Week 2 [14.10-20.10.19] Do You sleep enough?

Do You know what happens with Your body and mind when You don't sleep enough hours during our 24-hour cycle? I've found extremly interesting speech, performed by incredible Matt Walker, in which he explained everything that You did not know about the exceptional ability that we all have - sleep.

1. Yes, definitely :)
2. No,not really i was always cautions to get enough sleep.
3. Yes, i was already aware about consequences of not getting enough sleep that your organism requires. One of my passions is working out and there are a couple of the most important keys to it - workout itself :), providing your organism right amount of micro and macro nutrients and SLEEP. The last two are the ones that are responsible for your growth as muscles are damaged during the workout but are re-build by sleep and food. I've also heard it from another sources but even not getting enough sleep for 1 day can lower your testosterone level significantly so that you'll have to restore it to previous state for ever over a week.

It's great to hear, as from my experience, people tend to undersleep constantly and it's extremly easy to notice bad influence of this behaviour on their health or appearance.

1. Yes, as I don't feel tired and sleepy during the day, I think I sleep enough.

2. No, as I said before, I'm trying to sleep enough, so I didn't have any of these symptoms.

3. I knew that sleeping is important for our organism, but I wasn't aware of many consequences that were mentioned. I didn't know e.g. that it may increase probability of getting cancer. I think such information are important and should be spread to make people aware how their routines impact their health.

Yes, sleep is very important indeed so I always try to get as good quality sleep as it is possible, but still giving up sleep happens sometimes.
I'm pretty sure I had some of the bad symptoms after sleepless night.
Sleep plays an essential role in our health, but I didn't know about all of the presented effects of lack of sleep.

1. Yes, I mostly do.
2. No. I happen not to sleep enough when I have a lot of things to do, but I haven't observed any bad symptoms of lack of sleep.
3. I knew sleep is very important but I didn't realize that lack of sleep can lead to such serious consequences like cancer.
1. I try as much as i can :) I know that this is very important.
2.No, in my case i never had any of these bad symptoms and i'm really glad.
3.I heard a lot about consequences of lack of sleep, some of them i knew already but some of them were a big surprise for me. I'm glad that i watched it so I can go to sleep now haha

Of course not I am student, how the hell can I sleep well?

Yes, i have few of them 8 months of the year since October 2016.

Yes, getting a good sleep especially after some physical work as it raises the temperature of body is one of the greatest thing on Earth.

I try to sleep enough. I always had issue with falling asleep. I was too emotional and these feelings disturb me and successfully didn't let me sleep. Right now, I have work and studies, and I don't have time to think about life, emotions and that helps me falling asleep.

2. Have You ever had any of the bad symptoms described during the talk due to lack of sleep?

When I was younger I used to catch a lot of infections and I had really weak immune system. Probably it was connected with my problems with sleep and didn't get enough of it. No other symptoms :)

3. Do You believe that sleeping impacts us as much as Matt Walker described it?

Yes, I believe that sleep has huge power. I can see that watching myself and my reactions during different periods of my life. Every time I'm well-rested I'm in a good mood, I'm full of energy, get less infections and think clear, what has an impact on better learning.

Yes, I could safely say that most of the time I sleep enough - it's about 8 hours. I work a lot but I also always take care of my sleep as I can't properly function without it. As a side note, I must say I hate to sleep because I would like to have more time for other activities :-)
Yes I have. When my sleep is too short I feel more vulnerable to deseases, I can't think clear and can't make any decision. I'm also angry and in bad mood overall. So yes, I know the symptoms from the video.
Like I've stated above I believe in that tremendous impact of sleep and know it from my own experience.

1. Yes, I sleep enough, it is enough for me to sleep around 8 hours a day, and it is strange that I will be tired if I sleep more than 12 hours.
2.No, to be honest, I am kinda healthy, i never had bad symptoms and I seldom had lack of sleep.
3. Yes, I believe without a doubt, also I have my own opinion about sleep that once I am tired, I sleep, there is no fixed time for me to sleep during the day, I think my brain can be submissive if trained.

