Week 12 (08.06 - 14.06) Let's get muddy!

Looking through the previous articles I noticed that many of you like to be physically active. This week I would like to tell you about a couple of fitness events combining endurance and strength. Inspired by military obstacle courses, they are a challenge both for runners and those who train crossfit or similar forms of fitness.

Tough Mudder

The first organized event that I discovered was the Tough Mudder. Right now it takes place all around the world and already over 1.3 million participants have taken part in this challenge. The first race was held in 2010 by Will Dean and Guy Livingstone, two British Harvard post-graduates. Its goal was to put physical and mental strength to test.
In general a Tough Mudder is a 10-12 miles run that is made up of 20-25 various obstacles. These kind of competitions focus on teamwork, hence a lot of obstacles are almost impossible to complete without the assistance of another person. The variety of challenges that participants face is overwhelming. Not only do they have to have a great endurance (it’s hard to run ~15km without any preparation), but they have to face climbing over walls, swimming in ice cold water or even passing through wires with electricity hanging over their path.

Runmageddon

A couple of weeks after discovering the Tough Mudder I came across posters adevertising the Runmageddon. It is a polish version of this intense obstacle course. What caught my attention was the distinction between three different toughness levels. You can sign up for: Runmageddon Recruit, Classic or Warrior. This are the basic categories, but that’s not all. Occasionally they organize special events like Mini-Runmageddon or Mountain Runmageddon Hardcore (this one sounds insane…). What distinguishes each type from another is the distance that you have to run (5-15km) and the number of obstacles to tackle. To participate you have to sign up in advance and pay the entrance fee that not only covers your starting number but also a tech t-shirt, electronic time measuring chip, deposit bag, a dog tag, bandana and cold drinks at the finish line. If you sign up as a team it’s possible to get some nice discounts.

Men Expert Survival Race

This is the obstacle course that got me most interested. It also has different levels of difficulty: Warrior – 5km and 20 obstacles, Hero – 10km and 30 obstacles. Some of the obstacles that I quite exited to face in this year’s edition are:

‘Elektrofaza’ – A 4x6m cage with electrical wires hanging down. The organizers are saying that this will be a shocking and electrifying finish of the run.
Triceps Killer:

Walk above the water:

About two week before the run an interactive map is published where participants can get a closer look at the course that they will have to tackle.

Anyone wants to join me and get a little muddy?

Comments

After many tv programs this subject is known to me. During career days I met a guy that tried to convince me to participate runmageddon. That was the first time I heard about this, but after visiting their facebook fan page I was surprised that they have almost 60 thousands of likes. This must be remarkable experience but I would rather stay watching other participating than try by myself.

I think that in order to to participate in such an event you have to train regularly for months, you can not go without physical form. Personally I will stay being a fan of the usual occupations of running or swimming, I do not need such experience.

I didn't know that Runmageddon is so popular, 60k likes is a lot! I have to agree with you that to participate in this kind of events you have to be in a good shape. It's important to have enough strength to successfully pass through all the obstacles without endangering your health.

I must admit that it looks quite cool to watch such an event but I'm not sure I would like to take part in it. I'm just not a very sporty person ;) Anyway I think it looks incredibly cool.

Here is a funny video of inflatable obstacle course. It may be a little bit more "childish" than your example but I think it seems to be extremely fun.

Wow, I have never heard about Runmageddon but it sounds really cool! I find myself as a sporty person but I am not sure weather I am fit enought to try it. It think it must be extremely hardcore activity. I prefer crossfit or gym ;)

Oh this inflatable obstacle run looks like so much fun! Thanks for sharing the video, I haven't heard about such events before :)

If you're doing crossfit I would encourage you to give it a try sometime. Maybe you could take part in Runmageddon - mini, just to get the taste of how it looks like? I'm participating in the Survival Race Warrior next week, so if you're interested I can tell you how it went :)

Frequently I heard about this kind of activity but I never had a chance to participate because the best option is to have a team with which you start. To have a team you must garher people willing and in good condition, sometimes it is very hard because people are undecided. I would like try to start. It must be good adventure.

Maybe one day I will got dirty this way :)

Before this I would like to try myself in "Bieg Rzeźnika" - over doubled marathon (77,7km) in Bieszczady. Out of 1500 participants only 300 finished it. You have to run in team with 1 partner where you help each other.

How long have you been training for Survival Race?
Julia Osiak said…
Yeah, I heard about Bieg Rzeźnika, but that's too hardcore for me :p
I've been preparing myself for this race since April, I hope that I'll be able to finish it :)

My small town has massive amount of posters about this survival race. I found it really interesting but I’m not quite sure if I’m strong enough to finish that race. It sounds really cool and fun but of course it is not for everyone.

