals, but I believe that in order to decide to live in a van, you need a vision, a lot of determination and even more courage. Some would like to live in a van, while I would like to have a great house with a beautiful garden where I could feel that the decisions I made during my lifetime were right and led me to everything I have. One of the downsides of a great house is that it cannot be moved elsewhere, but remember that you can buy another one elsewhere. However, instead of buying a house, I would probably consider traveling to places of interest to us, because what may seem wonderful in our dreams may in fact be only for a moment, and the possibility of returning to our environment is the best option. However, if I were to buy a van and live in it, I would probably treat it as a challenge and would like to create it myself. It would be a process which in itself would be an adventure that I would probably mean if I decided to take such a step. I have never had the opportunity to stay in such a motorhome, much less sleep in it, but I think a small space can be a bit overwhelming for some people, although for some it may be the space in which they would feel best.

1. I like this way of life if I watch it on video. Unfortunately, I know that it would not work in my situation in the long run. I am a very static person and I am getting used to the way I live so the nomadic mode could not last longer than a month in my case.
2. The van depicted in the video looks great. It looks very cozy inside and at the same time practical. Everything had to be carefully planned before construction. If I had to choose this lifestyle myself, I would definitely prefer to convert a van into an apartment. I love customed stuff prepared especially for the creator.
3. I've never been able to sleep in such conditions.

Definitely travelling has always been my dream since childhood. I would like to explore new places, experience different cultures and see something that nobody has seen before. Although that I do not believe that living in a van is a thing for me. I prefer the apartments and other traditional accomodations. Moving from a place to place and changing locations is an everyday excitement but I know that someday I would get tired anyway and need to rest. When that time comes I will need a place where I can call it a real home. The motherland and where my family is.
"Only hate the road when you're missing home" sounds familiar, huh?
I would not feel comfortable in such van even with the coziest interior in the world. And another aspect I would not feel safe in such place as well, because it is really easy to break in inside in so many ways. But if you are asking me if I would like to try for a day or two then answer is yes. It could be fun but only for "oneshot".

@Piotr G.
It is true that our ideas about a place or activity may not be what we imagine, so before making a big decision, it is good to test it in some way to get a little bit of what it looks like in practice. In our case, it is nice to rent a camper for example a month.
Piotr Marchewka said…
@Matuesz W
I understand. How about a temporary trip like this? I think that such a combination of a static life and a departure from time to time in a van is more affordable for many people.
Piotr Marchewka said…
@Bui K A
In that case, I wish you to visit every place on earth and new cultures. Getting to know the cultures is very developing, especially when you can live with local people and not just sightseeing. It's worth having an open mind to such things, and as we know, the minds of travelers are open :)

I would change my location periodically only under condition that I would have a several cozy apartments with all the things I need. In general, changing location for me is extremely tiresome and stressful because it is my basic and fundamental need to be able to rest at home. My ability to relax is connected to the awareness, that I have nothing to worry about right now. I am the type of person who hates adventures, trips, hiking and camping. I can be involved in such activities only if I will have guarantee that at night I will come to my bedroom and will sleep tight in a soft warm bed.

It is hard for me to relate to this question because I cannot imagine myself making such a disputable investment. I would suggest that all decisions depend on person’s approach. If someone enjoys creating and building interiors on their own, they should buy a van and use them simply as an empty canvas for their dreams. Nevertheless, if the main goal is to travel a lot, I would advise to check a full equipment camper on the market. They can be more comfortable and suitable for long trips.

I have never slept in a camper or a big car with a real bed. Honestly, I see nothing attractive for me in it. When I have very stressful time in my life, I usually calming down myself thinking about that at night I will go to sleep to my bed. I cannot think the same way about campers or cars…

I think that a good way of exploring the world and generally traveling. I think my parents are bigger fans then me when it comes to explore it from the windows of a van
or camper or a recreational vehicle. I think it's also cheaper than staying in
expensive hotels and flying everywhere, so it's more about the journey.

2.
I think this interior has everything that would be needed for living a comfortable life while traveling. I believe that if someone has the time to do so, they should absolutely turn their old van into a home just as they like it. Buying a full equipped camper is not only pricier, but also we are left with the vision of the producent which might not be best suited for us.

3.
No, not really, I have slept in a car, but not in a car with a real bed, and I don't really know if I would like to experience it one day.

