Anime and cartoons have many similar features. They both take form of two-dimensional, illustrated visual art work, which is published not only on TV, but also in cinemas as a movies. For a person who isn’t a fan of any of those forms they might look really similar. Just some 2d characters living their lives on the screen for the enjoyment of masses. But looking at this topic closely, there are many differences between those two, which I would like to focus on.
The first thing that I would like to take a look at is a visual style. Of course, each work can have their own style, but there are some main features that are present in the most of each production. In anime, characters usually have an anatomy similar to normal people. The one, distinctive feature of this art style is the size of female characters eyes. They are usually big and shiny. Looking at cartoons, the style of most productions is simplistic, and artists can really go wild with their imagination, by thinking of the most interesting way to stylize human anatomy in their show.
The second topic is production itself. They both use traditional animation features (story boarding, voice action, character design and celluloid production). These days some productions are trying to simplify some parts of their job and use 3D animations. The difference lies in how fans react to this kind of process. A lot of anime fans are really sceptic when it comes to 3D models of characters. On the other hand, cartoon fans aren’t usually bothered by this fact, because their characters are simplified, and 3D models don’t look so off.
The last difference is a theme. Cartoons are usually lighthearted shows that are supposed to make their viewers laugh. Of course there might be some serious, or sad moments, some cartoons even bring up politics, or a situation in some real countries. But usually the main focus is on making fun of something, or making characters act weird, so the viewer can just laugh and relax, even if it’s a black humour. When it comes to anime, it’s more like movies. It can be a romance comedy, serious drama or even some really scary horror. They have a wide range of topics, which makes it easier to choose something for yourself.
My point is, both styles of production are great and you should give them a try. Especially now, when we are staying at home and binge watching series on Netflix, why not taking a break from series featuring actors and watching some cartoon or anime?

2. Cartoons with black humor are not my favorite film genre because I don't like the abuse of profanity or groundless insults. If black humor is the whole humorous part in a given movie, it is not interesting to me. If dark humor only comes out occasionally then that can be a nice part.
3. When I was a kid I didn't have a favorite cartoon because I didn't watch cartoons very often. I watched what was on TV no matter what it was. I liked all the adventure stories that had a storyline.
I love dark humor in cartoons. It’s probably because this form is quite innocent in visuals, and the mix between those two factors is purely brilliant and usually hilarious. I’m in love with Netflix’s “Disenchantment”, I think it was created by people who’re producing The Simpsons. It has 2 seasons right now, I’m waiting for more, as the plot and the dark humor is absolutely fantastic.
I don’t think I had only one. I loved the original 1992 “X-Men Animated” by Marvel, and many more from that studio (Spider Man is a classic, but also the animated Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and Silver Surfer were awesome). I also watched the old version of My Little Pony and actually preferred it, even if the ponies weren’t that cute as they are in the newer versions 😉 I remember all those cartoons I enjoyed were mostly American or sometimes Japanese and they were cringe as they could be. I’ve recently watched some old Pokemon and Totally Spies on Netflix just to find out if they were as good as I remember them and well, I’ve laughed my head off because of all the awkward jokes and cringe, but I think it was good enough. I think modern cartoons are usually really treating kids like they were stupid, while the ones I remember were a little bit darker and sharp, but maybe it’s me just being a boomer :D

Ah, "Howl's Moving Castle" is my favorite movie by Studio Ghibli! I used to watch it as a kid, and I didn't get a lot of things, because they seem to be really complicated. After some time I rewatched it and fell in love with how amazing that movie was! I heard that it was based on a book, so it would be really cool to read it someday.
I also watched all Marvel animated series! They are actually my only source of information about all superheroes because I'm not that much into the movies.
I also tried to watch some new cartoons, but most of them were too annoying to me, so I guess that I also became a boomer </3.

I was a huge fan of cartoons when I was a kid. It's hard to select a favourite among all shows that I watched. But if I have to pick I would choose 3 of them, which are: Dexter's Laboratory, Looney Tunes and The Fairly OddParents.
It depends on my mood. Nowadays, I don't watch cartoons or anime, I prefer "normal" series or movies but I don't deny a sense of these stories. When I was a kid, I enjoyed cartoons. I can still mention that evenings when I was watching The Powerpuff Girls. It's funny that I didn't notice that violence and it was just amusing for me. On the other hand I made a huge mistake few years ago, I did something unforgivable. I turned on Billy and Mandy, full of hope that my mentions would cover reality, but unfortunately At that moment I devastated my childhood... DON'T DO THAT. It was embarrassing and awkward.

