Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit.
Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to
the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases.
These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.

The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced
the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.

What is smog?

Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended
dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be
particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people.
These compounds often come from incomplete combustion such as soot or ash. Also observed are
particles that come from worn car tires. The dust suspended in the values of specific micrometers is
categorized. PM 10 dust is particles above 10 micrometers. The PM 2.5 dust is less than 2.5
micrometers.

Harmfulness of PM 10 and PM 2.5

The size of the dust is important. Breathing air containing PM 10 dust results in the particles settling
in the lungs. The harmfulness of this dust can lead to asthma or lung disease.
Dust 2.5 is much more dangerous because it does not settle in the lungs but gets into it. This
dust penetrates the pulmonary alveoli into the circulatory system. The result may be atherosclerosis,
asthma, neoplastic diseases, liver damage and even stroke.

How to counteract?

Counteracting is to reduce excreted gases and dust as a result of non-total combustion. The Euro IV
standard forced the producers to use a diesel particulate filter (DPF).
DPF is a filter that catches soot particles and other unburned compounds in incomplete combustion.
When the filter fills up, the on-board computer activates the firing procedure for the remaining
compounds.
Unfortunately, this filter is not long-lived and needs to be replaced every now and then. Many diesel
car users cut the DPF filter because regeneration of the filter involves high costs. This is not legal,
and yet many car owners use this procedure.

Currently, car manufacturers are complying with Euro VI standards, in which there is not only DPF.
The VAG concern in diesel engines uses AdBlue. It is a urea solution that reacts with nitrogen oxides.
They will break them into nitrogen and water vapor.
Other manufacturers prefer downsizing. That is, the withdrawal of cars with large capacity engines.
V6 or V8 engines are no longer found in new common cars. At present, three-cylinder units with small
 capacities are dominating.

The reduction of exhaust emissions is to contribute to the improvement of air quality. This will have
an impact on reducing the number of people suffering from lung and cancer diseases. At the same time,
reducing emissions can contribute to reducing the negative consequences of climate change.

Questions:

1. Do you agree with the implementation of emission standards by the European Union?

2. Do you think that smog is a real threat to our health and life?

3. Do you drive with a diesel car? If so, do you have any solutions that reduce emissions?

Comments

1. Do you agree with the implementation of emission standards by the European Union?
Yes, I think that the decision that the European Union is taking in this topic is completely correct. Especially as we will see the problems of climate change, health problems, unimaginable differences between modern air pollution and those that were a decade ago.

2. Do you think that smog is a real threat to our health and life?
Yes, I think it has an impact on our health and life. In Warsaw, this is not so noticeable, although doctors who diagnose diseases associated with smog see an increase in disease. However, let's see Beijing, where air quality is many times worse than ours.

3. Do you drive with a diesel car? If so, do you have any solutions that reduce emissions?
No. I drive a car for gas, but I plan to buy an electric car or at least a hybrid one in the near future.

I am petrol head and i don't like it, but i understand that we need it, so ye i am agree.
2. Do you thing that smog is a real threat to our health and life ?
my father was smoking in his young years, and he is going to Kiev through Zaporozhye(Industrial city), their bus has some stop in it and he thought okay we have 5 minutes to smoke and i want to smoke, he get of the bus do a few breath, and he got that he don't want smoke, because of pollution
it’s just a funny history, but my answer to the question Yes
3. Do you drive with a diesel car? If so, do you have any solutions that reduce emissions?
yes i had a diesel car, nope i dont have it, but if here wil be like in german i will sell it :)

1. Do you agree with the implementation of emission standards by the European Union?
Not really, it seems more like a trading of those emission standards

2. Do you think that smog is a real threat to our health and life?
Check it by yourself:
https://airly.eu/map/pl/

3. Do you drive with a diesel car? If so, do you have any solutions that reduce emissions?
No i dont drive diesel. but the polution depends:
In "smaller" locations the main source is heating - old furnaces, bad quality coal,
using whatever you get your hands on as fuel. Add to that people burning old leaves
and other shit. The awareness of what it is causing is very low, especially with
sceptism towards anything that is "green" and "eco"