I think I have some kind of sleep disorder because I either don't sleep or sleep too much. Of course, I sometimes sleep these perfect 8 hours, but it is very rare for me. I'm just a person who thinks too much and sometimes I spend the whole night thinking about these thoughts.

Mostly I feel worse, I think slower, I make logical mistakes. Generally I feel like a worse me.

To be honest, this video scared me a little bit about the testicles of course :p but to be honest most of the things were known to me which doesn't change the fact that I should get some kind of sleep norm.

1. Recently, I try to pay due attention to this issue. Since in my life before there was not enough sleep, and of course I realized that this was not right. Now I am trying to deal with this, no matter what important tasks I would have to solve instead of sleep. You can assume this video is one of the factors on the way to this.

2. At a time when there was almost no sleep in my life, of all the symptoms, of course, I felt general fatigue. But fortunately, there were no such pronounced symptoms. Probably, most people think about it at the moment when these symptoms appear, but then it is already too late. Okay, I'll go to sleep.

3. Sure. It really is. If you dig deep, there was nothing new in this video, but the speaker managed to put everything together and using numbers and the right facts to prove how important sleep is. This is true and I agree with all that has been said.

1. Yes, I sleep long enough. In my case, 7-8 hours of sleep is enough for organism recovery
2. As I mentioned, I fall asleep and have no health problems due to lack of sleeping. Sometimes I even sleep for 3 hours but a strong espresso puts me on my feet and I never feel weakened
3. Yes, I totally agree that sleep affects our entire day. If we do not start it regenerated enough after the day before, our bodies may not function properly. Our concentration is weakened, we make bad decisions, we are slow and lethargic.
1. No, I definitely do not sleep enough. Usually, if it's not a weekend, I sleep 4 to 5 hours every night (sometimes I also take naps during the day though). It results from the way I function and from some problems with falling asleep. The number of hours in which I actually sleep has changed strictly when I started my studies. But this topic is more complicated.

2. To be honest, I don't have any significant problems with sleeping shorter than the average amount of sleep. What bothers me a lot is the absolute lack of sleep, which fortunately happens very rarely. None of the problems mentioned by Matt Walker seem to concern me (or some of they actually do, but I just don't notice it, and it's possible that the effects will not be revealed until the future). Most of all complications I'm afraid of Alzheimer's. Any problems related to the heart and circulatory system, also cancer are very worrying as well.

3. I think sleep is one of the most important activities in our lives. By all means, I agree with Matt Walker that sleep affects both our physical and mental health. From my own experience I know that a complete lack of sleep is able to completely ruin my next day, starting from having problems with taking a shower or traveling by public transport. The feeling can be compared to being drunk. In summary, sleep drastically affects the way we function, the ability to absorb new knowledge, to remember, or just the way we feel.

1. I always try to sleep well and long enough, but it is not always possible because of my high intensity of living and large number responsibilities I have.

2. Unfortunately I had. The lack of sleep can really be a terrible horror. I once had a streak without about 40 hours of sleep and at some point minor halucinations appeared.

3. I definately do, for me sleeping is a key for long and healthy life.
Answering your questions:

1. Of course I sleep enough, about 8-9 hours because of some physical activity. At weekends it's a bit different because I'm with friends in city.

2. Fortunately, I didn't experience it. And I am very happy about this and I care about the right amount of sleep.

3. I think that yes, sleep is a very important factor in human life, irreplaceable. The right amount of sleep causes you to behave differently during the day. We are rested, full of energy and ready for action.
I actually made some research on sleep by myself earlier so I know something about this. First of all sleep is the most crucial thing in life. It affects everything. Hormonal levels, ability to focus, well being, social skills and so on. But the amount sleep which specific person needs isn't just 7-9 hours. It doesn't work like that. This is directly connected with one of the genes which specify your chronotype. Some people need longer sleep, some shorter, some prefer to stay up in the evening and for some it's better to go to sleep early. The key for good sleep is to sleep with complete cycles. One cycle is around 90 minutes and only when it's finished you can feel refreshed after. Sleep is very complicated matter and as we can see almost everyone does it wrong. I think there should be some campaigns that educate people how to sleep well.
1. Yes, I sleep about 8 hours per day, for me it is perfect dose. What is interesting if I sleep more than that I feel sleepy :)

2.As I mentioned previsouly, I have no problems due to lack of sleep. But sometimes after good lunch, I yawn and feel tired. Then, I have few tricks - strong coffee or Red Bull, but I also do pushups to increase heart rate.