I think that everyone thought about living in a van like that. It's awesome because there are no constraints. I can take my belongings and just drive wherever I want. The well-prepared van contains everything I need: a bed, a little kitchen and well, my stuff. To make this deal even sweeter, my company allows me to work remotely, so a vanlife wouldn't even interfere with my job! I think that's a great way to visit many locations all over the world, without the problems of finding and renting a flat.
If I have to choose between buying a ready camper and making my own van, I think I'd go with a van. On the downside, It'll take more time, but I can customize it any way I want and it'll be much cheaper. Things I'd need in there are: bed, some fixed closet, a desk(even tiny one), a tv/monitors and of course a tiny kitchen.
I had an opportunity to sleep in both camper and a van and I was thrilled in both of them! I really like this small, enclosed space and the beds were really comfortable, pretty much like real ones. To sum up, I'd love to build my own van from scratch and travel in it throughout Europe and beyond :).

This lifestyle is fascinating, constant travel and journey. However, knowing myself, it wouldn't fit me well as I get quite attached to places and like sense of familiarity, space. Maybe I would want to do it for short period of time as an adventure or trip rather than living itself.

The interior is very cozy and I enjoy how the wood was incorporated in it, seeing someone living happily and having their own place is truly heart-warming. When it comes to me, I would prefer to convert the van into home if I decided I want to spend a lot of time in there. Because I think, it is different when you put some effort, invest time and care into something than just buying fully equipped camper.

I haven't slept in a camper or car with bed before. I wonder how it would feel like, since it does sound as if I wouldn't be able to sleep in there, just take a nap at most.

On second thought, I think I'd rather stick to my bed. I'm quite a scaredy cat. :)

1.Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while and again change location?

I wouldn't like to do that. I believe that travelling and experiencing the world is best as a break from normal life. I also a fan of having some things that are not changing and I guess that living in van would be something that would bother me or made me anxious.

2.What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?

If I had to do that, I would probably buy van and customise it by myself to do it in a way I want it to look. I think that it is often the case that campers interior is not pretty.

3.Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?

No, I have not.

1. This idea is super nice but has its flaws... I'd love to be mobile and wake up with an ocean view from time to time, however, there is not enough space in a van to live and work in it. I could live only on necessities and don't own different glasses for themed parties but I couldn't use the VR headset properly and I need for work (and relax of course). It would also be hard to cook in this tiny kitchen; I wouldn't have a place for my bike, because it wouldn't be sleeping outside, and so on. Altogether it is a nice idea, even for a while, but not for life.

2. Well... it is messy and ill-designed in my opinion. There may have been some smart space savers but not enough. If I would going to have one of those I'd love to design it myself, however, complete camper or a trailer would be better for most as it is designed by professionals.

3. Yes, I had. We had a trailer at the Hel peninsula for about 10 years and I spend most my vacations there. It was definitely enough for the summer as we usually grilled outside and for the rainy days, we had Play Station inside! Good times :)

I think some people still enjoy nomadic lifestyle like all of us used to do before thousands years ago. It's pretty interesting way of living, according to the video and other people opinions it can be challenging and not so easy to do.

1.
In my opinion that's a fascinating approach, another day, another place, keep traveling, discovering new places, meeting new people and whats more the cost is quite low, for sure lower than going to a organized holiday. If you want to ask me if I want to live this way unfortunately I would say no. The main reason is work. It would be hard for me to both work, and take care of my van, especially in a city. I think this approach is directed to pensioners or people who are working in unusual working hours or simply have a lot of free time.

2.
It looks pretty good. I think converting a van into a house can be challenging but we can personalize it more, make it to fit us more and of course have one of a kind house-vehicle which no one can buy. Buying "ready-to-live" camper is for sure easier, but also more expensive and maybe not everyone can afford it.

3.
Unfortunately not, but I think it could be a nice experience.

1. Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while and again change location?
I would really love to live in similar way. I mean, not exactly like this because I wouldn't really like to live in a van but I would really love to fly from one place to another, live for about a month or so and then switch place. Having a remote job is amazing opportunity for that.

2. What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?
The van by itself looks amazing but if I had to choose I would buy a complete camper that is adapted for living and driving in a vehicle.

3. Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?
Unfortunately I didn't have opportunity to live in a camper. But my family used to have a caravan in the past and we were taking it every year to the seaside.
1.Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while and again change location?
I don't think that this option is for me. I like travels but when you live in one place for a longer you have some friends and you dont have to live in camper or van. Anyway there is a lot of adventages for some people. You can explore new places and get to know new cultures or meet new people. In some point probably everyone will want to live in some place for longer.

2.What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?
If i have to choose i think camper is a better option. Probably it will cost more but it is more convincing me. Camper could be bigger which gives you more space for you and also you can be there with some people.