I prefer anime. It is not only a series to watch on television or computer but it is also deeply rooted in the asian culture. Cartoons are mostly aimed for children/teenagers but in anime you can find everything for every group of audience. Starting from series typically for children and ending on horrors, criminals, psychological and tearjerkers. I believe everyone would find something which fits his own interests best.

I personally love black humour but I am not sure if cartoons are a good place for them since their main audience are children. I guess in most cases they will not understand them and ignore the fact but I still do not have an opinion on that.

Of course, a lot of them but if I have to choose one it would be Tom and Jerry. Very well known comedy cartoon about a cat fighting a mouse but deeply inside they are friends after all. I love that cartoon and I have a great sentiment to it. Since characters there are not talking anything my parents were enjoying watching this cartoon with me (my parents are not polish speakers). It is a great memory, spending these times watching cartoons with my whole family.

Black humour in cartoons is one of my favourite thing in the world. Why? Because it can go way much further than black humour in regular movies. Even tiniest gag can feature explosions, flights to space or even deaths of characters (usually pretty pricey when it comes to actor movies). So to sum up, I'm all for black humour, ESPECIALLY in anime/cartoons.
Once again, it's hard to point out one single favourite cartoon. I used to love "Ed, Edd and Eddy" for it's unique humour. It was pretty good mix of absurd, humour and top cartoonish scheming. I also love a good exaggeration in cartoon, while in actor movies it moght be a little bit cringy.

I actually really like cartoons featuring dark humor. Even as a kid, I think that I preferred a series that contained some dark humour. My all-time favourite cartoon was Courage the Cowardly Dog. He lived in a middle of nowhere with the people that have adopted him, Muriel and her husband Eustace. Each episode, monsters would try to abduct or harm them, but Courage would always save them, even though he was deadly scared of these monsters. When I grew up, I read an opinion that this show could have shown the world in a way that dogs perceive it.
As I mentioned before, my favourite cartoon was Courage the Cowardly Dog. I liked most of the cartoons that were also played at that time on channels like Cartoon Network and Disney Channel, like Scooby-Doo, Recess, Ed, Edd, Eddy or Johny Bravo. When it comes to anime, my favourite as a kid was Spired Away, that I have rediscovered many years later. I liked it because of its perception of the spirit world and mesmerising artwork.
I think that the most important factor of a series is the story and not the method it is portrayed in. Animation is just a medium, it doesn't make anything worse or better. Animation and series featuring actors have their own strengths. A series featuring actors are more lifelike, it's easier to relate to them. Animation gives creators opportunity to make a story without boundaries. Moreover, some animations have beautiful and unique art style that makes them pleasurable to watch.

I really enjoy them. I think that freedom of creation and unlimited boundaries are one of the biggest strengths of animation. Jokes that could never take place in "regular" shows can be done in cartoons without making anyone look guilty. Shows like "Family Guy" or "Bojack the Horseman" are a great example of that. They often bring up subjects of racism, mental health or sexism in amusing but not pretentious way.

I really used to love "Powerpuff girls" when I was a child. I remember admiring the strength of those girls and dreamed about having an extraordinary power just like them. Moreover, I really enjoyed the villains in this show, they were different and more twisted than black characters from other series.
I prefer anime, I love anime, I don't know why I just like it.
It all started with Naruto, Pokemon, Tokyo Ghoul, etc. I like anime in the fantasy genre where the main character has some unique skills. Of the recently viewed ones, I really liked "The god of the high school", "The magic academy" and "The black clover". But I don't really like the last one because the main character does not have any magic, but I think he has perhaps some kind of hidden talent. In general, I'm really looking forward to the continuation of One-Punch Man, I'm very mad with the cast because they've been filming this series for so long and stopped at the most interesting place.

I don’t remember there were many of them. But my favorite anime is Akame ga Kill, a very cool TV series. This is an anime in the genre of action and fantasy. I liked the use of such weapons as a poisonous or cursed sword, and a gun, the power of which depends on the emotions of the owner.