3. My grandma says that sleep is a cure for everything. To be honest, I knew it is partly true, but - wow! - I didn't know that lack of sleep may be cause cancer.
Back to the topic, I totally agree. Lack of sleep leads to decreasing concetration, health immunity and level of our hapiness. Athletes and scientists confirm that there is no better way to recover from exercise and mental work than sleep. That is why it is so important to sleep long enough.

1. Yes, I always sleep at least 8 hours.

2. Fortunately not, as mentioned above I always sleep enough and therefore, there are no symptoms of this sort.

3. From my own experience, yes. I can see it on myself that if I sleep well and at least those "magical" 8 hours I don't struggle with learning, staying concentrated or working. It doesn't only affect how good you feel, as begin well-rested simply makes you feel better, but abilities to do literally everything.

1. Yes, I do. I always get about 7 hours of sleep a night. Moreover research shows that getting about eight hours of sleep per night is health and beneficial, because people will live longer, be more productive and happier.

2. No, I haven't had becuase I try to get enough sleep, but I am turly happy that you share this movie with us, because his speech was really informative and gave me food to thought. I will share this video with my friend who sleep less than 5 hours per night, I hope that this speech open his eye and he change his habit.

3. Yes, I am totally agree with his speech, because sleeping impact on our mental and physical health, but to be honest I wasn't aware of the consequences. In my opinion lack of sleep may affect problem with concentration, obesity, heart disases, depression etc. Unfortunately I am afraid that most of us have no idea that sleeping is so important.

I try to sleep at least 8 hours. however, recently it happens that I sleep less than 6. This is due to the fact that I try to combine extramural education with full-time studies. There are other responsibilities as well. As a result, I have less time for entertainment that I value. That is why I often give up time for sleep in favor of rest/fun

I think not because you have to maintain this state for a long time. I still get enough sleep at least twice a week.

Certainly it is. worse concentration, worse ability to absorb knowledge, lack of creativity or humor always occur along with long-term lack of sleep.
I do sleep 8 hours a day but not always in regular schedule. Very often I go to sleep in the middle of the night. This holiday I had one situation with bad symptom of sleepless night. After ten-hour ride I have only slept 5 hours and went to work on construction site. In the middle of work i have collapsed for few seconds from exhaustion. It was a little blackout and nothing really happend to me but it really shows how right amount of sleep can affect your health. I believe Matt Walker described perfectly what consequences there might be in future if you regularly do not have enough sleep.

I usually underslept the last year and it had bad consequences for my general mood and my ability to keep focused and concentrated. Also, I had problem with regularity - both the time when I went sleep and its duration but I decided to provide some regularity recently and it definitely affected well on me. I try to go to sleep earlier and wake earlier as well and I am pretty sure I will continue working on the improvement of my sleeping habits after I've watched the video. So, I definitely agree that the quality and quantity of sleep deeply affecting our general condition.
I didn't know that the deficiency of sleep may have such serious consequents as it was mentioned in the video. The research seems reliable, even that the guy doesn't say how big the examined sample was.
1. Yes, I always sleep at least 7 hours.

1. I don't sleep enough because of many distractions, such as Instagram :) But I know the benefits of sleeping, and I love sleeping and try to sleep for at least 7 hours.

2. Didn't notice. Probably because I don't have permanent sleep deprivation.

From observing my body, I can confidently say yes. I sleep about six or seven hours a day, but if I sleep more or less, I feel tired during the day. I wake up sleepless. It all depends on how much we know our own body and how much energy we supply it during the day.

Due to lack of sleep, resulting from a lack of sleep, usually on long flights, I felt very weak, fast heartbeat, slow thinking. A very unpleasant feeling, especially when you know you have no time or place to rest.