In big cities it is more from cars (exhaust, brake dust, big chunk is secondary car emission -
cars raising dust from the roads after it has fallen down). We have a big % share of diesel
cars over gasoline ones and they are the main source of PM2.5 and PM10 dust that helps
make out the smog. The age of cars and the fact that having DPF in a car is an act of
eco-terrorism (over dumb folks so called freedom) increases the emission further.
1. Do you agree with the implementation of emission standards by the European Union?
Yes, i totally agree with the implementation of emission standards by the European Union. I don't see that something can go wrong. It is a good decision that makes our enviroment cleaner and better. Nothing more to say.
2. Do you think that smog is a real threat to our health and life?
Yes, definitely yes. The smog is a real threat to our health today. I know there are a lot of companies are trying to struggle with the smog, but we don't see results so far. I hope that there will be more investments in future to prevent the smog.
3. Do you drive with a diesel car? If so, do you have any solutions that reduce emissions?
I don't drive a car. Honestly, don't know about solutions but i'm sure that buying electric car would be better than driving diesel car.

1. Do you agree with the implementation of emission standards by the European Union?
I must agree that we need regulations. If we like to have a clear air it's necessary to somehow regulate emissions. On the other side I don't like that the effect of these regulations is downsizing engines even in sports cars, so they lose some part of their soul.

2. Do you think that smog is a real threat to our health and life?
I think it is indeed a real problem and it's certainly a threat for our health and life. Fortunately the world sees the problem and try to focus on restraining the pollution. But there are not only cars that pollute the environment, we also have factories, coal power plants and other entertainment.

3. Do you drive with a diesel car? If so, do you have any solutions that reduce emissions?
I drive a petrol car and don't have any diesel powered car in my entire family. But actually it's not due to a pollution thing, in fact it is probably just a matter of preference.
1. I am a little bit skeptical, because I think that probably the intention of those norms is corruption. The idea is right, because the emission is harmful, but I suspect that EU administration doesn't care that much about our health but more about their own profit. It is somehow visible after the recent elections. People chose again deputies who do literally nothing and get paid sick amounts of money for that.

2. Yes, it is, but it seems that it doesn't come from car emission. Smog in Poland is a hot topic only in Winter in the heating season. Cars are present on the streets all the time and it is very possible that certain groups of activists want to use smog to fight with cars and their owners, because of pure hatred towards all means of transport different that holy bicycle. They hate even electric cars, that's insane.

3. No, I don't, I am a motorcyclist.
After reading this article, I was once again convinced that it is necessary to develop electric cars. Of course, I agree with the introduction of standards for the release of harmful substances into the atmosphere. I think it needs to be done all over the world. I can not understand when these people already understand that money will be unnecessary to anyone when we all die. Humanity needs to concentrate all its forces on extending the existence of our planet.
I always find it funny, when industrieal megacorporations who make much more pollution than other people combined create a new laws that enforce people to buy their products to "decrease pollution". Just like everything in recent EU activities this decision is heavily politicised and if i were an EU citizen i would think twice before adopting this. I think that smog is one hell of a problem, especially in heavily industrialized regions, and usually it's not the inhabitants of these regions who are to be blamed for that. I do not drive any car, i use public transport and i would suggest developing and investing in public transport instead of expensive cars to decrese pollution.
We seem to live in a free world, we can do whatever we want, but the European Union holds our hands and says what is good and what is bad. As a result, it puts various restrictions on us, and that is ridiculous. Nevertheless, I think it is important to reduce emissions of harmful substances. It is only a pity that most of the world does not care. I believe that smog is a threat because it consumes a lot of money that could be transferred into the fight against a real threat. I have never driven a diesel car.

1. Do you agree with the implementation of emission standards by the European Union?

I am car guy and as I really like big old engines which would not pass any emission test today, I understand standards applied by the EU. It’s a no brainer that the quality of the air is getting worse and worse so implementing standards is vital and inevitable today.