Haha, I can imagine how devastating it had to be to watch Billy and Mandy when you are an adult. If I remember correctly, it was a really weird and gross show. I remember that I always didn't like Billy, because he was doing all sorts of disgusting stuff.
The Powerpuff Girls also were a huge part of my childhood! I tried to watch a new version of it, which was released a few years ago, but it wasn't the same. So I end up being a little bit disappointed.

Edd, Edd & Eddy was a really weird show. I didn't like it that much, because it looked pretty gross in my opinion, and jokes weren't really for me. But I'm happy that someone remembers it!
The same goes for me. All my favourite cartoons were on Cartoon Network! It was such a great channel, but then it started to feature less and less cartoons. Idk how is it doing right now, but I will always remember it from its good days!
I also really loved Courage the Cowardly Dog! I think that it was the series that started my love for creepy and weird series. I love how each episode portrayed new characters, with their unique creepy features. It was really creative, and even now I come back to this cartoon and watch some episodes with the same feelings as I was young.
Thank you for your input! I also think that the plot is the most important part of the show. I usually choose shows with features darker topics, and that's pretty difficult to find in cartoons, so I usually stick to anime and movies.
I saw all series that you wrote about~. My favourite one is probably Naruto, since I grew up with it and I really got attached to the characters (though most of my favourite characters have died haha). I'm really sad that Boruto anime is so bad. I watched like 160 episodes, and almost each of them was boring and predictable, and there wasn't any character that I would like as much as in Naruto. So I dropped it for now. I hope that maybe In the future it will get more interesting.
Yesss, SOuth Park is so good! I can't wait for more episodes. Although I'm a little bit annoyed that Randy is the main character right now. I preferred when the four boys were the most important characters, and I hope that one day they are going to come back to those times. I also really miss Kenny. He is my favourite character, and for a long time, he had almost no screen time, which makes me really sad.
I can definitely say that cartoons are my least favourite type of tv series. When it comes to anime and "normal" series, I don't have a preference, I like them both equally.

It all depends on the subject. Frankly, I am not a fan of anime. The only one that I really enjoyed was Yu Gi Oh and it was maaany years ago. Since early years I was not interested in anime and I usually changed channel when any anime poped up. Nowadays CG animation is my favourite.

I am a fan. I like black and edgy humour. Animation has some tools which let creators show emotions and some things completely different when compared to live action films. This works out beautifully with dark humor.

I don’t mind it. I think that it might be taken more lightly if the dark humor is portrayed in the cartoon instead of series with actors. Also, a lot of things might be shown in a cartoon that wouldn’t be ok in the regular series.
I absolutely loved Totally Spies and Witch which I was watching with my sister. When we were in preschool we were obsessed with Scooby-Doo and a few years later our younger brother also was watching it almost every day. Actually, we still watch Scooby-Doo even though we memorized every single episode.
To be honest, I'm not a big fan of anime. I used to watch a lot of cartoons as a child/teenager, but now, except for Rick and Morty I watch only series featuring actors. Watching TV is not my favourite way of spending free time, and if I watch something, mainly it's football. I don't know why I prefer series with actors, but I think, I grew out of watching cartoons.

I like black humor, maybe not very extreme, rather the "light version". In my opinion it's often really funnya and it's not easy to make out high quality black humor jokes.

A lot of. First of all Galactic Football, I loved it. I remember that I discovered this series when I was ill. I had to stay home for some time, and I was forced to spend this time in my bed, so I was laying and watching it. The series is about football team named Snow Kids, from Akillian's planet. They are a group of children that wants to rebuild the power of their club, because long time ago when Akillian's team was the best, planet was shaken by the explosion and football came to an end.
Honestly I think it doesn't really matter if its a cartoon, anime or series. As long as it's interesting to watch, is passing some emotions and makes you wanna watch it - it's worth it. Some people are obsessed when it comes to anime and it may sound wrong only because it's not that popular as TV series in europe. As far as I'm concerned people in Japan watch it mainly as there are a lot of them rated for 18+ for violent content. Like for example I know berserk and consider it as not so childish. Maybe I'm wrong, who knows :)

First of all, my favorite series featuring actors that are either based on history or inspired by real facts. I happen to watch, especially those cartoons created by Bartosz Walaszek - Blok Ekipa, Kapitan Bomba or The Exorcist. An adult film very often relates to current political events. It is often a legitimate criticism of behavior and people.