3.Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?
Yeah i slept once in camper. I don't know what else should i say here. Sleep is sleep.
Personally, I prefer to live in a more static way, I like to travel from time to time.
I think that frequent travel can be tiring for me. However, if I were to decide to live in a home on wheels I would like to buy the equipment for it myself.
I think that buying ready-made equipment would not be as satisfactory as choosing all by myself. It would be much more fun and pleasant to live in a place that I designed and equipped by myself.
Once I had a chance to sleep in a camper, I think that was an interesting adventure. However, if I were to live in a camper for a longer time, I wouldn't be too eager.
I fully understand people who love this lifestyle and I find it is really interesting.
Nowadays we often hear about people who live on boats or in vans. There are a lot of videos like this one in this article which shows how these people live.
1. That kind of an option is not for me. I like traveling but only for relaxation purpose. The second con is that, that kind a place for a living is small for me. I'm keen on opened spaces like my house so i wouldn't change current place for something like that. It's not just my style.

2. The interior in this kind of home on wheels should be practical. We don't have many space like in 'normal' houses so we have to be creative. Hide some drawers behind walls. The woman shows us a tricky one, like convert bench into bathroom, that was cool. And talking about second question I would rather but a full equipment camper. I know myself so I wouldn't have had willingness to do so.

3. I have never slept in a camper because I didn't have the oportunity to do that. None of my friends have one and I'm not a big fan of sleeping outside.

You both have a very similar view on this. Life this way can be annoying after some time, so it all depends on who likes :)
Life and travel by car, it's still a little not for me, since I prefer a more stable lifestyle, so the constant movement around the country, travel and looking for stops on trips would be a huge stress for me. But I know those who are very fond of such things, so I have nothing against it.

I quite liked the idea of the interior in this video, as it is quite practical and simple. If I choose between making a camping kit myself or buying, then I think I would rather buy ready-made kits.

I have had some experience with camping travel, but since I don't really prefer this type of vacation, there weren't many.

I’m honestly surprised how well-organized living space the woman in the video has. Even if I had such opportunities, I would not choose this lifestyle. I understand the reasons that may encourage it: smaller expenses, minimalism, possibility to travel and increasing awareness of energy and water supplies. I like too much to have a traditional bathroom with a large bathtub, a comfortable couch in the living room and a table in the dining room that can accommodate all my friends

The interior of this house on wheels is admirable. You can see that the owner has carefully thought and planned everything. No wonder, since she decided to live in it permanently. Since I would never want to live in such a van, I can only consider the option of a holiday rental. I heard that this is a great idea for visiting Australia or the USA.

When I was little I have the opportunity to sleep in a camper van. My grandparents own one, much smaller and not as adapted to life as the van shown in the film. When we have gone on vacation with my parents, we've borrowed it and have slept in the trailer for a week.
1.Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while and again change location?

I have quite simmilar approach to life but I couldn't live in a van or car for any sake. I am to comfy person for that but chaning locations is great - It gives us freedom and a whole diffrent perspective of how the World and people around looks like.

2.What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?

Well I am not judging, the guy in the video is really proud about his vehicle-home I would prefer something more fancy

3.Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?

Yes, I have slept in a camper few times - It werent' the best nights in my life but for a short period its comfy enough

1.Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while and again change location?

I would certainly give it a go if I could for like half of a year. It seems like a fun way of living but for sure it has many downsides of which I am not that aware of right now e.g. toilet could be problematic. I would love to travel as much as possible in such way, but I am a little bit scared of doing it by myself. Also, it requires a lot of money to buy and design such van which unfortunately I do not have right now. The last thing which I want to mention is that such way of living can be sometimes problematic, for example in times of coronavirus there are not many upsides of living in a van, you can stuck in some country because of boarders being closed.

2.What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?

I think the interior in this home is beautiful and well designed. It is very functional although being great to an eye. It is shocking for me how much she fit in that rather small van. I would prefer converting van into a home rather than buying a camper because a van is more convenient in matters of driving, it can go much faster and you don’t need to have any additional permissions to drive it. Also, I think it is cheaper than buying camper, but all those advantages come with a cost of comfort.

3.Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?

Yes, I did and need to admit it was not that bad, I think I could get used to it.
1. Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while, and again change location?

Although I love watching people who transform vans into houses, I am not a big fan of living this way. To be honest, I am not sure if I would be able to travel and live in a van for even a couple of weeks. And my whole life? Well, definitely not for me. Due to feeling anxious in such small living spaces, I totally prefer traveling by car and sleeping in „real” houses/hotels. Moreover, I don’t really like changing the place of residence. I like seeing the same neighborhood every day.

2. What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?

In my opinion, the interior of this home on wheels is very cozy. However, personally, I find having a kitchen next to the bathroom (without any walls) very unhygienic. If I had a choice I would prefer to convert a van into a home. I could do it my way and it would also be a lot of fun working on such a project.

3. Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?

I have neither slept in a camper nor in a van with a real bed. I have only slept in a tent and I enjoyed it, so perhaps sleeping in a van or camper wouldn't actually be so bad?
Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while and again change location?
No doubt yes! Living in a flat is boring. We are attached to one place and very dependent on other people, tenants.
It's an ideal form of residence for people working remotely. We become completely independent and free. We can live in a different place every day. The camper allows us to work, for example, as an IT specialist and be a traveler all our life.

What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?
I prefer first option so converting a van into a home. This gives us many benefits, ranging from financial ones. Building a converting a van into a home from scratch is much cheaper, especially if we build it ourselves. The great thing is that we can be creative and create our own design. Every detail with my needs in mind.

Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?
Yes, because in the family we have a car converted into a camper. Our car is much smaller then Ducato from video, but but it's enough for 2 people. The advantage of a smaller car over a bus is that you can travel on the highway much faster and the car consumes less fuel.
1.Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while and again change location?
I have thought about making a van like this myself some time ago. I wouldnt treat a van like a regular home rather i would travel a lot more mostly in spring and summer because of the weather. But for sure i would need to have some flat where i could got back and be in my space.

2.What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?
I like the design and idea behind vans like this much more than the idea of a fully equiped camper. That everything can be done as you would like and for what you need van.

3.Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?
Unfortunatelly i have never have an oportunity to sleep in a van. But looking forward to do this one day.
The first question is something I ask myself every time I have to get up early to go to school or spend so much time on doing my homework or studying. Having a home, which you can drive everywhere, change locations and just explore sounds like a dream to me. Especially, when it looks so cosy and comfortable like the one in the video.

However, I am not sure how it would work in Europe… As the european citizen, who had a great opportunity to travel Europe and visit many countries by car, I feel like Europe is really small, easy to visit and quick to explore. I also feel like we don’t really have a lot of place for Campers. I just don’t fell like Europe and living in Campers go well with each other.

Nevertheless, living in a camper in the USA and exploring american deserts, National Parks and all the nature sound like a dream to me! I was lucky enough to explore American roads a few times, but I always did it in a car and slept in hotels… This made me feel like a normal tourist, instead of a real traveler. I saw a lot of vans and campers and I was always wondering, why can’t I live like that? Why just don’t drop out of school, go to the USA, buy camper and live the best of my life? I guess I am just not spontaneous and brave enough to do it…

All in all, I have never slept in a camper or big car with a real bed, but I really wish I could. I really wish I could buy myself a van, convert it into a home and just explore the american roads.
It is very interesting topic, but for me the idea of living in the car is kinda extraordinary. I do appreciate my own space, my own place. I do like the privacy of the home, but I understand that for some people spending a big part of their live in one place could be boring or even exhausting.

Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while and again change location?

I would, but the question is: For how long? I think that it is a great way to spend vacations, or even a longer period of time, like a whole year. But as I said previously, I do like having my private space, the place I know, the neighbours I can depend on. I think, that I couldn't fully trust the car. This is my 4th year living in Warsaw and even though I finally can find myself there, i have this incredible feeling when I'm visiting my hometown. It's like instant happiness, lots of good memories and people. Actually I would really like to try vanlife experience, but for a shorter time. I could go to a beautiful country, like Italy or Spain or New Zealand and fully explore it, experience the life of native people living there.

What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?

I was honestly shocked seeing this home on wheels. I mean, there was everything needed to comfortable living. I personally prefer bigger spaces, especially bathroom is a room which is the bigger, the better. But if I was intending to live in a van, I am hundred percent sure that I would convert a van into a home. It is giving me the possibility to design the interior exactly how I want it to look. Of course it's involving more work, sometimes hard work, but I do believe that making something with our own hands is developing our creativity.

Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?

Just once, and honestly I didn't like that. Actually the bed was very comfortable, but all the noise... I could hear almost everything outside. If you are not a heavy sleeper I think, it's not the best idea for you to spend a few nights in a car. The wind, the rain, the animals, they can be really noisy and considering sleeping outside you should be aware of them.

One of my passions is traveling so I would love to live like this. It is so exciting, you can sleep and live in any place that you want. If you get bored of one of them, you can just drive away to another place.

I think that it is not very popular in Poland to have only camper without a flat or house. I would rather buy a fully equipped camper than change my home into it. It is really exciting that you can sleep wherever you want but it is good to have a one place which is much safer and only yours. Just like proverb says "My home is my castle".

I have never slept in the camper but this one is on my wish list! I wish I could rent a camper next summer and maybe visit some European cites like Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris or Madrid.