Well, It sounds very interesting to me and I'd like to take part in something like that someday. This kind of events requires a good physical shape, so I'll have to spend months in a gym or doing crossfit. However, I think it's worth it and it will give you unforgettable memories and feelings. :)

Some of my friends (mostly men :P ) were attending runmageddon and they absolutely loved it! And they even retake part in next "series", that shows how nice it is :) Personally I have never attend event like this and I think I am not that kind of person who would enjoy it :)
Unknown said…
I admit, it looks really cool. However, I don't think I will participate in that kind of event in the nearest future. It probably requires a lot of regular physical training, which is not my favourite thing. I'm more of a recreational runner. However, it would be definitely fun to watch similar race.

In my team men are also in majority, but I managed to convince 4 other girls to run with me. I'm sure that if we need some help the guys will be more than willing to give us a hand :)

My girlfriend took part in the last Runmageddon. This was a great challenge for her, but she managed to complete the run. I am thinking of participating in this event with her next time, as this is a great test of your will and persistence. Sooo… keep your fingers crossed for me!

Strange, I've never heard of any of these events. I don't understand why, because they definitely look cool! I would enjoy watching it for sure. But while I don't mind getting a bit muddy, I wouldn't last long in such a competition. I'm not strong or sporty enough I'm afraid. Anyway, it must an amazing experience for those who are fit and willing to take up the challenge.

Nice! I never heard about that event. I like challenges and I'm not afraid of mud, so maybe someday I will participate in the Runmageddon ("mini" seems to be good for my skills). Great thanks for your presentation.

I have many friends who finished such an events and all of them encourage me to try it one day. Looks like great opportunity for a shot of adrenaline, great time and good memories :) I'll participate in such an event for sure!

Wow it impressed me. It’ s really great. My first association in conjunction with it is commandos and their workout. I agree with you that the third example is the most attractive. Although in my opinion it is a little crazy. I think that it is great in the one hand. People can feel freedom and release. But in the other I think that it is very aggressive and impulsive sport. What do you think about my vision?
I don't think I would try any extreme form of activity - it's a bit too much like those American military camps seen in the movies ;)

However, some time ago on the TV I've seen something I may try - Mud Football :D There is even a thing called Mud Bowl. You can see the pictures from it here.. I could try it, because it looks more like fun and getting dirty than something requiring some incredible skill (and I'm terrible at football!)
Tough Mudder - > freaking awesome, lot of fun and tears, I want to try it instantaneously. The obstacles are designed like adult version of kids playground.

I've already heard about the runmageddon and I'm pretty sure that I'll finally sign in! I seems to be a great adventure, but I think that I'm still not prepared for such demanding challenge. I love sport almost under every form and this one seems to combine a lot of them. Usual runs has become a little bit boring for me so I'm looking forward to another runmageddon!

I heard about this kind of events. It is a great form of leisure activities. Players taking part in the competition can feel like a real commandos.
It is also nice that it is a team sport. I personally prefer team sports than individual. Playing any sport helps to keep good condition and endurance but team sports are developing also other skills such as cooperation and responsibility.

Currently, my health unfortunately didn't allow me to participate in the competition, however, as soon as possible for sure I'll try to take part in one of these events.
I think it can be a really good way for boys to try themleves, to run, scream, maybe like a video game but in a real life...
These seems a little bit too tough for me, but I understand the idea of testing both vital and mental abilities of people. Whenever I run I have to struggle between being lazy (run shorter distance) and being super active and cover a long distance. That might become a spiritual experience.

Your article reminded me that I forgot to go running for a long time :) maybe one day I'll take part in such event, I find it quite funny. I always had "muddy hobbies" so getting dirty in Runmageddon won't be something new. For me, more interesting is that if my whole body would stand up to the end of race. This kind of race is something completely different from typical 20km run, it is closer to triathlon than to running. My dream is to tak part in Norseman triathlon.

I feel so dirty just after running and sweating a bit that I have to take a shower immediately - I don't think getting muddy is the best activity for me :) I'm sticking to running and I'm leaving all these massacres for real commandos and people who enjoy it. But it's good to read about it and learn something new. I like watching people struggle on obstacles, it is really amazing. I recommend this video of Kacy Catanzaro on American Ninja Warrior: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sng5depwRNM She is tiny and really incredible, maybe even "not human" as the commentators state.

I think that it isn't the way to spent my free time. I haye being muddy. I can be really tired after hard workout at the gym but not smeared with mug
Unknown said…
Never before I have heard about runmageddon. It looks quite interesting. I think that this is an interesting idea to spend free time for some. Maybe someday I will try this kind of "rest".

I think that obstacle courses may be a great adventure and an interesting pasttime. In our times we're literally forced to lead a sedentary lifestyle and such activities may have a positive impact on our mental and physical health.
I've heard about Runmageddon before, although I don't think I would attend such event myself. I did attend a marathon once and I didn't find it as enjoyable as others might have had. When it comes to fitness I prefer the good old fashioned gym where I can train at my own pace :). Although I might consider attending such "extreme marathon" sometime in the future, I'd do it only for a challenge and probably with a group of friends!

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