When I was little, I loved American cartoons - Spiderman, Ironman and Batman. These were my favorite fairy tales. Why? I guess I liked the fight between good and evil. I had several! I loved Courage the Cowardly Dog for the dark and scary mood. Also, it had a dog as the main character so they bought me from the start ;) I also liked Tom and Jerry, however, now, as I look at it, it was very unfair towards poor Tom. I guess my favourite cartoon growing up was Scooby-Doo. It had it all, dog, mysteries, scary mood and a lot of food. Scooby-Doo was also the one that introduced me to English as my mother bought some English VHS that I watched a million times to finally catch all the jokes. Thanks, Mom!
Anime is a pleasure to watch for both adults and children, because the anime touches on human feelings, relationships, true love, friendship and a beautiful life, and much more. When you watch anime, you worry about the characters, you need to think a lot to understand the meaning of one or another of their actions. Unlike cartoons, where everything is immediately clear! Anime is unpredictability, always associated with mystery. But nothing excites the consciousness like the unknown. Sometimes there is even a feeling that anime is something formless, meaningless and, at the same time, incredible and pleasant. Of course, this is not the case, because anime knows its viewer by sight. It's impossible to be indifferent to anime. Anime is designed for the imagination and for older people. If you think anime is only for kids, then you are wrong. There are historical anime, anime about the war.
2. I have a great attitude to black humor, in any works. I like jokes and humor in general, but humor comes in all sorts and types and I have nothing against it.

In my honest opinion anime is the best medium by which you can tell a good story and make people care about characters. The plot of anime is usually about each persons feelings and their way to find their true meaning or understanding. These days actors tend to have this "one face" in every production, in anime it is a lot more simple, you just draw some lines and you exactly know how the character is feeling at the moment whish helps you better understand their feelings. My favourite cartoon as a kid was "Tom&Jerry" and "Samuraj Jack", loved Tom&Jerry for their endless comedy and Jack for it's unique style and plot. If you don't know, they made last season like 2 years ago, if you ever watched Samuraj Jack you have to watch it!
I love a good cartoon with all my heart, they are funny (in most cases) and they’re giving the possibilities to show many things, that regular series with actors can’t. Of course from the graphic point of view they can do much more than typical series, but despite that I really enjoy “normal” tv series. There are plenty of interesting and valuable series that are “leaving” something behind. Even though I love watching cartoons, I can’t force myself to enjoy anime. I think that their character style is kinda annoying, also the voiceovers are cruel. I really hate those high pitch notes that most female characters are generating with every single word they say. I don’t know, I think that anime is very often sexist, and very, very exaggerated. Or maybe I didn’t found any worth watching for me. I watched few anime series when I was younger and I really appreciate Ghibli studio (I love their movies, they are really good and well done), but overall I don’t understand this anime phenomenon.

I think that they are the best! Those are my favorite ones! :D Of course, most of them are made for adults, but lots of people simply don’t understand that. I think that is why they’re controversial, because for example parent, who is seeing some content of those cartoons is probably going crazy, imagining their kids watching something like that.