I love travelling, i would like to visit in my life as many countries as it will be possible. I think that a good way of discovering the world. Only you decide, how long and where you are going to live for a while, and when you get bored, you can easily change your plans and move on.

2.What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?
I think, i would like to just buy a full equipment camper, maybe that is why i am not a handyman, and it could take me a lot of time to convert a van. In my opinion interior in campers is sufficient for me and i could live in camper for a while.

3.Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?
I have never slept in the camper, maybe in the future i will decide to visit some countries by van, and then i will have a chance to sleep inside a van.
I’ve heard before about this kind of lifestyle and I find really interesting. Mostly because I couldn’t imagine living in such a small space. The biggest advantage of mobile home is that you can go wherever you want, which is a great option for adventure lovers. Nevertheless, this is a very challenging and demanding lifestyle. As we can see on a video, the interior of a van is really tight, which, after a few months, may bother the resident. For me this aspect is the main cause why I couldn’t live in a van. I definitely need a lot of space to feel comfortable.

I must say that I am really impressed by the interior of this woman’s camper van. It looks really cozy and everything seems to be well–thought. If I had my own van I would definitely turn it into some kind of home. It would help me to feel more homey.

I’ve never slept in a camper but once my friends and I slept in a kind of house trailer. It was four days and I must say that it was a great time despite the fact that we didn't have a lot of space.

I'm certain that living a life like that doesn't suit me at all. Having a real home where you can get back to is really important and even though travelling around in a van might be an interesting experience - it can not be permamanent. It can be considered as a vacation and nothing else.

2.What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?
Getting a full equiped camper is a good idea as it comes with everything I might need. Maybe they even come with more thing I woudn't even expect I needed but on the other hand... The satisfaction of making your own camper and the knowledge about everything that is related to the camper is certainly needed on the road. During unexpected situations you must remain calm and recall all the important things about the camper that you own. Manual that comes with camper can be but doesn't have to be better than your own knowledge that you gained by creating it.

3.Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?
I have never slept in a camper but i slept in the car on the parking lot. It propably wasn't that comfortable as the camper but i considered it as a weird thing as everyone could literally take a look through window at my sleepy face.

1.Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while and again change location?
I think it will be interesting for me to have a trip and live in a van for a few days. It is much better than camp, cause it has a toilet and even a shower. But, I don`t want to live this way during a long period because I am very squeamish and like comfort. It is complicated to change the water, find electricity and change capsule for bio-toilet regularly. Also, there will be no your own space if you are living with somebody.

2.What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?
I liked the interior in this home on wheels presented in a video. It is quite nice and cosy inside. There was even a tiny office for working indoors. In general, I like the idea of tiny houses, it looks smart.
As for me, if I will have a house on the wheel, I would prefer to buy a full equipment camper cause I guess that provide it by yourself with water and electricity is more complicated than to buy a ready one. If you don`t like the interior you can change cabinet doors, paint walls or add decorations.

3.Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?
No, I have never slept in a camper or big car with a real bed. As I have mentioned, it is not my favourite way of having a rest. I prefer comfort and living in hotels. Additionally, I will not feel save sleeping in a car.
1.Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while, and again change location?

I think that this lifestyle doesn't suit me at all. I'm not a person who likes to travel, so I wouldn't like to make a research where should I stay more that once per year. I also don't think that this living style is popular in Poland. I would be scare that someone might break in my van.

2.What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?

I think that buying a full-equipment camper would be much easier and cheaper option. I could add there some decorations, but I'm not a fan or personalizing everything, so I think that living in an already prepared interior wouldn't be a problem for me.

3.Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?

I haven't sleep like this yet, and I don't really want to. It doesn't look as bad as sleeping in a car without bed, but I don't think it's really comfortable either.

I see most of you have a very similar opinion on this. Most people are curious about this idea, but for a shorter period of time. As something that will replace a hotel or a longer trip, but not as a place to live for a long time. I think it is understandable because living like this can lead to being alone or possibly with one person because it is difficult for more people to live in such a small room. Especially if we were to think about starting a family. My next observation is that practically everyone would prefer to convert the bus into their own space than buy a ready van. Adapting a small space to yourself can be very important. Only we ourselves know what our needs are and what climate we will feel best in! Another factor is the price. Even though we will have to spend a lot of our time in order to do such a conversion well, the lower price is also something that attracts people to this idea. In addition, the satisfaction of creating such a room yourself will be huge!
1.Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while and again change location?