2. Do you think that smog is a real threat to our health and life?

Of course, if we look at the last edition of United Nations Climate Change Conference which was held in one of the most polluted cities in Poland – Katowice and how people from different countries spoke out about the quality of the air and how they struggled with breathing and their throat hurt then yes, I think that smog can be a threat to our health.

3. Do you drive with a diesel car? If so, do you have any solutions that reduce emissions?

No, I don’t and never have.
1. Do you agree with the implementation of emission standards by the European Union?

Yes, I do agree with the implementation of emission standards by the EU. I think that it’s a good idea, that protects the health of many people.

2. Do you think that smog is a real threat to our health and life?

Yes I do. But to be honest it shouldn’t be opinion based question, that’s just the fact. There were many studies that link smog to many diseases and decreasing of human lifespan. It doesn’t matter what I think, that’s just a fact. If someone thinks that the sky is green, I don’t really care about his opinion because the facts are different ;)

3. Do you drive with a diesel car? If so, do you have any solutions that reduce emissions?

Yes, my car has diesel engine. I think that the easiest and at the same time most effective way to reduce emissions is to drive car only when necessary. When it’s possible we should use public transport, walk or ride a bike.

1.
On the one hand, I agree with the European Union, but on the other hand, they overdo it with this emission of exhaust gases.
The claim that an electric car is pure ecology is not true. The reason for all this is utilization of batteries that increase pollution.
2. I think that smog is a real threat and you have to fight it. From my point of view, cities should invest in a city without exhaust fumes.
3. Yes, I have diesel car . I try not to drive him around the city, I try to do regular reviews.
It's nice to hear that you are aware of the risks posed by smog.
What electric or hybrid car are you going to buy? Maybe Tesla Model 3 as an electric car?
Unfortunately, I do not know what is the air pollution in Ukraine, but from your description it does not sound to be exceptional.
Are you talking about banning cars from entering cities that have no standards such as Euro 5?
A very interesting observation about eco-terrorism.
As much as possible, littering is another big problem in air pollution.
As for PM, it is as much as possible that dust is in many forms not man-made.
Already today we can observe differences in air quality that is in Western Europe, and what in the east.
I recommend entering this link during the heating season.
http://airindex.eea.europa.eu/
It's nice that you see the problem of air pollution.
Of course, the problem of diesel cars is only a fraction of the whole problem.
You never wanted to have diesel?
So you think that the biggest win is the automotive industry, which can earn on new solutions?

The smog problem does not occur only during the heating period. In the period of strong heat when all of them turn on air conditioning, a lot of harmful substances are produced from coal-fired power plants.

Thanks for noticing your point of view.
It is also here that the transport carrying goods is powered by a diesel engine. That's why there is an idea for electric vehicles not to produce so much pollution.
Thanks for expressing your opinion.
I think that EU decisions are most often about real research. Maybe we are forced to follow certain rules to protect ourselves from ourselves?
Thanks for the opinion. However, do you see any solution for us? So that the quality of our air was better?
However, many people think that it's just a union or corporation idea to create a new market for selling their products. What do you think about this?
Personally, I also think that electric cars are not the best solution. However, so far they are the only one. Unless cars for hydrogen drive will become a reality. If you could choose such a hydrogen car, would you choose?
1. I’m not the biggest fan of all European Commission restrictions. However, in this case I say that our Earth is a communal asset of everyone in the world and environmental issues must be legally regulated.
2. Smog may contain heavy metals particles, which are proved to be threat to our health. We should also remember about lives of our descendants and stop this madness.
3. I hardly ever drive. I would love to live in utopian world, where cars in large agglomerations are
forbidden, but public transport is on such high level, that it’s even faster to use it than a car and
no one complains about it.

1. Do you agree with the implementation of emission standards by the European Union?
It seems to me that these standards should be updated much more frequently, since the standard adopted in 1992 cannot solve the problem of atmospheric pollution. The automotive industry and its innovations are rapidly amenable to various modifications; besides, a lot of observations and discoveries have been made in environmental science. Based on this, we can say that perhaps this standard today will not be able to display a solution to all problems.

