European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car
makers have tried to submit.
Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to
the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases.
These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.
The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced
the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.
What is smog?
Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended
dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be
particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people.These compounds often come from incomplete combustion such as soot or ash. Also observed are
particles that come from worn car tires. The dust suspended in the values of specific micrometers is
categorized. PM 10 dust is particles above 10 micrometers. The PM 2.5 dust is less than 2.5
micrometers.
Harmfulness of PM 10 and PM 2.5
The size of the dust is important. Breathing air containing PM 10 dust results in the particles settling
in the lungs. The harmfulness of this dust can lead to asthma or lung disease.
Dust 2.5 is much more dangerous because it does not settle in the lungs but gets into it. This
dust penetrates the pulmonary alveoli into the circulatory system. The result may be atherosclerosis,
asthma, neoplastic diseases, liver damage and even stroke.
How to counteract?
Counteracting is to reduce excreted gases and dust as a result of non-total combustion. The Euro IV
standard forced the producers to use a diesel particulate filter (DPF).
DPF is a filter that catches soot particles and other unburned compounds in incomplete combustion.
When the filter fills up, the on-board computer activates the firing procedure for the remaining
compounds.Unfortunately, this filter is not long-lived and needs to be replaced every now and then. Many diesel
car users cut the DPF filter because regeneration of the filter involves high costs. This is not legal,
and yet many car owners use this procedure.
Currently, car manufacturers are complying with Euro VI standards, in which there is not only DPF.
The VAG concern in diesel engines uses AdBlue. It is a urea solution that reacts with nitrogen oxides.
They will break them into nitrogen and water vapor.
Other manufacturers prefer downsizing. That is, the withdrawal of cars with large capacity engines.
V6 or V8 engines are no longer found in new common cars. At present, three-cylinder units with small
capacities are dominating.
The reduction of exhaust emissions is to contribute to the improvement of air quality. This will have
an impact on reducing the number of people suffering from lung and cancer diseases. At the same time,

Yes, I think that the decision that the European Union is taking in this topic is completely correct. Especially as we will see the problems of climate change, health problems, unimaginable differences between modern air pollution and those that were a decade ago.

my father was smoking in his young years, and he is going to Kiev through Zaporozhye(Industrial city), their bus has some stop in it and he thought okay we have 5 minutes to smoke and i want to smoke, he get of the bus do a few breath, and he got that he don't want smoke, because of pollution

No i dont drive diesel. but the polution depends:
In "smaller" locations the main source is heating - old furnaces, bad quality coal,
using whatever you get your hands on as fuel. Add to that people burning old leaves
and other shit. The awareness of what it is causing is very low, especially with
sceptism towards anything that is "green" and "eco"
In big cities it is more from cars (exhaust, brake dust, big chunk is secondary car emission -
cars raising dust from the roads after it has fallen down). We have a big % share of diesel
cars over gasoline ones and they are the main source of PM2.5 and PM10 dust that helps
make out the smog. The age of cars and the fact that having DPF in a car is an act of
eco-terrorism (over dumb folks so called freedom) increases the emission further.
Yes, i totally agree with the implementation of emission standards by the European Union. I don't see that something can go wrong. It is a good decision that makes our enviroment cleaner and better. Nothing more to say.

Yes, definitely yes. The smog is a real threat to our health today. I know there are a lot of companies are trying to struggle with the smog, but we don't see results so far. I hope that there will be more investments in future to prevent the smog.

I don't drive a car. Honestly, don't know about solutions but i'm sure that buying electric car would be better than driving diesel car.
I must agree that we need regulations. If we like to have a clear air it's necessary to somehow regulate emissions. On the other side I don't like that the effect of these regulations is downsizing engines even in sports cars, so they lose some part of their soul.

I think it is indeed a real problem and it's certainly a threat for our health and life. Fortunately the world sees the problem and try to focus on restraining the pollution. But there are not only cars that pollute the environment, we also have factories, coal power plants and other entertainment.

I drive a petrol car and don't have any diesel powered car in my entire family. But actually it's not due to a pollution thing, in fact it is probably just a matter of preference.
2. Yes, it is, but it seems that it doesn't come from car emission. Smog in Poland is a hot topic only in Winter in the heating season. Cars are present on the streets all the time and it is very possible that certain groups of activists want to use smog to fight with cars and their owners, because of pure hatred towards all means of transport different that holy bicycle. They hate even electric cars, that's insane.

I am car guy and as I really like big old engines which would not pass any emission test today, I understand standards applied by the EU. It’s a no brainer that the quality of the air is getting worse and worse so implementing standards is vital and inevitable today.

Of course, if we look at the last edition of United Nations Climate Change Conference which was held in one of the most polluted cities in Poland – Katowice and how people from different countries spoke out about the quality of the air and how they struggled with breathing and their throat hurt then yes, I think that smog can be a threat to our health.

Yes I do. But to be honest it shouldn’t be opinion based question, that’s just the fact. There were many studies that link smog to many diseases and decreasing of human lifespan. It doesn’t matter what I think, that’s just a fact. If someone thinks that the sky is green, I don’t really care about his opinion because the facts are different ;)

Yes, my car has diesel engine. I think that the easiest and at the same time most effective way to reduce emissions is to drive car only when necessary. When it’s possible we should use public transport, walk or ride a bike.

The claim that an electric car is pure ecology is not true. The reason for all this is utilization of batteries that increase pollution.

It seems to me that these standards should be updated much more frequently, since the standard adopted in 1992 cannot solve the problem of atmospheric pollution. The automotive industry and its innovations are rapidly amenable to various modifications; besides, a lot of observations and discoveries have been made in environmental science. Based on this, we can say that perhaps this standard today will not be able to display a solution to all problems.

Definitely, there is no doubt about it. At least I have not seen in any of the sources how anyone described the positive aspects of smog. It is harmful to health, and it is obvious. In any case, this problem must be fought everywhere in the world.

I ride trams and a bicycle. So unfortunately I can not advise anything. Unless to change the car for another, or in general to change a type of transport.
In my opinion, Euro VI standards is a very good solution of air pollution problem in cities. It made manufacturers change their products, make them more ecologic. What about the adherence to these rules? It is more moral question.But on the other hand, the government can make stronger penalties for non-compliance with standards.

For sure, yes. I can give you very demonstrative example. New Deli is a very polluted city. Its smog is 1/ 3 of air in New York (pay attention on a distance)! Moreover, еhe level of air pollution was 25 times higher than the "safe standard" established by the World Health Organization!

2. Yes, I totally think that smog is a real threat especially because we live in Poland. Poland is one of the most polluted countries in Europe. Air pollution levels are incredibly high. It is scientifically proven that smog causes diseases and not only that, high CO2 levels have a direct and immediate effect on our cognitive ability.

Yes I think so, and scientists claims too. I don't think it is a debatable issue, I believe that everyone knows that.
I used to drive diesel I use petrol one now but not because it is less harmfull. Just because old car was broken and we gets a new one. I think is is not our part to reduce emission it should be regulated by cars manufacturers.
