Week 9 [09.12-15.12.19] Microtransactions in video games

Microtransactions, or micropayments, primarily concern the environment of video game players. Skeptical players say that such a system gives a better chance of winning to rich users. On the other hand, game developers don’t see any problem in the additional elements and goods they offer. But what are really microtransactions and how do they affect the gameplay? Is this a serious topic to think about? So, what’s the matter? Microtransactions most often occur in MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games) and popular FPS (First Person Shooter) games. Microtransactions can be divided into two groups by their nature: aesthetic changes that don’t affect the user's power level in any way (alternative character appearances, weapon themes, various graphic additions, etc.); directly affecting the gameplay, making it easier for the user with add-ons for which he has paid (access to additional tasks, locations, weapons, characters, equipment, etc.); Sourc...

Week 9 [09.12-15.12.19] Survival of being buried alive

Have you ever wondered what your burial will look like, whether the doctors will make no mistake when writing the death certificate, or will you suddenly wake up under the lid of a closed coffin lying in a buried pit? Maybe you have decided to cremate your own body a long time ago and have never had such fears. I encourage you to watch a short video below, which shows some useful tricks that will allow you to be a bit calmer in that case. If this is really not your concern, please answer the questions assuming that this could also happen to you. Please watch a short video below and then answer the questions: Questions for you: 1. Have you ever been afraid of being buried alive? 2. If this happened in your case, what would you do to get to the surface? 3. After watching this video, will you decide in the future to choose a “safety coffin” for yourself, or perhaps you will take some useful items with you?

Week 9 [10.12-16.12.18] Do you want to succeed in life? You are too lazy for that

It is common to look at rich people and wish you were like them. Famous rich guys like Richard Branson, a founder of Virgin Group or Elon Musk who is the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX or even Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon named the wealthiest person in the world by Forbes on March 6, 2018. You can see them in the news, but what TV wouldn’t show is how much effort they put before they became prosperous. If you were raised in an average family it is most likely you are not comfortable with speaking about money. The education system is designed to give you an average income job with no interest of actually developing your personal skills or teach you to follow your dreams or even do something extraordinary. You have friends with whom you spend most of your free time online or if you lucky offline. We all dream that someday everything will suddenly change by itself. Maybe dreaming about winning a lottery or some unexpected inheritance. We treat life like something that happened to...

Week 9 [28.05.2018-03.06.2018] How budget airlines work?

A lot of budget airlines are present in Europe nowadays. But what makes their tickets so chip? The video tries to explain how budget airlines work, why lowcost companies are so profitable, and why large players cannot repeat their success. Questions: 1) Did you use low-cost airlines? 2) What  matters for you more: price or comfort? 3) Are cheap flights connected with negative or positive experiences?

Week 9 [28.05.2018-03.06.2018] "We have updated our privacy policies"

You may have noticed a ton of privacy policy emails lately from companies like Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, or this app I used to use or remove which I have no idea. Those new policies are the result of something called the General Data Protection Regulation or GDPR,  which went into effect May 25th. It's a new rule in the European Union, that's rewriting how data sharing works on the internet and almost no one is ready for it, most people don't even know what it is. The  General Data Protection Regulation  -  is a  regulation  in  EU law  on  data protection  and privacy for all individuals within the  European Union  and the  European Economic Area . It also addresses the export of personal data outside the EU and EEA. So it's totally ok, to not fully understand the GDPR because it's really complicated, but basically it sets new rules for how companies can treat user data, with a particular eye towa...

Week 9 [11.12 - 17.12.2017] GMO – an unfounded fear or a real danger?

Almost all of the food we consume is genetically modified. People have been doing it by pollination, which means the transfer of pollen from the flower of one plant to the flower of a plant having a different genetic constitution. But recently the genetically modified organisms have become controversial, because now it happens in labs. People tend to fear what they don ’ t know, and being a regular person makes it impossible to investigate dangers connected to genetic modification on our own. We must rely on what we read in newspapers and on the Internet. But, again, we cannot always check whether what we read is true or not. So, what is the problem with the GMO? Is it a good thing or we should definitely stop modifying organisms in labs? What is your attitude towards genetic modifications of food? Please, watch the short video below and share your point of view. Bibliography: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TmcXYp8xu4 http://www.dictionary.com/browse/cross-pol...

Week 9 [11.12 - 17.12.2017] Meaty names for veggie food?

Whenever I see a new vegan recipe posted by “ regular ” site many of the comments are “ you, vegans, should stop naming your food like meat ” , “ find your own names or return to eating meat if you miss it so much you have to name your food like this ” . Recently the UE passed the regulation forbidding plant milk producers calling their products “ milk ” . As I read on Independent website - “ Purely plant-based products cannot, in principle, be marketed with designations such as ‘ milk ’ , ‘ cream ’ , ‘ butter ’ , ‘ cheese ’ or ‘ yoghurt ’ , which are reserved by EU law for animal products, according to a European Court of Justice judgement ” . So, companies can no longer sell “ soy milk ” , “ rice cream ” or “ plant cheese ” . They decided those names may be misleading for customers. Okay, but why do vegans call their food meat names? Is it really to mislead others? Do they want people to mistake their meat substitutes for real meat and therefore buy more vegan food? Or mayb...

Week 9 [11.12 - 17.12.2017] Easy DIY projects for kid engineers

There are many non-creative people in today's world. In my opinion it's caused by lack of interesting "DIY" projects at school. It would be so developing for kids. Maybe more of them would find out that beeing an engineer is not only about math and physics theory (sure, it depends on your specialization). Here is little example how to encourage kids to make something by themselves and learn at the same time. In my opinion, it would be great to have such classes as i love to tinker. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k89OTpDvIU 1. Would you like to have such classes in your middle school? 2. Do you like to tinker? 3. Do you also miss original flappy bird? 4. What do you think about those differences in genders and minorties?

Week 9 [11.12 - 17.12.2017] FRPG

At first let’s explain what it actually is. FRPG, stands for Fantasy Role Play Games  which aren't computer games or card games. It may seem strange or uninteresting to people who only play computer games with their friends via Internet seeking adrenaline and competition, however FRPG were invented when both computers and the Internet weren't as popular as they are now or maybe not even existing in world wide spectrum. So what is needed to start playing if it doesn't require any kind of hardware? https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2d/Dados_4_a_20_caras_trans.png The only things needed are a rule book or someone who knows it pretty well or you can create new set of rules by yourself, a few k6 (six-sided dice or twelve-sided dices, there is even a hundred-sided dice for those systems that 6k wouldn’t be enough), some paper, a pencil and your imagination. In addition you can have your own map or create a new one to visualize where your character ...