2. Do you think that smog is a real threat to our health and life?
Definitely, there is no doubt about it. At least I have not seen in any of the sources how anyone described the positive aspects of smog. It is harmful to health, and it is obvious. In any case, this problem must be fought everywhere in the world.

3. Do you drive with a diesel car? If so, do you have any solutions that reduce emissions?
No, I do not drive a diesel engine. But I know the usual truths that will help at least a certain percentage to reduce emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere. It should start at least with the use of public transport, for more rarely using their own cars.
1. Do you agree with the implementation of emission standards by the European Union?
Yes, I was really looking forward to it. I do not want to offend car drivers, but I hope, that with time these standards will become even tougher.

2. Do you think that smog is a real threat to our health and life?
Yes, smog its real threat. And for our lives, and for the life of the planet. Many of us do not care what be with the planet when we die. But we can not live as one-day butterflies. We must leave for our children a worthy inheritance.

3. Do you drive with a diesel car? If so, do you have any solutions that reduce emissions?
I ride trams and a bicycle. So unfortunately I can not advise anything. Unless to change the car for another, or in general to change a type of transport.
1. Do you agree with the implementation of emission standards by the European Union?
In my opinion, Euro VI standards is a very good solution of air pollution problem in cities. It made manufacturers change their products, make them more ecologic. What about the adherence to these rules? It is more moral question. But on the other hand, the government can make stronger penalties for non-compliance with standards.

2. Do you think that smog is a real threat to our health and life?
For sure, yes. I can give you very demonstrative example. New Deli is a very polluted city. Its smog is 1/ 3 of air in New York (pay attention on a distance)! Moreover, еhe level of air pollution was 25 times higher than the "safe standard" established by the World Health Organization!

3. Do you drive with a diesel car? If so, do you have any solutions that reduce emissions?
No, I even don't have a driver's license.
1. Yes, of course and I think it would be unreasonable not to agree.
2. Yes, I totally think that smog is a real threat especially because we live in Poland. Poland is one of the most polluted countries in Europe. Air pollution levels are incredibly high. It is scientifically proven that smog causes diseases and not only that, high CO2 levels have a direct and immediate effect on our cognitive ability.
3. I don't own a car. I basically get everywhere by bike.
Yes i think that there should be hard regulations on emissions for all countries but i think EU is a good start.
Yes I think so, and scientists claims too. I don't think it is a debatable issue, I believe that everyone knows that.
I used to drive diesel I use petrol one now but not because it is less harmfull. Just because old car was broken and we gets a new one. I think is is not our part to reduce emission it should be regulated by cars manufacturers.
1. No, by these standards the engines are deteriorated and their service life is shortened. What is ecology like, how often do you have to change cars? I am for ecology but they do it wisely.
2. Yes of course, but not all of it is in cars.
3. I prefer spark ignition engines, however, for long trips diesel engines is the best.

i dont agree becouse chinese is 1000 more pollution producing than whole europe..

2. Do you think that smog is a real threat to our health and life?

its real becouse many of us being dead of that reason ;/

3. Do you drive with a diesel car? If so, do you have any solutions that reduce emissions?

yea sure i drive with diesel car, and my solution is AdBlue added to pollution which reduces it.
1. Do you agree with the implementation of emission standards by the European Union?
I am very happy that this topic has been touched and that any steps are being taken. This is extremely important if we want to ensure the long life of our planet

2. Do you think that smog is a real threat to our health and life?
In my opinion, it has a big impact on our health, so we should find the best, compromising solution for this problem, maybe the main streets should be air purifiers?

3. Do you drive with a diesel car? If so, do you have any solutions that reduce emissions?
I personally drive an 18-year-old car on petrol

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.

Week 4 [06-12.11.2017] This is what happens when you reply to spam email.

James Veitch is a British comedian. In today’s Ted Talk James with characteristic for himself a sense of humor shows how he deals with spam emails and why responding to junk messages may be sometimes dangerous. Questions: What do you think about James’s  way of dealing with spam? Why are junk messages legal, even though it sometimes may be a fraud? Dou you have a problem with spam? How do you deal with with it?
