Week 10 [12.12 - 18.12] Toucans

Toucans. Many of us only saw one in a picture or in a zoo. Perhaps a few have been lucky enough to travel to their habitat and see one there. But what are those majestic creatures?
Toucans are birds most commonly found in forests of Mexico, Paraguay and Argentina. They are relatively small, black and yellow, with very sharp claws allowing them to hold tightly to trees. Their size varies; some toucans weight as little as 130 g, and some as much as 680 g.
Toucans diet was a mystery for scientist for the longest time. At first they were thought to be carnivores. Their long beaks have small outwards-pointing spikes that resemble fangs, which led scientists to believe that it must have been used for hunting prey. It was proven false: while toucans do eat meat, it’s usually bugs or very small animals. Most of toucans diet consists of various fruit.

Speaking of the beak – it’s probably the most amazing thing about toucans. The beaks are enormous, almost as big as the rest of the bird. In fact, toucans have the largest beak in comparison to the rest of their body among all the birds in the world. Despite of that, the beak is very light. It’s made entirely of keratin, a substance our nails or birds’ feathers are made of.
While menacing, the beak is soft and in general a terrible weapon. Still, it’s a great tool for a fruit-eating bird. They help toucans to reach for food, small teeth on them are useful in separating the fruit. Despite the fact they are not good to fight, , most animals are easily scared off due to its sheer size and yellow color – a signal that something could be dangerous, poisonous or both. Last but not least, the beaks are among the best natural cooling systems ever created – the arteries in the beak can expand, releasing hot air and cooling the toucan down.
Do you like toucans, or birds in general? Would you like to see one from up close, not when its locked in cage? Would you like to own one, even though  it’s illegal?

I like to watch colorful birds in a zoo or in the wild. But generally I think I have quite common associations that birds are dirty, carry diseases and shit on everything. I certainly would not like to have a bird as a pet. But it really fascinates me how you can train some birds, especially parrots, and even observe examples of abstract thinking. I have been on many shows presenting such capabilities. Particularly intelligent birds are crows. They exhibit behaviors and skills characteristic for humans and unheard of in other animals. They have particularly good visual memory. Evolutionary adaptations are fascinating, though often they look ridiculous.

For me this bird looks nice, but I wouldn't like to have one. Because I see no point of having a pet which is not fluffy and I can't hug it. In general I don't like birds much, especially the big ones - I'm a little bit afraid of them. So I wouldn't also like to see Toucan from up close without a cage.

I like how they look - they are interesting - a little bit penguin, a little bit parrot. I would like to see it, but I'm not sure if cage would be a big problem - I can see bird through it anyway, so I can see no problem here.
I wouldn't like to have one - I can't see a point of having a bird. They stink and they are loud.

I have never seen a toucans live. For me they are not intresting. I don't know why. I would not even have a parrot at home haha :) but this bird is beautiful.

I agree that having a bird as a pet would be pretty annoying, especially in a small apartament. Still, as you said, this little guy is a perfect example of how evolution has been messing with living organisms for millions of years. A bird in tropical jungle? Let's give it an air conditioning system and put it in its beak, why not.
Unknown said…
Haven't seen a penguin in there, but you're right. If you removed the beak (which you shouldn't) you would see penguins face underneath. Toucans are a weird mix of penguin, crow, and a banana for a beak.

I have never seen any toucans in real life. I woudl prefer to see toucans in their natural habitat not in cage. It's obvious. I have never had any birds. Instead of toucan I prefer a parrot. I would teach it to use swear words. I would like to have Capuchin monkey the most. I would teach it to bring different things, give high five and smoke.

I love Toucans! They are my favorite birds and since I'm 5 I dream about having one. But my parents don't want me to go to the jungle and catch one for us. I don't understand why... Our neighbors won't know anything and it won't be a crime at all.
Toucans looks so cool!
When I was a kid I wanted to have Toucan because of the Toucan Sam on the package of some cereals.
Now when I’m older I don’t want to have Toucan or any other bird really. I don’t see the point of having a bird. You can’t play with it like with a dog, nor you can cuddle it like with a cat.

Very nice article. I have also heard some fascinating facts about them:
- that there are over forty species of toucans found in the tropical rainforest of South America
- their predators in the South American rainforest are generally large birds and wild cats. Other animals such as snakes and rodents may go after adult toucans but prefer to feed on their egg
- toucan has small wings that do not allow it to fly very far. This is not a problem for the Toucan because it does not need to travel far. It hops around the rainforest trees and may fly very short distances to obtain food.

I don't like the fact that due to their beauty toucans are often captured and sold as pets... Those who do such cruel should be definitely punished.