3. Do You believe that sleeping impacts us as much as Matt Walker described it?
Sleep is extremely important to us, as is eating or drinking water. I agree that it affects the quality of our functioning during the day. Bad healthy sleep also depends on external factors, such as oxygenation or the intensity of light in the room. However, it is also affected by stress or meals we consumed during the day.
1. No, not really. I’m trying to but usually I end up with 6 to 7 hours of sleep. Weekend is my savior.
2. Bad symptoms? No, but talking about good effects of sleep I use a rule that my parents taught me: if you are sick, take a longer sleep. And it usually helps when I feel I’m about to get sick.
3. Hey, this man holds a projector remote control, he can’t lie :) But seriously, why not? It has been stated numerous times before that sleep is important for correct functioning of our organism.

I think I can say yes. In the past I was very often sleeping too short but now I feel like I sleep enough. Usually it's not more than six hours but I feel good. It really depends on the amount of work and stress that I have during the week because sometimes I'm very tired. But anyway, yes - I think I sleep enough.

I think I've never had any of presented bad symptoms. Maybe I haven't noticed it or didn't connect it with lack of sleep.

I hope it's not because I don't feel like I need more sleep but to be honest I never had time to check whether 8 hours of sleep is better than 6 hours. Maybe it sounds funny but I really value my time and I don't like wasting it. I will have time for it later.

1. I think so, at least I try.
2. Once. I was sick because I was overworked (it wasn't due to the weather).
3. Everything what Matt Walker said is logical and joins together. In addition, it is often connected that when we are awake it will be worse concentration, and when we are tired we can be sick. We now that. But here, Matt Walker showed the relationship between sleep and the state of health of our body on the charts. He had conclusions and arguments to support them. So I certainly agree with that in part. But does sleep have such a big impact on gene mutations or a relationship with cancer formation? I don't know. I will definitely want to delve into the subject.

3. Yes of course. During sleep, the body regenerates and the brain cleanses. It is obvious that sleep has such a big impact on us.

1. I definetly do not get enough sleep.
2. For me sleep depravation ends up with tiredness, problem with concentration and reflexes and also I became easily irritated. But theese are the visible efects.
3. I do agree with Matt Walker about sleep being a superpower. For example even in a common cold a few hours of sleep can make wonders.
1. I'm definitely not sleeping enough. (I'm personally affected by insomnia for years from now)

2. Probably the problems with concentration and memory have their base partly in my insomnia.

3. I definitely do believe that leak of a sleep can impact your entire body. I don't even consider it as a matter of believing it or not. I would rather say it's a medical fact. Mentioned during the speech "deep sleep" is the most important time for our brain to recover and rest properly. Can be considered as interesting fact or not but knowledge about deep sleep was even used as a metod of torture, where victims were allowed to sleep no longer than 30 minutes. This amount of time does not give opportunity for our brain to move to REM phase.

2. For the last 3 month due to lack of enough sleep and some stressful situations , I'd found that I have problems in concentrating myself.
3. Sleeping impacts every aspect of our lives, but not only sleeping enough but also stable intervals between sleep attempts. Moreover sleep "sessions" must be comfortable for your brain and body.
1) As sleep lover I can say sure! Unfortunately usually I sleep for 5-6 hrs but in weekends I sleep about 8-10 hrs.
2) It so happened that I did not get enough sleep because of exams or trips and the feelings were not so pleasant. Loosing concentration, Feeling of heaviness and the worst thing is that I can’t fall asleep when the time comes for it.
3) It is obvious that SLEEP is a source of energy for our entire body. I totally agree with Matt Walker!
1. Not always, sometimes it's less than 8 hours.

2. Fortunately, no. Sometimes I have a headache or I feel that I am not active enough, but such serious symptoms that were described in the video, I did not notice.

3. Certainly. Sleep is closely related to our health and well-being. I once watched a documentary about sleep and how lack of sleep affects us. This movie described similar things that were in the video, but I still learned new things thanks to Matt Walker.