No, I never imagined a life like this. Honestly, I am one who appreciates comfort. I like warmth, place, order and so on. In such a motorhome you have to get used to the fact that you always lack space. You don't have a normal bathroom, kitchen. No, I cannot imagine such a life. However, I find it a very interesting idea for a vacation.

2.What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer
converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?
It's hard for me to say. I think the most sensible option is to buy a used van and deliver it to special companies that convert the vans into campers. New motorhomes are terribly expensive, but if you want to make such a modification yourself, you must have the appropriate experience so as not to destroy the car.

3.Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?

Yes, I have fallen asleep. Once we were with friends in Masuria. Unfortunately, I was not very comfortable. When I woke up, my whole body ached, all my muscles ached. Perhaps I am not adapted to sleeping in such places. However, it was nice to be in such an environment, because the morning view of the forest and lakes compensated me for this 'nightmare'. For sure, sleeping in a motorhome is better than sleeping in a tent :)
1.Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while, and again change location?
I like the idea of changing the place I live in but not in this way. I don't want to spend the rest of my life in a van. I can't stand the idea of preparing my food above the toilet...
Although I completely understand American people who choose to live this way. It has been known for a long time that estate prices in the US are soaring and a lot of young people entering the labor market will never be able to afford a house without credit or the support of relatives.

2.What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?
I will take the van just because of a separate bathroom. This lady's interior was nice. I enjoyed the wooden furniture but the entire space seemed cramped and unnecessarily stuffed.

3.Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?
Fortunately not.

1.Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while and again change location?

Actually I've learnt about vanlife long time ago and since then I've probably watched like a hundred of videos on this topic. Sometime in a future I'd love to buy my own van and transform it all by myself (I'll definitely need some help with plumbing and electricity though) into a fully functional campervan. Studying IT was kinda part of the idea since it might allow me to work remotely from every place in the world.
I would definitely leave Poland in winters because I don't like the cold.

2.What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?

I would strongly prefer to convert a van. First of all it would probably come out cheaper and I could design it to fit my needs perfectly.

3.Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?

Sadly I didn't have the opportunity to do so yet.

I think everyoone had thoughts about leaving egerything behind and go on a crazy camper-trip. I was one of those people but never made my dream come true.
This video is very inspiring to make the opportunity to finally do whatever you dream of.
This lady is great. Seems very proud of what she created and, what’s important, seems very happy. I am very impressed.
1. I think I would live like that max. for a month. It is great adventure but a small spaces like that van may become frustrating for me on a long term. I also could never have left behind my current live place, because here I have a lot of people and activities I would miss so much after a long time of absence. But I am not saying no for occasional adventures like that during vacations.
2. I am impressed what this lady has created. Kitchen, bathroom and bedroom in about 12m2 is something incredible. But she spended a lot of time and money to settle down her van to live there for all the time. So for me as a ocasional van-occupant better (and cheaper) way is to rent someones van/camper.
3. I used to sleep in caravan and tent, so a have little experience in such difficult conditions.
1. No, personally I would not like to live in such a van. I prefer to stay in one ecosystem, work in one place, have permanent friends. I am not interested in such adventures.

2. The decorations of this van are beautiful. In the film, we can observe that a woman who shows us her van treats it as her "sanctuary", something that she will not want to change throughout her life. I would love to have a car furnished in such a way, but I don't think that I would last more than a few days in such a small area.

3. No, I have never slept or traveled in a camper, although it would be an interesting experience for sure. I think that if I would like to try it, the easiest way is to go to the peninsula on Hel.
It's nice to travel whenever you want and take your full office with you. But if it would be my only "home" I wouldn't like to live like that. I need more space and I like to do some DIY stuff which requires some tools and there's simply not enough space for that in the van.

I was surprised at how well thought this van is. She has indeed spent a lot of time planning it. I like the placement of the shower and toilet. Also, the smell of the wood inside must be nice. My only concern is safety during fast turns or emergency braking. Some things don't seem to be attached properly and might fall off and destroy other things.

I have never slept in any car but would love to try it in the future. Maybe go to the mountains and take some photos during the night? But first, I have to graduate and then I'll have more free time.

1.Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while and again change location?

Yes, I have a dream that one day I will be able to spend some time traveling across Europe. It will be a great occasion to sightsee many beautiful places, get knowledge about other cultures, and meet new people. Driving from country to country may sound unpleasant, but I will have my home with me everywhere I go. One problem that I can imagine can be finding a proper parking place for the camper, but once upon a time I have been to France with my family and we lived in a bungalow on the camping and there was also one huge camper. I had some time to take a look, and I figured out that it had a place for a car. Mini Cooper was standing inside, so I think it is really great idea to overcome a problem with parking in cities. You can leave your van/camper on the camping and go sightseeing in the city with your second car.