Toucans are very nice birds. I like theam. Also I would like to see live one some day. Beaks of these birds are awesome, it's unbelievable that they are as big. In my chichildhood I played a game Pink Panter and this bird appear in it. Now these birds remind me of this game from childhood, it's nice.

This bird looks really majestic, I wonder how nature made such awesome and colorful creatures. If you mean birds as pets - I don't like them, when I was a child I had a parrot and I remember it screaming all the time, it was a terrible noise. Maybe it was some specific kind of a parrot but they seem to like to scream from time to time even if they have food, water etc.

Birds are very interesting creatures. I'm sooo jealous because of their flying abilities. Of course birds shouldn't be locked in cages. Few months ago I fed birds in Łazienki Królewskie just by rising my hand with nuts! That the point why birds shouldn't be caged- there are supposed to fly freely. Check out my video:

I saw toucans in a zoo when I was younger, and they always looked cool, very colorful. I didn't know that owning one is illegal, but I guess there is a strong reason for that, and we should make sure that they don't disappear someday, as it'd be a real shame to see them go.

I've never seen tucan even at the zoo, only in pictures but I think they look like really amazing and interesting. I don't want to have a bird in the house beacause unlike dogs or cats you have to keep them in a cage and I think it's horrbile. I didn't expect that their beaks are lightweight.
Unknown said…
I agree they're purely majestic creatures, I like their black white and yellow look so much. I've seen one or two toucans in Warsaw zoo, I even took a photo of them, in a cage of course so there's no comparison to the ones living in the wild. Some day I'd love to travel to Argentina and Mexico, thus see them in their natural habitat, sure it would be amazing experience.
Thanks for sharing some interesting facts about these birds. I had no idea their beat has spike resembling fang and for that reason they were thought to be carnivorous.

Very interesting article, I didn't know these facts about toucans. I remember them from my childhood, unfortunately I couldn't see them in real life. That's why I would love to see them from up close one day.
I wouldn't like to own toucan, I think it would be very harmful for this animal. Its place, like most animals, is in real nature.
To be honest I don't know what to say. I am not into birds but I would like to see them in their natural habitat.

I found some interesting facts about toucans. I have never known it is such interesting animal.

1. they camouflage in the rainforest thanks to their bright colorful markings
2. toucans build their nest in tree hollows created by other animals
3. when toucan sleeps, his beak temperature can be reduced by about 10 deg. Celsius in a few minutes

Since my childhood, my grandfather was teaching me that birds are amazingly beautiful creatures and that we as humans has to help them when they are in need. It was very fun building food houses for birds every winter. I was always happy when birds were coming and eating food we put them.
I’ve seen toucans only in cages in the zoo. They look very clever, comparing to most of the birds. I like unusual animals and the disproportion of toucan makes him a great candidate to be called unusual.
So probably it’s hard to be a toucan. Imagine yourself to have a nose which is a half size of your whole body. Toucans deserves respect for this :D

I've never seen any Toucans in real life, only in nature documentaries. These animals seem quite interesting. Personally I'm not a big fan of birds but I'm curious one family of these animals - hummingbirds. Did you know that they are can fly backwards or that their intake of food could be equal total five times the their body weight per day?! That's interesting, isn't it ?
It would be great to see this majestic creature in its natural habitat. I'm not into birds but it would be great to watch how it behaves etc.
I would not like to own toucan, it is the wild animal and should live in its natural habitat.
The mechanism of how they do it is very interesting :)
Unknown said…
Good thing is that this nose is REALLY light. It looks like it's heavier than the bird itself, but in reality it weights around 1/20 of the birds mass. Still, respect where it's due. Living with such a beak can't be easy.
Unknown said…
I agree, especially since Toucans aren't really accustomed to our climate and might be very uncomfortable with the temperature.
Unknown said…
That looks awesome. If people would stop treating animals as toys perhaps birds trusting humans like that wouldn't be uncommon. Imagine feeding a toucan like that.
I like to watch animals, espacially those species that have some unusual features or abilities. I saw Toucans a few times in zoos. I would not like to own one, since I believe that such animals shouldn't be kept in captivity. However, I'm not sure about the zoos as animals have professional care in that kind of places and otherwise we wouldn't be able to admire them.

I don't have a big love to birds, but I like to discover something new. So, yes, I would like to see Toucans. Unfortunately, I've never seen them before neither in zoo, nor in their natural habitat. They look pretty extraordinary, so I hope to take a look at one of those in some point of my life. Also, I hope I'll see them in the nature to watch how they behave in real life.

