Week 5 (02.11-08.11) Card Games

Each and everyone of us played a card game at least once in their life. Maybe it was a War or Hold’em Poker using standard French 52-card deck. Maybe it was a Tarot. Or maybe it was something much less known and newer.

History and origin

Playing cards dates back as early as the 9th century. They were found in China during the Tang dynasty. Su E, Tang dynasty writer described Princess Tongchang, a daughter of the Emperor Yizong of Tang, playing the “leaf game” in 868 with members of the Wei clan.

They were also known in India, Persia and Egypt. And it probably was Mamluk Egypt where Europeans learned how to play cards in the 14th century. After many centuries of evolution they became the 52-card deck which we all know and which is (much more rarely) known as French deck.
Probably the most popular card game is Texas Hold’em a variant of Poker. It uses full 52-card French deck and needs at least two players. It is mostly played for cash because being a psychological game it has low entertainment value when there is no stake.

Another very popular card game is aforementioned War. This in contrast to Hold’em or in fact any Poker variant is very simple pure entertainment, zero psychology game and because of that it is mostly popular among children.

Non-traditional card games

It is easy to think that French 52-card deck is the only deck used to play cards these times. It is not. People always look for new means of entertainment and new ways of monetization. The 20th century gave us many card games sold in a collectible card game format or CCG. This means that you don’t buy a ready to play deck but instead you buy a small subset of possible cards from which you create your own decks. On top of that those cards are in most cases sold in packages containing random cards.
The best known game of CCG format is Magic the Gathering, a game published in 1993 and having approximately twenty million players now in 2015. Besides being a card game, Magic the Gathering authors hire one of the best illustrators in the world and its cards are often considered an art. Many people collect those cards because of this reason.

I think so with the phenomenon of card games for a long time does not pass. from primary school I observed how popular portal kurnik.pl and how many people use it. It would seem he will be popular among teenagers, but the vast majority of them were people at work, which of boredom play games in the internet. I guess the same is the phenomenon of solitaire, which is automatically installed on every computer. What is interesting is was not created in order to provide entertainment to computer users, but to teach then how to use your computer.

My boyfriend bought poker chips a few months ago and we learned how to play Texas Hold'em. I didn't really expect it to be so fun but it's really exciting when there are more people playing and when there is money involved ;)

I would call myself a casual gamer and I'm not that much into card games but I like to play from time to time and it's interesting to read about some of the history. I'm sure many of you heard about a game called Heartstone ;) And I think it's the next step that non-traditional card games are taking.

Even though I'm a causal gamer as I mentioned before I really, really like movies where people play poker and other card games and I find it to be really exciting. Have you seen the movie "Rounders" with Matt Damon? It's really cool.

This is definitely timeless entertainment! The best way is that it is no the game but a tool, so you can create so many games as you want :)

I only tried this, hmm, lets call it traditional card games, like makao, war etc and I really enjoyed them as a kid. To be honest I get quite bored with them, but there is always something new that I fancy playing :)

I have never tried magic, I don't like one thing about it - you need to buy a lot of new cards to have fun. With traditional cards it is great because you have one (sometimes two) deck and you can play anything you want.

I think the card games will always be on top. I really like play in Macao. I always played with my family in it, when there was no electricity. There are various rules of this game but it is fun.
Now you can play cards on the internet with strangers, but I prefer to play in the traditional way holding cards in my hands. With opponent in front.

Each of us tried at least once playing classic 52 card deck games. In 80s and first half of the 90s, it was probably the most common mobile entertainment. People used to play while travelling, on any sort of trips and in general, whenever they had some spare time being out of home. Then market rapidly became filled with mobile electronic gadgets like a Gameboy or any other portable game consoles which actually took classic card's place. As the market grew card games producers realised it is in fact an opportunity to spread virtual versions of their product. Nowadays we don't need physical cards to play, via internet and many applications we have access not only to standard card games, but many others, like mentioned in article - magic the gathering. On the other hand, tired of sitting in front of the screen, teenagers each day become more into standard ways of playing cards and choose to buy their physical versions.

Card games are convenient and easily portable type of entertainment so I really prefer it. Card is good game on the parties or in the travel. When I was in high school is the most popular card game was Macao. We played on the breaks and even after school through the Internet (by www.kurnik.pl I recommened this website) instead of learning to secondary school certificate. ;D

Always I used to play cards with my grandfather as a little girl. Usually it was games like War, Macao, Thousand. Some times ago I often played more complicated games like 3-5-8 or kanasta. Actually I prefer board games like Rummicub, Game of Thrones or Dixit (it's not typical board game it's rather card game). For me board games are more integrating people and funnier. Card games associate me with casino, money and hazard.