1. No, probably no, but why to waste time for sleeping :)
2. No. I have never noticed any major problems resulting from too short sleep. Maybe sometimes im little bit tired or sleepy at work or school.
3. Probably yes. Our body and mind needs some time to rest and regenerate, but it is worth noting that we sleep about 1/3 time of our lives, its huuuge amount of time.
I prefer to sleep about 6h and in most times its enough for me.
I recommend to read about polyphasic sleep. It uses alternative sleep schedules like 3 or 4 shorter naps a day instead of sleeping whole night. Definitely worth checking ;)
1. Yes, I do. For me sleep is kind of a sacred thing. It even happened to me few times to miss classes or be late for work just to get right amount of sleep.

2. Not really, I always try to sleep minimum 7 hours, which is enough for me to feel fine. Only bad symptoms that I have experienced were feeling a little bit down in the morning, but that passes quite quickly.

3. I believe sleep is one of the most important parts of our life cycle. Our whole body and mind regenerate during sleep, so that's why it is so essential.

1. Yes, I do. Since I’ve read some articles about importance of sleep, I really put a high value on having right amount of sleep everyday. I think that it is very important, having a good sleep let you be fresh, locked and loaded moreover lack of sleep can cause serious health problems.

2. Yes, when I was in the high school, sleep deprivation accompanied my daily life, I can still remember how much it’s affected myself. I was moody and angry, also my learning and memorizing abilities were much worse than now (when I get enough sleep everyday).

3. Yes, totally. Sleep impacts us a lot, I would say It’s one of the most important thing in our lives. Without enough amount of sleep we won’t be able to stay in shape, work effectively and feel good. Lack of sleep shatters our physical and mental health; sleep deprivation can even be the cause of depression.
My every day is different. One day I go to bed early and sleep more than 10 hours, and the other day I go to bed terribly late and sleep briefly. My biological clock is very unstable :(
If you add up all the hours of my sleep, it turns out that I sleep long enough.

I have been playing computer games for a long time. I used to spend much more time on games than I do now. My record without sleep is about 70 hours. At that time I had 4 naps for 15 minutes. With such a long time without sleep, all senses are incredibly sensitive, the head hurts and the human doesn't feel well.

Sleep is very important and there is no life without it. It has powerful power.
1. Yes, I think I sleep enough, it's about from 7 to 8 hours.

2. I had some of burdensome symptoms when I had to finish my project in my job and deadline was close. I slept around 4 hours. I feel dizzy and frustrated. It was a short period of time, but it was really hard time.

3. As I said before, I had only two days of bad symptoms. If I didn't sleep much longer things could go much worse even same as Matt Walker described it.

1. I don't think so. Sometimes it's 6-8 hours but I tend to oversleep a lot.

2.When I was younger i had insomnia episodes. I used to be easly irritated, but my abilities and skills were unaffected.

3.Yes, I do believe it. Deprivation of sleep is terrible experience and has serious consequences for our body and mind. Without the right amount of sleep we won't be able to function properly through the daily activites, but i personally think that the definition of "right amount" is diffrent for people. Surely, for most people 8 hrs is perfect, but some of us just neeeeeeds more and crave more and for some 5-6 hrs will do good. As long as our sleep patterns suits us and hasn't got any negative impact of our lives, we should sleep as long as we want to.

3. I always knew that lack of sleep can be dangerous, but I didn’t realize how much. What he mentions about cancer is terrifying. I agree with Matt about how good sleep (or not good) can influence our lives. Consequences of not sleeping enough should be getting more publicity.

Actually I don’t know if I am. I mean, I’m trying to do my best and to sleep 8 hours a day but I’m not always succeeding :) I’m studying a lot, I work even more and sometimes I feel like a squeezed lemon. Depressed squeezed lemon.
When I’m not sleeping good I sometimes have awful headaches, I cannot really concentrate on things, I’m not doing my job good enough so sometimes I know that it’s better to leave things to later and give yourself a time to rest.
Yes, I do think that lack of sleep impacts us this much, because I can feel it myself. I remember this one time I slept 3-4 hours a day for two weeks and after that I had really high temperature and was feeling so sick, even though I wasn’t cold or something. 1. I think so, but it wasn't 8 hours on regular basis for a long time. Although it's probably pretty close to it at the moment.