Well to be honest for me it's just a bird. Nothing special. Of course they look very nice and they are very colorful but this is not some special thing which distinguish their from another birds. Like author of this presentation said I think the most interesting thing in this kind of bird is their beak. For me it's nothing special just another bird (of course less popular then pigeon) with nice colorful beak

I've seen this kind of birds only in TV but I it's could be very interesting experience to see Toucans little bit closer. This animal looks like nice parrot :D
Unfortunately, i seen toucans only in the movies but they look really beautiful birds. They remind me a little penguins thanks to its the white tie. I have question- do you know whether i can raise them at home like parrots? They look rather at the birds which we will never be able to put in small cage.

Toucans may be beatiful, but in general I don't like birds. The birds I hate most are pigeons. They make a lot of mess and spread diseases. I think people feeding pigeons in cities should be punished, because it causes problems with them.

Unfortunately I have not seen it, but I think that they are very interesting birds.

I really like toucans. I think that they are beautiful birds. I have never seen one live but I would love to. I don’t like the idea of having animals in cages and taking them away from their habitant so I would not like to have one at home.

Well, i don't think that having a bird is a good idea for me, my cats wouln't be scared of his enormous beak at all i think :) Maybe because of global warming we will have those birds in our country, who knows?
Of course you can hug them :) I have a friend who has a hawk and white owl, and as the hawk is for work and training, the owl is just "to love" and hugging :) There is a difference between the way you take care of a cat and an owl, but in the end both of them need food, attention and hugging.

These articles are getting better and better. Birds are forming a colorful and varied environment outside our windows. Well, maybe no in the cities like Warsaw where you have only “flyting rats” pigeons or sparrows. Of course, you can sometimes spot a colorful beautiful bird like jay or great tit (love the name) but you should have go to a park if you want to see them. Most colorful bird are naturally in rain forest like toucan for example. I prefer in natural habitat. Nope, I like to see them free and in their natural environment.

I'm not a real bird fan, but of course it is nice to go to the zoo and look for some beautiful, colorful birds and observe them for a little while. But no, I would not like to have one at home, birds in my opinion are not meant to be locked in the cage - they have wings to fly under the sky, not to sit in the cage of somebody's house.

I had no occasion to see a toucan, but I can imagine what a wonderful bird must be. Often the birds fly to my garden and I admire them from the window, but I never had the chance to touch the bird. I wonder what it feels like. Birds are very intelligent creatures and in addition are able to fly. I saw on the Internet what a crow can do to get to the food. See for yourself: https://youtu.be/AVaITA7eBZE
Nice, I used to build bird houses too :D I like to watch birds flying up high. It reminds me of what the freedom really is about. Speaking of freedom, I think that a bird should never be locked in a cage. I would love to see toucan in its natural environment which is yet another reason to visit South America.

I have seen toucans only in documentaries on TV. Personally I consider they, and especially their beaks, look majestically. I love their intensive colours. With owning one of them...I'm a fervent opponent of this, toucans, like other wild animals should live in their natural environment.

Toucans are beautiful, they look like a delicious, exotic fruit.
I never knew they ate meat or that they had tiny, saw like teeth on their beaks. I also thought they were bigger. I wish to see a living toucan one day, but I definitely wouldn't like them imprisoned in a home. I generally think keeping birds at home is weird and I don't like it.
I like birds, they are beautiful, especially sparrows. They're cute and fluffy and often sit on my window.

I am not into birds, but I like parrots, penguins and also toucans. They are so beautiful. Every time I see them on pictures I can't stop thinking of how awesome mother-nature is. Of course, I would be happy to see the real toucan and to watch it in the habitant.
But the idea of owning the toucan sounds bad, the poor thing wouldn't be very happy to live in a european apartment, I guess. So I'd better own a traditional dog:)
Unknown said…
I am not really a bird fan but I would be happy to see toucan in real life. It seems really beautiful. However I definitely wouldn't like to own one!
If it comes to having an animal illegally, I would really like to have a monkey, but I feel like it is better for them to live in their natural habitat.
I also think that those kind of animals should be kept in their original habitat. Saying that, I would also like to taste one :D I wonder whether there's a huge difference in taste between toucan meat and for example chicken or duck.
To be honest I have never seen toucan in real life. I wish I had but unfortunately I haven't. They are beautiful and magnificent animals. They are very rare here in Europe, even in ZOO so I don't think they should be kept locked. I don't like the idea that people keep those animals in cages just for their own entertainment. It is just wrong. Animals are not toys. They are alive and they feel so it's ridiculous to keep them locked. I wish all people knew that. But it's not and this a shame.

World of animals is still full of mystery. One of the interesting example is Russian deep-sea fisherman who publish pictures of creeps how looks frighteningly and weirdly. His discovers are proof that world is full of animals we dont know and we are not aware of their existence and features. That somewhat exciting for me.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.

Questions: What do you think about James’s  way of dealing with spam? Why are junk messages legal, even though it sometimes may be a fraud? Dou you have a problem with spam? How do you deal with with it?