I am not a very good card player – I’ve played Makao and War as a child but since then I’ve lost all interest in it. I like watching people play cards though – I really enjoyed observing my friends play Poker. The same thing applies to watching Poker in movies. I remember that my grandfather used to spend all his afternoons setting up solitaire. He had a very beautiful deck of cards and I enjoyed looking at kings, queens and jacks. This is the most interesting part of cards for me – the design. I would like to show you some great card designs:

Oh, really? I didn't know that Solitare on MS Windows was created to teach how to use PC. I always thought that it was installed because it is very basic game, everybody knows and everybody likes. Unfortunately it is not installed on every computer. Since I don't use Windows I miss Solitare so much...

I considered including paragraph about Hearthstone to this article but I decided I shouldn't. It's not a card game. It's a computer game where you use virtual cards. I belive personal contact with others, real communication and interaction, bluffing with your face and expression all of those are very important aspect of any card game. Hearthstone takes it all out as you never see or talk or interact in any way (ok, besides those stupid emotes so overused by some players that you mute everybody) and because of that it is something much lesser to me. It's not that I don't like it. I do and I play it quite often but I will always prefer to take a deck to a pocket and go to a pub, order a beer or two and play Magic the Gathering or other card games with friends.

Yes, games like Magic the Gathering can be quite expensive as in the first place they are tool to make money for stock traded companies. Only after that there is entertainment aspect. I know many people who hundreds PLN into they decks and quite a few who invested thousands. Of course not in one time investment but rather over years but still it is not game for everybody.

Yeah, exactly. Card games besides entertainment have very strong social aspect. Any computer game like aforementioned Hearthstone take this social aspect away from the play and then experience becomes inferior and boring.
Unknown said…
Like few hours ago. ;) Ok, it was Hearthstone so more a computer game then cards game. But it wasn't more then few days since I last played some real cards. Wednesday I believe, and last Saturday before that.
I can play some of the most popular card games - macao, bridge, poker, hearts, etc. - but I never considered it a passion, more of a time-killer :) However, in my high-school bridge was such a popular game that the principle had to ban it, because people started playing during breaks, didn't manage to finish before the lesson started and either tried to postpone the lesson, or ditch school and finish playing in the computer room :)

However, I think it's good to have at least one 'standard' 52 cards deck, because it's really universal - you can play so many games using only those 52 cards.
Unknown said…
As I wrote in reply to some previous comments I don't like computerised card games, or board games, or anything what had social aspect before becoming computer game. I feel it is inferior. I play from time to time Magic the Gathering via Internet with a friend on Skype call but it's not the same. I prefer real life social experience so much.
Unknown said…
Yup, Macau (or Mau Mau as this the english name for this game) is the game to be played in mixed environment where not everybody likes card games and most people don't play them. You can be almost certain that 95% have at least once played this game.
Unknown said…
Hmm... Game of Thrones and Dixit in one sentence. ;) Those two games stand in direct opposition with each other. Game of Thrones is all about betraying and backstabbing other players. A friend described it once as a game during which people die and divorces become a fact. And then Dixit. A game which is all about how well you know other players. How well you understand each other. From my experience close friends who can read each other thoughts and cooperate have best chances to beat other players. Yeah, those games provide the most intensive social experience of all games I ever played (and from what I read and heard - form all games, period). GoT - the experience of betrayal, Dixit - the experience of friendship.

Thanks fot the post about card games. Im not big fan of such a form spending time, but it's nice to know sth more about the history etc.. Playing card games is a great oportunity to break the ice with someone ( I reccomend it to shy people), or for old firends to have a good time with each other.
Regards to tournaments: It would be boring for me watching others playing some card games
Unknown said…
That's what I am talking about! Cards can have so beautiful design! Or fun. Recently we saw what happens when popular stripe-comic author makes a card game with good gameplay designers. They become the most backed Kickstarter project of all times and Explode a lot of Kittens.

I agree. I like bridge too. My grandfather thought me it. Later I played it with friends in high school. Though in my school games wasn't banned. If something started to become so popular as you say there were created official activity clubs. For example I used to visit roleplaying games activity club during my high school time.
Unknown said…
Nah, tournaments are not about watching at all. They are about playing. ;) You go there to play and if you're good enough to win. Anyway I'm glad you like my article.