2.What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?

I think that it will be based on my budget, but if I have enough money to buy a full equipment car that will have everything that I want, I will do it. On the other hand, maybe I won't find an ideal camper for me, so it is just reading tea leaves.

3.Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?

Unfortunately no, I haven't had an occasion yet. But I hope one day I will be able to do this.

1. For a few months, maybe a year. Yes, why not.
But now, if I had to choose to live in a van or at home, I'd choose home.
living in a van with the family was probably hard. The person in the movie lives alone and you can see that she love it.

2. Well, probably building a home from a van is much cheaper and you do it as you want. But I think I would prefer a camper.
In a camper it's hard to change something in your own way. But there are modern options available by specialists so it is more comfortable. And if something goes wrong, we have a guarantee.

3. Yes, I slept in a camper van, also traveling around Europe. My parents have a camper.
We can travel where and when we want.
It is a great and cheap adventure if we already have a camper or van with home.

I don't think i would be able to live a van life. I have lived in a camper for a week and it was a hellish experience. Lack of space and comfort is not for me. I believe that our ancestors abandoned the nomadic lifestyle for a reason- living in one place gives you a sense of security, which is one of basic human needs. Driving from place to place must be exhausting, not only physically but also mentally.

I love the way Clare converted her van into a small hause. The ''Mouse House" looks warm and cozy. Clare put her heart and soul into the design. Every corner of her house shows that she is an artist. With her wild imagination, she managed to change a regular vehicle into a fully functional apartment. Not a single square of space is wasted. I admire how she decided to change her regular-sized old house into this new, small van that brings her joy. Buying a fully equipped camper may be easier, but converting a van into a home surely brings a lot of satisfaction.
Travelling all over the world, living for a few months in different places and meeting diverse people is tempting; especially now, when we had to cancel all our plans, our travels. Everyone can learn a lot during a trip, about other people and own beliefs in particular. My only concern is that it would be almost impossible to create a vivid relationship, unless you travel with your loved one. Hence I would consider it only for a few months, as an adventure.
Last month I saw a series called ‘How to live mortgage free with Sarah Beeny’, it is about stories similar to Clare’s. Human resourcefulness and ingenuity are extraordinary, one can find a place to live almost for free, build furniture by own hands, make it cozy. Sky is the limit! Clare’s van is beautiful, I would like to try to build something like this on my own.
But to tell the truth, I’ve never had a chance to sleep in a real camper. The only night I had to sleep in a car was in a combi, without space for legs. I’m glad that it was one-time experience…

1.Would you want to live this way? Drive to a place, live there for a while and again change location?
It sounds like a great adventure, though not for me. I'm too attached to my home, family and friends. I'm also a person who loves stability and needs it to keep sanity. However, sometimes I dream about leaving everything and everyone behind, quitting my job an school, selling everything I own and going somewhere to start a new life, like Andes to try sheep breeding and just live a simple life, far from reality I've been living my whole life.

2.What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?
It looks really cozy and is also well equipped. I think I would rather buy a fully equipped van. I'm aware that they are probably much more expensive, but I cannot imagine living in a place that small with such a primitive bathroom.

1. Few years ago I would like to be a traveler for whole my life, wake up every morning in new place , but since I tried to stay in camp for a week I change my mind. For short period of time it’s good opportunity to try it, but have a stable place to live for me seems better. Of course today everybody can work from home office and now we can try this life but I still prefer to have a stable flat for live because it’s seems more comfortable when u know your lovely place for morning coffee or good breakfast, etc.
2. In this video I really liked their interior, it seems very pretty and comfortable, but it’s a lot of work and your time which you should to do and invest. I guess I would like to buy a van and try to convert it into house on wheels more then buy a equipment camper, first of all because it’s interesting to do something in my personal way, second – I guess a lot on boys/man would like to construct something with own hands, it’s seems like hard version of IKEA 😊
3. I didn’t have this kind of opportunity but one day I guess I will!
I think about living in camper, but I think to do this you need stock of money. First of all you need to buy or make this type of car and they are so expensive. Expansion costs are big too, fuel, parts to vehicle, repairs. Maybe when I will be older and I have money or find way to earn money in trip I will try live in this way.

I prefer buy full equipment camper. I don't have any knowledge about building this type of vehicle and mechanical skills. Few weeks ago I see YouTube video about guy, who bought old bus and try convert it in camper and I see how many work, money, time and skills are requirement to take challenge. About camper in the video, I like them, it's very cozy and good looking but I prefer more modern style.

I didn't have opportunity to sleep in camper but definitely I would like try this some day.