2. No, I think I never had any symptoms mentioned in the video. Even when there was a time I'd sleep 0.5-2 hours a day everything was fine. I simply did what Matt Walker said we can't do - made it work like a bank and debt. After few days of sleeping really small amounts of time I'd sleep for 10-12 hours and go back to my quite short sleeping times. Sometimes I'd sleep off more than 1 day in row but it was usually enough and laster for very long time. On the hand I have headaches when I sleep for too long and it's much shorter maximum sleeping time than in past.

3. Maybe. Even though I was fine and full energy, even if I slept let's say half hour for 3 days in row, it had to have some impact on my mind and body. I'm aware it was very unhealthy. Back then it could have no effect on me at all but unfortunately over time it can come back and hit me really hard in the future. I hope it won't though. Also I doubt I could pull off such lifestyle now, 3-4 years later.
1. Yes, I always try to sleep at least 7 hours a day. Every time i stay late at night i feel very tired next day.

2. I remember in high school that i was sleeping around 4-5 hours/day. Next day, on first lessons i couldn't focus on what teacher was saying. I had a situation when i fell asleep during lesson.

3. I believe sleep does impact on on our health, I heard about many consequences of lack of sleep, that's why i started sleeping around 7 hours per day
1. I'm trying to sleep enough, but sometimes it's not possible - work, studies and others duties. But it's much better than the previous year, so it's better but sometimes still not enough
2. If I don't sleep enough I can't fully focus on my duties and do it properly, can't learn something, escpecially before exams. Also I have bad mood and I get nervous more easily. But no health problems due to lack of sleeping

Well I try my best to sleep at least 7 hours a day. Sadly not everytime I manage to do it.

2. Have You ever had any of the bad symptoms described during the talk due to lack of sleep?
Yeah, I remember when I spent almost whole week sleeping for less than 5 hours a day. I was nervous all the time and couldn't concentrate for a longer period of time.

3. Do You believe that sleeping impacts us as much as Matt Walker described it?
Yeah, I think sleep is crucial for your overall performance. The issue is that we sometimes want a bit more time for ourselves and we usually get that time at expense of our sleep.
1. It seems to me that I am currently sleeping long enough for proper functioning.
2. Yes, definitely. Several times I had to work all night and then I had trouble concentrating.
3. Yes, sleep is very important in everyday functioning.

I don't have troubles with sleeping. I sleep 8 hours a day and feel myself quite fine.
Of course, I've heard that lack of sleep causes health problems. These things are directly related. That's why I try to sleep enough time every day. I've already seen this video and was surprised that lack of sleep can cause such terrible symptoms. I thought it would only be drowsiness and fatigue, but the consequences are much more dangerous.

1. I don't sleep enough to be relaxed and happy, but sleep enough according to this video.

2. Everyday and all-day headache is my routine, but it's not only connected with my sleep.

3. Sleep has an impact on our brain functions and brain control every process in our body. So yes, sleep has an enormous impact on everything.
1. I sleep around 5-6 hours daily. It is more than enough for me.
2. Recently I have discovered that if I sleep more than 7 hours, I discover some bad symptoms.
3. I have heard about it, but as for me, I am a lifelong JetLagged person , because I travel a lot, so it is far from my reality.

1. I sleep around 4-6 hours, but it happens that 8 hours, and I think I have 6 hours to sleep well.
2. There were moments when I did not sleep for two days and then I slept for half a day and went sluggish.
3. Well, maybe he is right in some moments, but there are people whose brain works well without a couple of days of sleep. But after watching the video, I still thought about changing my sleep mode a bit.
I try to sleep enough, but I don't always manage to do it because of my work and college.
Yes, when I sleep too short the other day I am less productive and more irritable.
I know the symptoms described in the movie. I believe that sleep has a huge impact on my mood and the things described in the movie.

Answering one the first question, it is hard for me due to different responsibilities. Unfortunately I have felt the effects of sleep deprivation many times like memory problems. My brain didn't work in optimally way. I'm sure that Matt's Walker is right. I know that sleeping is one of the most important part of life. I were'nt aware of some significant impact which he mentioned. The way which a sleeping affects our health is inestimable. I heard even that bad habits related to sleeping, silently killing us.

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes.