I have never heard and I have never thought about history of playing cards. Of course many years ago I have played a card game- War :D, and other less known. I just don’t remember their names.
I have known Poker but I have never played it. When I think about Poker I think about play for cash and roulette, casino and addiction :P Second game which you’ve quoted reminds me of my childhood. Hah, my brother was playing a Magic the Gathering. He had many various cards but he growed out of its.
Thanks for your article. You’ve helped me to come back my childhood ;)
Unknown said…
Card game reminds me of childhood. I think it is a rarity that someone who is in the same age use traditional cards. People choose some virtual option then they can play cards everytime and with everyone in the world. It's amazing how it can evolve as traditional and old game

The only card game I can play is War, because I’ve never played any other card game. I think it’s time to get familiar with Poker, even it’s illegal in Poland.
Michal Kulesza said…
Wow, really? That explains everything!
In late 90's my mother was forced to play Solitare at work because she didn't know how to use mouse :)

Poker is legal in Poland as long as it's not played with real money outside casino.

I agree with everyone once played cards :) That war was my favorite game when I was a child. I often played it, but is true that there is not much thinking and after a few games you can get easily bored.
Currently, my favorite card game and the only one which I play is Texas Hold'em poker. This is undoubtedly the game which you have to anticipate, think and observe your opponents.
Often, winning does not depend on what cards you had but how you behaved when you were playing and how well you got confused your opponents.
You can not play this game without chips. The game automatically loses sense. If everyone have a pot of chips there automatically is rivalry atmosphere and everyone wants to get as many as possible. In addition, everyone should come with some amount of money. If you gamble, everyone gets more serious and cares more not to lose. In Poland it is still illegal but I think a game for fun at home will not lead any problems however, There is always the opportunity to go to the casino and try your luck there.

Same as most of you, war was my favourite game when I was kid, together with 'Piotrus' (however other cards where used).

I can play War, Piotrus and Texas Holdem - but I'm not really big fun of card games - I prefer board games (but without cards, please!).

Several years ago I was playing similar game to Magic The Gathering - Pokemon Cards :)

That was very funny, we had set of rules, and one stated that after won match winner can take one of cards of his opponent. It was really big issue at my school, when one of losers complained to his mother and she came to school, said that someone stole her sons cards. We were prohibited to play it there so we installed PC version on one of library computers - it wasn't the same. I still have my cards somewhere.
Sometimes I enjoy play poker with my friends. Nowadays many people still enjoy playing poker because it involves taking risk and a chance on a future outcome. Mobile game uploads are replacing traditional poker games, but never the less rules are same. Lower level of mathematics and statistics being thought at schools is probably the main reason why kids do not understand card games any more. It’s can also be very profitability to be a poker player and earn good money on playing poker.

Sometimes I think that War is the first card game every child learns :) I used to be a big fan as a kid, I could spend hours playing with my friends. But these days it quickly gets boring. In my teen years I played Kemps a lot. Now I usually play either Hearts or Mau Mau. That's for traditional card games of course.
Recently I finally got a grasp of The Witcher's Gwent. The game itself is fine, but to be honest it's mostly about pretty cards :) Also let's not forget about famous Cards against Humanity, ahh many hours of indecent fun...
Unfortunately, unlike many people here, I can't play poker at all, no one has ever taught me and I think I'd like to play it just for fun sometimes.

Card games are fun! They are a perfect form of entertainment for bigger and smaller groups. Cards against Humanity mentioned by Ola are on my top list. They provide hours of laughter with friends. For more serious time, I would turn to poker, but I'm not good at it at all. Maybe it's a matter of practice. I still play Magic the Gathering sometimes, if I manage to arrange it with the few people that also collect the cards. It's a shame that it's such an expensive hobby...

Yea, Solitare is cult game. There was even some short funny films about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1729HkLI18c I like them.
@cezarygoralski Exacly! a lof of peoples use kurnik or other website beocuse of there bored and they cant leave they sit. It funny but it true.

I like to watch movies about poker too, even more I like to watch match of poker tournaments. When players playing for real money. Sometimes its a lot of money. in this year Domini Pańka win one of this cup and he win 5mln of pln. This is serious game and its it fun to watch. It very interestng to see what players will do when they get good cards and what they do when they dont hve good cards.

i think almost every new game have some kind of payment model. I remember times when counter strike was game were everyone was interested in to watch how someone play in game, they look on tactics and some best shot. Now its looks differend all new players is interested in to watch opening a box where someone can win skin to weapon. This is sick
Unknown said…
exacly, I like to play in card games too and there is always fun to play with friends. Its funny to watch they try to win, how they are you nervous about they loose. each person have they own way to play and its fun.

For start I propose to you to watch match of domini panka in finals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0LSnrWSDGw
This can open eyes what is going on in this game

I think so too, some years ago card games was the best, we play in lessons, in breaks and after school. This was every exciting and fun. I remember that we even play in tabo game and monopoly. This was heavy and I remember that this was much more fun than computer games.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