1. Not really. I think that living in a van, or a camper, is a fun way to spend your vacation, but i wouldn't like to live like that everyday.

2. I quite like it. I don't like wasting space, and the interior of a home on wheels is really compact, but maybe it's too small to live there comfortably everyday. As for my preferences, I believe I would prefer to convert a van into a home, because it gives me more creativity about how the home would look like.

3. No, I haven't.
I would love to live this way, but only for a short period of time. I love sailing, so it’s very similar. When you sail to the place you want, sleep on your boat and if you want, you can stop by the forest, and just relax. It’s beautiful. But it’s not for me for a whole life. I like to have a stable place where I always can come back, and it will always be there. I have friends near my house, so I don’t want to leave them every time I travel to other places.
Compared to a boat, personally I would like to convert a van into home, if I decide to live that way. It’s because I can design it the way I like, the way I want to. If I will be in my house, I want it to fit my preferences. But, if I would go for a trip, even a few months, I would prefer to pick up a fully equipped camper, because I would not have the time and money to prepare a van.
I have never slept in a camper, but as I mentioned before, I slept in a boat a lot of times. For a trip, it’s amazing, I love it. You don’t have much to clean, you don’t need to take a lot of things with you. As simple as you can, great!

1. I think It is great way to live. If someone like to travels. For me It would be not nice for long term. Living in small car without serious toilet would be tiring. I like to take that kind of adventure for couple weeks.

2. I definitely would prefer camper. Vans are mostly smaller and It is hard to manage space during some kind of development. Campers are strictly created to being a mobile home. On the other hand vans are generally better to travel through wilderness, becuse of their sizes.

3. Quite a few times. But I prefer to get small regular car and tent. It is a lot of easier and cheaper. Besides there is better opportunity to go deeper in some wild regions. Heavy machines cant go to swamps for example.

I can see there are a lot of comments! I am enjoying so much interest in this topic, for which I would like to thank you :) To all those who would like to try this option, I wish you to make it come true. It can be a really interesting adventure! I think it's an adventure for life. You can later tell your family and maybe someday grandchildren. For me it is a sign of courage combined with human curiosity to see how it is in another place, in another country. Personally, I have never been on an adventure like this, but I think I would like it. I believe that actually spending the entire life or at least 10 years can be problematic, but let's say a year, two, three... It makes sense. By the way, you can learn many languages if you hang out with the natives. Wish you good luck!
Interesting. Answering your questions:

1. No, I wouldn't like to live in a car, much less a van. It is inconvenient. But I respect other people's decisions that they like to live in a van and travel.

2. I find the finish average and not very practical. I used to see modern and spacious vans with smart solutions, but of course they were not cheap.

3. No, I've never slept in a camper or a large car with a bed, and I'd rather not.

Vanlife topic has been close to me ever since I came up with an idea to convert my old Nissan for a camper. My quarantine routine needed some real boost so one day I looked up on my van and I realised that I can use my spare time to renovate it and make it my own five star hotel. However, answering the question if I would want to live in this all my life becomes more complicated. To be honest, I don’t think so. At least, not on this stage of my life. I need some stability and assurance. When studying and working I cannot live in a car, where the lack of space would affect my quality of life. That would surely be a very cheap solution, but would it be worth it? I am not sure. Nevertheless, I can imagine myself in the future living this vanlife and being fully happy with it. My biggest dream is travelling, so my own van could help me become more flexible and mobile. When I first watched the video I felt really insecure about my own renovation project. The woman made her place very cosy and practical. Everything seems to be thoughtful. If I could change one thing about the van I would brighten up the colour of wood. I feel more comfortable living in a more calm tone. Converting a van into a home is obviously a cheaper solution than buying a full equipment camper, but I found making it by myself more fun. I can have an actual contribution to how it looks. What is more, I can teach myself some very useful carpentry skills. It is a true paradise for an imagination. Everything depends on your creativity and cleverness. I must admit I have never slept in any of these but I am really proud to say the first one I will be sleeping in is my own. I cannot wait for this experience. I am sure I will have the stages of motivation decline caused by emerging problems but I believe I will overcome this and I will end this amazing project with pride and self-satisfaction.

I don't like traveling that much, so this idea doesn't really speak to me. I'd rather stay in the house that I've built for myself forever.

2.What do you think about the interior in this home on wheels? Do you prefer converting a van into a home or just buy a full equipment camper?
It doesn't strike me as amazing, I would much prefer to buy a full equipped camper.

3.Have you ever slept in a camper or big car with a real bed?
I didn't sleep in a camper's bed, I haven't even been inside a camper in my whole life. I think sleeping there isn't that comfortable unless your camper is huge.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour.
