Week 13(15.06-21.06) WRO Media Art Biennale

WRO Media Art Biennale is the most important event in the new media world in Poland and one of the most important ones in Central Europe.
It was organized for the first time in 1989.  It doesn’t show the art in the traditional way. It shows the art which is digital, modern etc. The event consists of exhibitions, film screenings, performances, lectures. 
It was founded Viola and Piotr Krajewscy.
It changes but still concentrates on the new media art.
This year I have participated in this event for the first time. I recommend it as it presents, new technologies, original solutions, great music, great people, great places.

It took place in Wrocław in:
-new building of the University Library
-National Museum in Wrocław
WRO Art Center
-Renoma Department Store, etc.
Now I would like to show a few works from this event.

 



Pan Generator- a great installation. It consists of the microphone and loudspeakers. People speak through the microphone and they hear their voice quieter. The sound is changed and harmonized. Loudspeakers generate harmonized sounds. It is great and very surprising.


Modified Pictures: Self-Supporting Universal Exhibitions.

        

This  one is my favorite.  It is a polarized filter (a magnifying glass).


A machine which creates your portrait? Why not?


SPACE-IN-BETWEEN 
“Multimedia interactive installation and performance. 60 iron hoops and linen ropes spanning around the scene limits body of the artist. She is struggling with this construction finding limits and maximum effort of her body. Motion detectors and microphones emphasize the dialogue between body movements and spatial installation through the sounds caught during the performance.”

Thanks for an interesting presentation. I would love to go to WRO one day. I've seen a machine that draws your portrait in Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw ;) And I'm also following PanGenerator projects since I've made a presentation about them last semester. Cool stuff :)

Some of your photos are scary and look like from horror movie. I wonder how this space-in-between really looks. Anyway it is a great idea that we have something like WRO in Poland where artists can show their work and compete with each other.

WRO consistently shows the development and processes of change in the current art, emerging with use of electronic media such as video art, computer animation, interactive projects, net art, performance art and multimedia concerts and performances.

The competition is a kind of résumé of current artistic practices in the field of new media art, asking the question about the role of the artist towards penetration of high culture and popular culture, world and local, commercial and independent. Emphasizes the role of individual artistic attitudes in the face of global trends.

I'm not up to date with such events, but I'm glad that in Poland we can participate in such event.

I wish to visit this event someday. These installations seems to be very interesting. I like the way the media make connection with user. The effect doesn't exist, if there's no interaction between human and installation. New media supports art and give its a new value.

You have only 10 days for this trip ;) I didn't know that a machine that draws portrait was in Copernicus Science Centre. I remember your presentation. I also like PanGenerator projects. But unfortunatelly I think that it is usualy technology devoid the art and soul :/

I agree with you. People expect interaction for every step. When I was there I've seen two people who just haven't read about project and already they have looked for interaction. It was a fun experience.

For all that interactions aren't everywhere in the art. But I don't think that these arts are worse. It isn't true. Great art defends itself without interaction.

I am not a big fan of this part of art, but I must say that it sounds interesting :) I guess it was nice experience to participate and interact with all those exhibitions. How did you like it? Was it inspiring? Did you came up with some ideas how you could use it in your projects? :)

I think I could to take a lot from WRO. It was inspiring. It gave me a wider overview in this part of art. After that I'm and I think I will freer and more conscious in my own projects.

I really like PanGenerator 's projects - I've been following them since Paulina's article, but it would be great to some in person. :) Modified Pictures look like a funny project, at least the example you have shown, SPACE-IN-BETWEEN on the other hand seems quite scary. I would like to visit this event some day, because I've heard many good things about it (this includes your presentation), the installations look inspiring.

I can't comment on this. I can only say that it's a shame that I don't have time to visit places like this, but soon after I finish PJWSTK I plan to change it and attend such biennali more often.

It is very interesting topic! I would like to go to WRO for one day and see it! The most interesting for me is SPACE-IN-BETWEEN because you know me - I love things which are connected with dance. It is a kind of form dance and express our emotion by the movements and gesticulation but in more unconventional way.

Thanks for the article, it is fascinating. I would like to go to WRO one day. I thought that it was just a modern art exposition and as I'm really not that into this subject, I've always avoided this. Modern art is just something that I don't get. I am not that kind of person that would stare at a piece of wood for a whole day making up some weird conclusions. But I see now that these are more of science projects and this is tempting:)

Very specific topic for the article but it isn’t something wrong – point for your original idea. First of all I must confess this seems to be the first time when I`m hearing about Biennale :) I have never heard this word before. Second of all it`s really hard to write more about this presentation. You`ve presented facts of this “Biennal” and it’s the end… Nice to know but nothing more. Maybe this isn’t my cup of the tea… Thanks

I haven't heard about Biennale in Wroclaw before, unfortunately.
I'll visit next Biennale edition for sure. Installations, performances and new media projects presented by you seems to be very interesting and worth seeing. I think nowadays artists are very interested in using new technologies, robotics and other modern way of expression. Of course "traditional" art still is very important but it seems to me the art which you can interact with is more interesting for common people. I find it very interesting.

I have heard about WRO Media Art Biennale before, but unfortunately I've never participated in it. I must say, the projects you presented looks really promising. I think I like the machine that creates your portrait the most. It is good, that artists use new techinques and technologies to create their works. It definitely makes viewing it an unforgettable experience.

I wish I could be there too. I adore events like this. Few weeks ago during the 'Museums' night' in Warsaw i had a chance to visit Contemporary Art Museum. I think its exibition could be interesting for you and I really recommend you to see it. Unfortunately during 'Museums' night' there were so many people there and I couldn't focuse on the exibition well enought. That is why next time I will be in Warsaw I want to go there and see it all again. ;)

I haven’t seen this machine in Copernicus when I was there last summer :( I would really love to have a portrait like this… And Natalia, you should defiantly go there. In my opinion Copernicus museum is spectacular.

Well, it's hard not to have heard of WRO when you're studying at SNM... :) However, I've never been there, so it's an interesting thing to know. I remember Pan Generator from Paulina's last years' presentation. I'm curious how did it sound live :)

I can't quite imagine how did that magnifying glass thing work? Could you explain that?

Maybe someday I'll go to WRO, if you recommend it :) I like interactive exhibits, they're really fun. Quite an interesting presentation!

Thanks for this article, it is really interesting I'm planning to go to WRO next year. Since last year I'm more and more into modern art and some custom rules in it. Its actually fascinating that there is so many subjects located in space and awareness in which we saw traditional art. This makes people confused and clueless.

To be honest I am not into modern art as I happen not to understand much of it. I prefer traditional art as the message it sends is clear to me in the majority of cases. In my opinion modern art is just its poor imitator.

This is really interesting! I haven't heard about it before but now I'm planning on going there next weekend so I can catch it before the closing. I like both traditional and modern art, they both have different effects on me. However, I do like interactive exhibitions, where you can get closer to art.

WRO Media Art Biennale is really good idea to create new capital of art in the Europe. Wroclaw can become famous. There are many very talented artists, who show their works. New media is more and more popular. This event can attract many tourists from Poland and abroad

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open.