I can’t choose one. One of my favorites while I was little, like 5/6 years old was “Scooby Doo”. I loved this cartoon so much, that my father used to buy me some scooby doo films on the video tapes, and I am sure that I’ve had every single one of them in that time. I also really enjoyed “SpongeBob the square pants” but with this one it was more occasional, because it was emitted sometimes on TVN or something, so I watched it when I accidentally found it ;) When I was older I watched a lot of Cartoon Network, it was my favorite tv channel and I liked pretty much everything they played. I really liked “The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy”, I think that those „dark” cartoons were working best for me. Later I fell in love with “Adventure Time” and it’s still taking one of bigger pieces of my heart. :) Of course there were many other cartoons I’ve enjoyed, but the list is so big that I chose few to talk about.
2. I believe they have a right to exit. Truly, a cartoon is just a tool of expression. The fact that usually kids watch cartoons does not prevent to use this tool in other topics and scenes. Cartoons sometimes even have more creative opportunities regarding “adult” topics that films, were black humour is also used.
3. My favourite cartoon was “Smeshariki”. I really liked the sense of humour which was presented together with philosophic problems. I also loved character design and personalities that were created. My favourite smesharik was purple Yozhyk (Hedgehog) with glasses.
I have no preferences it depends what is it about and quality. Cartoons, anime, actor series, are all different styles and some things cannot happen in actor series and some at anime.
2. What do you think about cartoons that feature black humour?
It's easier to feature dark humor in cartoons, because of whole cartoon art. You can do with cartoon character whatever you want. It won't be easy to do with actor series and it would look rather hilarious.
3. Did you have a favourite cartoon as a kid? Why did you like it?
Dexter's maybe, but I wasn't cartoon person as a kid, I've watched mostly Discovery like channels.
2. I know only one cartoon with black humor, it’s called “South Park” but I think they mentioned only hyped topics. I guess they try to show absurd to change somebody mind, because whenever you doing something you can’t see that you can do something wrong, but when you see this from another side you can realize that you are laughing from yourself and change something.
3. Like a kid I was watching “Simpsons”, especially it was good in the Ukrainian language, at 7 a.m. when I was having my breakfast I was watching this cartoon to get some positive emotions before school 😊
I think it is hard to compare series featuring actors and cartoons/anime. I really like series with actors, probably more than cartoons or anime, but it all depends about the topic of the video. According to the question, I don't like anime, I have never watched anime and I still know that it is just not my sense of humor. I feel really bad when I see some Japanese memes and I can't imagine what can happened to me to made me watch some anime. Cartoons were really nice when I was younger. I love them. Now I have watched recently Rick and Morty, it is animation which we can watch on Netflix.
2. What do you think about cartoons that feature black humour?
I like cartoon like that. I really like black humour, it is so enjoyable to watch and hear, some jokes like these one presented in Rick and Morty or BoJack Horseman. These two series are my favorites last time. Black humour is great because we can laugh about things which are daily inappropriate to laugh or it shows a distance for some kind of behavior.
3. Did you have a favourite cartoon as a kid? Why did you like it?
I have some cartoons. One of them is "Ed, Edd, Eddy", "Ach ten Endy" or "Scooby-Doo". I really enjoy watching the last one. Sometimes I think that I watched all the episodes of them. It is one of the best cartoon which I was able to watch every day and night and it is still interesting.
2. I believe that they can be more interesting than typical series due to their unusual atmosphere. however, it is worth remembering that it is easy to cross the border and such cartoons can be distasteful.
3. I think I had two favorite cartoons. One of them was definitely "Courage the Cowardly Dog" because I cared about every story that I found very scary or funny. The second when I was little older was Ben 10, like most teenage boys superheroes with the ability to change into other characters that save the world are great.
2. I think this is a good way to get rid of negative emotions like stress or fatigue. I like them and I like to watch them, even though some people find it inappropriate.
3. As a child, I liked almost all fairy tales, but one of my favorite fairy tales was 'Batman.' I think most of all I liked the fact that the main character saved everyone from danger. I also liked that he had a car and a super superhero costume. I suspect that it was not only my favorite fairy tale, but also of great other people, because each of us, when we were little, dreamed of becoming a superhero.
I'm so happy that someone remembers Ben10! I really loved the first two series of it, but then the changed art style and somehow it became more childish and I didn't like it as much anymore :<.
Ah yes, it's always possible that some kids are going to watch those cartoons. But I think it's the responsibility of parents to learn what kind of stuff is their child watching. Or else there are going to be children traumatized by cartoons like Happy Tree Friends (which is great, I really love it haha).

ScoobyDoo was great! Recently I've watched a new movie from the series and even if it was in 3d, it was perfect~ Jokes were really funny and they used some old characters from Cartoon Network shows~ And they even had the same polish voices. I think that it's really cool!
I've also seen Witch! It was sad that they haven't made more episodes, because I couldn't read any comics, because they were expensive, and my friends always knew so much more than me. It was always making me feel worse than them. But the cartoon was really nice, I especially remember the cool song from the opening! I can still remember all the lyrics
I was much older when I learned about Galactic Football, but when I got into it, I watched all seasons in one week! I got really sad when the last episode ended with a cliffhanger and they didn't make any more seasons of it :<
